The tourists need education in procedures involving Guard routines AND the presence of mounted horses.

Stop making excuses, you wouldn’t walk up to a armed guard or police officer and get in there way or interfere with them or their equipment, so why would you do it to an armed guard in London, they are on duty, they are armed, they usually sit on very well behaved horses, but they , whilst they have been domesticated, selected for there temperament and very highly trained, as are the horses (sorry guards, just a little inter-service banter), are a blending of man and horse, either could misbehave (more the horses) but everyone has bad days and don’t want to be there, tourists need to use common sense and we do NOT need to think for them, not using common sense is getting to be almost nonexistent, so if they can’t think for themselves then I am sure that there is an app or Google to turn to if you are not sure of the etiquette, whenever I am somewhere that I don’t speak or understand the language I make THE EFFORT to learn a little and buy a phrase book and NOT behave in a way that is not the etiquette in that place/country, it’s called having respect for that place/country and not an extension of my country.

Those idiot tourists trigger me. I'm an American veteran, military police and force protection - and I can't stand to see the gross degree of disrespect with which the British Royal Guards are treated. The Royal Properties are not an amusement park. The Guard's are not Disney characters in costume. They ARE professional soldiers/ members of Her Majesty's Armed Forces.
You will NOT see this type of behavior tolerated at the Royal Palaces or Guard mounts in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Canada, San Marino, the Vatican, the Quirinale, Arlington Cemetery because tourists who get out of line are immediately dealt with. You don't see them taking selfies with the Royal Guards, grabbing the reins of the horses, laughing, mocking etc... Why ? because their arses will be thrown out, deported or arrested. Moreover you don't see the civil police except for traffic control when marching through the streets.

I am really starting to think that the whole area should be better "marshalled" so that tourists DON'T get in the way of the soldiers, don't clog up the area within the gates and simply be given written instructions about what and WHAT NOT to do. I also think that the police should spend a bit more time getting tourists out of the way when they are clearly obstructing the Guards. I don't recall any major incidents at Horse Guards at least not since I was a child a very very long time ago but tourists have become a bigger problem these days and some people have no respect at all. It would be so easy to take a photo and just wave a thank you when done. Plus, stop starting and the Guards as it they are not actual humans standing in front of you.

    • @allandavis8201

Instead of putting the onus on the military or the police it should ultimately be a matter of common sense that you don’t mess with a guard, whether it is in central London and guards in ceremonial uniform or some other location where the military personnel are on guard duty as part of base defensive positions, common sense seems to be a thing of the past and people except everyone except themselves to be responsible for their actions and safety, I can guarantee that if a horse kicked and injured someone who does not read English they would sue the ministry of defence for the signs not being in every language and dialect currently written/spoken, but why should they, yes we live in a multicultural society and tourism is a part of life, but, if you live in Great Britain 🇬🇧 (for example) then you should be able to speak and understand English, if in Spain it is Spanish, France it’s French, if you are on holiday in a foreign country and they don’t speak your native language get a phrase book or translation app, learn to speak a few words or phrases, but do NOT expect ever local citizen to speak your language. Sorry but there are no excuses as far as I am concerned.

@@allandavis8201 WELL SAID! I am Australian deaf and never had any problems in when I visited Singapore. They speak both English and Chinese there. And I always research the laws of any country I go to in case they have more strict laws and punishment than my country of origin. For example in Austraia you only get a small fine for littering but if you littered in Singapore you get caned.
Same in GB. Search and respect the laws and customs of the country you are visiting!

Military procedures and civilian attitudes make strange bedfellows, The just don't mix. A paint job marking the routes of the guards with a cautionary note for civilians to stay clear might help. Years ago civilians showed respect. But today manners are no longer a part of society. The Horse Guards hs beenn converted to a shouting match by Guards for civlians to "Make way." Civilians response is one of disgust. They believe they have the right of way.

They should cordon off the marching routes of the guards and keep the tourists away from that area. Only one or two people should be able to stroke the horse at a time as sometimes they seem to suddenly rush and there will be four or five people grouping around the horse and guard which is disconcerting for them both.
