I carry a first gen LCP and love it. It does have a long trigger pull but I shoot it often and have mastered it. It is accurate and dependable. The only thing that I wish Ruger had done is to have designed it to stay locked open after the last shot in the magazine has been fired.
I've had my LCP gen2 for a few weeks now... I bought it with the stainless slide since I like its looks. While I was initially enamored with the red trigger and idea of a Custom, I realized that the new, improved sights for the regular model were not only significantly better than the old model yet much better than the Custom's which are raised too high and snag too much as you pointed out. Since the trigger was also widened and improved over the original model, I just didn't and don't see any advantage a Custom has over my second generation LCP (no hyphen in serial #) except for the pretty, red trigger. As far as reliability is concerned... it seems the vast majority of new owners have perfectly-functioning little guns right out of the box. Mine digested some 30+ year old PMC hollow points effortlessly as well as some Winchester white box. I'm completely impressed with the LCP. Thanks for the review!
I agree you made the right choice! Stainless for me too! The (custom) is "NOT" a improvement in my opinion...The sights are WAY TOO BIG! Ive shot both and the triggers are very very similar...they have the same pull and break..other than red/aluminum and width, theres minimal difference in triggers. Give it some time and you will see more people going back to the gen-2 instead of the custom!
I'm a 1st time gun owner, bought a used Ruger LCP a couple days ago, shot with it today for first time. Trigger pull took some effort for me and it's very snappy. But I expect I'll get used to it as I shoot with it more.
My LCP is the unofficial second generation (no hyphen in the serial number) w/a slightly better trigger and sights and the take down pin has never been a problem. It has also been 100% w/everything I’ve put down range, is accurate and easy to carry & shoot.
Appreciate your review! I have a gen1 and gen2 and considering a gen3 custom lcp. BUT loved the fact that I can change the obnoxious signts on gen3 by franksteining the lcp custom. That is an awesome idea! Thanks again!!
I own a 1st gen lcp and I carry in a ankle holster when it’s not in my car console. Don’t mind the trigger at all, the problem I have is this beast has crazy recoil and with nothing to hold onto it wants to jump out of your hand. So I purchased a Hogue grip on Amazon for $10 for better grip. But the grip does mess with the capability of deep conceal it prints like a 9mm with that grip, but it’s the only way a person with large hands can shoot this beauty.
Boy! Am I coming late to this video! One thing not mentioned in this video regarding trigger pull is the fact that the gen1 LCP when fired returns (for lack of a better description) the hammer to the "full rest" position for each subsequent shot. The gen2 models start, and return, to a half-cock position making the trigger pull weight a bit more manageable. The LCP Custom makes it even more manageable. Newest LCP models, such as the LCP II (forget about gen1 & gen2) start and return the hammer to a full-cock position, making the trigger weight even lighter. & somewhat shorter. I figure that the LCP II is as close as Ruger will get to what we REALLY want, a striker fired LCP. Just my guess!
Nice gun dude, you're right, that's an excellent custom combination you've got there. I might pick up an lcp myself one day, thanks for the tips and history lesson.
I have an early first gen ive been carrying for over a decade. Has never failed me. Ive been itching to get a new pocket piece but then as i was looking at my lcp i decided to just give it an over haul with lighter spring set and a short stroke trigger upgrade and just keep on carrying. My only complaint with the early first gen is the trigger so im hoping this will make me fall in love again.
I agree the trigger is smoother on the Custom, however the reset is different and not very forgiving. It is much easier to rapid fire the older model. I had to order new holsters because the sights on the Custom wouldn't work in most of my holsters.
Cool good for you! hang on to the Gen 2 slide/sights you may be needing it when you reach the magic age of 50 like me. Kudos to Ruger for making the Gen 2 for grandpas like me. Great vid! Update on the reliability on the franken-gun when you get a chance. Thanks for pointing out the milling differences on the 2 guns good to know. What are you running through it any hot loads or just standard pressure range loads? I wish S&W would wake up and do the same trigger with the BG .380.
You did a good job. Have the original was planning a second purchase. Was considering the custom. I have decided now that the originals a better gun for its use.
I do like both but love the first gen better. I recommend using a touch of paint/nail polish on the front and rear sights just to make shots easier. Remember this is a close up pocket gun, Ruger never intended for the sights to really matter at extended ranges or to make the sights very accurate. Throw a Laserlyte side mount laser and a Houge grip and you have an excellent CC piece.
Seems like the recoil spring cut on the barrel isn't just "bigger", but is also deeper (compressing the spring slightly less also). Does the guide rod stick out on one more than the other?
Cool review man, I just bought the regular LCP for my birthday but was thinking about the custom as well. The reg was on sale for 199 so I ended up going with that instead of the custom (280) cause I plan on it being my EDC and I don't need a more sensitive trigger on a handgun with no safety that I'm conceal carrying lol.
I'd prefer the 4th gen sights to be a LITTLE taller than the 2nd gen sights, but still built into the slide (OR make it use sights that are compatible with the Kahr CW380). I DO think the larger indention for the RSA is to help with the peening issue they had with the original metal recoil rods. I love the "custom" but the sights are a BIT too high and pointed...I'm not sure who thought that was a good idea. Why not MEDIUM height and RAMPED?!
Excellent video. You have me thinking about filing down those tall sites, carefully and equally of course, to a better proportion. Dab of TruBlue and it should look good. Just a thought. Ruger went from one extreme to the other. Cheers!
I just bought a lCP a blued sort of second gen . Is there any good aftermarket triggers out there so I can replace the factory trigger. Any tips would be appreciated
Have experienced, and seen videos of others, having problems with misfiring, "jams", whatever..,not cycling / ejecting the round. If memory serves, this was with a new LCP (for sure in my case) and only factory oil. Question: Have you experienced this? If so, has oiling it taken care of the issue? Finally, that gen 3 looked like it has grease inside the slide. What's up with that? Thanks. Great video.
The only issues I've had has been with Tula steel case ammo, and even that was tolerable for target practice (1 - 2 FTF's per box 50). No issues with 90gr HP's or brass case FMJ's. I would NOT suggest 95gr (or heavier) HP's for carry/PD in the LCP. Stick with 90gr GoldDot or Hydrashock for best performance and reliability and you can bet your life on it. Good observation about the grease, it sure was a mess and may have contributed to the initial FTF's, as I shot it right out of the box. It was G R I T T Y !
Had the original lcp and couldn't hit broad side of barn with it. Traded for custom and with improved sights and trigger, I can shoot it much more accurately. With regards to bigger sights hanging up, I've never had this happen in 8 years of carrying.
1st gen trigger does suck. the sights on the custom slide do suck, too for the intended purpose of the firearm. nice slide on that gen1. i bought the LCP-II. no probs with it & i like it fine. in 80's i had a chrome plated colt mustang .380 S/A... it was quality and i liked the S/A of it. i agree with you that for the money the LCP is it. a colt costs too damned much for a bang-around EDC for me. i got a LC9s Pro 9mm, too and i like it a lot, too. ruger's been getting their act together, IMO. i think the shield9 is a good gun, but i don't like the trigger on that bodyguard .380 . ruger lost their mind putting those huge sights on that LCP Custom.... defeats the purpose. not sure, but looks like maybe ruger stopped production of the LCP Custom - i haven't seen any new ones for sale on the web? if i had already owned an LCP or an LCP Custom i doubt i would have sold either one just to buy an LCP-II?....... a few features i like better on the LCP-II, but all of'em are good enough for me. here in my state we have gun trading/buying/selling websites where you go buy it face to face and usually at a great price. even FFL dealers are on there. here a brand new LCP (gen-I) can be bought directly from an FFL dealer for $200.00 even. that's cheap. i see'em for $180 and then you pay the sales tax. damned good gun for only $200.00 . thx4vid & make some more of'em!
The pin was a pain to get off. I had some very minor finish wear (honestly not even sure if thats what it is from) because of it. Ended up having to put a cloth over it and really trying to pry it off. Also noticed the polymer trigger pins are super tight out of the box. I was expecting that I'd be able to push the pins out like a Glock when I was installing a Hogue Grip. My punch slipped and scratched the frame slightly (1/6th of an inch but idiot marks just suck period.) Ironically I won't be using the hogue grip because I started having magazine insertion issues with it. As nice as it looks out of the box. It's a shooter not a looker.
I don't trust that old style extractor though. They changed, the design of the extractor for a reason and I've seen videos of the original design with rusty crud and a broken spring that made it cease to function.
I don't get much hangup with the sights on mine.. On the other hand I managed to hit 100% head shots at 15 yards moderate rate of fire with ease. If the sights bothered me I would just file them down some.
IMHO the lcp 2nd generation is the happy middle , a little bit better trigger but still a little heavy to make me feel safe to have in a pocket holster , a little bit bigger/better sights than the first gen but not as big as the 3rd to make me concern if they will snag in my pocket ..... I don’t get it is just a pocket pistol with a very short barrel you never gonna use for more than 10 yards .....use the money you saved and to buy more ammo and practice
Try the online auction sites, something like that you have to just keep checking... Also, you could call Ruger or one of their distributors (start with your local Ruger seller), and I'm willing to bet that they would do that for you. Although you'll likely have to pay a premium for it.
I'm not about to pay a dime to some squatter who's registered half a dictionary and done nothing else. I can see bidding on a domain that has traffic, but not some shit eater who gets the domain for a couple bucks and tries to sell it for a couple hundred. Fuck them.
Amzar Nacht . . . I agree, some charge well over a thousand for some of those parked domains... but I think you meant to put this comment on another video lol
Jeff Thomas ok, thanks for the answer, I wasn't sure what that indentation is above his thumb. on the right side. that you can see on the video thumbnail. I wish it did have a safety where you didn't need a pocket holster. then it looks like a perfect small gun. in my opinion. still looks like a handy gun with a pocket holster.
Thanks for making me feel muuuch better about not buying the LCP Custom. I have two Glocks with XS Sights and kinda missed them on my new Ruger LCP, but...I never liked the height of the factory sights on the LCP Custom. And, as you probably now know, the newest batch of standard LCPs have a much shorter trigger pull than the Gen. 1's. Comparing mine to your video, the travel appears to be very similar to the Custom. I have to say that I do like the skeletonized trigger of the Custom, but...not in red. So, thanks! I'm now very happy with my purchase of the "plain ol' LCP"...until I decide I must have the NEW LCP II. Geez...it never ends.
The new one is a Custom issue. The older one is a second generation LCP, not first. The pre-2013 issue is the first generation. What you have is a 2013-up generation.
+Danny Di . . . lol Thanks Danny!! Maybe you can find someone with a low-pro slide who might be interested in swapping? I bet there's alot of folks who would rather have the new slide with big sights. . .
The only other thing that I would like to see is the last round hold open on the Lcp. That would be outstanding on the custom with that new trigger but with the gen 1 slide. Love the factory seven round mags. I have two LCPs the custom is equipped with the crimson trace, Hogue back strap grip and a seven round mag. It is the perfect IWB gun for me in a holster. The sights are great for this, but for pocket carry this gun is too big. The original Lcp is aa all star for pocket carry and the sights are streamlined for this. After purchasing the Custom I realized that there is a give and take on all features but having both versions covers all of my needs. Each one does there job perfectly.
Just bought the 10th anniversary edition and I love. Real 007 material!
I got that one also
I carry a first gen LCP and love it. It does have a long trigger pull but I shoot it often and have mastered it. It is accurate and dependable. The only thing that I wish Ruger had done is to have designed it to stay locked open after the last shot in the magazine has been fired.

My mother gave me a 10TH ANNIVERSARY LCP and I love mine. It's pretty much always with me
I'm a 1st time gun owner, bought a used Ruger LCP a couple days ago, shot with it today for first time. Trigger pull took some effort for me and it's very snappy. But I expect I'll get used to it as I shoot with it more.

the cutout on the front of the custom slide is for the front sight screw.
Good informative video. My LCP is a gen 2(no dash) in my opinion it's darn near the perfect deep conceal, self defense pistol.
Appreciate your review! I have a gen1 and gen2 and considering a gen3 custom lcp. BUT loved the fact that I can change the obnoxious signts on gen3 by franksteining the lcp custom. That is an awesome idea! Thanks again!!
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback !!
I own a 1st gen lcp and I carry in a ankle holster when it’s not in my car console. They changed the sights because the average idiots kept complaining about no sights on the original version.
I'd prefer no sites as all.
Lcp just point shoot watch 1st bullet strike and adjust and fire 5 or 6 more.
Is not like you wanna use an lcp to shoot 50 yards
Boy! Am I coming late to this video!

retainers extra cutout is to get to the front sight to change or replace.
Basically they did. I jumped on the 10th anniversary addition. It has what you were saying. Guid rod, sights, and trigger!
Very good firearms, you really can't beat the quality for the price..
*This is a BEAUTIFUL BEAUTY!*
Nice gun dude, you're right, that's an excellent custom combination you've got there.
I might pick up an lcp myself one day, thanks for the tips and history lesson.

nice vid. really like your FrankenRuger LCP. Gave me a little more pride in mine. Good stuff.
Great review. Finally someone who gets it.
They did make it. The 10th Anniversary gun. Maybe it was your video lol. I enjoyed it thanks
Good video, just bought a Custom. I have no problem with the sights hanging up when used with a pocket holster. Look forward to new videos.
Thanks! Enjoy your new pocket popper! I've had nothing but great experiences with all the LCP's I've had!
kralcselin did u see the lcp 2 time to dump the custom....
Sweet looking gun, I'm jealous.
Just purchased a brand new LCP - no raised sights, no red trigger - great little gun. No problems with the off-mentioned, so- called "bad trigger."
Oh man, that looks awesome!! Congrats
+wamps 01 ... Thanks!!
Nice, just bought my 1st lcp, loving it. Tks
Can't you just use the gold edition slide on the LCP custom?
the reason there is a cut out on the newer gen,,, to install the front sight post,, look at the little hex head on the slide
My Ruger 380 LCP is great.
No snags at all.
It is a close range gun so no need for sights for long range.
I agree the trigger is smoother on the Custom, however the reset is different and not very forgiving. It is much easier to rapid fire the older model. I had to order new holsters because the sights on the Custom wouldn't work in most of my holsters.
awesome..guns..im geting my 380..next week cant wait.
Awesome!! Welcome to the club !!!
Great video. Gave me some good ideas on customizing my LCP custom.
Prices for the plain version and custom versions of the LCP are reduced nowadays to clear stock with rumors of a Striker fire version coming soon.
You called it buddy !
It's 2021 now...all these parts are available aftermarket...triggers, springs, rods, slide pines etc..
I just picked up a lcp nice little gun!
Cool good for you! hang on to the Gen 2 slide/sights you may be needing it when you reach the magic age of 50 like me. Kudos to Ruger for making the Gen 2 for grandpas like me. Great vid! Agreed !! I'll add that I find the sights are actually extremely accurate... I can keep tight groups at 20 yards all day!
I like the music in the beginning and I know that song lol
Nice lcp !
Seems like the recoil spring cut on the barrel isn't just "bigger", but is also deeper (compressing the spring slightly less also). Does the guide rod stick out on one more than the other?
How do you go through 5-6 LCP? (1:23) I can't imagine they wear out.
Cool review man, I just bought the regular LCP for my birthday but was thinking about the custom as well. The reg was on sale for 199 so I ended up going with that instead of the custom (280) cause I plan on it being my EDC and I don't need a more sensitive trigger on a handgun with no safety that I'm conceal carrying lol.

dang dude Frankenstein looks badass
I love my LCP lots of practice disappears and I’m beast with it
any opinions on the Sweet Pea trigger upgrade for the original LCP? Looks like a good fix from what I've seen.
Trade slides and your set! Good video. Thks
Right on !
A deep concealment gun that you can forget about...What happens when you need it and you forget about it??
Never looked at an LCP and said "that's sexy" but now I can say it is
Beautiful pistols man.
Right on !
excellent video!
Very good video
Thanks bro !!
Excellent video. You have me thinking about filing down those tall sites, carefully and equally of course, to a better proportion. Dab of TruBlue and it should look good. Just a thought. Ruger went from one extreme to the other. Cheers!
The cutout on the new slide is for the sight screw
I just bought a lCP a blued sort of second gen . Is there any good aftermarket triggers out there so I can replace the factory trigger. Any tips would be appreciated
Sweat pea trigger upgrade, I think sold by Galloway
I love the 10th anniversary better then the lcp 2 or the heavier lcp max for pocket carry and I like the aluminum trigger better.
Mine came like this excerpt the trigger is chrome and the slide doesn't have those engravings
Okay, I spoke too soon. Now I see that you are doing it.
+Prepare2Survive . . . lol yeah, I'll post a new vid soon with the range work results!
Something like 300 rounds through my custom , not one issue
If it's doing that you need to polish your feed ramp and chamber.
Good full review
How do you like it now and which one is the best to buy?
I LOVE my G2A Custom edition - ua-cam.com/video/3Na4gULQWdg/v-deo.html
As far as buying a new run-of-the-mill one, I would go with the basic Gen 2.
That’s bad ass wish I had both to do that
I would love to own that slide!!!!
Good review.
They have these new inventions out, they're called fingernail clippers.
He could always paint em lol
RB Brown LOL!
The pin was a pain to get off. I had some very minor finish wear (honestly not even sure if thats what it is from) because of it. Ended up having to put a cloth over it and really trying to pry it off.

Ironically I won't be using the hogue grip because I started having magazine insertion issues with it.
As nice as it looks out of the box. It's a shooter not a looker.
Right on, thanks for sharing your experience!
If you like the trigger on the custom and the slide on the gold one why don't you just put gold slide on the custom frame ?
+Prepare2Survive . . . Great idea ;D
+Glory2America swap and video the out come .. if work sell the other one ..best of both worlds ..
Nice in depth study dude…You know your shit.
Thanks you !!
Lol the 10th anniversary edition is exactly what you made out of both additions. Maybe they saw your video LOL. Check it out
I don't trust that old style extractor though. They changed, the design of the extractor for a reason and I've seen videos of the original design with rusty crud and a broken spring that made it cease to function.

Where can I purchase the gold slide?
Sweet!

Wouldn't there be some way to get an upper assembly without the tower sights?
Try the online auction sites, something like that you have to just keep checking... Also, you could call Ruger or one of their distributors (start with your local Ruger seller), and I'm willing to bet that they would do that for you. Although you'll likely have to pay a premium for it.

Glory2America Considering it now seems to have attached itself to a video I watched 4 weeks ago... yeah, I'd wager. Gotta love youtube...
I'm suprised the G2 slides sights are too large for you. I feel they are a good middle ground between the G1 and the Custom.
I can tolerate them, but the 1st gen sights are, to me, what the LCP is all about :)
My lcp custom takedown pin is just as hard as your's to take out. Every time I remove it, i'm afraid ill scratch the slide.
Btw, thats a beautiful frankenstein lcp.
That is the ultimate ruger
i have a lcp blue can i change the trigger to the custom red trigger on this gun
Yeah they cost about 40 bucks just google Lcp trigger.
What about the 2nd gen?
Gen-2 is better than the custom in my opinion!
turbo 906 same trigger then the custom a lot of people don't no that minus the red trigger
can u swap the original custom slide with the custom frame?
Lol I guess I shoulda watched the rest of the video first.. great minds think alike haha it's 1am give me a break on this one
+Gun Slinger .... lol no prob, thanks for commenting!
i would buy that , what u put together
It's great.
does that gun you made have a safety?
Jeff Thomas ok, thanks for the answer, I wasn't sure what that indentation is above his thumb. on the right side. that you can see on the video thumbnail. I wish it did have a safety where you didn't need a pocket holster. then it looks like a perfect small gun. in my opinion.
still looks like a handy gun with a pocket holster.
Did You Get The Lcp 2?
99 roses is awesome
Nice Rugerstein, bro 😁
Cool
Awesome !! Yes, both the Custom LCP and Gen 2 LCP have the same trigger geometry. Thanks for sharing your thoughts !!
I am looking for a Gen2 and can not find one does anyone know of any out there?

kygent508 did you find a gem 2
Nice gun
I just picked up a 2 gen George this one I like...lol
The new one is a Custom issue. The older one is a second generation LCP, not first. The pre-2013 issue is the first generation. What you have is a 2013-up generation.
I heard people getting rid of their LCP but I find no reason why.
Good idea but I have a problem I sold my old one with the low profile sights, your a little late with the good advice.....lol...good video....
+Danny Di . . . lol Thanks Danny!! Maybe you can find someone with a low-pro slide who might be interested in swapping? I bet there's alot of folks who would rather have the new slide with big sights. . .
+Glory2America u still got the lc9.....
+Danny Di . . . Actually just sold my last LC9 and I already miss it !!! It went to a good friend so I can still shoot it sometimes, lol.
+Glory2America I see a Lc9- s in your future...
+Danny Di . . . lol, you a mind reader, bro? I was just thinking about getting an LC9s

Gen 1 all day I carry everywhere saved me 2wice
