I lived in HK for 20 years and recently back to the UK. HK people are the nicest and most hard working people I know. I’m glad they are welcomed to the UK. They can make a true contribution to UK society. In many ways, their values are the same as typical British born people.

After all Hong Kong was under British rule since 1842 until 1997. Hong Kong had good memories staying close to western ideas and economic growth, but 1997 was the worst year for Hong Kong to be under Communist China’s power and 25 years later it’s still bad for Hong Kong. I hope our Hong Kong people will have their independence someday as they will never give up!

Better to try than never try at all. Life is about risk taking. People who aren't willing to try will never know if the grass is greener on the other side. Afterall many HKers already seen their friends and families who are successful overseas. Not everyone will make it but the more adaptable ones could.

@@zuninah7545 well China isn't really communistic. They are more like they are more like crony corporatist. Only the few elites are in charge and control everything including the government. Communism strives to set up a society where there are no states and where there is no money. Additionally, it wants the means of production (like factories, tools and farms) to be in the hands of the people (which is the definition of socialism).

@@canto_v12 it's obviously political. Since 2019, many people who are on the "yellow" end of the HK political spectrum have been arbitrarily detained and arrested. Even identifying as a "Hongkonger", or saying 香港人, 加油 can get you in huge trouble in post-NSL Hong Kong. Obviously this creates a stifling atmosphere that many would want to leave, and many have already left because of this.

What I remember of the riots of 2019 is the killing of the old man, the worker being set on fire and the fire bombing of the police and fire fighters. Well done HK'ers who have PhDs and university education and professional jobs are now leaving HK taking all your hard earned money to become Uber drivers and washing dishes in Chinese restaurants in UK, no wonder they were welcoming you with open arms. If you are unhappy with those conditions or think that's unfair why don't you stage a mass protest on the streets of London and see how far that takes you? Too afraid to? It's a strange double standard HK'ers have, you would rather become second class citizens in a foreign country than put up with a new law that allows the government in your own country to extradite criminals.
If you study history you will know you are supporting the government who 150 years ago forced the importation of opium into your own country to cause decay of your people and it's society proudly built over thousands of years. When the government of your country tried to protect its people and stop this from happening they were ganged up on by multiple western countries who attacked her, raided her treasures and forced her to give up territories so the opium trade can continue. You will know for much of the 150 years of colonial occupation of HK the local Chinese were second class citizens within their own country, abused and treated like dogs in earlier years. The older generation of HK'ers will tell you of police abuse of local Chinese, the most senior positions in police, government and foreign companies alike were all white people. The locals never had equal opportunities or freedom to vote even till the very end. Oh you never learned these things in your school curriculum in HK? Funny how these important historical facts were never taught in a democratic free society isn't it? The sad fact is people listens to whatever they are told through the media. And funny how Britian started to allow local Chinese to take over senior government positions just in the last few years prior to the planned handover. You have been played! It's ironical that when you are fighting for freedom and democracy, the time in history when HK was most free and the people had the most national dignity was prior to British colonisation and immediately after. Yes I know some freedoms have been taken away from you in the last few years but was it worst than under colonial rule? It's quite sad how you accepted abuse and subjugation by foreigners for years and years and never dared to say a word but when the Chinese government does anything you become indignant and righteous.
But I am sure this is all in the past now and the British people now accept the Chinese as equals. And yes HK'ers you are seen as Chinese to westerners. I'm sure they will welcome you and your money into their society and allow you 'equal' opportunity to do the jobs white people don't want to do, at least until your money lasts. But I wouldn't hang arround the streets late at night if the jobs starts to dry up and the locals become angry. But I know you are very adaptable you can dye your hair brown and use cosmetic surgery to look more like a westerner. But for now things are still calm and you can join them to laugh at, look down on and help foreigners contain China. Good luck on your future!

The Qing Dynasty were the ones who signed the deal with the British by offering a small fishing village with about a 1000 people in population. The Qing considered it worthless to them because of the rocky mountainous Terrain and low amount of resources.
Also keep in mind the Qing also made China backwards and out of touch with the rest of the world which made China weak to foreign attacks. Which is why the Chinese people over threw them with foreign help. Even the current Chinese government is in power because of foreign help.
If you want the Hong Kongers to understand their roots. Well they understand Beijing Government is still a foreign power to them. Hong Kong has higher ranking for freedom than UK, and you have no idea what you are talking about freedom. As for democracy, democractic system does not guarantee for good gouverment or good leader. Democracy are nothing but regret every four years, and the mistake repreat over and over again.
I don't feel sorry for stupid people, and you can be all you want nor do i care. One has to wonder, whenever the word "freedom" is mentioned, is it politics related, or is it cultural norms such as collectivism (and other things, that are typical to many Asian countries)

    • @canto_v12
      @canto_v12 2 роки тому +1

IMO it's always a bit of both. That's why I always think twice when listening to these people talk about why they emigrated after the recent events in Hong Kong. Some are self-conscious and may be less willing to divulge the economic struggles, so "politics" is a convenient excuse. I did notice that some interviewees talk about "fear" and "uncertainty" without substantiating what exactly they feel they might get in trouble for.
The other thing with Hong Kong is a severe lack of personal space and living space for the middle class, in a city whose GDP is US$60k per head. Hong Kong is, in some aspects, too free for its own good and that has been a double-edged sword. Attaining a decent living space is a hyper-competitive rat race and HK's small, closed-border territory prevents people from simply "moving out of town."

There is quite a large community of hongkongers in my country. The main reason they moved to my country under my second home programme is the living space, not because my government is better than hong kong. In fact my country's governance is one of the worse in the world. Corruption and racial discrimination are rampant among others. You name it my country has it. But if you are not bothered by the governance/politics, my country is a beautiful place to live. My boy and girl are both working in Hong Kong and loving it.

Please Stop put the Hongkonger or hongkongese in Chinese group.
We must know Hong Kong and China are different ethnic groups with different cultures since the Qing dynasty is Ended over than 200 years.
We must to be fair to the Hongkonger.
Before the hongkong people did not have the choices to choose their identity , they are being called Chinese in outside the Asian countries, Because of the words Hongkonger and Hongkongese just appeared in few years ago. But in almost of Asian countries, almost of Asian people never put Hongkonger/hongkongese to the Chinese group. Never call them Chinese.
The concept is very simple, just like the relationship of Indian, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Please don’t call the Hongkonger and hongkonese as Chinese. They already got so much hurt by China and Chinese like Russia and Ukraine.
And the Hong Kong Cantonese are different than Malaysia, Guangdong and Singapore. The words, grammar and tones are so different. If there’s has a chance, it can be called hongkongese. What’s the different? You can just see their name on ID card. They can use their owned spelling system to talk to each other, and it’s only the Hongkonger can understand.
For example, Diu Nei Lo Mo is mean fxxk you mother fxxker.
