Haken, rhymes with bacon. This is their heaviest stuff. For more melodic and jazzier stuff pick something from their first 3 albums. Of course the epics (Celestial Elixir, Crystalised, Visions) are the best, but perhaps Drowning in the Flood or Cockroach King would be shorter for the channel.
You and Lex would love Pain of Salvation for sure. No growls, prog with tons of emotion, genius music. I hope your wife gets better soon. Cheers from Portugal.
Thank you for doing this. I left you a comment a few videos back asking for more Haken and you promsied to do it during your free week when you choose what to react to and here you are making good on your promise! Reminder: both of you actually loved the first reaction of Haken. I had no doubt you would love more of them. They're brilliant and quite diverse in their prog styles. Heavily influenced by Yes and DT Would definitely recommend you dive deeper into them. Thanks again and God bless 🙏
Haken is so so so good. One of my favorite modern progressive bands of all time. I would check out Cockroach King, Falling Back to Earth or Celestial Elixir next. Also, the drama with the Iced Earth guitarist, Jon Schaffer. He was among those that stormed on the US Capitol Building back in January 2021, he was identified in several of the photos taken and turned himself in a few weeks later. and got 3-4 years in prison for obstruction and trespassing while armed with a weapon
I haven’t heard much Haken but really like what I have heard. This was a super cool song! Also, the audio in this reaction is absolutely spot on, thanks Nick!
Haken is a banger! Great catalog and perhaps one of the brightest stars in prog. The guitar work (7 and 8 strings along with the entire band) is excellent. Haken can be listened to and enjoyed by anyone. BTW- audio and video looks and sounds great!
This somewhat different from the earlier Haken that i know and love. They were more prog rock with some metal. I don't know if this song is representative of a new sound or not. Try Crystallised. ps, now listening to the whole song, I can hear a fusion of the two elements.
There are a few Metal bands that Lex would like: Royal Hunt: Try their song Time from their 1996 Live DVD. #nicknlexrequests ROYAL HUNT - TIME (Live 1996) #nicknlexrequests ROYAL HUNT - LAST GOODBYE (Live 1996) #nicknlexrequests ROYAL HUNT - FAR AWAY (Live 1996) Other bands could be: Stratovarius Helloween Ivory Tower Rhapsody of Fire Avantasia Gamma Ray Blind Guardian Ayreon Theatre of Tragedy Within Temptation Mystyca Odyssea (Spanish singing band from Victoria, Spain) Sirenia Edenbridge The Third and The Mortal
nick!! you have to check out sirens by tesseract!! alexia will love it is the most emotional song that they ever did so hard hitting in the heart clean singing for the most part, war of being is an amazing album !! please do a video :D:D
Nick the pronunciation of Haken is like bacon. Be sure to check out some songs I suggested that Lex would not like but think you may Death Angel - Mistress of Pain, Testament - Over the Wall, Nuclear Assault - Technology to start with.
Extol . . . just told _another_ guy on the "suggestion" post that I'm a HUGE fan. Azusa is good too, though as far as a genre, they are different, almost hard to categorize . . . Alternative Metal?
Hi Nick I've never heard this group before. There I are some aspects I like but overall I'm not that keen to be honest, however it has got my interest as in the comments it's mentioned their 1st 3 albums are quite different and more melodic & jazzier, so I will be checking them out. Who knows I may work up to tracks like this. I do like heavy metal and prog and the vocalist on this track is really good. Those 1st 3 albums have definitely now got my curiosity....as a footnote .. Devin Townsend does even heavier than this which I'm also not that keen on, yet I have all his albums ! Lol Thankyou for posting, & love to Lex, hope she gets well soon. X
This I like. Granted, as with most singers today...lessons are available, you know! But musically it is far more inventive than that of so many American pretenders. You have opened my mind and ears. Daily Doug interviewed Ross Jennings, you should enjoy.
Ligature Marks from the new Meshuggah album Immutable and also Amazonia from the latest Gojira album Fortitude would be worth checking out..Both great headache inducing tracks!

Like Metal Mark said, it's Haken like Bacon, but as German you are allowed to say HAAAKEN 🙂 Objectively considered Haken is a great band, everything - the guitar, bass, drums, vocals. Everybody who doesn't know to much Progmetal must love it. BUT : subjectively considered I hear so many parts in their music, which I've heard elsewhere before, so I'm impressed and not impressed. In similar cases the singer might be the small difference, Ross Jennings is for sure a great singer, I've seen him "struggeling" against Mike Portnoy and Eric Gillette and his Haken bandmates, when they performed Portnoy's Shattered Fortress and other DT songs, he did a pretty good job .... but still won't be in my Top 10 singers ... Interesting that nobody picked up the Iced Earth subject, and Nick, we talked about so much music, but none of us ever mentioned Iced Earth .... strange ... and they are on my wishlist. Albums Nr 2, but especially Burnt Offerings and Dark Saga, when Matt Barlow sang, are epic. Dante's Inferno is for eternity. Since I started my Iced Earth journey in 2000s, I also know The Glorious Burden with Tim "Ripper" Owens, which has some extremely great shredding guitar sound. I saw them live in 2013 with Stu Block and again in 2018 on their Incorruptible tour, another epic of this album is Clear the way, I'm sure all shredding fans love that song, too. You mentioned Jon Schaffer, who is an excellent musician. You did not mention, why he is in prison; maybe you don't know or did not want to start a discussion about what he did. I can only say, I'm glad living in a country, where you are allowed to demonstrate, just like in the USA .... but entering the Capitol illegaly ends in prison (I hope I don't loose more by writing my opinion)
Aww, sorry to hear Lexi is sick, I hope she gets better right away. Maybe drastic changes in weather? So as the video starts, I think Lexi would enjoy Haken's 1st 3 albums. They were closer to Dream Theater back then, with an outstanding vocalist that sounds very different than LaBrie. So last time you did "Nil By Mouth" which was an Instrumental (hence the name ;), but I remember that you liked it. Funny it may have given you an impression that they were a "Djent" type band, but for the last 3 albums they kind of went through a re-invention of their sound, a bit more complex, a bit heavier, and that Djent-like influence. But they were never a "harsh" type Prog Metal band (even though there is a Harsh vocal on a track from their 1st album, but its not much). They've gone through a few band member changes as well, where lots of people were getting worried about a "sound" change, but they have maintained quality and creativity. Yes! Lexi would have liked it (I think), the more melodic vocals would have put her to ease, and great Bass work. Their last few album "covers" have been very simple, more graphics instead of manipulated photographs like the 1st 3 albums. Very much trying to push themselves forward. Who knows what the next album will sound like? One thing they kept as well, the Dueling Guitars, no matter who has been in the band, they have consistently awesome Guitarists and Bassists (their original bassist "Thomas MacLean" left and became an excellent guitarist in his unusual Prog Metal band *To-Mera* which I sent you 2 CD's). Their longtime keyboardist "Diego Tejeida" just left the band in Nov. 2021 due to "very different musical visions" (so possibly he may have wanted the band to be closer to their roots), who was a bit "playful" like Jordan Rudess, so it will be interesting to hear what "Peter Jones" (apparently their original keyboardist that hadn't recorded an album with them) has in store. Yes, I agree Nick that this maybe (maybe) be too heavy for Lex, but she may like it, but not to hear often. But that will take more tracks, more time with this _type_ of Prog Metal, and discovering their earlier material. - Hoping Lexi gets well right away and plenty of rest. Nice reaction Nick, at the beginning you sounded like a late-nite AOR FM "Dj" 😋. If only terrestrial Radio was still like that and playing _Progressive_ music (and MUCH less commercials). Those were the days.
@@karlj.9501 Thank you, very much appreciate that :). Last I read on their wiki page (or for Thomas), Julie and Thomas had a project together, and there may be a track or 2, but after that . . .??? Another couple of CD's (To-Mera) I hope N&L will react to a few tracks somewhere down the line.

This is apparently the heaviest Haken album to date. They are a very smart neo-prog outfit.
