I own a 996 Turbo and I can't agree with you more about the organic and analog feel over other Porsche's and the 996 did in fact save the company. Also, people love this car and when snobs talk about the headlights I point to the GT 1 and they are immediately quiet with nowhere to go. In all factually, the headlights on a 996 to me, is beautiful and I much prefer them because they are more arrow dynamic and they are different and is going to be a rarity. I have a 996 C4 Cab X51. I have a client with a 991 Targa 4S that I've driven a few times. The 991 is a fantastic car but I enjoy driving my 996, and in fact, enjoyed my 986S I had before it more. They're all wonderful cars to drive, but I feel more connected to the 986/996 when behind the wheel compared to the newer cars

Nice! Thanks for the comment and glad to hear it! To be honest one of the things that really put me off about the PDK in the 997 is how abrupt the downshifts were when coming to a stop. I suspect the Tiptronic is much better in this regard (though I admittedly have never driven one). Appreciate the feedback!
@@FlawlessActivity I haven't had the opportunity to drive the newer PDK's but the early Tiptronics are a tad slow but still fun and I've never had to deal will clutch replacements or leaky main seals.Godsend in traffic situations and my Porsche mechanic said he's never seen an IMS go bad in a Tiptronic equipped 996👍🙏
I got the exact car almost 6 years ago for my retirement gift to myself . Love the ride! Just modern enough, and the rear end look is awesome. Yes, the sweet spot 911. Now has 137,000 miles, and it’s still running strong. Got to keep it up. Going to have to replace some wear and tear items, but nothing to break the bank. 👊🏼
Thank you for the comment and support! Really appreciate it. Definitely love atlas gray, and find myself forgetting it's gray sometimes and thinking it's blue. It is incredible, and tricky like that.🍻
Thank you! Yes, the exhaust is stock, but I believe it is the sports exhaust. It sounds great, and is noticeably more audible in the 4-5k range than my previous C2 996 that I believe had a standard exhaust. Both 996s definitely sound more raw than my 997 ever did!
Great CAR and good explanation of why these cars are so good and underappreciated!! I was lucky enough to find a 996 Turbo in 2019 for $32k --- in pristine condition!! The shop that had it for sale didn't have a clue to what they actually had :) ....it had full Porche service the previous month, GT2 body kit, Bilstein coil-overs, aftermarket wheels, carbon fiber wing & sill plates, $5k custom stereo system, & full car radar detector and jammer (front and back). If anyone has 996 Turbo, you have to hit up Marski tuning -- stage 2 tune + exhaust turns these cars into a completely different monster :)
I get compliments on my 996 all the time. It's got the same color with bronze wheels with an aero kit with aftermarket exhaust. It sounds and looks gorgeous!!
Your car sounds beautiful! It's too bad UA-cam comments don't let you share pictures. I'd love to see what it looks like! Appreciate the comment and support! Enjoy your 996 in good health!🙏🍻

Thanks my man! OMG, the first car video game I ever played was on a computer before Windows even existed, and I remember picking the 911 Turbo I could get further in game than with any other car. Got me interested in them at a very young age! Totally forgot about that until I read your comment! Appreciate it!
14:33 “Porsche modernized the design” this is EXACTLY what I’ve been telling people. Porsche was going with their mantra and people weren’t ready for it. Nice video! Are you in the LA area?
What a very nice car , thanks for your objective comment , I totally agree with You about the quality of these cars! I have a gen.1 996 convertible 2000 model stick shifter in Vesuvio , and I Love it to pieces!!
My experience exactly. After owning several 996 and 997 coupes, the 996 driving experience > 997. They just feel more direct. PASM, variable steering take away from the 997 feel. You got a great deal on your C4S. I bought a C4S coupe about 5 years ago for the same price but it had about 120k. It was such a solid car., wish I kept it.
Thanks for the comment and support! Really appreciate the personal insight. Sorry to hear you let it get away, but from your comment, I take it you likely have other toys that are currently putting a smile on your face.🍻
Good video, well spoken, I have c2 996 1999 cab, love it as well...sure the c4 is a nice step up though. I'll be checking out your previous stuff as well now....Cheers
Thank you! I will say, the c4 is different, and it definitely has its pros, but I absolutely loved driving my c2, and the weight savings and lack of front drive has it slightly ahead in the handling department, IMO. Really can't go wrong with either!🍻
Thank you! What a great video. I'm glad I found it I just purchased a 2002 996 C2 Coupe an absolute almost perfect condition 6speed.... IMS was already done.. records out the ying yang I thought at the time I paid too much for it but I've not found anything like it for near the price I paid. I just went on a 1500 Mi Rally from Atlanta to West Virginia and the car was magical. I've owned many air-cooled 911 944s 928. This is absolutely my favorite car although I do love my 986s it's a close call between the two. Your video certainly solidifies my decision to purchase this car in the way I feel about it. And for the last thing what kind of exhaust is that? Because I've got to have one. I've already done the front splitter and am getting the Taco wing this week which will make mine Aero spec.. again great video I am sending it to a couple of my friends that are looking for 911 s..
My man! Huge thank you for the amazing comment and support! Much appreciated! Congrats on the car! 1,500 miles on it right away is fantastic! So glad you're enjoying it, and yes, people that don't appreciate the 996 tend to be people that have never actually driven a 996. But that's part of what makes them such incredible value for the money! As far as the exhaust, it's a stock sports exhaust that came available as an option on the 4s. Unfortunately I don't know much beyond that. It does sound great though! The modifications you have coming for yours sound pretty sweet! I've always liked the taco wing. Do continue to enjoy yours in good health!🙏🍻🤙
It's a head turner for sure! Just saw a super clean example at the local mall the other day and spent a minute really just admiring how great the car looks all around. Very underrated just because it doesn't quite fit the mold the way other generations have...

Having recently (one year) bought a '99 C4, I agree with your thoughts 100%. Something about the feel of the car that is hard to put ones finger on, but that is a car that I look forward to driving every time.
I enjpyed your breakdown of the 996 and how it does deserve more credit with respect to the overall cost per fun ratio. Well done and I will have one of my own this summer.

Love the point of view from a true engineer and gearhead. Any opinion on the Cabriolet compared to coupe? I had an E46 M3 coupe because the Cabriolet was an absolute dog in acceleration and handling in the cab version.
Thank you, appreciate it! I live in California, and I like to take tall passengers around. I've gone wine tasting in Napa with 4 adults in our cabriolet. For the use case it fits the bill perfectly. I do believe there is a penalty versus the coupe, but not as bad as with the E46 M3. The 911 cabriolets are still reasonably light. I will say probably rear wheel drive vs 4S and 996 vs 997S all have material differences, but I'm not trying to use this as a dedicated track car or anything, I've got the McLaren for that. They've all been great vehicle to own and enjoy. Best advice would be to try both out before you buy if you're curious and you think the difference might swing your decision.🙏🍻
Great stuff bro, ive been looking at a 2004 996 with 50k miles. He said the IMS bearing has been replaced not long ago but im still weary of the 50k odometer. What would you consider too high a mileage on a used 996? Either .1 or .2? Thank you and keep rockin!
Honestly, these cars can go 200k miles with no major issues outside of the risk of IMS failure. 50k miles wouldn't concern me at all if the IMS has been taken care of. That said, these cars are getting old, so the overall condition of the car is important. Has regular maintenance been done? Is it generally clean and well kept? Those are the things I would look for. Cars that look like they've been neglected usually end up costing more in the end, even if you pay less for them upfront. Good luck with your search!👊🤙
Your blessed, good karma, lucky!!! Feeling the same, except it's a boxster 2006, 2nd owner, well maintained and driving in sunny warm weather 24 7,HAWAII!!! since 2019!!! Oahu's westside, almost like the 'west like 'destiny song!!

I love this video, it is spot on and describes the fun and feeling of driving these. I love the hardback seats also, I had to have them in mine too! I have a 2000 Guards red c4 with the hardback matching seats and the bbs classic 2-piece rims. The analog feel and driving experience are amazing. I will also get some classics down the road! Thanks!
Thank you! Really appreciate the comment, and as a fellow owner I'm glad to hear it resonates! Your car sounds beautiful and the hard seatbacks are definitely a great touch on these cars. Enjoy your in good health!🙏🍻🤙
Thanks! Appreciate the comment and support! I have motorcycles that I was supposed to sell years ago, so I can relate to the sentiment. I love the exhaust noise as well, and my understanding is that it is factory, but it is a sports exhaust option, so standard in a sense, but they don't all sound like this. This definitely has more growl to it than my previous C2 996.🍻
I've been well and truly bitten by the 996 bug, and think I've found the one...an '01 4 Cab, 86K and very well sorted (known issues handled, very good maintenance history, clean as Kim Woodburn's kitchen (that British cleaning woman who had a TV show....deep cut lol.) One thing it has which surprised me at how much I liked it-or more accurately, how little an issue it was for me-Tiptronic. For use as a light daily (no commute but for most running around town things) in the utter misery that is Atlanta (or LA, I'm back and forth but mainly ATL now) traffic, leaving the rowing to the car is an upside that frankly doesn't come with the downside penalty during what the car's REALLY for, drives in the mountains and twisty foothills. I never would have imagined that to be the case, but it absolutely is. I'll save the resale hit at purchase so that should be a wash. As you put so well, there is something so charmingly analogue, so anti-2023, AI, CGI, tablet computer dash, you're so stupid you need your CAR to tell you not to drift into another lane etc etc...a car you drive, not the other way around. I like that it's from what feels now like a ridiculously innocent time (it wasn't, but compared to today...sadly yes.) And the Pinky Lai design is, simply put, an effing knockout. I look forward to joining the good ship 996-cheers! PS-killer hat!
Thank you! Really appreciate the comment and glad you found one that works for you! I completely agree about the benefits of not having to row your own gears in traffic, it's one of the reasons I tried out the PDK 997, and there's no question you'll save a pretty penny at purchase, so if it makes you happy all the better! Hope it works out and you enjoy your new ride in good health my friend!🍻
”I`ll drink to that”👍 Thanks for a great vid and you really have a gem of a car there, I love the spec🙌✨ I am living in Sweden and I have a smilar 2004 Atlas grey C4S coupe since 6 years. When I purchased it as my first Porsche I thought it may be a stepping stone Into other cars but it has really grown on me for all the reasons you mention in the video. Also it is so versitile; Tracy days, back roads, grand tours and I can even put the roof rack on and bring my MTB. Then the 996 4S looks continues to improve year by year (in my eyes), it is a keeper🤗
Thanks for the comment! You've got my coupe twin, so I know you know how amazing of a color Atlas Grey is in person! Yes, the 996 is a fantastic and versatile car. I envy your ability to use the roof rack, but I do enjoy the top down experience, so everything has trade-offs. Agree the 996 4S looks great, even if not quintessentially 911 by some people's eyes (though I stand by my take that it looks like a 'modern' 911). I definitely plan to keep mine indefinitely! Cheers and thanks for the support!🍻
@@FlawlessActivity Thanks for your reply🙏 I would also prefer a cab in sunny California☀️ The Atlas grey color is beautiful and rare. I read somewhere that it was a quite steep option at the time with a price of over €3000.

I can't even see a different colored one that looks like mine. anyone have any info on that model.
I have an artic silver with console and sport seats painted artic silver cabrio I think 996s are beautiful and in 10 years or so will be very valuable because of the different headlights I'm not a fan of 997 front enjoyed your video and agree with what you said
Nice to meet you! It's been so long that I don't really remember, and labor rates have probably gone up since then anyway. If you want a quote, you can ask for William at Bay Area Motor Works. I'm not sponsored in any way. I just think he does fantastic work, and I've taken all my German cars to him for years. 5 cars total, and he's always done right by me.
My mechanic who I mentioned in the video did the install on this car for me. I have done it myself on other cars in the past by running a wire behind interior panels to the fuse box and tapping into ignition switched power. Now there are a ton of hardwire kit options available. I know my mechanic used one, but not sure which, and not sure what he tapped into.
I agree, it’s not rational to say the 996 is not a pretty car or not a performer or grossly unreliable, etc. To me, if you like 911’s, they’re very much in-type in all respects. Great cars. They saved the company to boot.
Air cooled are cooler, more expensive, and generally more sought after, I get that because they are so cool, but I’ve got a 996 c2 cab, which is a phenomenal drive not a rust box , has the ability to terrify me and also drive sedately, give it 20yrs when all the air cooled will be rusted away or in the £millions then my 996 is the wisest buy 👍
These are no longer "inexpensive", prices have jumped quite a lot over the last couple years. A few years back, you could buy a good example well under $20k (especially in Cali) and an expensive one was mid 20's....not a chance anymore. Low mileage models, C4S's etc are now selling well over $40k. You certainly got a good price for a well sorted C4s when you bought it.
Love it! You can't see the headlights behind the steering wheel! I don't even think they look bad, just different. Thanks for the comment and support! Appreciate it!🍻
Great Video! I totally agree after 3 years with my C2 996.2 Cab. 90k ims failure is not so true. Too many owners worried way to much worried about IMS. Just dont garage queen it, change oil every 2000 miles and keep it busy and shouldn't be part of the 5% failure. I have almost 300000 miles original IMS all good and enjoy:)
A 997.1 would be a good compromise between the 996 and the 997.2 you had. The 997.2 DFI engine is definitely more anodine and characterless than the M97 engine, so the 997.1 has nice character, but you also get the better fit and finish than the 996. That's my personal sweet spot.
Thanks for the comment! Definitely think the 997 is a wonderful car, and that's a great point about the engines that I hadn't considered but believe to be true from seat of the pants experience, beyond just the manual vs PDK difference that I touched on. Appreciate the insight!🍻
@@DarkstarDarth total 986 Boxster production ('97 to '04) is estimated at 160k. Total 996 911 production ('99 to '05) is estimated at 175k. Both cars did very well. It was a new era for Porsche, versus the previous 993, which by comparison only sold 68k units.
I felt the same after I sold both my first 996 and 997, which is why I felt compelled to buy this one again. Any plans to get another in the future? Thanks for the comment, appreciate the sentiment!🍻
@@FlawlessActivity I am looking. Probably a 996 is all I can afford with 2 kids now. I guess when I get the e-tron paid for I can pull the trigger on one.
997.1 was a lame attempt to recapture old air cooled car looks. Fail. The 996.1is unique for this reason and the coupe is one of the most beautiful 911's ever made headlights and all. 997 interior materials are cheaper and have too many buttons that paint-chip over time, 996 interior is more business like, simple, and easier to use. 997.2's are pretty, especially from the back, but are heavy and suffer bore scoring. Time is proving that the 996.1 is a sweet spot in the 911 lineage for beauty and dependability. The new cars are too big, sorry, they're more like the Panamera Coupe lol, and less engaging than a manual 996.1. They're fast but my other car is a Tesla so who cares.
I agree with your assessment of the 996 vs 997. The 997 does not feel as raw and mechanical as the 996. I've owned both and sold my 997. I plan to keep my 996C4S forever. As people start going back through the generations, they will understand the decrease in performance but an increase in driving pleasure of the older cars.

@@igglybiggly6951That’s interesting from your mechanic regarding the tip. Mine is Mar ‘00 build so dual row?
About to purchase my third 996. You get it.
Damn !
Great video ...thanks for taking the time to do...great commentary on truly a hidden gem
Thank you! Happy to share! Really appreciate the comment and support!🙏
First 4 secs epic!!!! Can just repeat it over and over
I have one for nine years and I love it!
Awesome to hear! Appreciate the comment! May you continue to enjoy it in good health!🍻
@@FlawlessActivity thank you, you are so kind.
Atlas gray is an incredible color. Nice car.
Thank you for the comment and support! Really appreciate it. Definitely love atlas gray, and find myself forgetting it's gray sometimes and thinking it's blue. It is incredible, and tricky like that.🍻
Beautifully put! I couldn't agree with you anymore. Mine too will have a place in my garage forever
Thank you! Appreciate the comment and completely agree with the sentiment!🍻
Nice comments! We sold our nice 996 4 Cabriolet and bought the 996 turbo cabriolet and it is amazing❣️
I hoped I hit the 911 mark. I love your video. I totally agree with you. 996 is truly the sweet spot.
Great video! I just bought one in nearly the exact same spec! Is this a stock exhaust?
Thank you! Yes, the exhaust is stock, but I believe it is the sports exhaust. It sounds great, and is noticeably more audible in the 4-5k range than my previous C2 996 that I believe had a standard exhaust. Both 996s definitely sound more raw than my 997 ever did!
I saw what you did there, Mr. Rear3/4view! Nice video ... thanks!
Amazing deal on an amazing car!👌 Thanks for the comment and support! Much appreciated!

I completely agree, I searched for 997 three years ago and ended up buying a 996 2003 I just felt like a glove I preferred the drive and the right price actually it really wasn’t price to be honest with you I enjoyed the drive ,Previously owning an 87 I really enjoy my 996 great video very well illustrated. And headlights actually look racer ,,,,,

Did you end up getting It?
I had a number of 911's, the 996 is old fashioned simple had one for 12 years now and love it.
Definitely! And these days old fashioned simple is refreshing. Enjoy it in good health!🍻
Amazing video mate! I had a Need for Speed: porsche game on gameboy when I was a kid and every time I see any porsche it brings me back good memories.
Thank you! Born and raised in LA, but living in the Bay Area now. You've got some great content on your channel too! Subbed. Where are you located?
@@FlawlessActivity thanks! Based in Chicago but I’ve done a pop up in LA, last year and I’m trying to get around more. I’m mostly on Instagram

I have a gen.1 996 convertible 2000 model stick shifter in Vesuvio , and I Love it to pieces!!
Thank you for the comment and support! I really appreciate it! Vesuvio is such an awesome and unique color! Enjoy it in good health!🍻
Great video! Just picked up a 96 993 but would love a 996 as well. I regretfully. hate I got rid of my 08 cayman s. Cheers!
What a nice review 🔥🔥 sounds like a motivation to buy the 996. Thanks and keep it going 👍
Do continue to enjoy yours in good health!🙏🍻🤙
the silhouette of the 996 C4S is actually one of the best looking, on your comparison image. Newer cars are too neat.
It's a head turner for sure! Just saw a super clean example at the local mall the other day and spent a minute really just admiring how great the car looks all around. Very underrated just because it doesn't quite fit the mold the way other generations have...
awesome! I agree@@FlawlessActivity
Thanks for the long interesting Porsche 99X history and your perspectives.
I agree with your commentary and assessment on/of this car 100%!

Having recently (one year) bought a '99 C4, I agree with your thoughts 100%.
Something about the feel of the car that is hard to put ones finger on, but that is a car that I look forward to driving every time.
Thanks! Really appreciate the firsthand account, and glad to hear it your experience matches my own! Enjoy it in good health!🍻🤙
I enjpyed your breakdown of the 996 and how it does deserve more credit with respect to the overall cost per fun ratio. Well done and I will have one of my own this summer.
Thank you! Really appreciate the comment and support! Do you already have one picked out, or still need to conduct a search?
I would love to find where to do the IMS change you did on my 996.2 at 74k miles... any direction you can point me to undergo this?
I just did a search on the LN Engineering IMS Solution page and they have a list of certified installers. Go to imssolution dot com /certified-installers/ for an approved list of installers that can help by region
Very happy with my 1999 996, 72k miles, IMS / RMS, clutch done at 60k miles so pretty sure I've added years to the life of this car

Love my 996!! Great video
Thank you! Really appreciate the comment and support!🍻

I’m supposed to be selling my 98 Carrera but not really trying :)
Love your exhaust noise is it standard ?
Thank you. Search has been on. ;)
You're welcome! Thanks for the comment and support! Really appreciate it! Best wishes finding exactly what you are looking for!🍻🤙
I've been well and truly bitten by the 996 bug, and think I've found the one...an '01 4 Cab, 86K and very well sorted (known issues handled, very good maintenance history, clean as Kim Woodburn's kitchen (that British cleaning woman who had a TV show....deep cut lol.) One thing it has which surprised me at how much I liked it-or more accurately, how little an issue it was for me-Tiptronic.
Excellent video and feedback. I love this video but my bank account hates it since now I want a convertible 996 4S.

How much was the LN solution labor? I'm in the Bay Area too and thinking about getting it done on my c2 with 80k miles
All of us who own one of these agree, so good, and just drive it. Quick question, how did you hard wire your V1?
My mechanic who I mentioned in the video did the install on this car for me. I have done it myself on other cars in the past by running a wire behind interior panels to the fuse box and tapping into ignition switched power. Now there are a ton of hardwire kit options available. I know my mechanic used one, but not sure which, and not sure what he tapped into.
I wonder why he has the radio tuned to 99.7???
Haha, nice catch! Radio tuned to 99.7. Volume set to 0. Listening to 996🎶. Cheers!🍻
I agree, it’s not rational to say the 996 is not a pretty car or not a performer or grossly unreliable, etc. To me, if you like 911’s, they’re very much in-type in all respects. Great cars. They saved the company to boot.
Thanks Chris, really appreciate the comment and completely agree!🍻🤙

You're too kind! Thank you for the glowing comment and support! I really appreciate it!🙏
If you ever decided to sell your C4S cab…I’m sure there will be a lots of interest! 😂
Thanks for the comment! Yes to your points, and 996 cab is the first cab where the top down actually looks great, and not just an after thought!
986 boxster saved Porsche from what I've heard. Affordable, first mass produced.
And yes, I do have Hard Back Original seats.
I miss my 996 so bad 😭😭... I lost it in a flood 😭
Totally agree! :)
Thanks you! Really appreciate the comment and support!🍻
Let me know if you want to part with it … I love this car and it would be my fist Porsche❤😊

Love it! You can't see the headlights behind the steering wheel! I don't even think they look bad, just different. Thanks for the comment and support! Appreciate it!🍻
Also, I must tell you guys, If you can find an early 996. Buy It ! You'll be glad you did. !!
I believe as history explains the boxster saved Porsche.
Yup, definitely meant generally that the water cooled generation of cars, whether 996 911 or 986 Boxster saved Porsche! Thanks for the comment!
@@FlawlessActivity ..the 911 was unaffordable and the boxster saved Porsche from bankruptcy.
Love my c4s 996 cab so much that ive just bought a 6k private plate- 911 HAA call me crazy!!!! Yes agreed- 997 feels boring

@@FlawlessActivity I am looking. Probably a 996 is all I can afford with 2 kids now. I guess when I get the e-tron paid for I can pull the trigger on one.
smash
Thank you for sharing your first hand experience! Really nice to hear I'm not alone in feeling this way. Enjoy your 996 C4S in good health!🍻
