Purple Ink Sample Ramble & Selection

- In this (long) video I ramble a lot while I look at all of the Col-O-ring swatches from 43 purple ink samples I recently added to the Ink Sample Inventory list. My purpose was to choose 25 for my shell box on my desk (to go in my purple box) and also to choose 2 for inking up in April 2020 which is just a few days away as I upload this video! [NOTE: this probably should have been a livestream ... but I wasn't quite able to work without interruption today so I just taped the ramble!]
At the end of the video I show how to fold and prep a handkerchief to be used as an emergency/washable face mask using traveler's notebook elastic. You can even insert some extra protective material or a washcloth into it if you need to. I'm also sewing some masks but not everyone has a machine and I think this trick deserves to be shown as much as possible. It's not my idea nor is it a replacement for a "real" medical mask but at this point we may encounter situations where something is better than nothing so I wanted to share. The next ink categories I sort thru are not as large as purple so it will much more manageable - I'll be back with more on those categories soon. There are still some inks I want to review eventually and this inventory project has given me some good data:

Hello from the UK. Thank you for this video which I really enjoyed. I have only recently started looking at purple inks having been a blue ink sort of a person for a long time. Purple gives such depth of colour and variety. I really enjoy your organisation. Keep well Chris.

I take pics w my phone, I noticed that the purple flowers often don’t come off in pics like they are in person. Colors can be difficult to capture accurately.

You have a bigger selection of purple inks that Goulet does! This was impressive. While purple is one of my favorite colors overall, I think blue would have to be my favorite to write with - more conservative, although being self--employed I have zero reason to be conservative! I just found my favorite purple ink - Monteverde's Wisdom Purple, although for some reason I do love those really, really dark ones that almost look black. I loved sorting ink with you and can't wait for the blue ink video!
The blue ink video will be challening with 82... Once the inventory is done. I think samples but I look forward to facing it head on!!!! I may do Orange next!

I have the same problem you mentioned with trying to decide which color family some inks belong to. It can be so confusing! I bought Alexander Hamilton a while ago but never used it so thanks for reminding me!
Hi Susan! Glad I'm not the only one having trouble sorting purple and burgundy inks ... even pinks can be deceptive and especially blurples! LOL

Hi Pam - sometimes I think how cool it would be to have ink from only one maker - and I wonder which one I'd choose if I could only pick one ink brand. Birmingham inks have a lot going for them! :)

By the way I order one of those solder bulbs you shown on the video. Funny thing I went to the radio shack website and it was about four dollars to ship. So being a Amazon prime member checked there. It was 5. 99 so order it.

I’m quite fond of purple inks. This is a feast for the eyes, Chris. For a while, I was fearing that you’d somehow shockingly neglect to mention Montblanc Lavender Purple. I am besotted with that one. As I am with its nearly Siamese twin, Kaweco Summer Purple. Gorgeous true purples, and so safe and well-behaved, to boot. I fancy a handful of all the other ones you showed here. Though I have to agree about the blatantly burgundy-ish ones not really belonging in this family of purples. And oh, you might already know, but Aurora recently released a slew of lovely new inks for the first time. They always had only the standard but superb blue, black and blue-black. I love all three of them a lot. But now they launched seven new inks. Take a look at Aurora Purple sometime. A lighter shade of purple. But a very attractive, alluring one, nonetheless.

Aurora inks (except the black), seem to be so overlooked. Your top review of the unique Aurora Blue ought to make more fans of blues belatedly consider buying that ink. The blue-black is dear to my heart, too. Anyway, the new Aurora inks come in pretty 55ml bottles - red, green, orange, purple, turquoise, sepia, and gray. Available at gouletpens for an admittedly steep $30 apiece. You’ll naturally try out a sample first. The gray might be another one you’ll want to try out to see if it clicks. Chris, in these trying, anxious times, your efforts and enthusiasm in these videos continue to inspire and cheer. Thanks for that!

Hi Chris, i really enjoy your videos and have a love for purple inks too. As i'm just starting out and also don't want to spend (nor have) the money on a ton of inks i was hoping you might be able to give an answer/overview as to what purple inks are water resistant at least, maybe even waterproof? Right now i only have Diamine Monboddo's hat. It is exactly the kind of purple i love but it completely disappears when water comes in contact with it. So, i would love to know if there is something in a similar tone but more resistant.

Neat box for ink samples! Where did you get those? I use hand gun cases to hold watercolor pallets of seed beads when I’m in the middle of bead projects. The stuff made for military use are so useful! And I’m curious about iron gall ink. What kind of pen should you select for those inks?

I am still learning about permanent and Iron Gall inks - since I use a lot of clear demonstrators I've been a little bit slow to explore inks that I feared might stain - my worries might not be founded.
It's not easy is it choosing which inks to use or purchase 😂😂. I've broken my no spend year 😖 and ordered one of the Diamine advent calendar inks in the lovely new shaped bottle, plus an omniflex nib. I thought well I'm stuck here on lockdown, so what the heck

I don't understand the point of brushing on a large area of ink on the card. It never looks like the color when coming out of a pen, so it is deceptive. ???
Hi Ichiro - for me it's about how it might look in my visual journal + art journal/TR journals/bullet journal - plus finding out what water resistance an ink might have (lower part of the 3x3 tile). I know it's probably not helpful for many. Still, I can't resist because I love color!
Do purples shade? i would love to have a light to middle purple that shades.
One of my favorite shading purples is Monteverde Purple Reign and it shades beautifully!

I like how you have your inks on a swatch. What do you use?
I think I saw a video where you talked about that but it was a long while ago.
I use Col-O-Ring cards for the ring swatdch and 3x3 watercolor paper I cut to 3x3" from 9x12" water color pads by Canson - sold at Walmart - Cold Press, 140 pound, 300 gram. I use a paint brush and at the bottom of the 3x3 card, I dap ink onto it and then using a clean brush and water I introduce water to see how the ink reacts. That gives me a glimpse sometimes of the chromatography and shows how much the ink moves when water gets on it!
