  • Recreational vehicles are connected to the tow vehicle with a 7-pin electrical connector that passes power from the tow vehicle to the trailer for marker lights, battery charging, turn signals, brake and backup lights as well as power for the electric brakes. Today I upgrade the cable and connector on a travel trailer with a new kit. Let's get started and see how it goes...
I fix my own cars, renovate houses, tinker with almost everything, take things apart to see how they work, cut my own firewood, take short trips into the wilderness, dabble in computers, drag innumerable objects, vehicles and other things home to dismantle, discover and repair, and then I share the adventures and tips with my viewers here on UA-cam. It was fun while it lasted but trailer wiring always gives me a rash! No two seem to be done the same. Hair-pulling is always on the menu when I have to crawl under something and figure out what's going on. I knew this topic would bring out strong emotions in everyone. Go Ahead- Throw a tool across the shed!!! It'll feel good to let it out!

The installation looks great, good job. We have junction boxes on our big trailer and it makes the wiring much easier and more reliable

I wish the kit came with a bit longer cable. It cost only $30 USD so it was a good item for the price. Mounting the box up underneath will make future access easy. Take care!

Hi Craig, nice job done and well done sorting out the wiring, Big Son`s scribble work lessons has taught you well 🤣🤣

Nice to hear from you, Nev! This kit was a big improvement and the connector going into the truck fits much better than the old one (that was loose). I've always paid close attention to Renaldo's drawings and it shows! Haha

@@Dancing_Alone_wRentals Yes, I'm slowly getting better at my scribbles. I like the cardboard drawings that are becoming more common on my channel. Maybe they will be enshrined some day along side of Rembrandt, Picasso and Renaldo? Who knows?

Nev is right, big son sure thought you good, nice job on the wiring craig, i was thinking i might not of thought about the connection of the other plug lol have the tai, lights operate the ejection seat 😊

Some days, an ejection seat would be a welcome addition! Trailer wiring is always a nightmare! There are so many configurations and wiring colors that do different things. And vehicle manufactures don't play well with others. Each seem to make up their own colors just to piss me off! Every time I have to wire up a plug it's a start-all- over-again-operation of learning just what works what.

@@GuysPlayingWithTools Just yesterday, I lost a nut in the grass while taking apart a table saw. I need to use my magnetic pan more often. The nut is lost forever in the grass. Or it might become a missile next summer when the lawn mower finds it!

@EverydayProjects I have 4 or 5 different types of magnets that come in handy every day. The 2i like best are the big flat ones to hold nuts and bolts and the extendable magnet to reach under/inside. I have a really strong one screwed on the end of a broom handle type stick for digging through the grass.

OMG! I have spent an entire career fixing customer's trailer cords! And in addition RV plugs have a differant configuration than the trucking industry. Also your image at the end is all wrong to DOT colour code standard witch is
    yellow, left turn
    green, right turn
    red, brake
    black, tail
    brown, marker
    white, ground
    blue, auxiliary
Many poeple get confused when the towing vehicle has seperated signal and brake lights, but the trailer is wired signal and brake on the same circuit. There is a transfer box that can be wired to acomadate that. Having a junction box is a great upgrade to the trailer! That will come handy for future maintenance 👍
    Good one Craig ✌

Hi Marc. You are correct.... Commercial trailer 7-pin wiring is different than recreational vehicle 7-pin wiring. The color coding of the wires for each will spin a guys head! Further, farm machinery trailers use a pin connector, not the flat blades seen here. Then there's 6-pin connectors just to keep things interesting! Some use Blue for brakes, others use Blue for auxiliary. Lots of fun! I knew this would stimulate conversation and get some people to throw tools across the garage. My work is done! LOL

I was sure when I put this together last night that there would be a lot of strong opinions (and facts) because trailer wiring is the kind of topic that people lose teeth over in bars every Saturday night! It's right up there with Religion, and Politics as subjects that should never be discussed. If you've thrown a wrench or hammer across the shop (or through a window) I'll understand. Sorry for all the stress I've caused.
