    Welcome to Office Hours with Coach Madden
    In this episode we talk about how to throw a very effective slurve. I used to throw a slurve ball which other people called a slider so I call it a slider but technically I believe it to be more of a slurve. So if you ever hear me talking about my advanced sinker and slider training, I'm actually showing you a slurve. In this slurve ball tutorial I show you the slurve ball grip and how to throw a slurve ball. So if that's what you're trying to learn, watch this full video and understand how the magnus effect works and how to throw a very effective slurve pitch.

    My 14 year old son has been trying to learn a breaking pitch and he tried curveball and slider and couldnt get the desire break last week we were playing catch and i suggested to him to try a slurve grip and he got an awesome break from the very first few pitches he tried. now we ve been practicing that pitch for about a week and he’s totally loving how it breaks!!!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

    I use to pitch a slurve in high school 20 years ago. Biggest break I ever remember was the ball went from the shoulder of a right handed batter standing in the middle of the batters box and landed in the dirt exactly where a left handed batter standing in the middle of the box would have stood.

    ive been doing some reading and studying on the exact purpose of different pitches and variations of one pitch or the other, and ive come to realize that pitching is a lot like boxing in that you throw your hardest pitches to knock the batter out (as in strikeout) and your throw offspeed and breaking balls to disrupt the timing or get them to put their guard, so to speak, in the wrong place at the wrong time

    I used to throw a 4-seam fastball, a circle-change, and a slurve since I was 10 and if I was getting into a rut with two outs. I would toss a change, fastball, then kill the batter with a nasty slurve that would break from the top right, to the bottom left. My coach told me not to throw it or if I did, don't snap it. But I snapped my wrist and I never had any problems other maybe being a little sore. The soreness was probobly a result of just pitching alot.

    Love the video...I think the “snap” (which I also disagree with that description of throwing your curveball). I always have described my 12-6 curve as pulling the light bulb string down (but never snapping the wrist over with intentional down force). I also only used a 4 seam when running up and inner half of the batter.
    I used to utilize multiple arm slot variations for my main 3 pitches (2-seam/sinker; curveball, circle change) but never used a varying arm slot for my screwball.
    In addition to arm slots variations, I also played with finger pressure for the same pitches described above.
    I never made it past college level, so, as a former pro how do you view variations of arm slot, finger pressure to give greater effect to pitches, while also maintaining the appearance of similar delivery so that the batter is not tipped off?

    • @YouGoPro
      @YouGoPro  5 років тому +3

      Jonathan Morales I did like to use slightly different arm slots on different pitches but never got into altering grip pressure. It just didn’t feel right to me but I knew many guys who did. I don’t think hitters were able to pick up the slight difference in arm slot. Maybe they did, I just never noticed it.

    • @jmo82184
      @jmo82184 5 років тому +1

      YouGoProBaseball I love the quick reply. I guess I used grip pressure to help my control. As a lefty, I also had a lot of “tail” on my pitches so I would use grip pressure to maintain the Mariano Rivera cutter action on an inside fastball so the ball wouldn’t drift back over the middle of the plate into the sweet spot by accident. I found the pressure allowed the fastball to have slight horizontal movement to remove the ball from the hitter’s intended sweet spot as he is sweeping that particular plane he has already committed to.
      Also liked your 4 pitches video because I toyed with the Forkball after MLB lefty Chuck McElroy taught it to me but I always felt I could never achieve the dance, (despite achieving no rotation) due to my hand size being smaller than I felt required for that pitch.
      Also love that you mention the art of rolling on the two seamer because most pros never mention that when discussing the two seamer/sinker but the more pronation you can achieve the greater the vertical movement becomes against the batter.
      Keep up the videos! In my opinion they are invaluable techniques most pitchers never share (either due to inability to convey their skill sets to others; or coveting their secrets because of desire to extend their own job longevity (which I can appreciate)).

    Mr Madden to a Smart hitter that has watched you over and over again to various games from college to the pros and possibly High School do you think that the different change up and curves like a clock, like a 12-6 change up,the slurve and everything else just by the position of your arm is going to give that pitch away and you really saying come on and try to hit it. Lewiston, Idaho. Was nice talking to you too.

    • @YouGoPro

    I’m a sophomore in college (summer of freshman year), had tommy John my end of my senior yeah in may, missed freshman year, and I threw like 87-89 (never got 90) and threw a knuckle slurve (I tried to throw a curveball but it would just end up coming like a slider, but it would break like a slurve if that makes sense) but I have been trying my damndest to throw it again and I just can’t do it again, it’s just not coming back, it’s been 2 months since I was released to throw breaking balls so not having my wipe out pitch is really killing me

    Let me question something do you know where you will go after you die? If not let me say you can have a choice to either go to hell or heaven see 2000 years ago there was this man named Jesus who died on the cross for our sins and rose alive 3 days later all because he truly loved us he died for us so I question you now do you truly believe in Jesus or do you live for the world turn to Jesus Christ trust in him Christ has way much more to give than the world he loves us turn to Christ!
