It just occurred to me that this whole quest was simply meant to be foreshadowing for what was going to happen next with the members of the Black Hand and their mother.
Weird story: on my first ever playthrough, not even three hours into the game I decided to break into a house in the imperial city (out of curiosity of course)... I eventually went down to the basement and met none other than Matthias Draconis, just randomly wandering around in the basement. I struck up a conversation with him and apparently his disposition towards me was low because he not only snorted but also mocked me. I was so offended I waited for him to turn around and bashed him with a war hammer. I think it only took one hit. Ironically, the infamous "your actions have been witnessed by forces unknown" prompt came up and I had no clue what the dark brotherhood was at the time, but later on I cracked up when I saw his name on the list. "already taken care of."
LaChance does 'Hang out' here... I hear his house parties are murder... The 'Spill your guts type'.... Start in Bruma and wake up in Bravil next to some 'Lucky lady' who is old enough to be your mother!
I always found it funny how Peronnia thought it would be a good idea to use a gift delivery service for a daughter who is living in the wild cave with a bunch of wild animals all of which will attack anyone on sight XD. Good that it was a psychopathic assassin who took on the task.
is there any chance that Lucien LaChance might actually be one of the Draconis Children? The night mother in lore has five children, and while you take out Perennia and her four children in this quest, I found it odd that Lucien hides out in Applewatch for the last parts of the Dark Brotherhood quests. He's an imperial, like most of the rest of the family, and his subsequent fate would complete the night mother's story with the Draconis family if so. I could be way off but the Draconis family dead drop is the hit before the orders start getting switched by the traitor in the Black Hand, which makes it even more interesting if Lucien was somehow related.
very nice thought What catch my attention is how Perennia say "By Mephala not that" when she talk about her daughter. Kind of weird to say Mephala instead of any Divine like most NPCs

Perennia's ghost is actually levelled, so if you're high enough level she'll turn into a Wratih of some variety. Was a real nasty surprise the first time I went back there and got jumped by a Gloom Wraith from behind
The black hand quests are a perfect reminder that we are working for an evil assassin cult. The warm family atmosphere at the sanctuary and the targets who often have enough clues that they kinda deserved their fate may dull that sense of evil after a while.
Nah, a lot of the people you kill are straight up for the contractors benefit. Baelin for example was completely innocent and murdered so Caenlin, his nephew could inherit his house.
One theory I've read is that Perennia herself called the hit and might even be the next Night Mother (the one we see in Skyrim). The major clue is that she says "by Mephala", and the gravestones read like a chiding mother wrote them.
That doesn't explain why kills you though or panics when you kill them, or that the Nightmother in Skyrim is the same one from Oblivion. Fun theory though

Probably nothing special, so I just had to kill her last. A pity, it would've been a nice twist in the story to have a nasty Grande Finale for this evil plot. ☠✋🏿
I wonder why the mother mentions Mephala, which seems like a random or out of character being for her to reference like that, and the gravestone for Andreas mentions Azura - rather than any of the Divines. Maybe they were originally going to be a Dunmer family? Or secret Daedra worshippers or something.
Or she worships Mephala and called the hit on her entire family as a sort of ritual. Mephala is connected to the DB, as the DB is an offshoot of the Morag Tong and the Morag Tong worship Mephala

I was always curious about what the story with Mattias Draconis was. Why is he a Breton? Was his mother naughty? How did his dad react when he started speaking with that accent as a child? As we all know, accents are hereditary.
Considering the racial appearances of the children are usually inherited from the mother, I'm guessing it was either the father was the one being unfaithful, or Mathis is/was adopted. Just my guess😆

Never understood the desire to wipe this family out. I have a feeling a few members of the family were former/current Dark Brotherhood, and Mathieu was just being a d**k to the entire lot of them. The worst part about this quest-line though, was the there was no way to curb the fact you were about to kill MORE of your fellow DB members. After J'Ghasta alone it was obvious you were killing DB members. If you talked to him(suggesting you actually did, and didn't just snipe and kill while he slept) he practically admits he's also DB, without explicitly stating. You: "*Mention's Sithis*" J'Ghasta: "Sithis? What is this treachery? Who sent you? I don't know who is behind this outrage, but I will have blood! To the Void with you, assassin!" Like, I as the player immediately figured it out, and the simple fact he had DB regalia in a chest only cemented it. But there was simply no alternative and it pisses me off when I think about it. Otherwise a magically fun quest-line.
Hmm, interesting take... What makes you think part of the Draconis family may have been former Dark Brotherhood? (If I understand you correctly). I think there's a difference between the contracts Lucien gave you and the ones the traitor gave you while using Lucien's name. I'll reference TES2: Daggerfall here for an example. Now, in that game, there is no Dark Brotherhood storyline. It's all randomly generated, with most of it being "go to X dungeon and kill Y person" However, they do offer a sorta "background" as to why you're being sent on the contract, with a few of these reasons being something like executing a traitor, finding and executing a member who failed in an assignment, and finding an possibly executing a member with an unauthorized absence since the Dark Brotherhood prides itself on knowing where its members are at all times. Estranged family members have to dealt with, so if some of the Draconis family was former DB, then their estrangment might be why Lucien ordered you to kill them. However, when it comes to the traitor who posed as Lucien after that particular contract, he had you purposely target current active members. So, I guess while you're killing family members (former or current) the motives are different: one being to protect to the DB's security so estranged members don't rattle on about it. And the other being to dismantle the DB from the inside.
@@Deathly_Visage Oh, I'm just commenting a theory. I have no clue if any were current or former members. The theory came to mind, cause I found it just bizarre that J'Ghasta(the first confirmed DB member) would have any inkling someone was after his life, less Mathieu had enough of an idea that J'Ghasta wouldn't bother to alert the guard, since it could risk his existence as an assassin being exposed. Beyond that, the rest of my post was lamenting we couldn't steer the course of the damn story, seeing as we the players can sus the truth we were being tricked.

Yeah, I believe you can pick pocket it. But you could theoretically kill them all pre meeting her. Shit, if you killed them ALL the quest would simply conclude as soon as she died & direct you to the next dead drop.
I was slightly disappointed how little opportunity for poisoned apple hits there was with this family, as only Matthias seems to take any time out of his schedule to eat, and does it in public: a fact which requires clearing the Bloated Float tavern deck of every single edible (which I'll assume the owners let me do for having saved their arses from the pirates) and carefully awaiting the moment to prime a table with a poisoned apple to avoid offing random hungry NPCs. Still, the moment it finally worked and the poor bugger slumped dead on a bench next to the supremely indifferent Captain Carmalo Truiand was classic Oblivion hilarity.
I would have loved it so much, if when you killed lucien and didn't join the DB there would be a new rumor that directed you to the mother.
