Haken (rhymes with taken) - one of my absolute favourite bands since doing UA-cam vids - I discovered them much like you have. Usually there are vocals - actually quite beautiful vocals. This track, Nil By Mouth - nothing by mouth - literally! Dive into The Mountain (their break-through album) - maybe just The Cockroach King from that record? Enjoy it! GO DOWN THIS RABBIT HOLE!!!!
Nil By Mouth is a medical term meaning "Nothing by Mouth", which means the patient is not to take anything orally/through their mouth due to difficulty swallowing.
Several Haken members accompanied Mike Portnoy as his backing band on the "Shattered Fortress" tour, where Portnoy played all the Dream Theater 12-step suite songs regarding his recovery from alcoholism. Eric Gillette, Portnoy's Neal Morse Band bandmate, also was on the tour playing John Petrucci's lead guitar parts.
I saw this live at the wonderful Loreley Open Air Amphitheatre as Headliner of Night of the Prog, great gig, I only felt sorry for the singer, the music was, just like at so many concerts a bit too loud and he really had a hard time, but he gave everything
There are (excellent) vocals in most of Haken songs (and if memory serves, the guitarist uses 7 and 8-strings guitars). Since Lex loved the calmer part at the end, i recommend the songs "Canary Yellow" and the epic "Nocturnal Conspiracy", with has one of the most beautiful parts, near the end, that i've seen in 25 years of prog music. The song "1985" is also amazing. Thank you for another excellent reaction video !
@@progperljungman8218 I just scratched my head over your statement before I realized that there was probably the word "female" missing. Got me all confused! 😁
Haken’s been my latest non-stop listening pleasure for weeks now. Quickly becoming the prog-metal kings. I suggest Messiah Complex, Visions, or Falling Back To Earth as your next reaction to them. You will not be disappointed.
Haken is after DT the next best thing imo. Just a brilliant band full of brilliant musicians. Also that head movement transition when the first riff started was hilarious! Songs I recommend to react next to: The Architect, Veil, Cockroach King, or maybe Atlas Stone.
This was a treat! I have heard one other song by these guys . Its called 1985. The mixing of the guitar work and the keyboards is so seamless . Really enjoyed this track! Thanks so much for reacting to it. Also great request Ian.
Haken are one of the best bands in the last 10 years in prog scene.. next Pain of Salvation , Fates Warning , Sieges Even , Soen , Appearance of Nothing , Poverty's No Crime , Conception and the list never ends...
I saw Haken live, supporting Devin Townsend, in 2019. The consert was one of the best shows I have ever seen. A mindblowing evening. If you love Spastic Ink/Watctower and are looking for more modern tech-metal, you should try The Safety Fire - Grind The Ocean. A gem of a record. Also Pcycotic Waltz - A Sosial Grace is a 90's cult classic!! 🤘
It's amazing. I've been listening to Haken for a few years & somehow missed this one until a few months ago when I got to see them live & they played it! Unbelievable! I've been playing it almost daily since!
Oh yeah! Haken are awesome! Best three albums for me in this order The Mountain, Visions and Affinity. Best handful of tracks Falling Back To Earth, Nocturnal Conspiracy, The Architect, Visions, Pareidolia. All their releases are chock full of great moments.
As the band would say; It's Haken, you know, like taken, but with an H instead of a T. As for the term Nil, it literally means without or nothing. Nil By Mouth is a medical term. It means Without Communications. The song title is fascinating terminologically if you're interested.
Nick really likes Symphony X so we did (my) reaction to Fallen. It was great! Haven’t done any since then and I’ll have to ask Nick if he knows Pagans Mind! Thanks for the suggestions! :) - Lex
Nick N Lex, I sent you an email asking if I could send you complete albums for your music library in zip file form. Don't know if it went through. Sometimes my email is messed up.
Haken teamed up with Mike Portnoy to play the legendary AA suite on a cruise prog event called The Shattered Fortress. The AA suite is a five part mega epic that spans five Dream Theater albums: 1) The Glass Prison from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 2) This Dying Soul from Train of Thought 3) The Root of All Evil from Octavarium 4) Repentance from Systematic Chaos 5) The Shattered Fortress from Black Clouds and Silver Linings
For further Haken, try something off of the albums Visions, The Mountain, or Affinity. The other few albums are probably for after you get used to them. People suggesting Messiah Complex are misguided. It plays better after you've delved into their discography.
Nil, Nada, Zip, Zero, Zilch, goose egg ... all mean “Nothing.” So nothing by mouth could be medical orders before surgery ... or in this case, maybe “no lyrics” or “no vocals.” Lol 🤪
I thought this was Gary oldmans masterpiece Nil by Mouth not this 😂 sorry wrong video for me but il give it a like . If you haven't already watched Nil By Mouth by Gary Oldham then you should its easily one of the best British films ever made its a not easy viewing because of the subject matter but its dark its very realistic.
Just to add to comment below. You can find the best version of the song at Nighwish's You Tube channel. Entitled: Nightwish- Ghost Love Score (Wacken 2013) -David, from Vancouver, WA. If it suits you there is plenty more where that comes from. Band around since 2005 and still going strong. When you discover Nightwish you will likely have the same reaction everyone else does. "Why have I never heard of them?" Your jaws are going to hit the floor. Remember this is Symphonic Metal, a totally different animal.
By the way, if you want to triple your viewership engage the “Nightwish” army, by reacting to “Ghost Love Score”..... never was threr a more supportive (and kind) international group of people. You need to review while watching the band.... not just listening... show the video while watching it, because it is very visual.
Are you aware of "Nightwish." A Finnish Symphonic Metal Band with a 6'1" female Dutch singer who has the voice of an angel (operatic at times.) I suggest you begin your journey into Nightwish with a song 2013 Live Concert. Production values unlike anything you have seen. Song "Ghost Love Score" Live at Wacken 2013. Wacken Germany has an annual outdoor festival biggest congregation of Metal. Nightwish is totally different than any preconceived notion of a "Metal" band. Be prepared to lose it when you hear Floor Jensen (the female vocalist.) I call her the "Valkyrie." In Norse mythology the Valkyrie took men slain in battle to heaven. She is a truly powerful singer who will have Nick "laughing" a lot. She is a Goddess.
Nick! You don't know "Futbal" (Soccer) terminology? :D Milan 4 - Germany Nil (0) ;). So like that 1 playlist I sent of all Instrumentals ("a silence so LOUD"), this song is basically entitled "No Voice" (zero mouth - no vocals). Later Haken is much heavier and has that "Electronica" vibe and "Djent" style at times (this era). The early Haken is VERY much like Dream Theater, very different vocal style/timbre though (see their 1st 3 albums). Not many bands can do this, but they basically re-invented their sound by the album "Affinity" (2016) and have built on that. As I hinted on another comment (under "Riverside"); I was listening to a Progressive Rock/Prog Metal Internet Station heavily back in 1999 thru 2011, and it had a mix of International listeners that would "Chat"/text on the live chatboard that was on the main page, as you could see what was requested in the queue. We were treated to A LOT of bands before they got bigger recognition (Pain of Salvation, Fates Warning, Leprous, Riverside, Spastic Ink, Blotted Science, Sieges Even/Subsignal, Sun Caged, Andromeda, OSI, Black Bonzo, Big Big Train, Porcupine Tree, Beardfish, Ayreon, Big Elf, Presto Ballet, Änglagård, Pallas, Threshold, Wobbler, Flower Kings, Ritual, Frost*, Devin Townsend/Project, Voyager, and on and on and on) . . . and we were onto Haken on their Demo called "Enter the 5th Dimension" (2009), and we knew that there was something special here. Haken became HUGE in Progressive Rock/Prog Metal circles, won best new Artist in "Prog Magazine" and I believe at "Prog Archives dot com". They've garnered a lot more fans since their debut "Aquarius" (2010) which is a stellar album and made quite the impact when it debuted. You have all their fans here suggesting some great tracks to listen to, and history behind them (and performing Dream Theater's "12 Step Suite" with Mike Portnoy after he left DT). But . . . A "Did you Know": The original Bassist for Haken; Thomas MacLean, was also an excellent guitarist, and had a side band called "To-Mera", which was an odd combination of a Female-fronted Darkwave/Symphonic Prog Metal band _meets_ Math Metal, kind of like if Epica or Nightwish were a Technical Prog Metal band. Unfortunately Thomas left Haken in 2013 after "The Mountain" album. Also unfortunately, To-Mera only had 3 full-length albums to their credit (which are all fantastic) and a couple of Ep's. Thomas then created his own mixing and engineering production business. But I hope one day he returns to playing Guitar again. That was music, now sports! Germany has come back to beat Honduras, 3 - Nil! . . . - Glad you enjoyed some Haken, now hear "Song" tracks and the unique voice of "Ross Jennings" :D.

I had the opportunity to see Haken just before the pandemic and their ability to perform very complex and technical music live was remarkable.

Awesome... that was a first time listening for me, too! Thank you, you're great!

Really good song but I don't think this is the best introduction to Haken, I suggest you react to Falling BackTo Earth, that's one of their best
Yeah Falling back to Earth is a great track, I think the Mountain is probably their most accessible album.
Agreed, good idea.
Your have to check out the Messiah Complex suite from off their latest album called Virus. It's beyond epic-right up there with Dream Theater!!
Yeah and the Djenty riffs are probably their heaviest yet🤘😁

If Lex does not lean toward typical metal I TRULY believe she will be enthralled with Nightwish
