I have had 996.1 for almost 10 years now. When I got it I was already very very very informed about 911 intricacies. My initial target and budget was for 964 or 993. However, being almost 2 m tall I just could not fit in and can not get a good seating in an air-cooled. And then I came across this 996.1 and it was about half the price. And although I knew a lot I was still a bit fortunate as this car was a RoW1998 (basically equal to US1999). And this has turned out to be the most reliable year model for a couple of reasons: It still has the better double row IMSB but also it still has the better piston coating. It is also the last to have cable throttle though I dont see it better that the e-throttle but I have the option model with LSD/TC/ASR which was only ever offered to RoW1998 cable. Also the cooling system of the M96/01/03 was dimensioned for the 3.4 and they had to make a compromise with they 3.6. The did enhance the cooling channel air flow but the thermostat arrangement is not the best and it negated that gain. It is good idea to swap for the cooler tstat even with the 3.4.
The things a find “annoying” in the 996 is the rather poor gear linkage, the double mass flywheel and way too long gearing at gears 2-5. The 6th is ok for cruise though I dont need 280 km/h top speed. I’d rather have a car where I can play more with gears. Going to a B-road you can usually almost do it in one gear, you just pick up the spirit level/rpm range.
Also the e-seats are not optimum for someone as tall as I am. The e-seats sit about 3 cm higher than manual seat and I can not fit in the car with a helmet. The seat form is excellent for longer tours but for highly spirited route I’d prefer more side support for my body. Btw. I also have a 65 mm extension to the steering column to get the steering wheel closer to where it needs to be.
One thing that annoyed me but I think it seems to be in control now. The rear tyre wear. I had -1.9 deg camber at rear and I wore my rears quite quickly 6000-18 000 km depending the tyre brand. Always inside corners to carcass. Michelins last longest, Conti SC2 was the absolute worst. I took the camber down to -0.9 and it seems wear the rear more evenly and not only the inside shoulders. I can’t feel difference at the speeds I do. Probably on the track I would.
The next annoyance is the key. I know this is a common problem: renewing a key is quite a task. The chip in the key dies sooner or later and then it is just a physical key. Porsche has CHOSEN to make it difficult to renew the key and it is way too expensive relative to the value of the car.
What else? When you go to forums you see alot of people putting the 996 down. I bet 80% of them have never had a 911 let alone 996.
    What about the good points?
I think this car is the probably best purchase I have ever made. It has bought me more joy than probably anything else in my life. It is really a battery charger for me. When I head up for a B-road I can forget everything. And I have gone out for a 250 km loop only to do a 500 km loop and when I have parked int garage I’ve thought should I go for another 100 km. And I have felt so refreshed. Everytime I drive it I feel blessed and filled with deep gratitude. It is kinda like a space shuttle. It takes me away from this world to a better place. And sometimes I think if I could have any 911, any car, could it give more? Another 911 could give me the same but not really more. The only car that I believe could perhaps do it is the Alpine A110- but the margin would be insignificant. I can tell that a 991.2 GT3 RS does not give the same pleasure on a B-road although it is a much more developed car. And I also know my dream 911, the 996 GT3 RS does not improve the B-road experience. On a race track my car would loose hands down to both, but not on a B-road. And that is my county. And I would claim that owning an air cooled is a better ownin experience but not as good driving experience. The 996 is much more forgiving car, like all the modern 911s are compared to the air cooled, even 993.
I recently drove a 781 GTS. It is a more capable car but I was surprised how the steering feel was a lot worse than in my car. I would not call it even good. It was way too light, way too bouncy. It did not pass inferomation very well. And I also think that the 996/997 steering feel is better than the much appraised ar cooled steering feel - which is definitely very good but a bit bouncy.
Though, to be honest, I would not recommend a 996 to someone who does not know his way about cars. If you want a maintenance free car go for a Toyota. Sports cars need love.

The only thing I hate about my 996 is wondering when my $30K Porsche will demand a $30K engine rebuild... otherwise I love the thing to death.

    1: UnPlug 🔌 the seat 💺 motor.
2: Move the steering button shifter down to the shifter with race car 🏎 parts.
3: install the drink 🍸 cooler in the rear seat that normally does nothing.

My Porsche Boxster 986 also did not come with a cupholder however there is a solution for it! There are aftermarket cupholders that fit into the armrest, I bought one and they work fine! I recommend it!

Randomly stumbled across your channel. Love your energy, love the car, keep doing what you love and I hope you’re able to make a living doing this UA-cam thing, or find your career through the connections you’re making just enjoying your life and contributing to car culture.

Early 996s had `oem clip in cupholders that fit into little holes in the left & right air vent, but seems like your car doesn't have the mounting holes. Probably it is a later model. You might just swap the air vent surround and get the OEM cupholders

Hi Noah wow 5 things that's more than expected lol... So check out messages for my idea to sort that seat thing .... Also I think that gear lever should manually change up & down so maybe get that looked at ... Mph should be around 20mpg even for a tiptronic unless it's C4 then 18-19mpg ... manual C2 are 21-24 mpg you can get better but ofcourse that's no fun 😂.... The cup holder thing is everyone's 996 problem but loads of aftermarket options...bottom of the seat , in the armrest and on the dash ... 😎👌 I'm so glad you and this car met ... Your helping the 996 community get even more love 💕💕💕

Man coming up with any list was hard 😂 there’s really
nothing horrible about this car! It’s a C4 so that makes sense why it’s closer to 18-19 mpg. And thanks for the tips on the seat i’m gonna try it this weekend, i made this video before i saw the response. Thank you again, i am too so glad i met this car

I bought an aftermarket cup holder for my 996. It slides between the center console and the passenger seat. Work great, was inexpensive and doesn't impede on the passenger.
