Gus Fermin Brens just curios as to why you guys don't like hearing it with music? you wouldn't object if you were listening to it, sitting by a fire with crackling logs.
@@nicholascowan1731 Usually because the audio levels are off, or the music is intending to add emotion to something that does not need more emotion. With that said, when I listen to Watts I often open up another browser tab and put on some binaural audio (meditation type tones). I suggest trying that, it's peaceful.
Alan would say you already have... The actions you take to "accomplish" such peace are the very actions that prevent you from realizing, as he would say, the real you.
I gave this some serious thought one morning as I sat looking out at the farm and a crane flew by giving me patience. Than as I truly saw we always get what we want a cardinal flew in beside me giving me a cardinal message.
the paradox of duality. like up needs down, before needs after etc, to be seperate you need something to be seperate from, or at least the illusion or perception of being individual.
all titles from alan videos already give me chills XD and when i listen..oh, thats just light from everywhere, this describes the fascination of live, called maya, the defenition i was looking for is the indefinable tao :D
I love that the group of people that usually listen to Alan Watts, or any other person of this nature, tend to be more honest or gentle. Usually is the key word here ^_^
I and you are everyone and everything that exists, only I and you don't remember it. so what you do in this life doesn't matter, but it does matter in the sense that you are still going on as everyone else. so you can make hell or heaven.
it still took courage to be the person he was, his ability to see what is real and to put it all together. he evolved what the ancients wrote and put it into terms that we could understand across the ocean of language, in a similar way einstein took newtons physics ideas and evolved them into general relativity. i guess i should iterate what i was referring to in a more specific way, but whatever way you want to look at it, stop looking at the glass as half empty
Most of Alan Watt's speeches are recorded with an audience present, so there's always someone coughing or giggling. In one of the recordings he interrupts his speech to tell someone to shut up.
Why are people worried that there's no music added? The concept behind this mans words are already there. Adding music or having no music will not add or subtract any value on any level for any reason.
Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy was a Ceylonese Tamil philosopher and metaphysician, as well as a pioneering historian and philosopher of Indian art, particularly art history and symbolism, and an early interpreter of Indian culture to the West. In his travels, he came across a sage, who he described as living a: "Perpetually Uncalculated Life In the Present."
+Alex Reik Thanks for sharing. I will look into Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy. Have you heard of Sri Ramana Maharshi? He has one main teaching, find the source of the "I"...but its not merely repeating "who am I?" again and again, there's more to it ;)
Matt is right, but in case a few more words will help: your sense of being you, a separate entity, can only be felt by contrast with other beings or objects that you consider to be "not you" or "other". So just like an object can't have a top but no bottom, you can't have a separate self without something "other" for it to be separate from. Watts calls it polar thinking, to be able to see the connectedness of seemingly opposite aspects of the world (short can only exist relative to tall, etc.)
The best I can do is act like a ship in a storm and control to a certain extent the aspects of movement. Or better example is like skydiving. When I'm falling I have the choice of cupping my hands and spinning in circles, dive down like an arrow, do somersaults, enjoying my experience of falling, BUT ultimately I am still in an uncontrollable fall.
Another great one from Alan Watts though the first part seems to be conflicting with his "What would like to do if money is no object?", in my perspective.
I know this is a very late response ( what’s time anyways?) but exactly. This is exactly it. There is no seperate “ other”, or thing, that’s not just truly you.
i've heard a lot of these alan watts clips on youtube over the years, i'm pretty sure that's a noise from the master recording tape these clips where taken from.
if you walk in the emptiness, how can you feel walking? You need the existence of a way to feel you're walking. You cannot feel walking without the environment. So the walking, the way, and you, are all the same, and inseparable. If you walk without "here" and "there", there's no moving. If you exist without "no you's", there's not the feeling of "I", there's only a point and the empty. But as you and others are inseparable, actually there's neither you nor others. Obvious and paradoxical.
in reply to Ariues' incomplete disillusionment... he says "let's not beat around the bush" an expression meaning let's be cleair and straight to the ponit
To exist without a purpose is, in itself, suffering. I believe we all want to be free in its truest and fullest sense. I propose here that we are most free when we are free to fulfil the purpose we were intended for. A blender being used to prop open a window or door, in this sense, is not free because it was intended for mixing. The question is what purpose are people intended for?
It is true when someone identifies with non-permanent things like their profession or possessions and believe that "I am THIS..." (doctor, writer, football player, etc.) sets them up for an identity crisis the day they can no be THAT. I am proposing that there is an identity that cannot be lost or taken away. That identity is "a child of God through Christ Jesus" an Ultimate and Eternal identity that cannot be lost.
lol @ the end I love how magical and free my life has become after Alan Watts and other find Teachers entered my life. They wouldn't let me suck on the finger, they kept directing me to where it was pointing.
TO laotzu4272; Thank you for your comments! Well you are correct if coming from the idea that identity =role, station or occupation in life. But I am referring to one's core identity from which our thoughts, words, actions and thoughts proceed. It supersedes all such labels or states. My understanding of identity is derived from the biblical understanding which uses a lot of imagery (light/darkness, sheep/goats, wheat/tares, saved/lost, etc.) in order to define 2 core identities a person can be, best summed up in John 1:12 "But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God." So if you have rec'd Jesus then you are a child of God, and THAT is your core identity which cannot be stripped from you and from this identity all else flows. It’s the only identity that really matters and carries eternal significance. :)
you can't explain it, don't get it, and you got it. look for it and its gone....Just remember you have nothing to remember..take a long laugh and look around hahahah
I don't know why, but every single one of Watt's lectures don't seem to get really through to me. It's like he is talking some kind of a Jibberish philisophy mixed with Jibberish jokes :-) On the other hand, when i listen to Eckhart Tolle, every single word sounds to me as clear as a bell and makes totally sense....
Eckhart Tolle was gibberish to me until it was time for me to get it. So was Ram Dass, Osho, ect...And then...boom... I understood it. Alan is not for you yet or ever. The mind always resists the unfamiliar. No biggie.

See, that last one. Always had a bloody issue with.
Thanks been 13 years this was released on my first listen 🎧 today after 13 years of 2024

"you, as a separate effort maker is a myth, a fantasy"
Truly genius
Your relationship with the environment is always in harmony i like that
Thank you for not putting music over Alan Watts

Yes. That's my biggest pet peeve with his talks on youtube.

What a great clip. Watts is an endless fountain of insight.
may all the beings in all the worlds be happy. let us all be kind to others, and let us pray that other are kind to us and let us be the way we are.
So observant, and has the ability to break things down to their simplest point.
He would have changed this generation, had he been alive, as he has changed me.
I know what you mean, we need people like him now more then ever.
Same here. We're so fortunate to live in the age of the internet where such wise characters thoughts and ideas can be frozen in time.

Great for the mind, body, and soul.
So great to find non-AI version of Alan Watts here on UA-cam... like a precious gem hidden in the shit of AI technology... ❤️

I was not aware of this talk, thank you!
No music: just Alan!
What's withbthe 3:55 yawner? Obviously startles Alan for a split second... Why is that so awesome?

Thanks for the lack of music the dude beating off and breathing erratically into the microphone was an interesting substitute.
I hate knowing this man is dead..... if there is anything in the end for us, I hope he get's to see it in it's entirety.
very good, I like your view.
Can someone tell me what lecture this is from please?
listen to this with piano in the background and you will live
What talk is this from? I thought I had heard most of his on youtube but this one was new.
