- In today's ink profile video, we look at a very traditional purple by Waterman: Tender Purple. Thank you K.S. for the sample!
I show you how the ink looks on several paper types and notebooks as well as show some comparable and not so comparable inks. I forgot to include the visual journal samples so I plan to take some photos later a & share in the community tab.
At the end of the video I show you the 9 purple/purpleish inks I have in bottle form and talk about how much I like Waterman Tender Purple and Taccia Murasaki.
Thank you for watching!

Thanks. I like the Waterman inks, especially in my vintage pens. The panels are always helpful in comparing the different inks, I appreciate you doing them.
Hi Janis - I love comparing the ink shades! :) Glad you enjoy seeing the panels!
Just got my Waterman purple and glad to hear I made a good choice. I must admit I love the shape of Waterman bottles.
Waterman Tender Purple is in my top five purple inks. It's one of the few inks I like enough to keep an unopened bottle on hand at all times. The moment I open one bottle, I order the next.
Waterman Harmonious Green is also a favorite.
Waterman inks have a reputation for being saturated, and extremely well-behaves. Waterman inks are safe for vintage pens, and safe for mixing with other brands of ink.
I really hate shading. I buy an ink because I love the color, so I want that color to stay what I paid for. When I has young, every fountain pen person I knew hated "shading". It wasn't even called shading, it was just said to be a cheap, poorly mixed and formulated ink that wouldn't hold its color. Then marketers got ahold of these inks, came up with the word "shading", called it a feature, not a bug, and the rest is history.
I alsi hate shading because I write a lot of letters to non-fountain pen paper, and they have no clue that shading is supposed to be a good thing. They just see a sloppy letter written by someone who needs to buy a new pen, and who doesn't care how his letters look.
Tender Purple is an ink you can make shade by using a wet pen, of keep from shading by using a medium dry pen, while still retaining the rick purple color. I love this about it.
But I like all the waterman inks. I;m not a fan of blue ink, so I don't have the Waterman blues, but I do have all the others, and use them regularly.
I'm really enjoying Waterman Tender Purple still and it is ever so nice to know it's safe for the pens.
I love shading generally but there are times when I just want the color to be solid. And I do hate shading where it's not even the same color - I guess that's technically called something else like sheen but I call it "zebra" ... if it's a red ink I sure don't want green anything on it for example so I can partly relate. I do like shading like what Diamine Aqua Lagoon produces.
Leave it to the marketers and manufacturers to sell something as a good thing that has usually been known as a flaw. Makes me think of blue jeans with holes and weird fraying and fading ... they won't be getting my money. :)
My number one purple.
Waterman's Serenity blue is my top blue. Very reliable, clean and safe inks for all pens, including vintage.
Hi Neil - I can see why - it's a super well behaved and beautiful ink!!!! I'll try Serenity Blue soon!!!
Waterman also works well on bad papers, especially with a fine nib.
Chris, you make me happy.
Hi Catherine! :) This is good!
Waterman makes legit inks. I really like that this retains its integrity without being super warm toned.
It’s the prettiest purple of your comparison swatches, I think. I picked up a bottle of Amazing Amethyst for my grey TWSBI Eco with a medium nib, which sadly behaves more like a fine nib, and it’s too light. I don’t love it as much as I wanted to, but it really just needs the right pairing. Loving your vids! I’m with you, I think I should have every purple I want. 😂
I just ordered the Tender Purple as my very first ink, thanks for your informative video!
Hi @Chuloon you are very welcome!
Chris, I have a bottle of Waterman Tender Purple from the late 70's or early 80's. It is still nice and still good ink! I wonder if they changed the formula for it in all that elapsed time?
Wow Dean I like hearing whenever ink is still good after a long time! I'm never quite sure of the shelf life! For sure that Waterman company must know what they are doing with all those years of experience making pens and ink!
Hi Chris. This was one of my first inks and remains a favorite. I have had a stub Pilot Plumix inked with W. Tender Purple since I first bought it. The Waterman's turquoise and serenity blue are up there too. I love your comparison panels. I always look to see which of the inks I have. It helps keep me from buying unnecessarily. Thanks.
Hi Robbin -- you are welcome! I too love to compare colors and make sure I don't duplicate too much -- but in the case of purple I just went nuts that first year!!!!!!! :)
@@ChrisSaenz13 I am just closing on 1 year and the spending has not stopped. I think I hear my own cry for help.
nice review! I don't own a purple ink but I may give this one a try :)
I bought a bottle and it arrived today. I put it in my lamy 2000 with a BB nib and the ink is amazing! It has great shading that shows off the medium/darker purple color.
Hi @colea310 - it's beautiful isn't it!!!!
I’ve been a fan of Waterman (ink and pens) for a while and they never disappoint. This is a lovely one that I’m still working on the sample of but has joined the wish list - although I too have a lot of purples! Thanks, Chris.
Hi Sue -- I have so many purples but I can't get this one out of my mind!!!!!
I wanted to use this ink in the Lamy Safari dark lilac, alas! It's nowhere to be found 😑 (the ✒️)
Hi Deb -- I know -- it's such a bummer because there's really no ink that is quite like it but there are a few that come close. I really like Diamine Pansy ink! From the Flowers set. It's not an exact match but close.
I have three purples that I like: Monteverde Charoite, Diamine Majestic Purple, and Noodler's North African Violet.
The Noodler's is gorgeous but has a smell that would raise the dead and then put 'em back under. ☠️
Hi Chris -- LOL -- yikes on the smelly violet ink ... is it supposed to have a scent? I'm not familiar with that one ... yet.
@@ChrisSaenz13
No, I think that like some Noodler's inks the stench is inadvertent. Either Nathan Tardiff can't smell anymore or he doesn't care about it. But that won't stop me from using his inks.
Hi Chris! I love your work, specially the ink (best reviewer on UA-cam!) and pen reviews! I'd like to ask you to do a Wing Sung 3008 review! What do you think about it? Thank you!
Hi Gustavo - thank you. I do love Wing Sung 3008 fountain pens in spite of a few quirks they have! That sounds like a good idea. I will begin that soon!
@@ChrisSaenz13 Thank you Chris! You are awesome!
Hiya, Chris! I'm grateful for this specific ink review; after your recent update on your "inky situation", it occurred to me that I have lots of ink, but in very specific categories of what i really like (same with lipstick: I kept buying new ones until I finally realized I was only buying the same 3 colors in different brands, always!)
If I wanted to create a rainbow, which suddenly I want to do, I don''t have the inks! So as you go along, I'll pick up some recommendations outside of my preferred teals, blue-blacks, turquoises, and sepia wheelhouse so that rainbow in my future is manifested! Have a wonderful day!
Hi Sister Sun - I totally relate - I went way wild on purple and blue and left out some color groups completely! :)
Thanks for the review. I'll have to make a note of this one since it looks so good coming out of a fine nib!
Hi gadgetstop - it has great flow and plenty of saturation! :) I don't even want to clean it out of my pens. (my review pens!) :)
Thanks Chris , this is one of my all time favourite inks . I refill purple varsity's with this ink (which are called V-Pen in europe) , it's a great ink for vintage pens and is really safe and well behaved.
Hi Matthew - I just watched the video on how to do that - so when my purple varsity runs low I will look forward to refilling it! I have 2 vintage pens. I'm very happy the Waterman inks are safe and well behaved - the price is not bad either. :)
Chris Saenz yes the prices are very good 🙂
Very beautiful ink! I guess I see Waterman ink's and pen's, as very vintage and not up front to see so often. Great video, Chris!
Thanks Sharon - it's a beautiful purple right! :)
The chromatography on this is amazing! The blue to pink in that sample in the middle of your panel layout is awesome! And the price of this wonderful ink is like the icing on the cake!
I thought this ink was just amazing! How I could be amazed by another purple ink - I'm not sure but the shade is just the most true to purple I've ever seen!!!! :)
Stay away from the Waterman Graduate. Cheap feeling and very scratchy nib
Thanks Gary . . . good to know.
@@ChrisSaenz13 haha sorry that message was just to anyone reading. Not directly to you.
Do you still like the waterman purple inks? I find it too watery so I get a lot of bleeding. And I don't like that theres very little shading.
Oh, yes. Waterman Tender Purple is gorgeous!
Hi Ann -- it is right!!!!!! :)
Lovely color!
excellent review, thank you
This is the colour of my own sample from years ago. Mountain of Ink's review from about 2018(?) is this colour as well. However, I bought a bottle in the last month and it's more a red/violet colour, like a Cross Violet. Does anyone know when Waterman switched the formulation?
Oh that's interesting .... I'm worried ... because this is one of my favorite purples and I just kind of assumed they were still making it the same.
@@ChrisSaenz13I've contacted Waterman's. If they get back I'll try to remember to let you know!
