When I played this years ago, I was a nord with a high infamy and Neville attacked me out right. I killed him in front of everyone and the other guests just acted normal with their regular dialogue panicked that someone had been killed and don't know who it is
I've long held the theory that Fafnir, rather than being a member of the Dark Brotherhood, is actually the client since you only ever encounter him on this one quest in the entirety of Oblivion. Although I'm at a lost as to why he would go through the expense and trouble of hiring the Brotherhood, renting or buying Summitmist Manor, and disguising himself as a Brother.
Yes! I put that in the script but thought people would not enjoy talking about the killer after such a long video. The name Fafnir goes back to Germanic mythos about a being obsessed with Gold. I love that he probably was wronged by each member in some fashion or another & wanted to see them, one last time.
As much as I like this idea I think the fact that no one recognized Fafnir as they came into the house probably shows he’s probably not the client. Like at least one of them would be like “oh yeah that guy whom I wronged. Yeah let me into the house.”
Naa I don't think so, he specifically says that "We have the same Mother you and I" specifically referring to the Night Mother, an Outsider who doesn't know the inner workings of the Dark Brotherhood wouldn't talk like that.
Its possibke assiming fafnir is client which may or may not be possible its possible he was a brother anyways he wouldnt have to be disguised by telling you that
@@WeatherRein the ritual to summon the Dark brotherhood outright mentions a dark mother, and in fact the Night Mother concept is well known thanks to the Dark Horse Courier. The ritual also says "send your child unto me"

When I first played this quest so many years ago I don’t know why, but I took the line from Fafnir literally when he said we had the same mother. It didn’t click with me that he meant the Night Mother. So I was confused about how we got separated and if it would lead to us figuring out more about how we ended up in prison and where we came from. A silly thought on my part.
The characterization you get from all of these assassination targets is so interesting, it kind of makes me sad that we as the PC end up killing them all. It's so interesting how insightful Nels and Primo are, and how all of them together might have been able to discover the assassin's plot if they weren't so divided amongst each other
@@nbHawkeye Or the quest giver is a rich bastard (can afford to rent out a giant manor) who's just so petty that they decided to have all of them killed in the most complicated and dramatic way possible haha. @@destinygalearies7382 I always imagined the mysterious person was a imperial legion soldier. Neville was his superior offcer and treated him like crap. Dovesi was a girl he had feelings for but she ended up telling him that he is way too poor to even think about starting a serious relationship with him. Primo Antonius was either someone he knew growing up who also treated him awfully or somebody he had to protect that told him all the time how a commoner would never be able to enjoy life to the fullest unlike him. Mathilde was a friend of his family. On the outside she was this loving and caring woman while she actually was a gold digger that ended up causing his family to become bankrupt, that's why he had to join the legion in the first place. He also hated her for the same reason he hated Primo. One time he was stationed in Skyrim where a heavyily built drunk almost killed him, that was Nels. This made him pray to the nightmother and with some gold he had saved up he rented that mansion in Skingrad where the people that made his life a living hell would die in a state of total panic. Either that or the owner of the house is a psychopath that just happens to invite random strangers to his house so that the Dark Brotherhood could kill them but considering all of the contracts up to you becoming Lucien's Silencer had a backstory behind them I'd suggest something like what I thik happened makes a bit more sense.

Curiously, the name fafnir is presumably derived from Germanic mythology & although the story changes, the core themes being obsession with gold which becomes the persons downfall. Although this is a tale of greed & fafnir is confirmed a Dark Brotherhood member, as he is the only surviving character from the quest, it could be surmised he had tentative links to each guest which inevitably got them murdered, hence his dismay at not killing off the guests himself. However this is but speculation, what is confirmed is that The whole quest "Whodunit" is an easter egg. And thanks to a commenter True Walter on The Cantinas video who concisely surmises. It shares similarities to Agatha Christies "And then there were none", where 6 guest were invited to a house by a mysterious person. The guest were described as an old maid (Mathilda), an old military gentleman (Neville), a nice looking young lady (Dovesi), a bluff cheery gent (Nels) and a man born to money (Primo). On the dinner table upstairs there are six sweet rolls, though they get eaten. In the book there are six figures, symbolizing the 6 guests. If one dies the figure is removed from the table…

Like, I'd expect Neville & Nels killing eachother, Matilde & Dovesi killing eachother. Primo, since he is clearly a snobby Noble, I'd make him actually cower.
Thanks mate & yes. There are a few reactions that seemed out of place. I was so freaking shocked when they said Dovesi was 15 because.. well, every NPC sounds 40 in Oblivion.

I started watching your content and decided to replay oblivion. I made a save as soon as I walked into the house and replayed this quest so many times until I heard all the dialogue from killing people in different orders.
I only have watching this video, have realised the irony of the doorman being called Fafnir, given how in Norse mythology he’s a greedy man who’s only interest is in gold which ultimately gets him cursed
If Dovesi is a child at 15, but in Morrowind a Telvanni Dunmer was considered a child at only 100 or so years, then either something is weird about Elven aging, or I'm overthinking a minor quip from... was it Neloth? Or a different Telvanni? It's been too long.
It's because Telvanni tend to live for hundreds to thousands of years, so they tend to think of ages differently to other dark elves, with even other House Dunmer thinking Telvanni are strange and near immortal

I don't know if you already told people this but there is unique dialogue from ocheeva's brother if you play as an argonian born under the sign of the shadow
I do remember this quest fondly. I wore the Gold and Black robes you got from a previous DB Bonus reward. So after telling Matilde I was an assassin, without even introducing to the others she offered a team-up and we went into the basement and I eliminated her. From there, I talked to all the characters here and there, but literally just picked them off when no one was looking and they continually got more freaked out, yet not once was I suspected XD. Not even when I killed the 2nd to last myself.
The one thing I notice is that at no point do the guests come to the conclusion that they have killed the killer. Especially obvious when only two of them are left. "I know I'm no killer, and I think I can trust you, that only leaves [other surviving NPC]" and we can convince them to a preemptive strike.
You can get Mathilde up to 100 disposition by greeting her with the I’m an assassin line when you arrive. I also like how almost everyone infantilizes Dovesi when she’s likely the oldest one there.
So I'm relatively new to your channel and I love the narrative you add into your videos! TES has been one of my favorite series and between you, spiffingbrit, and camelworks the amount of content I doom scroll through is so much fun!

Have you ever considered doing a video of any Easter eggs/ hidden areas or special items etc that can be found inside the actual many oblivion gates found around cyrodil? I haven’t seen hardly any videos that involve actually going into the oblivion gates, which is weird because it’s a huge part of the main quest line.
There's only 2 that are unique. The rest are based on 3 or 4 templates. The only differences are the specific loot and levels of enemies. I guess the sigil stone changes, but you can pretty much choose which one you get. It would be 5 videos tops, but it can all be in a single video.
You being the killer can still be a mystery, even to the last one alive, if you have successfully manipulated them. So considering that, I'd have to disagree with you.

You should do an “Elder Scolls” true crime pod cast. I’d listen to that at work all day .
FINALLY!! I've been so excited for this episode AND it's 2 hours long?! Oh Dash Stop your spoiling us 😳😍
I live to serve.
When I played this years ago, I was a nord with a high infamy and Neville attacked me out right. I killed him in front of everyone and the other guests just acted normal with their regular dialogue panicked that someone had been killed and don't know who it is
ROFL
Classic Bethesda
2:18:13 was probably the funniest kill done in this roleplaying of the quest 😂
Neville: “I got the sword!”
Primo: “I have the high ground!” *push*
Classic Oblivion. "YOU'RE PATH-OUHUGHUHH!"
The ritual also says "send your child unto me"
Damn I was already looking forward to this knowing it was the next mission in this series but 2 and a half hours of this incredibly fun quest is more than I could have asked for
When I first played this quest so many years ago I don’t know why, but I took the line from Fafnir literally when he said we had the same mother. It didn’t click with me that he meant the Night Mother. So I was confused about how we got separated and if it would lead to us figuring out more about how we ended up in prison and where we came from. A silly thought on my part.
Still, kinda fun.
That would have been really interesting though!
Khajiit: what do you mean we’re not REALLY siblings?
In all honesty though I also misunderstood lots of things in the game as a kid so relatable lol
yeah, it took me a while to get his implications. Not as an actual lost sibling, but as sort of a trick
I remember jubilating while doing this quest. Funniest quest of the game. It was a good roleplaying opportunity. Loved it.
The characterization you get from all of these assassination targets is so interesting, it kind of makes me sad that we as the PC end up killing them all. It's so interesting how insightful Nels and Primo are, and how all of them together might have been able to discover the assassin's plot if they weren't so divided amongst each other
Well, whatever they did to the unknown quest giver was so horrible that he or she ended up wanting all of them dead. That's something to think about.
@@nbHawkeye Or the quest giver is a rich bastard (can afford to rent out a giant manor) who's just so petty that they decided to have all of them killed in the most complicated and dramatic way possible haha. It just makes you wonder who this person was that they encountered such a variety of people long enough to feel "wronged" by them, from a random drunken Nord to the son of one of the most wealthy families in the Empire.
@@nbHawkeyeso a bit like the inverse murder on the orient express. Instead of a group of people that all have been wronged by the victim we get a group of people that all have wronged the same person.
@@HappyBeezerStudios That's what I tend to believe. Whatever they did to this person made him wish for their death.
This is great! The way you lead into each conversation in character is awesome. And nice dig at the Cliff Racers XD
I have been informed there's a slight glitch on a conversation around 1:48:00 (thank you for catching it) Apologies! Will have the mistake corrected for the upcoming final Full Dark Brotherhood Lore Movie 💀 Also, I didn't add this part of the script for time sake but about the contracts originator: Speaking of fafnir, did you know?

Yeah you could easily say he's sexualizing the NPC's, but him talking during a youtube commentary is just how the format works
You're a mad lad. Thank you for taking the pain-staking time to do this haha.
But I agree with everyone here, this was my absolute favorite quest. I wish we had more quests like this in other games (Bethesda, and other RPG's), where if you play it out perfectly, your relationship with /everyone/ is so high you earn EVERYONE'S trust to make you not suspected at all, convince there's a hidden 7th actor in this scenario hehe.
One thing I'd obviously change with this quest is... the other NPC's reacting to eachother and eventually fighting.
@@DarkLOREDash I noticed that, too! Now I wonder how old Primo was, then lol! I'd probably say 15 or 16 as well
@@ryanbarber6481 One could say they assume there was a ... 7th guest
Thank you for this. I'll be running Oblivion as a D&D campaign starting this year. And having comprehensive videos of all character dialogue in this quest is the ultimate study tool. You made your vocal interactions with the NPCs perfect throughout this :)
This was always one my favorite Oblivion quests. I always played it a few times each play through
This is the one quest that I always keep a save for in every copy of oblivion I’ve ever played and honestly is probably the only quest that keeps making me want to come back to this game even years later
I love how you add your own dialogue and tie both options together as though it was one conversation. It's a very nice and immersive touch to your lore videos!
My favorite quest! Can't count how many times I played it but so much stuff I'm hearing for the first time.
Great content!
You're too kind, mate. Thank you 😍

I honest to God wish I could like this and share it twice because this is the most entertaining video I've seen for 2 years. THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you so very much!
Tragic death of a perfectly fine servant of the emporer. Rip. Back our boys in brass
This quest is obviously the single best quest in TES history. What I love the most about it is, its a genius storytelling not only for the whodunnit murder paranoia, but also the racial tensions between different races.
Hands down the best quest ever in any rpg and no you can't change my mind
I started watching your content and decided to replay oblivion. I made a save as soon as I walked into the house and replayed this quest so many times until I heard all the dialogue from killing people in different orders.
Thank you & yes! It requires a tonne
I only have watching this video, have realised the irony of the doorman being called Fafnir, given how in Norse mythology he’s a greedy man who’s only interest is in gold which ultimately gets him cursed
Yes! I left that detail out & am kicking myself for it 😔
My god how many times did you go through the quest XD You got every. Single. Thing. Damn is this impressive!
A lot of saves. A lot of console manipulation. I thought it'd take me about 3 days. It took 2.5 weeks and some change 😅
I think this is the longest video I've ever watched in full on UA-cam! So worth it!
Boy I loved this mission during my first oblivion playthrough. This and the entirety of the shivering isles plus the old school dungeon crawling aesthetic made me fall in love, I probably have just as many hours in this as I do Fallout 3
It's 8AM for me, and I didn't sleep last night (insomnia is a bitch) but watching Primo throw an excellent overhand right and just crumpling Matilde has got me cry laughing. I do not know why, it was just really fuckin funny in this headspace
I do lappreciate the snobby elitism of a down on her luck, Breton Noble.
@@DarkLOREDash And that rich snooty Imperial just dropped her like a sack of potatoes
Oh man, I've been waiting for th-Holy shit, two hours?! I knew this one had a lot of possibilities and dialogue, but damn! This will have totally been worth the wait.
The fastest I've unalived everyone was around 30 seconds, for you to go through it so meticulously is a breath of fresh air
Thank you for making this! I didn't know there was different dialogue if your disposition was low.
My pleasure mate😍 such a disappointment how much dialogue is missed (and that it's never explicitly stated)
DarkLoreDash is one of the most UA-cam Elder Scroll theorists out there. Another very UA-cam theory, as always!
Thank you so much!
Appreciate the effort and time that goes into these videos. I was getting worried when I didn’t see a video of yours for a minute. Completely understand why now. Excellent work and genuinely entertained by your videos. Find myself rewatching them a few times. Favorite one so far is, Knights of Thorne but this one is definitely a close runner up. Keep up the fantastic work. Thank you for your passion and hard work.
Thank you so much, sztanyo1. My only hope is to keep getting better so that I can do these stories justice.
One of my favorite missions when I first played this game, seeing the entire quest play out like this from everyone’s viewpoints is so enjoyable!! Thanks for the video!
Kudos to you for how thorough you were making this video. This quest is very very complex. I can't even imagine how long it must have taken, but I sure appreciate the end result.
Thank you! It was actually thanks to the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages. The script ended up being about 48 pages long & I was cooked.
I have literally never played this quest line with low disposition, so all the characters saying they hope you die shook me to my core lmao
I've been anxiously awaiting this video since you announced you were tackling it. Great game. Great quest. Thanks so much for doing it!
I don't know if you already told people this but there is unique dialogue from ocheeva's brother if you play as an argonian born under the sign of the shadow
The civil war in skyrim started with that argument
This is probably my most favorite quest in Oblivion! ❤️😍🔥
Really clear you've been working on your voice brotha, it's dadgum perfect I tell ya, dadgum perfect
Oooh that quest always intrigued me. Can't wait to get some more info around the murder party. :D Great intro, also. :'D
2 1/2 hours of absolutely amazing story telling and details! Always worth the wait!
Thank you so much
The one thing I notice is that at no point do the guests come to the conclusion that they have killed the killer.
Been waiting for this quest! Proof oblivion has the best quest writing, listening to help get me through work
So I'm relatively new to your channel and I love the narrative you add into your videos! TES has been one of my favorite series and between you, spiffingbrit, and camelworks the amount of content I doom scroll through is so much fun!
Thank you so much, Andrew! (I too am a fan of Camels sheer attention to detail)
I JUST played this for the first time today, i got it perfectly without anyone suspecting me, it was so fun. First try.
Im kinda sad to get to the purification quest, i hope there are different routes i can take
Waouh!! I am genuinely thrilled by the way you narrate all of those quests, and simulate the player choices. Especially for a Fan Favorite Quest like this one :D
Huge respect and congrats to you, for giving even more life and fun to our favorite game !!!
Aboslutely looking forward to watch all the rest of the guild questlines naratted by you ❤🔥🔥
Have you ever considered doing a video of any Easter eggs/ hidden areas or special items etc that can be found inside the actual many oblivion gates found around cyrodil? I haven’t seen hardly any videos that involve actually going into the oblivion gates, which is weird because it’s a huge part of the main quest line.
There's only 2 that are unique. The rest are based on 3 or 4 templates. The only differences are the specific loot and levels of enemies. I guess the sigil stone changes, but you can pretty much choose which one you get. It would be 5 videos tops, but it can all be in a single video.
I felt so invested in every second of this video! Professional video right here!
Neville & Matilde: *Talk about how all Nords are filthy, unwashed, barbaric animals*
My Nord character: "I think I know who's dying first!"
The last target figuring out your identity really shouldn't count as a failure, as it's not that big of a mystery at that point anymore....
You being the killer can still be a mystery, even to the last one alive, if you have successfully manipulated them. So considering that, I'd have to disagree with you.
I've actually had the weather in Skingrad be different each playthrough, it only changes to a thunderstorm after speaking with the Nord dude in front of the mansion.
That being said, I can't imagine the work that went into this video, amazing!!! Instant like and kudos 👏
This is by far my most favorite quest in the best quest line in all of the Elder Scrolls. I replayed this mission for weeks making a separate save to go back to just to have fun.
Silent psychopath = good listener....... gotcha!
This is one of my favourite elder scrolls quests.
Ok this is actually perfect cuz I play most of my stuff in the background while I sleep, game, or study. Thank you!
This must of took a long time to create, it really shows. This is a really well made video!! Keep up the good work. 👍
Thank you so much!
I always loved going in and just bribing everyone so they all can not fathom my involvement. Always just found it so humorous.
and as usual this did not dissapoint, 2+ hours of pure entertainment!!🤩 as soon as i saw that this was the next in the series i was SO hyped and clearly for good reason so well done👏😊
Thank you kindly!
Still my favorite DB quest of all time. Loved every second of watching it, really brought me back. The nostalgia is real XD
I love leaving the nord and the imperial till last so they attack eachother the kill the survivor while cackling like a madman
This quest by itself validates the existence of video games
Your Oblivion content is easily my favourite on UA-cam. This series in particular has been an absolute gem to watch and I eagerly await each episode.
This video is easily my favourite. This was the quest that sealed the deal for me that Oblivion is my favourite game ever made.
Used to give the voice acting of this game some serious flak and to be honest - although I think the male Redguard and male Breton voices are lacking - I never knew how incredible the female elf voice actress was until hearing more of Dovesi's lines.
That scream is legendary. 😭
DLD is forever my nighttime narrator for sleep, don’t know how many times I’ve heard the same stories haha. Love your stuff man
2 hours!!! 2 HOURS!?!?!?! You spoil us Dark Lore Dash, YOU SPOIL US
Thanks to this in-depth guide I completed this quest in 5 minutes. Thanks, I guess? Lol
I have been waiting for your next video for the past few weeks and boy you did not disappoint! ❤ by the way did anyone else notice that there isn’t a single bathroom or outhouse in oblivion. After playing this for over 15 years, this is the first time I’ve realised it 😂
Thank you & yes! No amenities or kitchens to speak of. Hard to unsee!
Thousands of years ago, when humans first started creating what we call "plays," somebody made a decision: Should we show our characters using the toilet? Luckily we know how that turned out. Except that one movie with Melanie Griffith and...I wanna say...Griffin Dunne? lol
I found it funny that toilets were included in Skyrim if you look for them! Usually a bucket next to a book in a secluded corner lmao.
I loved every second of this. Thank you for all the hard work put into it!
What can I even say, Dash? I have never done the Dark Brotherhood questline, so I had no idea there was this much depth in any Oblivion quest. Bang up job as always mate, but with this one, you earned your bonus for sure.
This game was so well-made and so meticulous with the details, especially with the main quest-lines. What had happened? With what people stated with the Dark brotherhood I really thought that Skyrim would outdo Oblivion, but it didn't. This is by far the most detailed quest of any game. Chefs' kiss. The fact you could make a 2.5 hr long video on this quest alone, demonstrates how perfect this game was and still is. If only it was available for Switch.
Has anyone tried killing them using poison apples?? 🤔
