The Cure: TOP 5 HIDDEN GEMS From Robert Smith and Co | Pop Fix | Professor of Rock

- Опубліковано 17 лис 2020
- The Cure is one of the greatest bands in the history of music. They are exquisitely unique and frankly unrepeatable. Though Robert Smith and company have influenced scores of bands that have followed they have created music that is so intensely magical and so deliciously soul invigorating it’s almost impossible to try and define it I’m sure that my story with this band is no different than your own. They were one of the musical institutions that saved me in the youthful coming of age period of deep confusion and overpowering despair that is high school. Robert Smith is one of the most gifted poets and singers of any era going back centuries. I will spend many more hours in the future, celebrating their deep and expansive collection of songs and albums but today I focus on 5 hidden Gems, from some of their greatest albums like Disintegration, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, and The Head on the Door, also non singles, album tracks, b sides, the Cure has so many that are better than their hits and I want to cover 5 today that you should either discover or re visit as they are life changing and massively essential. Let’s get into it.

When someone says...”I don’t like the Cure”
I don’t like them.
Then you'll hate my toxic friend
So true! Anyone that steps foot in my car is absolutely forbiden to say a bad word about them and my girlfriend is well aware that it's a no go zone :D :D
I don't like people who don't like people who don't like the Cure. Jk it was just fun to type this.
I hate when people say the cures a "one hit wonder"
@@galowinslow4114 which one do they consider their one hit? Lovesong? Friday I'm In Love? Close To Me? Boys Don't Cry? Just Like Heaven? Inbetween Days? Lullaby? The Lovecats? Pictures Of You? Why Can't I Be You?
Disintegration's liner notes read: "this album has been mixed to be played loud, so turn it up." Listening on headphones is truly a spiritual experience
Agreed.
there music is like something from another dimension of rock, and yes, spiritual too
Maybe that is the last album before the Loudness War started in the nineties. It REALLY has to be turned up to experience the great stereo sound and dynamics at full.
Not just spiritual but the unique and worldly soundscapes his songs have had. Robert doesn't get enough appreciation for the latter whether it's the oriental Kyoto, Latin flavor of The Blood and Last Dance and the mideastern vibe of Drowning Man.
As i have read this,..i thought it is joke,...cuz couldnt believe that they realy printed it,..
So did they really mixed the album to be played loud??
Not only is Robert Smith a musical genius, but an absolute humble gentleman. !!
Being a huge Cure fan, I ran out and bought the album 'Disintegration' the day it came out. I put the record on the turntable and the opening notes of "Plainsong" blasted out of my speakers and forever changed my perception of how beautiful music could be. I remember it was a warm day in spring and as I sat on my bed with the window open and the fresh air wafted in, I felt at peace with the world.
Plainsong isn't just my favorite Cure song; it's my favorite song...period.
Deep, powerful and drills into your soul!
“From The Edge of The Deep Green Sea”from Wish
YES!
@@jamescallis4532 Hahahaha!!!! I'm laughing because as soon as I saw "From the Edge . . ." I thought "YES!", and you beat me by 7 minutes!! LOL!!
@@Skeezer66 Great taste tastes alike. Great fucking song....spoke to me back in the day although I had been into Cure from the beginning as I am old. : )
@@jamescallis4532 I'm 54 so you can't be that much older, lol!
@@Skeezer66 Haaaa....I'm May 1966, 54 years old...still going to shows....at least before shitty virus and politicians. Saw Tool x2 just before the dookie hit the fan. Nice to meet ya...
A night like this. The passion in Roberts voice when he belts out "I'm coming to find you if it takes me all night". I could listen to that song every day for the rest of my life.
I could have picked just about anything off "The Head On The Door". What an astounding range of musical styles, almost all done to perfection.
A Night LIke This is my favourite Cure song ever.
Yes!
That’s a very special song to me too my ex shared that song when she had to leave to another state. It’s such a good song
The sax at the end is a nice touch too, great tune
'Prayers for Rain' followed by 'Same Deep Water as You' followed by 'Disintegration' is THE best song sequence/order on any album.
Just add "Homesick" and "Untitled" which just make everything perfect 🙂
@@andyh444 This.
I used to put that vinyl on to fall to sleep to. It was always guaranteed to rock me gently to sleep when I was deeply troubled.
Maaaan I've been saying that yeaaars
Fascination Street right before them too. The entire second half of that album fits so perfectly together.
Robert Smith is a true Romantic. A true poet
Dude, acknowledging The Cure as one of the greatest bands ever...now you got my respect.
Adam loves 80s and 90s music. The Cure is the 80s and 90s.
@@deadinthewater218 The Cure is the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s...and going!

It's so wonderful to connect with others that know that Robert Smith is one of the best Lyricists ever!!
He is a poet, yes.
Bigfoot, and the Cure. Wow! Me too ♥ from Louisville, Ky
He’s an incredible musician and artist. The music he composes is amazing. I love listening to the cure on my headphones to pick apart each instrument and then to hear it blend together. It’s magical sometimes ❤
100% agree, these are my people that get it! :)
Best lyricist but also best songwriter completely. Let's not forget that he writes most of the music, plays lead guitar on most, plays bass (even plays 6-string bass as a guitar sometimes), keyboards. He is the singular greatest and most important musician of modern music (ie music once lyrics were added).
No one, no team of people, compate to him.
He's like the Highlander. There can be only one lol.
As a young person, barely turned 13, I love the cure from the bottom of my heart and I'm so grateful that my father showed me their music.
So cool. Thank you Misha's Dad 🙏🏻 I'm really pleased he showed you this.
@@michaelgask I'm happy too, without him I wouldn't find the things I like now
your dad gave you priceless inheritance, must be proud to be his son
@@christianamaya6272 haha, definitely agree
You're lucky
Push from "The Head on the Door" is my all-time favorite Cure song!
its so good!
I have loved The Cure for 37 years. It's great to know someone else loves "Push" as much as much as I do.
The Cure, as a teenager, let me imagine the heartache of middle-age. Now, at 50, it brings me back to that moment.
Never been a fan of the Cure. I get the concepts for the music. Just not my cup of tea. However still gave a thumbs up for the video. Good info.
I am 48 and I SOOOO understand exactly what you mean
They hold up really well, too - I'm 25 and adore them
When I told a friend recently (Both in our mid 50s) that the Cure were a favorite band of mine, he just said they were depressing & gloomy, my reply was 'Lovecats', 'In Between Days', Friday I'm In Love', 'The Caterpillar', DEPRESSING & GLOOMY!!! his answer was no their not gloomy... A lot of people really do not like the image...
ur old
I feel so privileged that I got to grow up listening to Robert🥰 He shaped my life
What a fabulous band. Love them for almost 40 years. Love them,!
"Disintegration" is a timeless masterpiece. For me the best album ever...
I whole heartedly agree with all these. My 5 Hidden Gems - Other Voices - Charlotte Sometimes - This Twilight Garden - Open - Like Cockatoos
Ooh, thanks for reminding me about Charlotte Sometimes. That one is going into rotation on my Spotify playlist.
@@SynthMusicWorld Love the song so much, I named my daughter Charlotte.
@@curefanatic1821 that's pretty cool!
Great collection of 5! Like cockatoos makes me giddy
@@curefanatic1821 Nice! We had a cat that I named Charlotte Sometimes. The vet would always ask "What is she the rest of the time?" Dad joke alert.
#5 01:45 Six Different Ways
#4 04:44 The Same Deep Water As You
#3 08:03 The Perfect Girl
#2 11:12 Harold And Joe
#1 14:41 Plainsong
I remember the first time I listened to Disintegration and heard the opening bars of Plainsong. I got shivers down my spine. I knew straight away the LP was going to be epic. The man is a genius and also Simon Gallup is as important to The Cure's sound, as Peter Hook is to New Order's.
Ahh Plainsong I share your love of this song. It’s unspeakably beautiful
5 gems that did not become singles:
- All Cats Are Grey
- Lament
- Kyoto Song
- How Beautiful You Are
- All I Want
And 5 gems that never even made it to albums:
- The Exploding Boy
- Chain Of Flowers
- Sugar Girl
- 2 Late
- That Twilight Garden
Much better choices.
@bobbiebob575 bob mine are siamese twins, snow in summer, your god is fear, where the birds always sing, and last dance (rs home instrumental demo)
I have to say All Cats Are Grey is one of my all time favorite songs - also the reason I now own a grey cat. Her name is Morticia and she’s the bestest girl and she knows it.
Lament is sooooo good
Yeah, this is a much better list. I'd add 'Temptation' to the list of songs that should have been on an album.
Push, Disintegration, Burn, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, A Letter to Elise
My favorites
I feel like Burn gets forgotten because it was outside of their heyday, and it was made for a movie soundtrack and not on one of their albums. The Crow soundtrack was awesome period, but this song was my favorite on it.
@@Starlesslight : ¡ Burn ! Absolutely. A gloriously Gothic tune without a doubt.
Yeah, "Push" ! That one's GREAT !
I was never *overly* moved by Burn... until I saw them perform it live. That song is INCREDIBLE live.
I'm a rabid avid fan of the cure for 35 years since I heard my favorite song of theirs, boys don't cry,and in between days God blessed 👍😊
Plainsong is epic! The build in the beginning. The sound of the chimes. "It's just the way I smile she said" this song defines the Cure. Dark with a hint of light.
Absolutely agree it’s just the way I smile, she said - god I’ve heard it a thousand times and I always wait for it with such anticipation.
Plainsong still gets me. We saw them in 1989 for the Prayer tour at Shoreline. They opened with Plainsong and I still get shivers thinking about how that made me feel to hear the windchimes and the opening chords. Interestingly enough, they also played The Perfect Girl at that show.
Hidden gems: To the sky, Secrets, To wish impossible things, Just one kiss, A chain of flowers....
Oh how I wish I could've seen that exact show.
@@ProfessorofRock i wish i could have seen the trilogy Show,...that was unbelievable, just imagine,..u know what comes next,...u listen to a short term effect,..and then,..next highlight,..i when DISINTEGRATION starts,.u listen to closedown,.and u know in a bunch of minutes u will listen to same deep water as you,....ahhhhhh fabulous
I once stood front and center, just a few feet away from Robert, as the band performed “Plainsong” to open their amazing concert. That was truly one of the greatest nights of my life...✨
I too had that joy once in San Diego. I love it when chimes start and then music explodes
It was the best opening song in any show I've seen. Saw them front row in Cleveland 1992.
Me too. More than once in fact. Such an incredible way to start a concert!!
I think Plainsong could be used for the corination of a king, a wedding, or a funeral march. It's the happiest saddest song ever.
I was lucky enough to be front and center several times, once during the Swing Tour in 1996 in Fairfax VA, and they opened with Plainsong. It was the first time they played it since 1990, I think I almost teared up when I heard "The Bells". I was also front and center at a small club in NYC 1997 on halloween night and Robert was so close I could have reached out and touched his guitar. It was just a wall between the band and crow, no gap for security.
Finally, the true recognition The Cure deserves. They are one of my favorite bands and yes, Robert Smith is a gift to humanity.
Even the Top 5 Cure Albums wouldn't be enough to cover what you need to hear!!! Pure genius.
I have that T-shirt too. It’s 30 years old and I still wear it. It hasn’t disintegrated, oddly enough.
Haha
Can't argue with these selections.. adding A Strange Day
A Strange Day is the best song of all time.
Eek! I think I might need to have my eyes checked! I had read "skeletons" at first, probably also because of the skull image in the corner of my left eye x-))
I was anticipating that A Strange Day would have been included, too.
MY HEART. A Strange Day. Glorious. At 17, I wanted my boyfriend’s band to cover it...and they tried...and it was too hard for them to learn. (I was a writer and actor, not a musician.)
That's my favorite Cure song!!I loved it since I first heard it at 16 yrs old
Great video! Fan of almost 40 years here as well! Favorite band all time. If I may.. my 5 that come to mind are:
Same deep water as you
This twilight garden
Trust
A Night Like This
Carnage Visors
Harold and Joe and the Mixed Up A Forest remix are honestly my two favorite Cure songs. To round out a top 5 I would also say Burn, Disintegration, and Push. My gawd Push is such an explosion of goth joy. Anyway, I was thrilled when you not only mentioned both of my favorite songs but put Harold and Joe in the list. It is unlike any other Cure song, yet unmistakably a Cure song, just like you mentioned. The A Forest remix sounds like it's haunted, like every time you play it a purple ghost will come out of your speakers and scare you.
Hard to pick only 5 “BEST” Cure songs. They’re all incredible.
These are hidden gems not necessarily the best. Although Plainsong is up there for me.
He did not list his top 5 ... It was his top hidden ones.
There are definitely more hidden gems, but the amazing thing is that just about every song The Cure recorded from their first album, all the way up to Wish, are AMAZING songs.
The Cure mastered the art of building an indelible melancholic atmosphere with Disintegration. I remember listening to this in my dorm late at night after my girlfriend and I had broken up. I played Pictures of You over and over until her face slipped away quietly.
"If only I thought of the right words, I could've held onto your heart..." Genius, brilliant, and timeless.
Good episode.
Rough night. Some pains scar one's soul. The Cure expressed that for me.
Good stuff... I personally prefer Last Dance as a breakup song
@@vsander09 Absolutely. a woman now standing where once

I’m 51, my First Album was,
The Top!
I felt like Scotty beamed me Up, to a whole other Dimension! It was roughly 7th grade, so 12 years old, and my mind was blown! That Boy kept giving me Cure Albums. It was 1984.
Led Zeppelin was my Musical MUSE, for Genius level, Journey too, but this Cure band,
Holy Shit Snikeys, did I fall hard in the Alternative Music channels, soon after, however, they’re all pretty Great,
I just knew, this is a Once in a Lifetime kinda Band, Song Writer, music writer, producer, its on the Teeter of Perfect! Robert Smith’s voice can comfort me in seconds! The Cure is my favorite band. I don't think any of your picks will be wrong in any way.
Edit: You are really good at expressing your thoughts of these songs. I love it, truly.
In my opinion their is no such thing as a bad or ok cure song. I'm 50 yrs old when I was a kid and still today the Cure had and always will have great influence in my life. GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME!!!
“The Exploding Boy” B-side to “Inbetween Days”. Priceless
My #1 hidden gem
Yes! Great song!
El mejor lado B de The Cure
Magnifique
Came here to say that. And a Few Hours After This. My heart explodes.
“All cats are Grey”...I love the list, this song should be added as the 6th gem!
Same.
“Like cockatoos”, “Push”, “M”, “The empty world”, “A few hours after this”....... so many my god!
Push and A Few Hours After This top my list
"Same Deep Water as You" has always been a favourite of mine. It's absolutely haunting. I love it !
I used to listen to it on repeat.
yesss
It's a phenomenal song.
The B-sides from the Wish Album are definitely hidden gems! This Twilight Garden, The Big Hand, Play and Halo are all worthy of being A-side album tracks!
Yeah, lot's of artists would love to have compose these kind of songs in one of their albums, and The cure is so incredible that it's on b-sides! The Cure is the best band ever.
The Cure has been my absolute favorite band since the 80s. So many different sounds and range of styles.
Why Can't I Be You to Lullaby to Plainsong to Watching Me Fall and everything imaginable in between.
Plainsong is one of my all time favorite 20 songs period. I have turned off all the lights and just laid on my couch and listened to this song...sober...and been transformed.
My personal list of life changing Cure songs:
1. Bare - Every single word is pure poetry.
2. Charlotte Sometimes (from Paris) - The song is only enhanced when you learn it's based on (and uses lyrics from) an incredible book of the same name. Read the book!
3. From The Edge of The Deep Green Sea - Heart wrenching vocals.
4. The Kiss - This one for the instrumentation. It kicks you in the gut, particularly if your prior experience with the Cure is just the slower more lyrically mature songs.
5. Untitled - I love that this song doesn't have a title. It's such a tight package of music and lyrics and yet they couldn't settle on a name, really powerful song.
Bonus:
These songs have a great story to tell:
1. There Is No If...
2. A Letter To Elise
3. Strange Attraction
4. Open
5. Just Like Heaven - I know it's poppy but the ending lyrics where he realizes it's all been a dream are so heart wrenching.
LET HIM COOK
The Head on the Door is my favorite Cure album, and Six Different Ways is one of my favorites. I could listen to that album endlessly.
5. Killing an Arab (add The Drowning Man if KAA is too well known)
4. A Short Term Effect
3. Play for The Day
2. The Hanging Garden
1. The Holy Hour.
It's Play for Today.
*PICTURES of YOU- masterful tear jerker*
"Plainsong" is magnificent. The very first time I listened to it I almost cry. How powerful musical expression on it and how lush it sounds. Robert's voice was so impressive there... Also I loved "Closedown". Fantastic album.
Here’s my list: A Strange Day, Shake Dog Shake, Piggy in the Middle, A Forest, Sinking, The Funeral Party, In Your House
Not sure you could call 'A Forest' a hidden gem but definitely still a fantastic song
Piggy In The MIRROR? 👍🏻
@@satiricalhaz-homeofbanter4371 it’s a valid point, but a lot of people barely know The Cure at all, and A Forest was never a hit in the US.

@bri Pornography, Cloudberry, Before Three, Cold Colours, Lament

1-underneath the stars
2-a few hours after this
3- untitled
4-sinking
5-a letter to Elise
Robert Smith reminds me a lot of Prince because they basically can do ANYTHING musically
Like he said himself: As long as his voice is in a song, it's a Cure song :-)
Big up the Purple Yoda and Robert Smith!
I believe he wrote the Kyoto song bc he found an instrument that he actually couldn't figure out how to play while he was there. It was in their bio "Ten Imaginary Years" (someone can correct me if Im wrong but I think it was this song)
@@andrewlowden322 - That's a good book, too! Many great photos in there! :-)
@@andrewlowden322 I have always loved Kyoto Song... Strange to think that when I was young in the 80's I never dreamed I would live there for 10 years.
Greetings from Kobe.
I could hear you talk about The Cure forever and I would never get bored of it.
Seeing you put Plainsong on the first place makes me so happy, yet feels like a safe choice. Plainsong is such a full song, and as you've noted, creates such a beautiful environment with Pictures of You and Closedown.
The Cure's body of work is full of amazing sounds, that evade me some days, because I'm focusing on something else, but they always make their way to your heart. One of the greatest bands in the history, and I'm super happy to have seen them live!
The entire Disintegration album is the best album ever made. imo
My absolute favourite cure song - from one of the greatest albums of all time.
Plainsong is mankind's finest achievement
Same . . . and me too, it was the best concert I have ever been to ( and there have been many)
I think identifying a song as "safe" assures the rest of us that the choice was solid. Anything else is debatable.
Yep! The Cure got me through my turbulent adolescence and beyond... I'm revisiting them as I'm on the other side of the hormonal rollercoaster - and still cathartic and as beautiful as ever
Absolutely loved this video.
I should add "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" to the honourable mentions 🙂
I'm so glad I discovered The Cure this year. I heard Disintegration and have slowly been working my way through the albums from the start. They're truly magical, I can't wait until their next release comes out.
I can't even fathom how crazy it must be finding them with such a massive discography! I'm a looooong time fan and I'm jealous you have so much stuff to discover. New albums don't come often. Enjoy what's out there! 👍
It's been over 10 years ago and I am still blown away with Disintegration. The flip side of the album has really grown on me.
@@jetjaguar72 It’s both daunting and exciting! I’ve listened to Disintegration, Three Imaginary Boys and Seventeen Seconds so far.
From what I’ve seen online, everything between Faith and Wish is all meant to be excellent so I can’t wait to get to it all.
I’m limiting myself to an album a week right now just in general so I don’t get burned out, plus I don’t want to rush through them as well as everything else I’m finding but it’s like another world.

@@michaell6807 oh hell yes! Great song great call!
If I’d ever been given a mix tape by a guy with all those bands on it, it would have been instant love.
Thank you for including The Same Deep Water As You. On an emotional record, that was the most emotional song. It's beautiful, it's dark, it's tragic--it's everything that makes The Cure... The Cure. It's a song that I can't imagine coming from any other group.
Scared as You - one of the most beautiful overlooked tracks, Smith got so emotional from it that he cried while recording it.
Trust and to wish impossible things are some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Yes, they are really beautiful... I thought at least one of them might be chosen here, as they are quite non-Cure like.
Glad he included The Perfect Girl. My favorite song on Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. Loved it the moment I heard it the summer of 1987.
My dad introduced me to The Cure back when I was 12 or 13. I wasn't really popular in school and had to endure quite some bullying due to a tic disorder I have (and to be frank, also due to the fact that I was just a really strange child). Stuff also wasn't really going well at home and then puberty hit me and I think we can all agree that puberty was a horrid time. What The Cure, especially Robert Smith, made me realize is that it's ok to be a bit strange. I still go to school with the same people who bullied me, but now I walk with my head held high. The Cure spoke and still speak to me with their music and their lyrics, they accompanied me for years and they will forever have a very special place in my heart. I think they were a big part of me finding my personality (as well as my style) without trying to change who I am.
I have found one of my dearest friends through The Cure's online fandom and we have talked almost every day for the past 2 years. I'm almost 18 now and will see my favorite band of all time live very soon. And I am so excited, you can't imagine.
This video made my day! Thank you so much, Professor! 😃❤️🎶

I think you did a great job describing how the Cure songs feel. As a fellow Gen X, I get where you're coming from and your mix tape story hits home with me.
Thanks for bringing back some great memories!! So much of the Cure's music is tied up in memories of youth. I really appreciate this!! As an old Cure fan, if we're talking about B-sides & rarities, my favourite two are "Push" from Head On The Door, and "Scared As You" from the Wish era. Much love, keep doing what you do :)
I’m so surprised that Burn didn’t make the list. There is nothing else like that song and it’s my favorite from The Cure.
My favorite song by the cure of all time
yes
Did you hear the recent live versions they do of it? I think it sounds better than the studio one. It's not as ghostly as the studio version but it sounds fuller and the lyrics have been tightened up a bit:
ua-cam.com/video/3fSPMezUj9Q/v-deo.html
Absolutely phenomenal song. Gets overlooked so often because bit wasn't on an official Cure album which is tragic as its an amazing piece of music.
prolly cos' the title of the video is hidden gems, not singles, promos etc.
Huge Cure fan here. Very hard to narrow it down to just 5. Great video, can never get enough Cure!
JFYI, The Kiss would be on my list. One of the most unique and angry songs in their collection.
Dude, the simplicity of that riff Porl plays in the intro of The Kiss alone conveys so much what the song will become...then when he just starts going off for 3 minutes: dang! Its so intense of a track that we need that resolution at the end where he stops and its just Roger holding that chord (i believe it shifts from minor to major at that chord) like we needed the sun to rise at the end of Night on Bald Mountain in Fantasia!
And of course that gives us safe passage to the light and joyful track Catch, mentioned in the video here by Prof o Rock!
The Kiss is The Cures masterpiece to me. Not to say others are not close, but this always blows my socks off hahaha
Plainsong and Closedown are my favorite The Cure songs of all time! They get me very emotional and puts me into a sad happy trance
Thank you so much for this. The Cure is just hands down the most amazing band ever. I listen to them and realize their music has filled most of my life. Robert Smith is the closest thing on this earth as to what Heaven must be like. I remember fist hearing him sing and thinking this is love . This is what love sounds like and feels like. Pure beauty.
I am a huge fan of the Cure, my 5 top songs are: Untitled, Kyoto Song, How beautiful you are, A letter to Elise, A forest.
I can hear it again, and again, and again and again...
I was hoping someone would point out Untitled...a devastating gem
How Beautiful You Are is such a great song that gets stuck in your head for days. It's almost like you've been transported to Paris itself.
Kyoto Song is a must
Every time I hear Robert Palmer on the radio, I shout out (in my best Robert Smith accent), "Fuck Robert Palmer, fuck rock and roll!"
My top 5
1) Cold
2) Closedown
3) Fight
4) This Twilight Garden
5) Open
🎶Going under so slow
Dressing up to kiss
Dressing up to touch all this🎵
Dressing up by The Cure very underrated, Very good for the ears and brain.
The Cure - Is a open floodgate of emotion and power, by FAR my favorite band of all time. Favorite song, Just like heaven.
And here's my list: 10.15 Saturday Night, Secrets, Shake Dog Shake, The Exploding Boy and If Only Tonight We Could Sleep.
I'm so glad that you mentioned Harold & Joe! One of my fave Cure songs! Thanks!
BRAVO-------PlainSong at Sunrise is an incredible song|!!!!!
The Same Deep Water as You is and will always be my favorite Cure song. It's emotion and tragic and beautiful. It's immense in every way.
I remember my first time hearing Just Like Heaven on the radio at age fourteen... the DJ didn't come on afterwards to identify the song so I waited for months before I heard it again... the lyrics and intro and wistful hopelessness expressed were so beautiful and evocative that they became my favorite band, and I spent years hunting down their albums and constantly listening to them, trying to absorb the dense arrangements.
My top 5 underrated tracks -
1. Push
2. M
3. 2 Late
4. Dressing Up
5. Ms. Van Gogh
wistful hopelessness is a fantastic description!
Oh M! M! I forgot M!
Those were the days...
Still my favourite band of all time after 30 years.
Mine also !
Me too. Since mid-80s
SAME!!!
Love your passion for The Cure! I’ve always thought One More Time off of Kiss Me Kiss, Me Kiss, Me was a hidden gem!
Professor of Rock should have way more than 822K subscribers. The topics he discusses is very open to all genres. He should be called the professor of music to be very frank.
My most favorlte song from The Cure always changes from day to day, depending on my mood and “The Same Deep Water As You” has been one of them many days.
Also “A Forest” and “Never Enough” from “Mixed Up” are spot-on.
and “Plainsong”... no words to descibe it and its effect on me.
Robert Smith is such a great songwriter, he affects every emotion. He can write the most joyful music like in Just like heaven or Mint car or write melancholy tunes or songs that take us help us when we have no hope or are in despair. Suffice to say The cure helps me regulated every day.
My heart melted knowing you wrote a love note to a girl with The Cure lyrics on it... So sweet! Aws!!!!
Plainsong. Not only a "hidden" gem. One of the most beautiful, emotionally stirring & greatest songs ever released. Period.
I love the Cure. I saw them for the Disintegration tour and Wish. They are timeless.
Most of “join the dots” a box set of undiscovered gems is incredible...their cover of Depeche Mode is fantastic! Seriously all four discs have been on repeat in my car for a few months now, The Cure is one of those bands that you can always “discover”
I appreciate The Cure a lot more now than when I was a teenager and my brother had them on his walls at the same time I had Duran Duran on mine. I always liked their music but I appreciate it so much more now! Same with Robert Smith's voice! 🖤
I’ve always loved the line “ it’s so cold, cold like you were dead....then you smiled for a second”
So ambiguous, but chilly either way...
This was FANTASTIC! Maybe you give some screen time to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy and Cocteau Twins next? These proto goth artists seem on the verge of being completely forgotten...and it is breaking my heart.
So true.. soundtrack of my later teen years. Sooo many good songs.. ah memories 🖤😈
The Cocteaus will NEVER be forgotten
To the Sky, Plainsong, To Wish Impossible Things, Cold and The Last Day of Summer are my favorite underrated Cure songs
Yay, some love for "To Wish Impossible Things"!
To The Sky - I remember how hard it was to get a hold of that one back in the day...good list!
I don’t know what I would do without the cure they really changed my life
It is so nice to hear someone speak about The Cure with the same kind of passion, awe, and emotion as I do. The song that stands out in my mind, I'm not sure why, but Letter to Elise always gets me. Now I have a little cousin Elise, so the song starts playing in my head whenever I see her.
One of my favorite versions is the MTV Unplugged version with the little toy piano
I met The Cure a night driving back home while listening to Six Different Ways. I fell in love immediately. Nice selection!
"Plaingsong makes the heart burst with emotion": those are the exact words that describe how I feel every time I listen to the song.
When I found this I was ready to totally rip it apart but I found myself wanting to listen to more. nice job. I'm 51 and have followed The Cure even before they were The Cure and own everything they have ever done. Nice job fella, I'm going to follow you as you "Get-it".
Strange attraction is one of my fave deep cut, the story is amazingly sad and the music is just beautiful.
