    Thank you for your video explaining how this worked. My opener had exactly the same symptoms. I found the speed sensor and it appeared to be in its proper place, but as I was moving the chain up and down I noticed one of the plastic tabs had some crud on it. I cleaned off the tab and it began working perfectly again. THANKS!! You saved me a couple hundred dollars and a days work.

    I have an ancient Sears opener for which the RPM sensor part has been long obsolete. I mistakenly bought a very similar part (41C4398A) but it had a completely different mounting. HOWEVER, I noticed that the sensor component from the new part could be desoldered and resoldered to the old part. My old part had two discrete components --a infrared LED and an opposing optical transistor (receiver). The new part had these two combined into one black plastic housing. The solder hole pattern was the same on both! Just be sure to follow the correct orientation as printed on the board. There is a diode symbol on the part that is hard to see. Voila, I did it, and now I don't have to buy a whole new opener. Good try Sears.

    I have a weird version of this problem: using remote...door opens a foot, stops. One more press, door goes back down then resumes opening fully. All remotes act the same. Use the wired wall mounted opener... and everything works fine. I'd love to believe the RPM sensor would be the easy fix, but that doesn't explain why it works perfectly when using the wired opener. I've got a similar problem with my Craftsman 1/2 hp opener. Sensors are cleaned and aligned and led's solid, but when I go to close the door it will travel about a foot, sometimes farther, but as it gets closer to the bottom, it just stops early. If hold the button, it will still only pulse down. If I hold it still doesn't go down like as if there were something blocking the sensors. Is this a common problem with the RPM sensor also, or something similar to another common problem? Thanks in advance!

    • @GarageDoorGuidance
      @GarageDoorGuidance  2 роки тому

      Hey JP
      This sounds like it could be more of a force thing ? If you release the door you can grab the opener arm and act as if your the opener. ( you’ll need a ladder probably ) push the door down by hand by pushing the arm and you should be able to feel if there’s any resistance at any point. Have you checked power levels also ? ( blue knobs on back of unit )
      With a bad RPM sensor it typically stays in one spot and won’t go “further down” as you mentioned

      On a chain glide I would guess the force more likely? Try to adjust the knobs on

      @@GarageDoorGuidance Mine is an older unit and it does the same thing. It moves about 12 inches and it just stops. Then pushing the button again causes it to come back. However, it does it even if the trolley is released and the door is uncoupled from the opener. There is nothing wrong with the door anyway. I think different openers are designed to react differently when they hit an obstruction. Some just stop while others auto-reverse. I think the problem with mine is just the RPM sensor. If it isn't working right the electronics in the opener thinks the door is stuck even if it isn't. One other UA-camr was having the same problem and he posted a video showing that a misalignment of the little collar under the interrupter wheel is what causes the RPM sensor not to work correctly. He loosened the set screw on the collar, pushed the motor shaft backwards, pushed the interrupter forward and re-tightened the set screw. Once he did that the problem went away. The misalignment of the collar causes the interrupter to get too far away from the sensor so it doesn't interrupt the light beam anymore. That's what stops the motor.
