    Have you ever noticed that right before you start writing or drawing, every possibility is available to you? That's nothingness. Nothingness is infinity. Every possibility but no concrete existence. And then when you begin writing or drawing what you do is you put a limit on the infinity. You remove most of the possibilities and you're left with something, existence. This universe is exactly the same. It came out of nothingness, infinity, and it limited itself, and that created significance and existence. Beauty.

      x/79/plasticized echolocation, Omg yes! I've tried explaining this exact same idea to friends using the exact same metaphor with an artist and a blank sheet of paper! Or sometimes its a sculptor and a chunk of rock. But every potential possibility is contained in the void (everythingness and nothingness, two sides of the same coin) until form manifests by the artist pushing away the void. That's why I'm not afraid of returning to the state of "nothingness" when I die. More afraid of not living than dying. I think it's awesome that somebody else shares the same idea almost word for word.

      I think it is probable that Jesus Christ knew this as well. He was enlightened. And that's probably why he was tortured. If a person can really say that there is no suffering, then there will be people who're curious to find out if that'll remain true in circumstances of being inflicted with pain.
      I wonder, if we put Buddha, Watts, and another other person on the cross and tortured them, would they still say the same things about suffering?

      The media always tries to tell you:
      You need "this" in order to have it more easy or "thus" in order to be more dated.
      "This" to be more entertained and "thus" to live healthier.
      Basically the media tells you the following:
      You need "something" what you do not need.
      Its all about to somehow fill your life with "things" that are absolutly not "needed"
      As long as we "sleep" we are no danger.
      I hope one day the sheep becomes the lion again and remember his true nature!

      ***** You think too much. It's easy to see if only you're keen at observing patterns. It's as simple as: right could not exist without left, and vice versa. If you can really see that that is so, you won't have any trouble seeing that something=everything and nothing; and nothing and everything=something. If you can stop thinking, stop worrying, stop trying to get something out of life, you will be filled with not only infinity, but something that goes well, well beyond it. Another thing you might want to consider is taking an internal martial art. You can get this SAME understanding from something like Tai Chi. Be wary though if a master has you help him demonstrate in your early days, as your hand can be vice-grip wrapped around his arm yet he will become nothing right before you, and, well, you really can't hold onto nothing. Don't be frightened, lol.

    • @Lloydz0r
      @Lloydz0r 10 років тому +6

      ***** Everything is contradictory or paradoxical :-) Nothing and something are not the same thing, yet both depend on each other like poles of a magnet - Explicitly different but implicitly one. You are nothing so that you can receive everything, in the same way that a mirror has no colour and can therefore reflect all colours; and that by life having no meaning - every individual can manifest their own meaning :)

    • @Lloydz0r
      @Lloydz0r 10 років тому +11

      Because it is us that says 'this is something', by giving it a name or putting it into a concept. But reality escapes all concepts, and I would say that the only truth is that there is no truth.
      I don't mean nothing in the sense that all which is physical is not actually there. But all that exists has no meaning until we give it our own meaning. Without our eyes the sun would not be light, and without our ears and our concept of time - music would just be a random mess of meaningless vibrations.
      I therefore like to think that everything is nothing, but that we - without knowing how we do it - turn that nothing into everything :)

    • @Lloydz0r
      @Lloydz0r 10 років тому +3

      Well it's just my opinion :) which is all anything is. You choose logic, I'll choose imagination. But remember, as in the words of Einstein - Logic will get you from A to B, but imagination will take you everywhere ;)

    • @XShollaj
      @XShollaj 9 років тому +10

      +ReZdItalia sometimes this is what i think is the purpose of life, to find that there is no meaning, just a way to eternal oblivion , the only pure state with no pain, stress or anxiety just nothingness. Every form of understanding we put behind a self made meaning means nothing really

    • @Ӝ̵̨̄-к6ж
      @Ӝ̵̨̄-к6ж 8 років тому +13

      For existence to "mean" something would be the same as it "representing" something higher than itself. A mountain doesn't "mean" anything. Nor does a tree "mean" anything. A picture of a tree means something but that's because we humans created it. Symbols and meanings are a product of our culture and cannot help us understand reality, the raw universe right in front of you.

    • @ReZdItalia

      zururubuurr! ! And that's possibly the most terrifyingly-beautiful part about all of this; the very universe needs no meaning nor purpose to exist. It just is...

      Nothingness is crazy for me.. what is nothingness like for all of eternity?

    • @Sparks217
      @Sparks217 7 років тому +17

      +So Tree It's not something to be feared because when you become nothing, there would be no "I" to even perceive the state of nothingness. The only reason why it "sounds scary" is because you exist right now trying to grasp or comprehend that which cannot be grasped. When you actually become nothing, there will be no "you" anymore to even be scared of the nothingness. 1000 years could go by and you wouldn't know because you don't exist. It will be as though you never even existed in the first place. Try to remember where you were 5 years before you were born....that's right, all you can see is "blackness" or "nothingness". That is where you came from and it's where you will return. You come from dust and unto dust you shall return. It's fucking beautiful man. It means that there really is nothing to worry about at all. Life isn't to be taken so seriously because every moment is fleeting into the next moment. Everything is temporary. You can be in the most extreme pain imaginable but even that comes to end at some point. It's great! We get to place our own meaning on this meaningless existence. We are nothing. Papa Bless.

    many of these comments are long ago sent to others to read. up until this year as a 22 year old female, I have always felt connected to the beauty of the nature, sky, sun, moon, ECT on this planet. since I was little I always felt something was missing.... I felt different than others. I knew there was a greater meaning to life than seeing miserable people on the trains going to work everyday and night. I knew I never wanted that life. I listened to others way too much and I've come to the point where I am trying to follow my purpose.

      Totally agree. I experienced this.
      That 'Nothingness', which is also referred to as - 'Prior' to Consciousness or Para Brahman, is Everything -- the Absolute.
      Attempting to describe this with 'words and 'concepts' is kinda impossible, as I'm sure you understand. Alan Watts was a follower of Advaita Vedanta (as I am as well).
      There is a small series of yt videos (and clips) which I love - called 'Rays of the Absolute'. It is more into the teachings/instructions/pointers of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj and composed by Stephen Wolinsky.

    Suicide is everyones choice or at least I feel it should be. I dont judge but ask yourself this first: since death is inevitable, it is GOING to happen, why would you want to hurry it up or fast forward life sort of speak by committing suicide when you could spend that time exploring every aspect of the world and your life? There is some really interesting things to see, hear, touch, feel emotionally, taste and so much more. I know life doesn't always feel that great, trust me, I know like everyone else does, I almost did kill myself a few years ago. I lost 5 people really close to me within the matter of months, just one after the other, some family, some life long close friends, fell into a deep depression, lost my job, my GF of 5 years left, i lost my place to live and had no family to turn to. I ended up living in my 2000 ford focus. I started researching death and suicide while scrunched up in the back seat of my car in a walmart parking lot at like 1 or 2 am every night more and more. Searching ways to do it, the quickest ways, the easiest ways, the least painful ways, do you go to hell? do you come back as a bug to be punished? etc etc etc. I was one second, one step, one thought, one action away from finally saying good bye, the closest ive ever been to suicide, the most pure, painful, most powerful, most sincere feeling of wanting to die, i've never wanted anything so much until I stumbled across a youtube video in my search about death so I watched it. It was this video by Alan Watts. And personally, for me, it made me feel like purposely ending my life was such a waste. Like, its going to happen eventually so why not try to enjoy this life and experience as much of it as possible before the big unknown happens? Its like (for the sports fans out there) watching football or a basket ball game and wanting to skip the entire game just to see the final score. You want to miss out on the adventure in between just to see what the outcome is even though that outcome is coming eventually anyways. I feel like whether im poor or rich, homeless, live in a one room shack or a mansion, there is still a lot that life has to offer through experiences and interactions and adventures. Im not taking into consideration
    someone who may have a painful terminal illness or something along those lines and wants to depart. This is just a basic view on life and death based on my experience. Just my two cents. And yet again I feel suicide is a personal choice and I don't judge and neither should anyone else. Sorry about any grammatical or punctuation errors in this but even with them I feel i got the point across. Much love everyone!

      Pewdiepie smosh no actually I'm not. After I seen that video, it lead me down the rabbit hole to another another one of his video which lead to another and another then drifted out onto other videos. Watching all of these while I was still living in my car mind you, and I would just sit and think about these new perspectives that Mr watts explained and then really weird things started happening, awesome unexplainable things. Which lead me to meeting new people which lead to places to stay here and there which lead to me doing odd jobs with people and saving a little money and then a long time friend I haven't talked to or seen In a long time randomly hit me up and invited me to stay with him. Then I started working full time and now I make decent money. Later on I would learn what I believe to be the law of attraction that helped me because I wanted and needed something so bad combined with positivity that alan watts instilled in me and gave me a whole new perspective on life is what I think did it.

    I used to be so scared of being nothing, before I was born, I was nothing, sure. But I've lived, and I guess being nothing again is scary. But the best part about dying is, that you don't have to think about anything when you're dead, it seems so scary but amazing at the same time, it's not like you are just a bodiless soul in an endless dark room, trapped alone with your thoughts forever, it's okay. I've decided to just live my life, experience this something, and get ready for the beautiful nothingness. I don't know what I believe, but I'm kind of hoping that there is no afterlife, if I was Christian then I would think, 'How could Jesus let his children turn to nothing?' I guess it's simple, you born to live to die, you can create a person of yourself, play this game, its over before you know it, and it doesn't have to be scary.

    The Essence of Alan Watts Quotes :
    “So if you really go the whole way and see how you feel at the prospect of vanishing forever. Have all your efforts, and all your achievements, and all your attainments turning into dust and nothingness. What is the feeling? What happens to you? That's what it's all going to come to. And for some reason or other, we are supposed to find this depressing. Do you see in a way, how that is saying: the most real state is the state of nothing? But if somebody is going to argue that the basic reality is nothingness. Where does all this come from? Obviously from nothingness. Once again you get how it looks behind your eyes. You see?
    So in this way, by seeing that nothingness is the fundamental reality, and you see it's your reality. Then how can anything contaminate you? All the idea of you being scared, and put out and worried, and so on, this is nothing, it's a dream. Because you're really nothing. But this is most incredible nothing. So cheer up! You see?
    The essence of your mind is intrinsically pure. Pure means clear, void.
    See? If you think of this idea of nothingness as mere blankness, and you hold onto this idea of blankness then kind of grizzly about it, you haven't understood it. Nothingness is really like the nothingness of space, which contains the whole universe. All the sun and the stars and the mountains, and rivers, and the good men and bad men, and the animals, and insects, and the whole bit. All are contained in void. So out of this void comes everything and You Are IT. What else could You BE?”
    ― Alan W. Watts, The Essence of Alan Watts

    This is one of the, if not the most important Alan Watts snippets. What he’s describing here is the Hindu idea of Maya, or the “life illusion”, where everything is actually nothing, and nothing is actually everything. It is also related to the Buddhist principle of impermanence, where nothing stays the same and everything is constantly dissolving and unpredictable. The peace you get from understanding this is about as profound as it gets. This is pretty much the central concept of many traditions and mature philosophies.
    I’m so grateful to Alan Watts for catalyzing my understanding of these things.

      Have you ever been in school and realize your just sitting there, in a room, on a planet, in a solar system, in a universe of void and the unknown? Seeing all other beings assume that school and life is their reality, when you realize its all made up by humans, I believe that is what it means to awaken from the illusion of life. You work with your time to spend it enjoying your time. In the end its all for nothing... to be nothing, to feel nothing, to.... nothing. Life means Death, Death means Life.

      I know how you feel.

    • @DoYouFeelLucky
      @DoYouFeelLucky 10 років тому +15

      I would say, who is it that wants to end what? The mind creates all these ideas, images, concepts, worries, problems etc - all put together by thought. The mind is of course an aspect of you, but if you watch these ideas, such as wanting 'to end it all sooner' see what happens to your point of view over time. It is your anxiety about death speaking, the mind, old patterns of thought. You are the void which perceives all of this. I you remain in this 'emptiness' or state of peaceful mind and don't latch onto any of these ideas, as we often get so used to doing out of automatic habit, you will find your need to identify or attach yourself to any thoughts or ideas weakens dramatically. The mind has no limit to it's ability to keep you in that state of confusion or illusion whatever you want to call it - naturally it contains all your worst gremlins you've accumulated throughout your life, the things that really get to you. But once you see clearly how you are the neutral perceiver of even your own mind, which is taking place within you also, then it loses it's power to overwhelm you. When you can see an infinite beauty in even the most downtrodden of people or dilapidated of places life becomes an immense joy and nothing can drag you down. The mind is still obviously there, but you see it for what it really is and it becomes playful rather than sinister.

    • @NormanconEVE
      @NormanconEVE 10 років тому +4

      DoYouFeelLucky That is well written. I understand what you mean by realizing that we are the neutral perceiver's of even our own minds. I use this to in some cases to block emotion or pain, sometimes just block physical feeling. And the immense beauty of anything and everything around can be one of the most amazing things to behold. People seem to lack the broad view on life and it holds them back. I find a lot of enjoyment from the interest people find in my having this point of view. I have had several people say its weird they I think this way, but at the same time its so amazing that people don't do it more often. The mind is an amazing thing, but I can not seem to use that understanding of my own mind to stop myself from becoming overwhelmed. Its almost as though I loose control of my mind, I am just there witnessing my mind wreak havoc with my emotions. Quickly fall into a mode of helplessness. Lately I found that if I can gain the willingness to go be with one of my friends, get my mind to break off the topic, I can find relief instead of using sleep to reset my broken state of mind. It is very interesting to me, just the way this works. But I am also frustrating as I cant fully understand how it works or how to control it.

    I have thought like this for a long time. I think that Alan Watts speaks sense. We don’t know what happens after death, so this must happen!

    When you’re home staring at the wall for hours until it becomes nothingness and looks back at you

    My best explanation of nothing that i had with a friend is this, "You know when you go to bed at night, and some nights you dont dream, you just close your eyes and then when you open them its bright outside. That moment of blank from when you fell asleep to when you woke up, to you it seemed like an instant but in reality it was 8 to 10 hours. so in that 8 to 10 hours of just complete blank time, that is what i believe to be Nothing."
