    Hey CM, I think something people do not appreciate about game development is the sheer amount of different skills you need to acquire. For instance, for my world map I had to learn how to draw isometric shapes... or how to draw in the first place!
    People only ever see a finished product, they don't see the countless hours if work and frustration that went into it.

    • @CodeMonkeyUnity
      @CodeMonkeyUnity  4 роки тому +16

      Yup that's definitely true! Especially as a solo indie dev it really requires knowing a bit of everything.

    Had no idea you’ve spent twenty years doing this, now I know why you have such good knowledge of Unity, I think most people have totally unrealistic expectations of what they can achieve, they think they are going to make the next GTA or Fornite when they are one person, when AAA games cost millions and are made by dozens of professionals

    • @CodeMonkeyUnity

      Heh yup, for my third Flash game somehow I had the brilliant idea of trying to make a massive MMO of Cops vs Robbers.
      Naturally I had no clue how difficult that would be so kept working on it and finally realized it was way too much and dropped the project after about 6 months.

    I've made plenty of games for old BASIC minicomputers and for DOS... but since Windows, I only really made one simple game of battleship. The 64k and ~200k memory limits were a great way to force you to actually finish games - the Windows world of ever-updating DirectX versions and everything makes it very easy to keep starting over and over and over... :)

      Its ALOT of work to make a game, it has to start with the game document. a big huge document of all the rules and rooms in the game.
      Unreal Engine is a headache to try to script even though its got great graphics.

    Amazing to see all the hard work you have put to get better. It really shows in your videos.
    Also, what are your opinions on the new input system? I presonally couldn't get the hang of it, but it seems promising.

      @CodeMonkeyUnity  4 роки тому +1

      I haven't used it yet but from what I've seen they are going in the right direction with how all the actions and inputs are set up. A lot better than the previous input system which is barely usable.

    Amazing video. I have to thank you because I learned Unity mainly thanks to your tutorials and I got a job as a Unity programmer (I create small VR games).
    I still have a question, I'm going to make a strategic game based on the grid system (project for studies)
    and I wonder what is the best method to save the map state (position of buildings, their condition, amount of cash etc.)

    Awesome video CM! - I guess I’d love to do the same thing but I’ve decided to go with Gamemaker2 rather thank unity. Currently trying to get better at coding, and watching tutorials! That’s said although you don’t dabble with gamemaker I still subscribe to your channel and watch your videos just to gain general knowledge. I very much enjoyed hearing about your path! - Thanks :)
