Agreed! It was so good that I wish there was a studio version of it. Deftones have quite the great collection of cover songs that are just amazing. Even songs that I didn’t really care for the original. The Deftones managed to not only give this cover an added “darker” texture to an already beautifully dark song but did so while using their distorted guitars to make it heavier without making it sound silly or forced. In my opinion, it is an example of a “perfect” cover in where the original song is portrayed respectfully and the band covering them was able to put their accent into it as well, without taking any of the magic that made the original so amazing.
The Cure is unquestionably the top 10 essential rock band ever. Robert Smith is amazing but it's a total honor to have Chino sing your songs. Top 5 best singers ever. 🤣
The AFI cover is one of my favorites but they couldn't have picked a better song for Deftones to cover. They absolutely captured the atmosphere of that song and nailed it.
The Cure", e nel sottofondo c'erano le canzoni di Lullaby e Close to Me.
37:55 FUN FACT: The Cure did write and perform the intro of the Kids show "The Dragon Hunters" and "Taking Off" is the "The Cure" Version of that Intro 😄
Kinda weird, watching The Cure watch other people perform their songs.... Having said that - I liked the AFI version of Just like Heaven. Robert Smith has such a way of working the crowd that is very unique.
Interesting choice of bands. Deftones definitely saved the night with their version of "If only tonight we could sleep". It was the oe song of he evening that had such depth and emotion in it.
It’s funny you mentioned Manson, because usually I’m fine with him. He puts on……err USED TO put on a great live performance for his first 4 albums (then completely lost control of his drug use, lost his voice and live shows became cringe). But he really irked me as the presenter. Very campy & trying way too hard to be…. Idk what he’s trying to be but it was painful to watch. It’s upsetting that this show wasn’t better because there are so many bands that could have done Justice to the Cure’s music. I mean just off the top of my head: Peter Murphy and/or Bauhaus, Peter Hook, New Order, Trent Reznor, Tori Amos, Placebo, Dresden Dolls, PJ Harvey, James Addiction, Exho and the Bunnymen, David Bowie, etc. I get what MTV did though. First I get that they wanted bands from today that were inspired by the Cure, but as per usual MTV chose commercialism over quality and found bands that were inspired by the Cure yes, BUT were for the most part chosen for either the record labels pushing for a bands exposure and also bands that were popular to a younger crowd, that let’s be honest…. Don’t really know who the Cure were. They chose the wrong target audience as the majority of people who watched this were either the old skool older people and a small group of new generation fans. This could have been so much better. Though I’ll also giver credit to AFI, as they did a good version and did them justice.
Blown away by AFIs cvr of Just like Heaven. Singer's persona reminds me of Pete Steele (Carnivore) and Baron Misuraca/ old bass player fm (Sheer Terror).
Deftones were the only meaningful cover. They captured the feel, they made something with the song. They added something to it but kept it respectful. You could feel the vibe in the crowd was so different. Not overly freaky. Just feeling it suspended in melancholy. Like closing your eyes and floating.
nah pretty sure he praised the performance-- I think I read in an interview that he appreciated how they reinvented the song in their style instead of doing a copycat type of performance.
There are some definate slurrrrs in his speach. But, the VO sections are fabulous! Ihave never heard him speak with that kind if intonation before - i thought it was Fox Mulder for a sec. Defo drunk [and pos high] at the live recording, but entertaining none the less.
Now they’re actually going to perform themselves about time lol I don’t mind Robert smith’s voice actually that’s because I heard him sing with blink-182 so
Defines is the only decent cover. This was painful to watch. Marilyn is incredibly flamboyant and garish making it more about him while it’s intended to be a tribute. This over emphasis on gloom and darkness is such a lazy surface take. The Cure write about emotions and experiences we all go through. This focus on pain and sadness doom and gloom is a disservice to the band. We all go through these very human emotions, I guess when someone has the guts to write about and perform it it stands out. The production feels like it was done by a placebo group of ADHD patients. It’s a shame their musicianship the arrangements production and composition of the Cure’s sound and their albums is barely mentioned.
Marilyn just had to make it all about himself and his stupid antics and Blink 182? Cmon man! and I bet the band was soooo creeped out when MM did that crawling obsession skit bs.. way to mess up a great chance to actually respect the band 🤮 MTV should have been cancelled after the 80s anyhow
My god, the Deftones MURDERED that song! That was the best cover of the night for sure. Robert looked so happy :D

@@thespyinthecab7538they have the cover up on streaming, although I’m not sure if it’s the same recording or a studio one
OMG!
I kind of never liked AFI, but their version of Just like Heaven is like HEAVEN
They totally nailed it
Me too!!!
The Cure is unquestionably the top 10 essential rock band ever. Robert Smith is amazing but it's a total honor to have Chino sing your songs. Top 5 best singers ever. 🤣
Okay, wait. Manson, Chester, AFI, Deftones and (of course) The Cure all in one video...am I in heaven?
Yes you are!!
It's Just Like Heaven yes
Exactly 💯
I could add Tool...
No you are just stupid
The Deftones gave me chills. One love for Chi Cheng ❤️
The AFI cover is one of my favorites but they couldn't have picked a better song for Deftones to cover. They absolutely captured the atmosphere of that song and nailed it.

I like how Robert Smith said Cure fans are passionate, I agree, deep words mean something ,a connection
Hearing Chester speak about the Cure hits different. Miss him 💔
That blink cover tho!! Need a studio recording of that :’)
ya but Tom played like shit at first lol. Classic Tom
MTV will never be like this ever again
Placebo, Darren Hayes, John Frusciante, Brandon Flowers… so many greats love The Cure because they are unique, talented and amazing!

I have watched the AFI cover of JLH and it's got to be one of the best covers of all time.
Deftones cover is so cool ♥ i love it
Great program. Thank you for posting. It's priceless to see Ro ert's face while being impersonated
The Blink-182 version is perfect to my taste, I love that song
At first I thought bad song choice for that band but then by the end I was blown away. Mad respect for blink 182
That deftones tho😭😭❤️🔥
For real. They murdered that shit.
@@jrmeceleb no doubt🖤🖤🖤deftones has a compilation album of covers they’ve done!!! The one they did here is on there w a bunch of other bangers lol 👻

Marilyn Manson and Robert Smith two of my favourite goth musicians of all time.
Not a bad cover the deaf tones did there their instrumental impressed me
AFI doing Just like Heaven was amazing, but their cover of The Hanging Gardens off of the A Fire Inside EP is insanely good
U can tell RS and The Cure were very pleased w/their cover.

Legendary mtv episode, wow
wow THANK you for posting this. I love The Cure
AFI 😮 amazing
Seeing Manson and Robert being friends warms my heart.
I read this whole thing as Manson doing the job he was paid for and Smith being embarrassed but hey, who knows
Manson huge influence
All I saw was Manson being an enormous douche. What a pretentious wanker. Couldn't be more different to Robert.
@@oliviernaud7529 Wait... what?
@@oliviernaud7529 same. I wasnt a fan of Manson being the host. But have been a cure fan since 3 Imaginary Boys.
this is awesome i love the cure 🦆
the cure is the best band 🦔
Estoy viejo...jajaja
Yo también
AFI, Just Like Heaven 🤯🤯🤯🤯
I know Robert hates pomp and circumstance. But I know this makes him so proud too.
Mi parte favorita la cara de Robert 24:21
AFi. Unfucking believable. Robert Smith was so impressed.
Thank you!
I can only imagine how uncomfortable this big production made Robert and the lads...
Nessuno come Robert....❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
shouldve put a jumpscare warning everytime manson was onscreen
I only replay came for blink-182’s cover of letter to Elise lol 😂 love how Marilyn Manson introduced them and Robert smith’s reaction is brilliant
Omg! Manson and Smith in the same video! I’m not sure what to do with myself
Wow deftones
The cure is amazing Robert Smith Is may chilling Angel Love you cure Asta mi finallllllll
Who's here is 2023
The should have let interpol cover boys don’t cry
Wasn't into them. I was a metal head but I liked there look . It reminded me of Rocky Horror
Robert Smith has that “why are we here?” look
AFI, hands down!
0:49-1:09 The Lovecats, A Forest, Wrong Number, ???, The Caterpillar, ???
34:50 how did he do that?!?!?
im screaaaming lmao
This ones for you #heff #beme
Ohhh LOSTPROPHETS in this video
I think Johnathon Davis from Korn would have been a better host.
Does anybody know whats the name of the song?? 0:50
Sadly no
Robert smith states the obvious all musicians are inspired by each other so does copyright really exist unless you steal their music
Thumbnail would make a great publicity pic for a Satanic Horror movie 😂
Marilyn Manson makes a great host
Blink e deftones i migliori
trying so hard to flip off marilyn, but not any of the members is the quickest muscle movement I've ever done

Hollywood are u listening? Get Robert Pattinson to play Robert and get on it!
pixies and the cure are over the top, special thanks to Violent Femmes, Bauhaus, Eccos & the.. , Stone Roses..
Robert Smith dying inside when blink covered his song was a memorable moment. Robert was fucking stunned by AFi, wow. you could see that reaction.
Then why he smiled?
nah pretty sure he praised the performance-- I think I read in an interview that he appreciated how they reinvented the song in their style instead of doing a copycat type of performance.
😎👍💕🎼
We all know that Robert was seriously contemplating suicide from this garbage until Deftones arrived and finally gave a true tribute to The Cure.
Oh shut the fuck up. AFI's cover was great as was Blink's
I thought AFI did amazing and judging from Robert's expression he did also. The other bands were absolute trash covers tho.
Blinks was the best, all the other sucked
Was Manson drunk? He sure seemed like it. He'd have been a decent host if he'd have laid off the sauce.
