1. Food For Thought (0:07)
2. 25% (4:55)
3. King (8:59)
These guys are next level when your stoned. Rest In Peace to the band members who have sadly passed on, and thankyou.💪👍
Ub40 best years 1979 to1982
What a great band they were. What a sound. British reggae. And by that what I mean is, black and white going to school together, playing together, going to each others houses for their teas, influencing each other with their music and culture. Then leaving school into the screaming shitstorm that was the Britain of the late 70s early 80s. Their political conscience and their chronicling of the social injustices of those times still stands up all these years later. So sad they went the commercial route later in the 80s.
Always loved ub40 from when i bought Signing Off in 1980. Their early stuff was political, haunting and mesmeric. . bought all their albums and singles. . seen them live many times. . sadly they succumbed to 'pop reggae' and infighting. That's what happens sometimes unfortunately. Fell out of love with them when they fell out with each other, but listening to this reminds of why i loved them so much for so many years.
Its like looking at a picture of your old girlfriend and the memories come flooding back.
This Peel Session is truly sublime.
They were so unique and ahead of their time.
Well written comment there mate... I agree with you 100%
Pity they turned into such a crap band but this early stuff is absolutely fantastic brilliant version of 'Food for thought' miles better than the single their early stuff is easily as good as Marley, Tosh or Third World in fact it miles better fantastic stuff
Apparently 'Food for thought' was recorded in a room in Birmingham whilst putting 10p pieces into a meter to keep the power going to finish the recording cant get anymore punk and DIY than that can you? pity they turned into such a shit generic 'Marley by numbers' dreadful 'cod reggae act' in the intervening years then again the civil servants lapped them up which says it fucking all , sell out cunts!
@@dermot51 The thing is they became what they hated. Songs like 'Little by Little' encapsulated their view of capitalism and the rich .... then when they made a few bob they became what they were fighting against for so many years. The irony? They fell out over money. Says it all really ....
First three or four albums were great, after that it all went down hill very quickly. Shame
UB40 at their most original and best
Yeah man lifted our spirits in the ghetto back in the 80s 😂🤘🏻
Raw.I like it.
This is UB40 at their absolute best. This and their debut album Signing Off is a masterpiece. For me it all kinda watered down after that.
Ally said as much in his Anything Goes podcast on here.
Absolute?That I can embrace.
I was a massive fan back in the day. Without doubt ‘signing off’ was their finest and one of the greatest albums of all time. Maybe because I’m from Birmingham just made me love them even more. They were at their best singing about politics, race and world issues. Listening to this great session takes me back to being a young lad again, hanging with mates and finding out about the world. Seen them a few times live, shame how it all ended up, the falling out etc, but these early days were just bliss!
I'm a fellow Brummie mate, totally agree with everything you just said.
@@darrenganderton776 Nice one mate!
Still sounds fresh as a daisy, Birmingham or London working class hero’s, songs that inspired change ❤
Seen 40 many times the Greek in the early 80s when everyone sung with smiles on their faces or in Vegas for a very rare gig for guns in the gettho that was magnificent
Signing Off - When this was released, I was actually a student in the good old days when we could sign on during the summer hols. I think we got about £15 a week and thought we were millionaires! I wish I'd kept my old UB40 card. Universal Credit just doesn't have the same vibe !!! Still got the vinyl album though. It's funny to think there are generations now who would have no idea what the actual UB40 was. Such a great band. Back in the day they sent my sister a sheet of paper with all their signatures on. Much treasured. They were also the reason I started playing bass guitar.
Late 70s early 80s I was only a kid but our flat was always filled with the sounds of dub ska n reggae , been allowed sit out on the steps with the teenagers all the ska n skin heads was too cool, then getting my first taste of the fashion (thanks Mam n Dad) ...wasnt allowed go for the skinhead look lol so it was black jeans white polo top white socks and my first ever harrington jacket n loafers ...then the teenagers bringing me back my ska patches (mam used to stitch all their patches for them) .... i used to feel 10feet tall sat out on those steps! Music and memories with me for life!
I think you and I might be long lost brothers. I totally identify with what you say. Because I did the same. The Mod revival and two tone/ska happened when I was 10/11 - wasn't allowed a skinhead but I too had the Harrington and later pilot jacket, all the rest of the gear. I cherish that time because it marked my awakening to music and what it could mean.
This version of Food For Thought is the best one ever recorded by a significant margin. Absolutely staggering piece of grassroots politico British reggae. Their first two albums were fantastic, and then they totally lost their edge
One of the first 7" records I bought, with the gem 'King' on the b-side
I always thought by the time they did 'Red red wine' they had lost the plot. I always preferred their earlier stuff - 'Present arms' & 'signing off'. The real sound of UB40.
@@danw1374 I agree
❤
As soon as red red wine took them to the mainstream it was all about money and how much the producers could make with as little effort as possible its sad really cause their vision of the country and the world really resonated with the youth and it gave them a voice oh well at least we got a few years of raw brilliant music R.I.P to the members now passed always legends
Best horn section ever. Amazing session.
Thought this band was great from the start. Food for thought has a particular fond memory for me. Sunderland were playing Cardiff away in 1979 and we had to win for guaranteed promotion. We drew but at half time they played Food for thought - magic and ithe memory has never left me.
Food for thought has to be the best ska/Reggae mix from the 70/80's. Love it.
SKA WAS EARLY 60TS....
Signing Off - Best Reggae Album from Europe ... this session is awesome
This is gold. When music meant something. 🫡
This sounds absolutely magic, listening to this and all the other Peel sessions from many years ago. Many thanks
Crisp recording.. Well produced, and love how these guys arranged their early stuff. Leave it to Peel to bring out the raw feeling, and left us with "Gems of music"
Johh Walters usually produced these sessions
Peel sessions always bring out the best in bands because the bands ain't compromising the band were constantly putting 10p pieces into an electricity meter to finish the eventual official single release recording now that's fucking punk
brings back good memories x
Used to drink in local pub with these guys so down to earth and would always play and just enjoy whole evening very out there but always paid their way and loved everyone
That echo is haunting. sublime..........
Ub40 at their finest
Wonderful tune - been listening to it since Signing Off was released.
UB40s split just killed them! They have lost thier sound. UB40 were unique in what they achieved. There original music was sublime. And the dub sessions were just hipnotic. The finest band ever!!
Up the Town!
I agree...Sibling rivalry destroyed an illustrious line up..Saw them in 1980 in Newport Shropshire at the village. They were awesome.
After they split it wasn't the same I now listen to the dualers.
@@boabydarin LISTEN TO REAL SKA FROM THE 60TS SKATALITES BABA BROOKES, BUSTER ALL STARS BYRON LEE RICO
Great UB40 session, spoiled by UA-cam's intrusive adverts.
Not a lot I can do about that unfortunately
adblock?
Timeless classics, even back in 79
The Music is Never Day, the best of my Life❤️❤️❤️👌👌👌
Great when they started...completely lost it from Red Wine onwards.
+Jp Hallo They were far better when they started...had something to say then went and sold out and turned into a third rate karaoke act.....evolved doing poor cover versions ? That's not evolving!
Got to agree, I'm a huge reggae fan, they had a hard sound in 80 ,81 very refelctive of the times . Steel Pulse, Aswad, Misty In Roots, Matumbi,Weapon Of Peace all great British reggae bands, but In my opinion Signing Off is as good as anything
Phil Jackson Got to agree there Phil that 80/81 period was magic. Was never as good after. Signing Off , Present Arms and UB44 were magic. Then it all changed. There were some good songs that came after and i like the Rat in Mi Kitchen album but no where near as good. the 90's onwards has been embarrassing and that country album in 2013 was a kick in the teeth for fans.
Phil Jackson agree totally
same as my girlfriend. She really loses it after red wine. A fucking nightmare to be honest even after a wine gum.
One of the best tunes they ever did ,could listen on repeat all the time top class 👍 🇬🇧
Soulful sax on King. Great spirit to this session.
Track list:
1 - Food For Thought
2 - 25 Per Cent
3 - King
UB40 sounding so hot
Thanks for sharing, Vibracobra23
+drzozzy you're welcome...tracklist and start times are (as always) in the description...but thanks
Love 25%, the melody and playing.
This is one of the best tunes ever top fav of UB40 👍 🇬🇧
What about Tyler , The earth dies screaming ,Dream a lie and Dont slow down
saw them first time in 1981 amazing group and songs at that time
Yes the best, at there Zenith. Unbelievable talent. Love em forever
totally agree, for me," signing off "was the pinnacle of their brilliance.
R.I.P Brian Travers
love these lads no problem no attitude just great music born in a really shit time, come on world ,learn from these lads peace
This is a fascinating insight into their early material. I didn't know they were performing these songs (Food for Thought, 25% & King) for quite some time even before their debut single were released. The performances were tight which is testament to the way they honed their sound. RIP Brian Travers & Astro.
One of me first LP and first contact with reggae and
stil love reggae
Thanks for posting. This is awesome music I enjoy a whole lot
The sax on King is Wow what emotion it portrays. Fantastic
What a session, love it👏🏻👏🏻
Early stuff ok! Great to listen again.
Que maravilha,vê esses caras assim juntinhos, esses anos primórdios com astro,na frente do ub40 foram roots na veia
`WOW...This is awesome (Food for thought ) ...Sounds just like the record .
Thank you for sharing these awesome sessions.
Used to record his sessions onto tape in the 70s but alas list them all over the years.
Great to hear them again .
Once again ....many thanks 👍
Billy Wake I still have a load of tapes of the John Peel show but now have no way of playing them. Sigh. Progress is a pain.
@@peterfreeman6677 How about buying a cassette player which inturn you could maybe plug into your pc via an adaptor.
Glad this has came up on my feed perfect !☺
the music never ends the key.
Had to listen to this after Liz Kershaw played UB40 on National Album Day on 6 Music stating the immortal words "when UB40 were good". So good in those early days - before they became so dull. Good stuff (shame about her politics)
With all due respect to Liz Kershaw she has no right to cast aspersions on UB40 she's a BBC lackey judging by the generic shite she plays who was no doubt told to say this for effect by some liberal wanker BBC producer never liked her or her dopey country bumpkin brother either the fact is UB40 went shit fairly quickly after the initial brilliant batch of songs in 1980 this Peel session is fantastic
Thank you for uploading.
Everyone has to move with the times and the audience. I don't know of any act that always has blinders. Allow it man✊🏾
I was so fortunate to see these guys in their pomp. Newport Shropshire, The Village. Happy memories. Didn't do much for my O level grades though :)
me too
♬Wooowww wonderful ❤👄👏💎😍teasure UB40.👄♬ Peel Session 1979❤ Classics ..♬
brings so many memories...
Que de souvenirs avec leur 1er album, un son bien différents, une voix bien planante, soulful !merci à eux de m'avoir fait aimé le reggae uk... Dub wise 👊
Great stuff! Thank you for sharing
Thanks again for sharing these peel sessions.
I remember listening to this session on 📻 with the white ear piece in. Top upload @Vibracobra23
I was hoping King wld be on this session. My mind is glowing.
Listen properly and it says Going , not Glowing :)
Miss Peel , he was an honoury musician and had a great ear for talent and generous rebellious heart 😂 should have been in a band himself
Miss Peel was a character from the UK 60s spy/thriller program called 'The Avengers'...!
The best British reggae band that has ever existed. UB40 gives away a spiritual feeling of the reggae music, transcending it to a higher sense of its religious humble roots.
Steel Pulse.
Aswad, Misty.
Woosh
Think u will find steel pulse are
Not forgetting Linton Kwesi Johnson. His output between 1978 (Dread Beat an' Blood) and 1983 (Making History) was fantastic, with the first three albums taking the lead.
Granted, his stuff has a very different vibe.
I believe I did listen to this broadcast. It was January 1980 and I wasn't sure who performs this song though the melody stuck in my head for years
This is as good music gets,i can't stop moving me feet to this stuff even after all these years. As others have said ub40's early stuff is top draw and i would include geoffery morgan in that.It started to go down hill after that but we still have the memories.
I couldn't agree more. Their early sound captured something that came from the experience of black and white kids growing up side by side.
Thank you so much for the upload! I was a massive fan as a child and then after a while mostly forgot all about the band. So glad to have found this old mix :)
This band always remind me of Guildford technical college where they were always on the duke box.
I was a 16 year old carpenter apprentice, no idea what I was doing
Dodałem to do mojej playlisty "Reggae"

I recorded this the night it was broadcast and still have the cassette. It’s a shame these recordings don’t have the Peel introduction and voice over from the time. Fantastic, they went downhill from here.
Great session rip John xx

GEFFERY. Can't you spell for fuck's sake.
Amazing band
love it
When I was a kid I ( I was 8 when this session came out ) just couldn't get my head round how this was the same band who put out all that mid 80s drivel...
I 've no idea what I'd have been like without Peelie, I really don't want to think about it. Turned me on to so much so young...
I was listening to a Vibracobra "Beat" session which I was really digging while I was under my truck(changing gear oil.... So when this group came on I was like thinking..."", this is pretty damn good". So out I come from under the truck to discover..... UB40, UB40!! I could'nt beleive it! Only thing I know of UB40 is that wine song, not one of my favorites to say the least.SO! point being... 1. happy surprises, 2. don't go around with a closed mind, 3.Like when I was a young man interesting things happen at 3 A.M. !!
Early UB40 was in a different league. Hearing this back in 1979/80 was mind blowing for me as a 13yr old
Signing off was such a brilliant album. I thought if that was their first - and home recorded - what would they do next? But it turned out to be their high-point. Such a shame. Still, to have such an album at all is a wonderful thing, even if what followed never quite hit the same high again.
my first vinyl 😉 given my age away lol
..class
you are fucking old.
terry tibbs mind your manners
I had this on Cassette. Signing off was such a fantastic Album, shame it all went ‘pop’ a few short years later, 1980 though was such a great time for UK music... better than the shit out today.... ok Radio 6 plays great stuff..
Frank 406 probably did yeah
I love early UB40 they sound perfect unlike their later sound which sounds very plastic and over produced.
Son los mejores europeos haciendo música reguel
music can be the think we need its in the think you are.
Wanderfull!!!
thanks for you great peel sessions. I got to see everyone that came to Australia except joy division and the sex pistols although I saw h rottens next band he got pissed at the fools spitting on him now that was funny
❤️❤️❤️
I've been working through the various UB40 albums recently. They made a lot of good tracks and I'm still finding a things to like from their late 80s albums. "Sing our song" from Rat in the Kitchen is a great one. The fairly recent "dub sessions volume 3" is a corker too. It's a pity they imploded, I still haven't worked out what happened. I think the main band are correct that Ali and Astro should not be using the UB40 name.
It’s was Ali’s band he started it all and is UB40 ! Without him anything else is just a tribute band
Simply z best
UB40 was great back then...
