I was almost 30 when I started doing UA-cam Seriously, and I didn't become a full-time content creator until I was over 30. You can start a UA-cam channel when over 30 and still be successful, just not always in the ways you hoped or in the ways younger content creators do.
If you're in your 30s you can become a full-time UA-camr doing education or lifestyle content and have a career of 10-15 years earning good money, but with entertainment, it has a shorter lifespan and is harder to relate to people 10-20 years younger than you. That's why a lot of UA-camrs who started in their 20s catering to teenagers and children, don't last more than 5-7 years and struggle to be relevant for more than 10 years.
If you start a UA-cam channel as a creator over 30, you also have more responsibility and can't take the same financial risks.

Easy! I am 61 and do not know a lot creators under 30, hehe. I struggle to survive on UA-cam but can manage this and want to encourage everyone older to leave their comfort zone.
I'm 52 Roberto. I'm about to get it on and poppin'! #prayforme.... (been following you for about a year)
Amen, I’m over 50 and creating content!
@@PsychologyPop come on, I’m 51 and I’m on my way! Let’s show these young buck how to really do it!
Almost 62, three grown-@55 taxpayer kids, two little grandkids. Discovered after 40 year tech career I seem to be an artist. Struggle continues. EDIT: also Roberto that’s just a disturbing use for DALL-E or whatever it was lol. Age 89 goes back to using greenscreen.
It is never too late to start. Age 62. Started at age 60. In a flooded niche (gaming). Coming up on third channel anniversary. Wasn't trying to grow the channel for a year and a half, because I was doing this for therapy. Started actually trying to grow the channel about 6 months ago, once disability was confirmed. Doubled subscribers. Still not even close to monetization, but that isn't my actual goal. My goal is to learn the skills of UA-cam, through something I enjoy, for another project I am building. Probably going live this Spring. Know YOUR goals for getting on UA-cam, and stay focused on them.
I just subbed! 😀
@@CarlyUTube Thank you! I hope I can continue to earn that.
Have to always play to your strengths, be grounded and put in the work
@@PaulPlaysVR indeed!
@@PaulPlaysVR I'm glad I could give you some encouragement!!! Like I said, focus on YOUR goals for doing it. And, go for it to the full extent you desire!!!
Also, thank you for subscribing. As I told Carly (above), I hope I can continue to earn that.
Always love your content Roberto and I agree with you 1000%. I began my journey as a content creator in 2018 at the age of 43, with 4 children, a full-time job and a home business in website development. I do not have a degree in business nor any official training in marketing. Over 4 years, I have made 650 educational videos in the niche of Home Theater. In 2021, I reached 100K in total revenue as a content creator. In 2022, I had a 25% revenue increase and crossed 100K in subscribers. I'm living proof that older creators can indeed create a successful business as a content creator. EVERYONE has value they can add to the world. It's NEVER too late to start. Here's to 2023!
Also love the thumbnail of this video!
Congratulations on your success. Me too. Full time content creator in my late 50s with a teenager's dream job :)
Love this! My spouse and I started a channel 3 months ago (I’m 45 he’s 51). We hope for 1K subs by the year’s end. Our niche is modern board gaming.
Awesome!!!
I'm 57 and started this channel at 51. Currently getting ready to launch my 3rd channel and I wouldn't have it any other way. Learning editing and filming and everything that goes with YT is keeping my brain working, I'm sure of it!
and I also work full time in a regular job lol.
Do I need to pay for a course or I can just learn how to speak on YT through other content creators?
@@ksnjos001 There's many creators on there that have done videos about being comfortable on camera but the best advice I can give is just to do it and you will improve.
57 you’re a spring chicken!
@@Synthpoptroubadour OMG tell my knees that please haha
Yes! I started at 30 and am now nearly 32. Just hit 15k subs yesterday! I'm so glad you made this! YOu've been a huge inspiration to me and I frequently share your videos with people wanting to get started ☺
Excellent video, Roberto! I started UA-cam at 43 years old, and it was the BEST DECISION of my LIFE! Thank you so much for your content and for inspiring us from an older generation, Roberto.
👊🏾👊🏾 appreciate you! Sometime this year would love to do something together!
I started my channel because of TLA. I heard him say if your over 35 you have knowledge that others will want to hear.
My fiancé watches your channel consistently, he told me this about you as well this is so cool
I'll be 45 in February. I used to be scared to create content cuz I didn't think anyone would care and I was getting to old. I wrote and recorded a Christmas Poetry album. I decided to just go for it and put it out there. It got views and comments.
I also noticed some of my older tech videos are getting views. These are videos I did months ago! I'm not giving up anymore! I'm going to keep creating content and putting myself out there more!
That is pretty sick. Keep it up
@@thepositivecreator Thanks man!
It never even dawned on me NOT to create content because of my mid 40's age. I'm glad I didn't hold me back.
Nah, I'm almost 35 and I'm just getting started, baby! 😁🔥
Thank you for ALWAYS giving it to us in a straight forward way. You helped me to become one of those OLD people who became successful at UA-cam. 100,000 + subscribers and 100,000 + dollars this year. I'm 46.
From the dumb-dumb who had her camera off for the first half of my Zoom with you.
Hey 👋🏾 your channel looks interesting … I’ll be tuning in after watching this … 😊
@@CarolCreates thank you so much ❤️
@@TisHotMessHistory really interesting 😊 I’ve just subscribed ✨
@@CarolCreates well, thank you so very much!
Life is harder when you complicate the simple things. Enjoy what you have and live your life.
Hey I just wanted to tell you that being a part of your Creator Academy changed everything for me as a creator I started to take my brand serious, and that actually led to me being on a TV show for Food network and then it led to me going back to school to start my own business and now I’m a business owner. Thank you it’s all because I started to invest in my self by taking your courses, so thank you!
Thank you so much! I love hearing that and it's great to see you were able to do that by focusing on the brand you're building! Be sure to post this in the group for the Academy Members and I will be sure to let Andy know too! Also maybe one day we can talk about this on my podcast.
@@RobertoBlake I honestly would love that! Thank you again you changed my entire direction and the way I think about being a creator and I thought I would share how much you helped me since I’m a creator over 30 😉😊
WOW. You got on a TV show with under 5K.. and I was out here thinking that kind of thing needs atleast 50-100K subs 🤯
Congratulations 👏... Keep going strong
I started my channel when I was 60 as one part of my recycling business. It opened a creative side of me that I didn't know I had. Now I thoroughly enjoy every aspect of content creation and sharing what I know. Age should never be an excuse. Another good vid Roberto.
I don't mind saying I'm over 50. I have benefited from the clarity that comes with age and experience that Roberto talked about. Also, I care 0% about anything that resembles "fame." That's a distraction. I approach the channel as work. It's thrilling work but I make sure it's all practical, evergreen, and educational. And I spice it up now and then with some reaction videos to add just a tad of entertainment value.
I just turned 49 yesterday and I started UA-cam last year at this time..600K views and almost 3K subs today here in Gatlinburg TN Smoky Mountains Park
That's actually really solid!
I started mine at 42. I'm 48 now! Loving every single second.
We're over 40 and agree with this 1000%. We've been in and out on UA-cam (working in corporate America), but are "returning" with intention and finally taking it seriously. We feel we have more to share now. Thanks for this Roberto. You're still top-tier!
I am 59 turning 60 this year, and I think it might be a little bit harder because of my age, but I am much better than before. Everything I do I do better than I did when I was young. I was so confused when young, but I don´t think today´s youth are as confused as my generation was. Often because of an authoritarian upbringing... that is devestating. But with time you free yourself from that. In fact my favourite food channel at the moment, is made by and is with a man in his 70:s. He excels in his cooking and in his presentation.
Thanks for the encouraging words. I’m 57 and just started my channel. Slow but hopefully steady! With wife, job, 4 kids and a dog….
Keep it up! It's not easy and the lack of time freedom is a thing... but yeah you've got this! Keep pushing to 1000 subs and be sure to watch my videos about reaching your first 1000 subscribers.
Age 62. Wife, 4 dogs, 4 adult kids. You CAN do this!!!
I just Subbed😊
I am 62 and hubby is 57. We started our first channel just over 8 months ago and it was monetized in less than 5 months. We are getting ready to launch our second channel and see where that takes us! Thank you! ✌️
I turned 50 last year...probably gonna hit 100k subs this year. I feel like it's actually almost a benefit to be older here -- there's an underserved audience of Gen X'ers who want to watch people their own age.
This is especially true in the personal development space. A lot of the people you see in that space have little to no responsibility so they have time to do things that your average 30+ with a 9to5 and Kids etc. doesn’t. So their advice is hard to relate to by someone who’s overwhelmed with responsibilities and trying to optimize.
This is a good perspective
I’m about to turn 30 next week; and even as an established creator, this video was refreshing and informative. I get waves of imposter syndrome in my creative journey, especially as I get older; so what you shared here hit home. Thanks for doing what you do man! 😌🤙🏽
Glad it was helpful!
Roberto you are wise and so correct on this topic. I'm 57 and have two channel that are monetized. My audience on both channels are mostly 35 and up. I'm ok with that. I'm not worried about attracting viewers that are young. I know they aren't interested in watching my content and that's ok. Really enjoyed this video. 😊
I love your straight forward approach when you tell us facts! I was able to really hear what you are saying when I listened to one of your videos last year. I then decided to just enjoy my channel as a diary/hobby/infotainment place to uplift anyone who checks out my page. I let go of the dream and I totally just enjoy my reality of posting things I enjoy in hopes that so others will also enjoy. I am over 60. I'm happier now. No pressure. Thank you Roberto 🙋🏾💛
Looking much younger than 60...Thank the ancestors...
I'm starting at 31 and the mental olympics to convenience myself I'm not too late was a lot. I'm glad you made this.
I’m going to be 40 this year and this is the exact question I’ve been asking myself. Thank you for the great content.
I'm a gaming educator/entertainer channel that didn't start actively pursuing youtube in a serious manner until after age 40. It is working for me, I think, largely in part because of the audience for my primary niche within the niche being mostly an older demographic.
Roberto Keeps it's 💯 and is so balanced. Delivering a Harsh and Hopeful perspective rooted in reality and well intentions.🙏🏾🧘🏾♂️
Couldn't agree more
"When you're your youngest and you're your most energetic and your most attractive..." Truthfully and compassionately said, Roberto. Thank you! Motivation is a good niche for mature creators also.
Never too late, to me age is just a number on here, I started making videos over 10 years ago and now at 36 i've started making proper videos like my latest ones.
Any race, any age, any sexuality, any religion, any disabled or non disabled are welcomed on youtube and we need more poeple like them.
I’m 68 years old and I’m still having fun doing videos. You’re never too old. This video is just awesome.
Thank you for your takes. I’m 38 and just recently got started on building my UA-cam page. Listening to people like you reassure me that I’m doing the right thing.
This is so encouraging. I’m 32 and started my channel last month. For a brief time I considered doing the popular things, likely would be done someone in their 20s but then I chose not to. So with my channel I share my life as a wife, new mom, and life experiences as a working professional and the many hats I’ve worn. It’s simpler to come up with content and produce weekly, and my channel is thriving!
The point about appealing to an affluent, actionable demographic is very true. When I look at my own😮 audience, it trends towards that older demographic that are looking for solutions they can implement - so they are ready to commit to action.
I chuckle when you say “older” in your 30s and 40s… I started a channel 3 years ago today at age 60 and getting close to 100K!
Same! I'm 66. 60 is the new 40.
Not too late! I'm turning 40 this year and I feel like I'm in my prime for content creation. 😌
I turned eighty this year and am having fun making videos, I have no expectations, don't care about making money and don't care about my subscriber count, even if no one watched my videos I would continue making them. Thank you for your input.
Keep it up
maybe I'm projecting, but I also believe that content creators who start older are more willing to adapt and shift/pivot to cater to the demographic's needs over time. whereas some younger creators do whats most effective because they found success a certain way initially, so they aren't willing to break the mold as much and challenge themselves with different types of content to explore with. that influence and pressure to remain the same as always and box yourself in without growing in other ways is tempting because you don't want to lose any momentum.
I tend to agree but I also think that has to do with the whole finding yourself thing vs accepting reality and being willing to adapt and learn from the past
It makes sense though! Is older creators have experience pivoting and trying new things throughout our life and careers, we had to! You are not projecting it’s just true. Now some of the younger creators figured this out themselves and/or were mentored by older people to learn this (Mr Beast is a prime example)
Plenty of over 30 creators out here on UA-cam! Thanks for this video to encourage newcomers to the platform. If you're out there wanting to grow a channel, I would say the best things you can do is humble yourself and take the time to learn about what actually works in terms of UA-cam content and have realistic expectations. Being here on Roberto's channel is a great start!
Thanks Roberto! There aren't enough UA-cam educators discussing the challenges of being an older content creator. It's a tough gig balancing a career, family life, and a myriad of other responsibilities. Something I wish I had considered (or was more aware of) before beginning this UA-cam obsession a few years ago.
PS Love your background :)
I started at 58. I I probably should have started a crafting channel, first. But, I am having so much fun and learning a lot.
I thought about and concluded most of these points. I always appreciate your directness. Hopefully, I hit 1000 subscribers before I retire, soon.😅
#gonnakeeppushing
Some of favorite content creators are either over or headed to 30 or even 40. Kurtis Conner is almost 30, Aba and Preach are headed to 30 and 40, the Film Riot gang is as well is in their 30's minus the little sister.
Exactly. These are some of my favorite creators too.
Thank you for making this!! (Even though I'm 23 and this was mainly for content creators over 30)
The first video I've seen talking about the difference age can make. At a time when I was thinking about which direction to take my channel (entertainment / tutorial). What you talked about applies to me, but in reverse (i.e; focus on entertainment, because when it comes to tutorials, I'll be competing with older, more experienced versions of me 😆)
You bring up some very valid points! This is great commentary. For me, the hard part is creating something I love out of desire to finish a project rather than creating something in the hopes of monetizing the final product. I can def see why younger people succeed on social media in different ways because younger people often tip the scales when it comes to new trends and fast-changing, new ideas. Great video! 👍🏼 😊
Maybe focus like you said on a project you want to complete but try to take into consideration how you're going to make money and whether that looks like focusing on your main career and maybe that means this is more of a hobby if monetizing it isn't going to be the priority.
@@RobertoBlake I definitely see my teeny tiny UA-cam channel as a hobby but that’s mostly due to “prior commitments” aka life 🤪 .. I do think the benefit to creating as a hobby is that (for me at least) I’m not as worried about my “fans” not liking what I’m doing .. but hey that raises another topic about young people being competitively better at social media because they naively want to be popular or famous .. just an idea ..
Young people have nothing to lose while Older ppl have been programmed to play safe all the time!
I agree with many points shared here, but I have some thoughts which may differ a bit this is likely due to my unusual lived experiences hence I sometimes have a different perspective of popular opinions as my mind attempts to process opinions shaped by unfamiliar life experiences. I learned many years ago that it's also difficult for some to proces lived experience like my own as it's not the most commonly heard of or lived experiences that many are familiar with. yes elders tend to have a sense of clearity around early elder years, but for those who's lives may not have followed the usual paths or hit the usual life milestones personal development can be delayed and goals can be harder to achieve, these factors aside. I agree It's not too late to start. thankfully this platform exists and everyone can give it a try no matter what age even gaming, who knows someone might be one of the first over 40 or 50 to have a successful gaming channel. I hope you have a great new year Roberto 💙✨
It’s never too late to start! Love this logical and inspirational look.
I’ve been writing online for a while, but at 31 I’m just now starting to post video content. Just get going folks!
It's not too late,I started at 40,one year now, thanks happy new year.
Love this. Thanks, Roberto! I feel more confident with what I've got going now. I appreciate your videos, man. They have REALLY helped me wrap my brain around all of the aspects of content creation.
I started my channel aged 47. Still on the journey, and loving it! So many amazing things have happened from it, and it's even starting to make money... which is a bonus! There's no better day than today to get started!
Plan for the future! yes! I started my channel doing Hauls not knowing anything about UA-cam. I moved into adding unboxing videos as well branding myself to be more of a lifestyle channel. I think not niching down made me start to grow way slower than when I did only hauls but the brand deals have been coming in steadily. I’m it it for the long game, thank u for the info!
I will 38 this year & being a content creator has changed my life. It all started from UA-cam. Thanks for sharing.
Just turned 29 and it's the year to make it happen! I know what I want now and this video reaffirmed everything for me!
Dude. I needed this video. Mid-30s here, gearing up to start a UA-cam channel. Wish me luck. Oh & I just started reading your book. Congrats & great work bro! 👏🏽
You my friend are wise beyond your years! Thanks for being realistic and awesome! 🙏🏾
Excellent review and analysis - I am over 50 and been 'planning' a new UA-cam channel so found your discussion to be honest and timely. Thank you, T
Hey this is very encouraging! I also just happen to be 38 years old. It is amazing to see how far you have come from where you started. I just recently started thinking about my own channel and how I want to take it more seriously. This was very motivating. There are tons of people out there in their 30s and 40s who want to make UA-cam a serious income for themselves. So this was right on time man! Keep up the good work 😊
I love your channel and videos Roberto. You always make excellent points and keep me grounded whenever I start to get discouraged with youtube. I may not always comment, but I do have the notification bell on so that I don't miss an upload 💕 HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎉
Thank you this video was helpful and when you mention tv and movie review channels I recently started one and have been having fun making content for it it even out grew my gaming channel a little.I will be using the community tab more asking others what they want to see because the show I talk about season will be ending soon and make sure I want to pivot to the right thing next that I watch. I do have some anime on there but I gotta research more on what anime videos people watch because reviews are doing alright.
That’s actually a really good strategy
I just turned 39 and I am just getting started. I feel so late to the game, but this absolutely gives me hope. Great points about our advantages as “older” UA-camrs (when did I become old?)
Started my channel around 4 years ago. 70 now and thinking about pivoting or turning my content into more vlog style. So much to learn but it's great fun :)
That's EXACTLY when I started doing UA-cam tbh...I think it's way over blown that being 30+ is too old because your wisdom and hopefully lack of impulse can allow you to be better at navigating the pitfalls that come from some of the younger creators
Thank you! I started gaming when the pandemic hit and it helped me sane. Wasn't planning on growing either just wanted to have some sort of therapy at the end of a crazy day. But lately I've been thinking I might as well challenge myself and grow this channel. I'm growing really slow and trying to figure out how to grow a bit faster starting this year. Good luck to us all!
Thanks for this. A lot of what you said resonated with me. I'm in my forties and out here creating. Love your channel book.
I’m over 30 so this message was great. Entering my 2nd full year of UA-cam and I enjoying it. Question, is that background real? I LOVE IT. Oh wait, it’s a green screen?… I need to use mine. This looks so cozy.
I loved this, thank you! I am pushing 40 🙀and just learning these past few months how fun it is to be on youtube, but def get discouraged by how young other successful creators are.
Wow your background is phenomenal. Thanks for another video packed with wisdom.
The magic of green screen! I did a tutorial k. This actually
Dude I LOVE LOVE LOVE your new setup!
I came across your channel on UA-cam as I was searching for a video about being if being over 30 is too old to create content lol! I am so glad I came across your video, I just watched it and it has reassured me that I should carry on creating content! I think I was just doubting myself and feeling like maybe my content is not worth it, but you explained it quite well that is not the case! Thank you for this video once again! 😁
this is all very sound advice and I'm glad I sat down for this. I think I had these concepts in somewhere in my mind, but it's great to hear it put to words by someone with the expertise. I think I'll start my first video essay script tonight 🙌🏾
You can use ChatGPT to help with scripts...
I have enjoyed your content for years! Thank you.
Great video! As an older content creator, it’s nice to know I’m going in the right direction. Keep up the great work!
Love it!! I’ve been and feel self aware here and there, and yet I myself have found many thriving channels in various niches ran and hosted by women in their mid 60 and above. These ladies have audiences and channels I aspire to have one day. Heck, my favorite among them is a gaming girl in her 70s!
Thanks! The real key is playing for the long game and being honest about what you want to be doing later on
Another great information video. Thanks Roberto
just turned 31 and I've also finally decided to try making videos this year. This vid is excellent, thanks dude 👍🏾
Great video Roberto....Love hearing the benefits of being an older Content Creator.... I'm going to be 53 this year.... I took UA-cam more seriously when I was about 50.... wisdom, experience and I have much more time now.
Love the new background ❤ great video
Great video Roberto!
Excellent advice Roberto. To thine own sellf be true. Keep doing an awesome job!! 👌
37 here, started almost a year ago for something to busy my mind with. Enjoy watching these videos and trying out relevant tips and things. I've improved at a lot of things/the process and look forward to improving much more. My channel is educational. Full time job and kids limits the time I can put in but happy with my progress so far 🙂
Love your channel man. You've taught me alot.
I just got your book and I’m about to start reading it and I’m so excited😁
More refreshing truths, Roberto. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. Definitely inspiring and helped my mindset.
Superb video as always Rob
The thumbnail is hilarious. Thank you for this video. I started my channel at 52 years old late Oct 2022. I look much younger than my age but I still may be wasting my time lol. I’m having fun though. Who knows, maybe it will go somewhere.
Brilliant advice. Much appreciated, Roberto. Would love to see more examples of channels by the 50+ crowd when possible.
I started my UA-cam channel at age 61 as something to keep me busy in my retirement. I'm not going to change the world, but I am providing a service to older folks like me who are an unserviced audience. Progress is slow but steady and that is totally ok by me. Thanks for the video.
It’s never too late to start, and it’s so much fun to make stuff for others to enjoy or learn from. Even as a tiny channel, this has been one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things I’ve done in years!
Literally was just on your channel looking for something to watch. Over 30 here 👋 thank you for the words of encouragement!
Welcome back Roberto! Great video, bringing the realness as usual!
Appreciate it!
Going full steam in launching this year at 48, turning 49 soon, I’ll let you now in january 2024 how it went ;)
Great advice Roberto! I started my channel over a year ago as a hobby in my retirement. I have over 1200 subscribers! Who Knew? I think there's an audience for everyone on UA-cam. What I enjoy about it the most, is the creative process. If you'd have told me a few years ago that I'd be a content creator, with a studio set-up, shooting , editing, adding special effects, hair and make-up etc, etc, I would have said you're crazy....but here I am, learning SO much, making new connections and having FUN!! It's not about the money for me, just the challenge of making better and better content.
This is so good!!!
Great Advice again Roberto!!!
I'm going on 40 and want to start a successful channel mainly to prove to myself I have what it takes to do this as a stay at home parent. I spent the last 5 months exploring and learning what I'm just not good at or what doesn't work for me as a Wife & Mom with family schedules... I LOVE how you explain creator content goals in a calm but realistic manor! Thank You!! I'm taking notes for my new Channel that will make better sense for me and my schedule.
