No it's called using the system for what its actually used for. It was originally used for youtube's suggestions. If you disliked videos then the suggested videos should avoid any of the type.
And this is why Linus is awesome. He's not afraid to rant and give people a piece of his mind when a product genuinely sucks donkey balls. I'm sure he wouldn't be AS harsh on his sponsors and more careful with his wording, but he's still better than those that give 10/10 on all sponsor products...
Actually I say whatever I want about a sponsor product if I make a video about it. The key difference is look who my sponsors are! Intel, Corsair, ADATA, AMD, etc... They don't make junk... lol.
Agreed

2015: nah
2016: nope
2017: not yet
2018: not quite yet
2019: LETS RECOMMEND THIS
2020: LETS DO IT AGAIN
Right?
You're not alone.
Same
Why does it recommend stuff to melater than everyone? Even this message is a week old. These old videos are actually better than the new ones lol
Just realised how old this is. UA-cam you don't make any sense sometimes.
In 2015, I actually bought the reactor, hydrolyser, and 10 hydrocores from Think Geek as part of a planned survival kit. My rationale was like any who thought the reactor might offer promising utility during times of hardship, or for camping.
Unfortunately, I was quite dismayed when the output power failed to meet expectations over a year later when I first tried using it. The charge time for each hydrocore cell was between 1-2 hours IIRC. On the positive side, it does seem the charger was dynamic and didn't rely on just a timer for charging- when I would reinsert a freshly charged hydrocore, it would read as charged shortly thereafter.
Tragically, the Brunton Reactor system's sole attractive feature, that of having a highly compressed portable energy source ideal for long-term storage, is completely undermined by other existing technologies as Li power packs and simple alkaline batteries. Based on the reactor's interaction with my portable electronics, it does offer valid charging voltages, but at too low a current even in the high power setting; it was years ago when I tested this and I did not write down the readings I took with my multimeter. For the test, I had put my smartphone in airplane mode and set the screen to stay on at minimum brightness... and the battery indicator actually continued to go down even under near ideal charging circumstances; I even tried low power mode for the phone. The phone simply used more power than a hydrocore could replenish. I did try charging the phone completely powered off with a fresh hydrocore, however it charged less than 10% of the battery's total capacity and took more than an hour to do so; perhaps with a flip phone's smaller battery the reactor might barely scrape by. In closing, I think the Brunton Reactor is a great concept, but fails to include technical documentation of the reactor's capabilities or offer charging that may be considered useful for the average person. In my opinion, it should have been marketed to universities as a teaching aid, rather than a dependable consumer product.
1x Reactor $99.99
1x Hydrolyser $199.99
10x Hydrocores $99.90
----------------------------
$399.88 (not including the ~$30 shipping costs)
TLDR: Great concept, attractive novelty, but inefficient mechanism of action. More affordable solutions exist which far outperform it. Packaging contains suspiciously vague marketing claims. Requires hydrocores be charged with AC power rather than solar/green methods, further eroding any true usefulness.
This is more interesting from an alternative power enthusiast and science perspective viewpoint. It’s a neat device and adapted properly can see limited not as practical but enthusiast use for this type of technology for low power things like trickle charging and low current LED lights while doing further research and refinement in miniaturizing H fuel cell technology. Companies taking a not ready concept and overadvertising its capabilities in what was literally a cash grab scam does more irreparable damage than just few angry customers in that they harm the cause and reputation and public perception of experimental, emission friendly, and renewable energy sources.
This is fraud and there should’ve been sever criminal prosecutions for this.
"1 HYDROSTIK = 10 disposable AA batteries"
The graphics shows 12 batteries.
*Wow.*
12 5/6 batteries.
Willing to bet they were trying to show off their understanding of a basic mathematical concept.
their website designers must have short term memory loss and aren't sure how many AA batteries a hydrostik is
Not to mention "1A" no "2A" no.... we don't know what the damn output is. Wish Linus put more of a test to it. check voltage and current with a dummy load.
nictheperson the grey part that looks like it is empty is actually just showing how battries are stylized. Look at the picture of the Hydrocore next to it, it is two-tone with a color division in approximately the same place. It's not 5/6th batteries, they are just idiots.
As evidence, the same exact model appears in the Text that claims 14 batteries @ 3:55
Note to self... Don't piss off Linus... :P
+Barnacules Nerdgasm lol, I'd be the same, selling snake oil as a solution to an easier all ready existing solution.
+Barnacules Nerdgasm I've ran into many things with conflicting info when it comes to batteries and charge times... I was just as frustrated.
+Barnacules Nerdgasm Hahah +1 brother
hiiiiii. I love when two people I subscribe to collide...
+Barnacules Nerdgasm Note to companies: Don't put out misleading products that do not work and are attempting to charge consumers $500 for two would be rechargeable batteries. SHAME ON YOU BRUNTON. SHAME!
I go back to this video often, just to see Linus rip it to shreds.
Spiff_M did someone say "V Shreds"
Its a microfusion cell
You can bring a freaking hydrogen reactor and "hydrcores" but I cant bring a bottle of water. Thanks TSA :D
I mean, just bring a dead phone and drink the water this thing produces while running. Boom! Problem solved. >XD
There prob less than 3.14 oz
@@babybirdhome Sure, you won't be thirsty, but you're still going to have a dead phone, since this thing doesn't seem to be able to do anything besides add humidity to the air.
To be fair, it's not actually creating real fusion, it's just combining oxygen and hydrogen which releases electricity
People drown in water all the time. When was the last time someone died from a "hydrocore"?
I really hope Brunton sees this
really hope they bankrupt with that customer support and GREED
Indeed! They really should value more what customer support is.
They probably did. did you not notice the 3 dislikes (as of this writing)
IdealIdeas100 It must be them! Anyone who would dislike this is as bad as the product.
Who thought 6 years ago we'll watch this while quarantined in a pandemic
I did

Ah. They forgot to mention you have to buy the flux capacitor model to make use of the hydrogen reactor.

+Michael Molter What do we do to get his attention??
+lordme88 Send him one.
I sure as heck hope so. Can't wait for the next video: Hydrogen reactor BULLSHIT!
The Hydrogen Reactor is *less efficient than a battery pack, and as such it produces more waste...* Let me put it like this, basically if you needed to charge a 30,000mah power bank and it's 93% efficient that means when you plug it into a wall you'll use about 32100mah power charging it... The rest will be lost to heat...
Well lets say this device has also a 30,000mah Hydro Stick whatever... The charging station uses Hydrolysis to make the hydrogen gas, well here is a cold dose of reality... Hydrolysis is only between 40-60% efficient... So even If I round it out to 50% that means you'll use 60,000mah to charge a 30,000mah stick. You're using almost double the power to charge one of these sticks than if you just charge your battery pack...
Thereby you are creating double the pollution too... And that 50% efficiency doesn't even cover the charging station's compressor, or the conversion back into electrical energy in the reactor itself... I'd say this thing probably only has about 40-35% efficiency or even less compared to a battery pack's 90ish%...
Sure you could use a solar cell and not generate any waste while charging it... But then again you could use that same solar cell on your battery pack so why bother? The only possible benefit I can see with this product is not using lithium... But compared to all of it's downfalls, that is way too little to even make me consider buying something like this.
That's why everything is messed up on their sites, all of this is just made up smoke and mirrors. If they listed any real specifications no one would ever buy it as it would be clear how horrendous the product is...
You're right, this is pretty much a toy just to say you have electricity coming from water, I dare say it will pick up a few sales from people previously unaware of, and newly frightened of lithium-whatever batteries and their corrosive and explosive power when angered.
Myself, I think the concept is very cool but I routinely use bare lithium polymer batteries - the angriest and most unstable common-use batteries - in my airsoft weapons and recharge those with a decent smart charger. I'll be sticking to those as they are the most efficient tool for the job, and just require a bit of safety.
Yes I also agree the concept is a cool idea but just not practical at all.
don't forget the "hidden costs" like the fact that i probably wont run on tap water which means you have to use distilled water which you have to buy or if it uses tap water I'm pretty sure there has to be a filter somewhere. and filter as we all know are consumables.
also the "green" is just pure marketing like any power bank its as green as the electricity it comes from.
in the end i'm pretty sure its much much worse than lithium maybe not from a safety perspective but form an environmental perspective....
You are correct about the efficiency difference. However, considering that a smartphone consumes less than 1 cent's worth of electricity in a year (seriously, not being hyperbolic here), the environmental effect of charging efficiency is negligible. The material consumption is a much greater concern.
I always love when Linus gives a brutally honest review. Unlike most channels that call every and any product the best
Especially a brand like brunton which is an overpriced luxury fashion brand. Their compasses are great but not for the price they charge. You definitely don’t get what you pay for and most people that buy them don’t actually use them. It just sits on rich peoples tables.

yep Linus butt******* them good. He gave them a chance though to replace their "defective" unit but they chose to ignore him.
Hehehe "defective", I get your sarcasm, not like they have a good product to begin with, kinda reminds me of solar highway, the one that does nothing but flashing LED light and cost tens of thousands dollars each, when you can put a Solar Cell on the roof for $100-$200 and produce real electricity, or light 20 times more LED.

Nice job, Brunton. I bet this is the first result when someone searches "Brunton hydrogen reactor review"
1:03 "This HIGH-SCIENCE device...." LMAO
cyancoyote and thats consider to be fucking bait
they probably didn't send a replacement unit because it wasn't going to fare any better. Their product is utter trash and they know it.
Absolutely, that is the way I read it too.
IF they were to send him another that would simply underline they don't really work as claimed (although even finding non conflicting claims seems a "challenge"). As it is at least there is a chance someone may assume this unlit is defective, and maybe try one. I doubt it, but I suppose there is a slight chance.
And sending another one wouldn't have made the slightest difference, I shouldn't wonder.
simple answer is they already made the money they needed to off him they knew sending placement only meant eating more of the profit they made so way bother when the review is never gonna change based on the current tread of review they have i just check and over 78% of reviews off site are negtive about the product with over 50% telling people to stay away from the product with to saying they taken the company to court for not honor cash refund
Another smart person who knows right here I liked your post 👍
You can get 10000mah power bank from oneplus for around $20...
Riux Or that :D never heard though, gotta check it out.
+Jupezzi i bought a 12000 one for 12$
Mr_Lolled That's a quite nice deal :D
+Jupezzi yeah, but with good quality? Some powerbanks use really shitty batteries and/or lie about their capacity, especially the cheap ones tend to do this.
Karl Ramstedt with great quality. just check the oneplus one if you already haven't. it's one beauty with even more beutiful specs and performance overall.
that company just went out of business lol
Was just thinking the same thing haha
I love how you try to give the company a chance to redeem themselves
Fuel cells really only make sense in large devices - like vehicles. But for moving a vehicle, you may as well just burn the hydrogen in a combustion engine instead. Just as environmentally friendly, and not going to be too different in efficiency.
tin2001 at the very least the pollution is concentrated to one area, rather than being blown out of every car on every road everywhere...
GhostShipSupreme mate if you use hydrogen as fuel your exhaust gas would be pure water vapour and that shit is not counted as pollution as far as I'm aware of
Water vapor is a green house gas. So yes. It is a pollutant
However, if you manage to capture the water in a tank it would make good drinking water.
I believe that is what they do in space. Use fuel cells to make energy, and use the water by product for drinking
James Reynolds sounds pretty good actually. Would be a pain to empty every so often but that's a small price to pay for not dieing Interstellar style
ugh there is a twang in the mic.....

Am I the only one getting weird buzzing noises on LTT and TQ videos?
I hear that too, but i tought it was the charger :D

this seems to be one of those cool things on the surface that id love to have...thank you for all of this information
one use i can see could be if it was used to make flashlights, that could work if they could get a nice cree led based design that could be handy ...if they came out with a charge station that ran off solar or water or something....
the techs been held back so long.... hopefully somebody makes this tech useful at some point....
Great review/rant. It's why I enjoy watching your videos because your not afraid to tell it like it is. You're one of my go to people when looking at getting a new gadget/electronic.
One thing though, you may want to check out the cable or microphone that you're using. Weird fuzzy sound (most likely from a cable) throughout the entire video.
I guess this is why I have never heard of it before.
I can see it having some industrial use in the future for research expeditions where budget is not the concern but it would need some major improvements to the output and probably that rugged casing..
You won't be carrying 2 cells but probably over 20 for a long term stay and probably at least 2 charging stations or more in case one brakes down...
Atm it's not all that great though...
All we need is all here already most haven't discovered it but nature doesn't need to be raped and we don't have to live from the land we need to learn to live with it not off it. Look at what this trash does to your health and our inviorment. It's garbage u will one day discover this
Linus you need to do a revisit on this one and see what is up with the new stuff that it compares to. Keep it up love the content.
Protip: When you contact customer support and spoke to the supervisor/manager that promise a replacement but never receive anything in a long period of time (even after recalling them repeatedly without any answers), it is safely assume that the company and the product is BS and you will never see a replacement, ever. Now that you have made a review the product as avoid, you will get the attention of the company and they will do some crazy stuff. Be on guard!
define crazy stuff, what could they possibly do...?
Boris Andrejevic sure google will be happy to delete channel with almost 700 000 subscribers cause they don't make any money on that.... sure :D
Boris Andrejevic Only that they legally have no right to do that.
ICCPR, article 19: "Everyone shall have the right to hold opinions without interference","everyone shall have the right to freedom of expression; this right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any other media of his choice".
Provided he included all he needed to prove his point in the video they might as well shove a rubber duck up their arses and start flying.
One word: Lawsuit. Even if the company don't have a strong case to begin with, those crazy companies will still try to sue your pants off. lol
Oyamada13 Except he lives in Canada. Wouldn't happen, ever.
We don't have the same laws as the USA does.
Wow. How is this product allowed to be sold in your country? They'd have the pants sued off them in the EU.
I know it's unlikely but I'd like to see an update on this product I'm hoping in the 7 years it's been around that some upgrades and improvements have been made but can't seem to find any updated reviews
I had a Brunton SolarRoll solar panel waaaay back in 2003 for about $300. It rolled up like a towel and fit it on my backpack for deployments. It came with super wishy-washy hype surrounding it's ability to charge a laptop. It also only did the job some of the time, with compatibility issues and alot of frustration. But for it's time, it was ahead of it's time. I still have it, and use it as a trickle charger for my cars in winter. It just sits on the dash and makes sure the car battery is never dead
Today, I use a cheap $100 retail Goal Zero 15w panel with a $35 power bank that is carribeaner attached to my little backpack while out and about, and it does a pretty solid job of making sure I never have a dead phone, vape, any other headaches, and never gets plugged in. I just put my bag down facing a window with sunlight and let it trickle in more power to the bank. My GF steals it all the time and it sits on the side of her purse. Tech just needs time to refine. Brunton is shady (pardon the Solar pun) but they do tend to try things before everyone else gets it right
Thank you for not being afraid to thrash a bad product. That's important for the viewers (and me). Now go and review some sound cards please.
So in other words, do not buy this product.

this was the first ever vid off ltt i ever saw. coming back and seein it was posted 8 years ago is wild.
no way this video was 5 years ago, jesus its been a while hasnt it
one of the funniest linustech videos I have seen
how is it green if you need to recharge the fuel cells with electricity?
No battery acid to recycle after the product have been used. But, since it doesnt work, it isnt green.
oh yeah didn't think about that. well its still a terrible idea when rechargeable battery exist.
he191254 Not recycling battery acid doesn't make it green. Where did the energy come from to manufacture it? Where does the energy come from to produce the hydrogen?
Hydro plant form where I'm from. It's marginally cleaner, thats the point.
That doesn't change the fact that the device in and of itself isn't green. You could charge batteries with hydro power and call that "green". Actually it would be more green because its much more efficient.
I watched this the day it came out , Linus changed so much.
That intro talk though. Really dug deep into the manufacturer lol
whoa i've never seen linus so passive agressive before
Bit late to the party on this one as I only saw it for the first time in a store today. Though my own research came to similar conclusions as this video. All in all it is a tech in it's infancy that some companies are trying to cash in on with lot's of fancy terms to draw folks in with. I'm glad you did a direct comparison with power packs on weight/output etc, but you did forget one final thing that for me really puts the nail in this products coffin.
Even if you go ahead and spend the $400 needed for a full reactor and recharging station, you still need power to make the station work. The most likely option will be a home desk mount where you charge your cells before going away and then charge them upon returning home, this sounds wonderful until folks understand one minor fact. A battery pack operates in exactly the same way, I plug it into my pc the night before a trip to charge, and then do the same to again charge it when I get home. So this hydrogen method still requires the same if not more electricity from a mains/battery supply as the battery pack method, in no way is it any greener than the cheaper/lighter/smaller/more powerful alternative we already have.
Ty, for the fast intro! :)
Hey, It's been more than 2 years since this video came out! Will there be an update to the product? I mean, it should have got better/more efficient, cheaper and easier to find, right?
3 years now and still not yet, look at amazon and reviews of the latest one :(
Sounds like a disastrous product.
somekind of new Hydrogen Bomb in miniature size. it looks a bit hazardous. :) :)
could you test it with multimeter, what current it really can it deliver?
Thanks for review was going to get one but after your review will steer clear. Thought you just had to fill it with water for it to recharge
As someone who is accustomed to Linus' newer videos, hearing him say "speaking of pricing" sent me into fight or flight mode
Fuel cell technology is still too young to have the performance Brunton claims for that price. Remember the Honda FCX Clarity? It was powered by a proton exchange fuel cell reactor and a big hydrogen tank. These type of rector is the only one that can be applied in this use scenario, but the problem with these is that they have parts made of platinum, and last time I checked platinum is worth about $1000USD an ounce. Obviously, a $150 reactor won't have much platinum in it, so we cannot expect it to perform adequately. There won't be any good portable fuel cell until there is a breakthrough in this technology which doesn't require platinum or operating temperatures of over 300ºF.
+ElZamo92
I'm assuming the problem with this is due to the hydrogen storage rather than the cell itself. The cell is probably completely capable of achieving almost the 2 amps claimed, except that the canister simply isn't able to provide hydrogen quickly enough. Practical applications of metal hydride hydrogen storage generally involve heating the container to a high temperature to force the hydrogen out.
You might get better results with the Brunton on a hot day, but even then it'll probably struggle to release enough hydrogen to reach the full capacity of the fuel cell itself.
I thought it was a mobile hydrogen fusion reactor.. Got me excited for a while..
***** Not only that but you, and all you friends watching the spectacle would probably die from radiation poisoning.
Time for another review of this product line!

Thanks for reviewing this. Sorry to hear about the experience with Brunton...interesting technology that clearly needs some more refining before it is ready for prime time, well and maybe from a different company.
For the price of that thing with the charger I can buy a generator.
"It's green"
How much power goes into electrolysis compared to just charging a battery bank?
LinusTechRants :D
Heh.. you tore them apart. But I see why you did. Woulda been awesome though if it lived up to the hype.
Hi Linus, I actually own the Brunton Impel (the larger one). I have found that it is an exceptionally good device for camping and outdoor activities in general. I actually use it for work when I travel to remote sites to power my Panasonic tablet and Toughbook (also my iPhone because it can't hold a charge to save its life).
I am surprised Brunton put out a lack luster product such as this, but I can assure you that the impel is actually a very good product from field use.
Very interesting. I do think it is important to note that Brunton is best known for their compasses, particularly their geological compasses. They have been branching out into other areas to accommodate outdoor tech, but their focus is still with the compasses. That said, Brunton appears to have stopped selling these items. I personally have never had a problem with the people at Brunton, but I have never purchased tech like this from them.
The military is working on a power pack using a microturbine and regular petroleum fuel.
i bought a 14000mAh battery that charges my phone 8 times, has 2 usb ports [1A and 2A] and only cost $42 so... yeah
love your videos guys, keep it up
yes exactly what i wanted a video about a product made 5 years ago thank you youtube i see why you recommended this
anyone else getting some weird static-y noise periodically in this video?
+David Price (Pollodelfuego) I hear it too. Thought it was my headset.
okay. I thought my speakers were starting to bug out haha
+David Price (Pollodelfuego) i thought it was from the product itself.
I think it was probably just the mic or something. haha
If it worked I would buy it even for that crazy price JUST to encourage the development of it. Unfortunately it doesnt friggin work and its outrageous that you don't sue them for false advertisement.
Thanks for the vid, will be buying to convert into reactor for time machine.
Having first watched a LTT video in 2021 searching reviews for a new build, this was the first time I heard a different intro. And oh my god his voice used to be even higher.
i have a better idea. a diesel pick up truck with a 572 supercharged hemi in the bed with the crank hooked up to a turbine to charge ur phone :)
Sounds very convenient :P
giocogames it is convinient because you can drive it.
*****
you'll be my assistant designer and we'll patent it. you come up with the name
ابو لولوة النقي Or hook up an alternator to the crank pulley with a belt and use that to charge the phone... wait a minute...

damn, i didnt know electricity was that complicated..... i guess i need an eletrical engineer to help me....
Fast forward 2 years later, did you ever get any reply from the manufacturer?
Charles Baldwin III 4 years
@Linus anything?
@@gamingstreams4703 5 Years later
Nope, well over 5 years later.
6 years
When you think:
Yaaaay new intro!
And then realize that the video is 3 years old....
So one logical problem I have with this. If you are splitting water and then resynthesizing it, you are using more electricity than you would to just charge the phone. It takes more energy to create hydrogen gas than synthesizing water produces...
If you ever get a replacement please do a revisit. I am curious to know how if those are the actual stats.
It's not even green, mate. I guess you haven't measured it, but charging these things takes way more energy than they can output. Hydrogen could be useful in cars because refueling doesn't take as long as charging batteries, but for everything else it's basically not the best choice.
Hey Linus. It will smell like that all the time. We build one like this. We noticed we had issues with the apple products(we figured it was issue with the method the charge was starting current and voltage).
I am open to discussing the issues.
Watched the intro, and I was like “DUDE that’s not the usual. What year is this? Oh.”
Thumbs up for a great honest review!
