    Alan Watts (1915-1973) who held both a master's degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best known as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. He authored more than 20 excellent books on the philosophy and psychology of religion, and lectured extensively, leaving behind a vast audio archive. With characteristic lucidity and humor Watts unravels the most obscure ontological and epistemological knots with the greatest of ease. - deoxy.org/watts.htm
    "Inability to accept the mystic experience is more than an intellectual handicap. Lack of awareness of the basic unity of organism and environment is a serious and dangerous hallucination. For in a civilization equipped with immense technological power, the sense of alienation between man and nature leads to the use of technology in a hostile spirit---to the "conquest" of nature instead of intelligent co-operation with nature". You don't ignore anything, you just witness and watch the thoughts and images and everything that is happening within your mind. Imagine sitting at the side of the road and watching the people and the traffic pass. If you could only see the distance between the witness and the thoughts, you'd realize you are not your thoughts.

  • @RevBobAldo

    Alan Watts was the most helpful thinker/writer (philosopher) who was also a native English speaker in my opinion. I just realized that. I must add though, on the subject t hand, that science does say memories are stored physically in the brain.
    The intriguing question that then arises is "In what form are they stored?"; and how does that form (presumably electro-chemical) get transformed into the images and words we know as memories?"

    • @LivingAnExaminedLife
      @LivingAnExaminedLife 10 років тому +2

      Mainstream neuroscience promotes the model of the brain as a 'container' for storing thoughts and memories. In this way the brain is seen as a sort of biological computer, or at least, a sort of 'storage box' for everything about a particular person's life experience, skills, and personality.
      Another possibility, that I prefer to consider, is the idea that our brain works more like an antenna. According to this model the brain is more signal transceiver than storage box, with specific regions of neurones tuned-in to specific dimensions of consciousness or experience. In this model, neurotransmitter molecules may transmit information to/and from another dimension outside the four we know-you might think of this as iCloud for the soul, with the brain uploading and downloading content from another dimension-the dimension where the 'real you' (the Godhead) resides.
      This type of theoretical signal-relaying might occur at the quantum level. There are curious things going on with quantum superposition and observation of electrons, for example. Google the Quantum Slit Experiment. Through the Wormhole made an excellent short presentation on this you can find on UA-cam.
      There are also neuroscientists (whose names escape me) working at an Arizona university who have also put forth the idea that quantum phenomena play a central, still-mysterious role in how our brains work. The storage-box-computer concept of the brain appears prematurely conclusive (and problematic) in view of the mysteries we are unravelling around quantum mechanics.
      The experiential proof of this is to drink Ayahuasca or vaporise the neurotransmitter nn,DMT. The profound, life-changing experience of these tools reveals through experience that the brain is much more than a shoebox of egocentric memories. The real story of the brain is more magical than mainstream neuroscientists presently realise.

    • @RevBobAldo
      @RevBobAldo 10 років тому

      Your idea is, of course, not new - just newly dressed up in "scientific" jargon. As you probably know, the brain is considered a sense organ (for sensing thoughts) in much of Buddhist literature. However, I don't think getting stoned on Ayahuasca or any psychedelic can be "proof" of anything but gullibility myself. "Anything possessing any sign is illusory." (Here you see my distinct prejudice against drug induced experience, as opposed to what in zen is called a "great satori", which, along with the kundalini experience, I know to be natural and as "real" as a heart attack.) Different strokes for different folks.

  • @br88dy

    Everything you need to hear doesn't go beyond 2:30. The constant "boop" you learn from childhood is what creates the ego, which makes you feel separate from (yet a victim of) your thoughts. It feels good when you focus your attention on the "separation", but that's just enhancing the feeling of being a separate self. That's not quite what he's trying to teach here.
    The next step is to ask that separate self, "Who is this self that understands Alan's words?" and "Where exactly is this self located if it's separate?" Is it not just another appearance in your present moment experience?

    If we didn't have names, it would be hard to know who someone is talking to.
    Names even help babies know they're being spoken to. It makes communication much easier.
    Also, if you allow your kid to name himself or herself, they're most likely going to pick something they will heavily regret in a few years. But I don't think it'd be legal not to, because they'd need a birth certificate. If you avoided that successfully and they wanted to change their name again later, major problems would arise.

I live an un-paused stream of thoughts and dreams like a child as well as act without second thoughts or self-reflection. You are acknowledging the existence of a thinker, thoughts are thoughts and are just a flow like a wave, saying to sit aside from your OWN thoughts is proposing someone else is creating or maintaining this flow, when it is actually you who is creating the thoughts. but perhaps because you have developed your "thinker" to be real, when you are involved in your meditation you see the two personalities between mind and self (who you identify as). but the truth is they are one

    The ego's vile, vicious, innocuous, and diabolical approach to things is the reason people can't get along and why they fight each other to the death. God really won't show up much in one's life until the ego is resolved to some extent. Surrendering daily to God.Being humble unto the Lord. Loving oneself. Being kind, caring, considerate, and compassionate to everyone in every case is the way to transform ones life and wake up to this new way of life. Log on to Robert Smalley org page for more.

    I'm still trying to decide if Eckhart Tolle is disagreeing with Watts on the subject of the thinker behind the thoughts. Tolle states emphatically that there is an awareness behind the thoughts and the feelings; that there is an identity behind form. He calls it the "I Am". In other words, that which is aware of the thought is not the same thing as the thought. Watts seems to be saying that there is no awareness or identity outside the thoughts, perceptions and feelings; that any form of identity is pure illusion. I'm just not sure what to think here.

    • @viplavkadam8049
