Nissan 350Z Convertible Top Won’t Move, Brake Lights Don’t Work or Lock up, Cruise Won’t Turn Off

This all started when I got my 2005 Nissan 350Z. After a little while the top started getting less and less reliable when I would want to put it up or down. Eventually it just stopped working completely. Then I almost got rear ended out driving one day. That was when I realized something was really wrong. I found out about the Brake Light Switch and replace it. My brake lights and convertible top started working perfectly. But the next time I drove the car there was a new issue. The brakes would not release, they felt like they were stuck engaged and when I got back the brakes were REALLY HOT. Thankfully I didn’t even make it out of my addition before I realized there was an issue. After a lot of research I found that that the brake switch I just replaced was causing my issue. It was inserted in to far and it was causing the vacuum booster to not be able to release it’s pressure. Once I figured it out it was easy to fix but I’m hoping this video makes it easier for others to fix their car without having this happen to them.

Hey man, i got a 2003 350z, and everytime i get in the car at night and turn my headlights on, the brake lights on the back stay on all the time, but just when my headlights are on. I replaced the brake switch and also check if the brake rubber stopper was there and it was there. But still happens, i have no idea what can be wrong you have any idea?? Im lost.
What are they called, the proper name, brake light switch, or convertible fuse?

if you dont care about cruise control do you need to have the brown switch clipped in?
You helped solve my locked-up rear brakes for me!!! After realizing my brake lights were not going off I bought and installed the [stop] brake light switch, only then did I discover that the rubber stopper/grommet had hardened and broken off the brake pedal. I decided to use metal screws instead of the rubber stoppers. While installing the metal screws I pushed the brake pedal and inadvertently repositioned the pedal during the process of installing the screws and switch. No one could tell me what was wrong. Two days later, after finding your video and listening to my wife's suggestion of undoing what I did to install the metal stoppers in the first place I properly reinstalled the switch and the problem was SOLVED!

Jesse Locke were your front brakes locking up to or just your rear ?
My front brakes and rear lock up as if i was pressing the brakes the whole time im driving ,only started happening after a shop supposedly replace the brake switch
I bet they installed the switch too deep. It’s really easy to do. Watch what I do here and check yours and I bet it is installed all the way down. Just twist it and hold your pedal up while you reinstall it and it will fix it. And then go tell them they almost killed you and owe you new brake pads.

So basically both switches, are the same. They both of the brake switch relay pretty much do the same thing, regarding engage and disengaging the current

Is was on there where I got it. Don't have this Z any more. Now I drive the blue one in my icon. But Z1 has a 350Z Rear Wing by Stillen that looks similar.
same damn thing happened to my 04 350Z convertible. New top 2 years old, garage kept. I put the top down went for a ride came home no movement at all. Can hear it engage but nothing. Any suggestions will help!

WE just purchased a 2004 350z and took to the Nissan dealer to check out top. He said the motors are fine but when we push the button to open nothing happens and we don't hear anything. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Yes, Margie, we did fix our top. The problem was the elastic straps (see link, he helped us a lot!), and we also replaced the 5th Bow motor, which is a very common problem with these tops. If you're not hearing your motor initiate when you push the button, be sure you have your foot on the brake while you're pushing the button and check the switches discussed in this video. So before you fixed it did your seat move and windows go down at all? My windows and seat go down and my rear latch releases and that’s it. No top moving at all. About to get rid of the car cause I don’t want to spend more then the car is worth to fix.
There’s a forum showing you how to repair the 5th bow motor. That’s likely the cause of your top not moving

Just looking at my dad's 350z .. his needs new spider bands which i ordered from you. BUT.. he also has another issue. The hard cover portion stops a bunch of times on the way to going back.. so he has to keep pressing the open button over and over until it finally opens.. and then the soft top will start to come back (and then not go in all the way because of bad spider bands).. Any idea what would cause the hard cover portion to require pressing the open button repeatedly to get it to fully open? Could the switch be causing that as well?
It could definitely be the switch that sounds exactly like what mine was doing. It would move then stop and move then stop and I would push the switch. On mine it ended up being the petal switch I detailed here. If it isn't active then the top will stop. Mike kept getting worse until I replaced the brake switch then it was perfect. Just make sure you watch on how to install it and don't put it in all the way. It's an easy job but also easy to mess up.
Did you end up figuring out your dad's convertible top issue? Mine died the same thing where it stops and I have to keep pressing the button to open the top.
Hey I just bought a 350Z and my top isn’t working at all. Nothing else is wrong. Do you think it’s the white switch?
It is possible. The easy way to test it is to take it out and use a continuity tester on it. Put the probes on the separate plates in the back of then then see if the the continuity is broken when you press the button. I’m not sure if it defaults to an open or closed circuit, but pressing the button should change it either way.
My wife just brought a 2004 350z and the soft top will not move or even attempt to open (looks just like yours). The brake lights work, and the cruise control is working fine. Any idea of what could be going on with it?
I assume the top is up. When you unlatch it, press the brake and then press open the back lid doesn’t move at all?
@@spyderbandsandmore7458 We found out that someone disconnect the switch and it was because it will not latch back once it let down. Now we have to replace the soft top. Can you tell me how many motor the roof has and where can I found the diagram for them?
Dang! My manual z is not getting power to the top, so I bought the switch, but only one switch was available for both auto and manual. The switch arrives in a week or so - sure hope that solves the problem - thanks!
Let me know. Mine was an automatic so I'd like to see if you experience is different.
@@spyderbandsandmore7458 Will do. It arrives on 9/11 - not the most promising of dates, but I'm really hoping it solves the problem. We had the 5th Bow motor replaced, but after the install, the top wasn't getting any power at all. So, without doing any metering around, I'm thinking it's either the brake-pedal switch, the center console switch or a relay - if nothing else, at least we'll know we have a fresh brake-switch... Just make sure you watch the part about installation depth because that is what I screwed up the first time.

Okay so I watched this video, but I’m not sure if this is the solution for my problem. I have the exact same car, Nissan 350z roadster, automatic. The rubber pedal stopper broke for mine, and I got a new one, but now whenever I have something there and try to drive my brakes are locking up a little bit, not allowing me to get to speed, and it starts to get hot and smoke after a while. Do I need to just adjust those two sensors so the pedal comes out all the way (assuming mines not out all the way). I spent $15 on that stupid piece and broke it whenever I had to take it out because my brakes were smoking (all 4 tires btw). My top comes down like normal, but my lights stay on 24/7 without the rubber stopper, so I just put a penny to hold the button when I’m not driving, but it’s annoying, and this is by far the closest I think I’ve gotten to a solution
I am almost completely sure this will solve your problem. It sounds like it just needs adjusted. You switches sound like they are fine if your lights are on. You will want the rubber stoppers, just take the switches out and adjust them like I do in the video and that is going to solve both of your issues. Your brake lights will work and your brakes will stop locking up.
Would you know where to get a rubber that fits? The one I ordered has a little bit of play, pretty sure it’s not supposed to anyways
Unfortunately (or fortunately) that isn’t a part I have had to replace.
Thanks for posting but I have a question.. Only my convertible top doesn't work. No brake issues or cruise control issues. I checked the motors and they are functional. Any chance its still the white switch?
Have you double checked to make sure your brake lights are coming on? You can also take out the switch and test it with a multimeter. I don’t remember which way was open and which was closed when testing continuity. But it was really easy to see the difference on the bench. That would tell you for sure.
@@spyderbandsandmore7458 Thanks for the response. There are no issues with the brakes in any shape or form though. Grrr. I was thinking it could be the switch. The convertible top died over time, meaning it was slower when problems started, then worked intermittently. Now doesn't work. I've narrowed it down to either a switch or computer problem

Where is it clicking? Does it move at all. The back lift or the cover open?

So for the black one (for the top) do you push a quarter of the way before twisting right ?
You have to push it in far enough that it doesn't engage the button, but will engage it when the pedal is pressed. It you put it in too far the brakes won't ever release, but it you don't go far enough the brake lights won't work properly. It was more than a quarter of the way on mine. Insert it until the button is pressed, but it isn't pushing back the pedal. Then turn.

@@Ninja97587 Well, kinda, but that is why I made the video. I did it wrong the first time and my brakes locked up on me when they wouldn't release and got VERY VERY hot.

Maybe. That light only turns on when you unlatch it right? Do your brake lights work? Does it do anything at all? Move a bit and stop? It could also be your lid motor has gone out.

My brake lights work fine and the latch is latched correctly but the open light is still on and my top won't move at all. I'll look up the part tomorrow at work and swap it out since I work in auto parts lol
