6 years later: - "BABYMETAL BECOME FIRST ASIAN ARTISTS TO HIT NO. 1 ON BILLBOARD'S TOP ROCK ALBUMS CHART" - "Babymetal are officially one of the 10 greatest metal bands ever" - Metal Hammer - Opened, toured, and performed with many of the biggest heavy metal bands/singers ever - Performed with Rob Halford of Judas Priest - Performed "Gimme Chocolate" with Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as with Korn
I've had a theory about why people love BABYMETAL so much and come away smiling after listening to / seeing them. Basically put, you get the adrenaline rush that metal gives and then at intervals it is backed up by the feelings of happiness/love that the cuteness (kawaii) gives you. This is built up layer after layer till by the time songs like The One or any of the other songs they close with come along and it's not uncommon to see people literally in tears. I am sure it's a cerebral endorphine euphoria. I think this is a very clever formula and no doubt it works. Love it !! Having said that, the quality of the singing and musicians is top quality and beyond question. I am by no means trying to take anything away from that.
Just found this in 2023 and you are spot on about BM even 8 year ago. It is incredible how they have grown and still rocking it since this video was post. They just keep getting better.
Just saw this in 2019. Still excellent. Actually timeless. For a fan, you are incredibly lucky. Met the girls, met Kobayashi-san, were at Sonicphere. I too was a punker in my younger days. This band brought me back to music. Aloha from Hawaii.

So metal legend Dom Lawson singles out '4 no uta' as a stand out track for him. What many people don't know is that '4 no uta' was written by Moametal and Yuimetal. So not only are they beyond beautiful, can sing and dance, have great personalities, but they can also write a metal song that master Dom Lawson approves of. I scoff at the notion that these girls aren't talented, they are just too talented for most haters to appreciate.
I think you're getting confused with the word 'hot'. Anything or anyone can be beautiful. They are indeed young but my eyes anyway, they are all very beautiful.
This is such an interesting time machine. I had no idea that when Babymetal played the Sonisphere their CD wasn't even for sale in the UK :) That's cool.
I think what gets lost behind all the novelty and the arguments over whether or not its metal is Su-Metal, their lead singer. She has a pretty incredible voice for being that young. Its has substance behind it, its powerful when it needs to be. She is absolutely the definition of a lead singer. I haven't seen them live, but from what I've seen on UA-cam, it definitely translates live.
All i know is, they'd make better role models for my daughter than Rhianna or Niki Minaj. I hope.if this does become a "thing" that the bands to follow are similarly grounded.
sugelanren Completely agree! Show your daughter Sakura Gakuin (Cherry Blossom Academy). It's their school-themed main idol group, where BABYMETAL comes from. They have activity clubs, contests, they sing and dance, and they have classes in a variety of subjects too, taught by some of the most prominent artists and professors in Japan. If you want role models for your daughter, there is ten of them right there :)
I'm actually glad with your review dude, I'm glad that you said it doesn't matter if the band is manufactured to be any good. Was never a fan of metal but now thanks to Babymetal I love that genre.
Until today, I'd only heard/seen parts of one of their songs on Scuzz TV, but after watching Doms' well reasoned video here, I checked out a few of their songs here on UA-cam. The result?. Been on repeat the past 90 minutes!. I'm pretty much a metalhead but have never had a problem with "pop sensibilities"....especially when they're this good....Babymetal are phenomenal, get that album on UK release!.
coming back to watch this again years later- "It might be a novelty, it might be a flash in the pan... " Hey Dom- three years later, and look at them now!
It's now 2024 and the 10th anniversary of this album, and Babymetal is still defying the haters, releasing their fourth studio album in 2023 and completing a 94 show, 25 country world tour. At this point, they have well and truly beaten the "flash in the pan" allegations.
Great review. As an old fart who hasn't listened to metal for a while and only discovered them this weekend. I find them incredible. I haven't stopped listening since.
I was not aware of the existence of BabyMetal until last week when Rob Zombie put a post on Facebook featuring them!!!! So I checked out the videos Gimmie Chocolate and Karate on UA-cam and now I'm hooked... I bought both their albums on Monday and its all I've been listening to.. they are awesome.....
I completely agree with this review. Such a breath of fresh air. The best part is that my 6 yr old daughter went from watching/singing that fucking frozen song over and over to gimme chocolate. Lmao fucking amazing!
I love this. It's like the dude tapped my brain. Best review ever. Get the album from cdjapan, support Babymetal. And keep listening to Darkthrone on cassette.
***** You really like BabyMetal brother?? I find that to be surprising, honest. But truthfully, they are very interesting musicians, and have a very unique stage show that has an undeniable eye catching energetic choreographic presence. bottom line. NOT THE MOST HARDCORE OF SHITE FOR A METAL HEAD TO SPORT, but talented metal none the less for what it is.
Daniel Dannheim Yeah, I just find it refreshing, it's a bit of lighthearted fun entertainment in a genre that takes it self waaay to seriously a lot of the time. Most of the metal I usually listen to and play is of the dark and/or hard type, and I guess there's something about the contrast between that and this stuff that I enjoy. Haven't really gone out of my way to analyze it, I just take it for what it is.
***** That's a good point! It definitely is refreshing, and pretty upbeat, and pretty catchy.....even to the harshest of metal trained ears like mine....Honestly though, i wouldn't throw this on when chilling with my friends......they;re kind of a guilty pleasure! xD LMAO!!! But MAN!! that hook in "Give Me Chocolate" is fucking catchy as all hell!!! lol!
I was coming off a Trvium kick and a friend got me listening to Give me Chocolate. Like you said, it's refreshing and a guiltly pleasure. I had my coworkers dumbfounded listening to them. The final track Ijime Dame Zettai is crazy fun and my favorite! You don't know whether to bang your head or dance around! This is the break of sorts that metal needed. They're just too damn fun!!!
"ii ne" means something like "how nice." And 4 no uta is "song number 4." "no" is a possessive in Japanese and "uta" is song. So it's kind of like "song of number 4" and it's awesome because the song is literary about the number four. "Yon" is the number 4 in Japanese and "shi" can be four but it's also death so the entire song is a play on words between the actual number 4 and death. Very clever. Great review. Very level headed. I agree very much about what you said regarding manufactured bands. I really don't think there's a band out there that's not manufactured in some way since it's really hard to do your own makeup, hair, wardrobe, stage production, music videos, ticket sales, tour schedule, and find time to write aaaalllllllll your own songs. All bands have creative help and there's nothing wrong with that. People also tend to criticize the fact that the girls didn't know about metal before they joined the band but there's no one that was born knowing about it (except maybe the fox god, lol). Everyone has been introduced to something new in their life that they've never heard of before. And those new things can either be for you or not. It seems to me the girls have embraced metal and are into it now, even if it was strange to them to begin with. Love your beard too.
I'm a metalhead but Babymetal is like a breathe of fresh air... majority of metal bands nowadays are just too depressing to listen to... EVerybody knows this is just a novelty act, but man, the energy they bring to the audience is just infectious... If anyone who's been to one of their shows in Japan (Zepp Tokyo), the intensity and audience participation is there.... It's almost like an organized chaos (in a good way)
true, because in most shows here in america the band May have your attention for the first 15min,but after that fans start texting on phones until a song they like starts playing! Baby Fuckin Metal!
I literally avoided this group like the plague until today. But I checked this album out and...it's really interesting. And good. Surprised I actually enjoyed it. Good review, man. Subscribed!
I've been into all kinds of music, but I was especially into the old metal or "hard rock" bands in the '70's. One thing I liked about what was going on back then was the experimentation and eclecticism. You could easily tell one band from another, because they were given lots of creative license and were heavily influenced by progressive rock. Well, not only influenced; they were prog. They also mixed the heavy stuff with folksy ballads, and threw in some mystical Kashmir-like songs. Having said all that, I just heard Babymetal for the first time a few weeks ago, here in the States, on the Late Show, and I have to say that I was blown away in a way that reminded me of those old days, when metal, prog, glam, punk, folk rock, etc., were a listening adventure, and there was lots of musical fusion going on. Also reminded me of the first time I heard Nirvana (before they were famous). Thanks for your review. You said exactly what I was thinking, but hadn't yet put into words.
Yes. This guy has got it right! For some reason, everytime I click on a video that is of a metalhead reviewing Babymetal I always think, "Oh here we go, somebody's going to complain..." when I finally click, I am pleasantly surprised that they love Babymetal! It's a fundamental attribution error on my part, I shouldn't be surprised because it seems that everyone, even 'Hardcore Metalheads' enjoy Babymetal! And those who don't...Well, you can get left behind in your egotistical bubble in the past. Now to follow this man on Twitter! Yay! I should have known from 'Metal Hammer' that these guys love Babymetal! Thanks for the awesome poster!
Great review Dom. They bridged a gap that no one was even paying attention to and all of sudden two genres were coinciding with one another and loving every moment of it. Like so many have said they're a breath of fresh air and just all around good fun.
I missed this review when it came out two years ago, but it certainly turned out to be well justified. BABYMETAL are set to play Tokyo Dome on September 19th & 20th (2016) with 55,000 people per night. This after yet another World Tour selling out most (if not all) venues. The second album, Metal Resistance has less genre smooshing but still overlays J-pop/Idol vocals over the heavy instrumentals. Overall it feels more like a survey of metal genres with their own unique take on it.
EVERY CD case gets that crack in that exact spot eventually! I'm partial to the song "Megitsune". When it breaks down with the traditional Japanese style, it just hits my ear so perfectly.
A most relevant topic: the festivals, specially Sonisphere 2014. That day, those kids conquered their fears, stepped in on the foreign stage and knocked the socks off 60K people; most of them die-hard metalheads who didn't really know what to expect in the first place. After a short set they walked away proudly, under the crowd's roaring applause and "we want more!" choruses. Since then they've been conquering one stage after another. All my respect to them and the best wishes for the future. And this is late but thanks Dom for an intelligent, mature, and fun review. Cheers, mate! \m/
I just heard them 5 minutes ago, and i thought breath of fucking fresh air. I can see a big future for them in film soundtrack/gaming music Akira metal...why the fuck not
AV Veratu quirky, more like. I remember when suicidal tendencies and faith no more first came out, the crossover stuff is always pissed on by the dinosaurs. More power to em, i say.
You're comparing this record company pop creation to Faith No More, who are actual talented passionate musos. This is by the numbers Metalcore, nothing original here. The only talent involved in this band is their marketing guy.
AV Veratu BM musicians all as accomplished as FNM. They don't write the songs, but SOMEONE DOES! It's a group of about 10 guys and the songs are KILLER! Mike Patton was cute, but not as cute as Su-metal, so what is not to like about this band?? - Just metal dinosaur egos I think. 'nothing original', the reaction this is provoking would suggest otherwise.
AV Veratu nothing original? Really? Really? Reeeeeaaaaaallllyyy? I'm not saying it'll be in my top 10 albums of all time, but it's fresh. The musicians can play well, the performers perform well. The little girls are bursting with enthusiasm, and bring a bit of spark to a genre of music that has been smelling its own farts for the past 20 years Good luck to them i say. In the future (when the kids grow up) i see them maybe taking on a gore police style feel to them with any luck lol
Nice & Great review Brilliant, Incredible, Joyful for Babymetal Song list : 1.BABYMETAL DEATH 2.メギツネ [Megitsune] 3.ギミチョコ!![Gimme Choco] 4.いいね![ iine ] 5.紅月-アカツキ- [ Akatsuki ] 6.ド・キ・ド・キ☆モーニング [ Do・Ki・Do・Ki☆Morning ] 7.おねだり大作戦 [ Onedari Daisakusen ] 8.4の歌(444 Ver.)[ 4 No Uta ] 9.ウ・キ・ウ・キ★ミッドナイト[ U ki U ki★Midnight ] 10.Catch me if you can 11.悪夢の輪舞曲 [ Akumu no Rinbukyoku ] 12.ヘドバンギャー!![ Headbanger!! ] 13.イジメ、ダメ、ゼッタイ [ Ijime Dame Zettai / No More Bullying Absolutely ]
I wholeheartedly agree with that review. Totally impartial and he does have a point. The majority of people who dislike Babymetal tend to be die hard metal fans who cling onto the catharsism of bands and little else, and pop fans who are afraid of anything resembling metal in the first place. I was lucky enough to get a ticket to see Babymetal live in the forum on the 7th and I have to say, I have NEVER experienced so much euphoric energy in a metal gig before! I had a constant smile on my face for the whole gig!
Great review! It's crazy how polarising this band is, u either really love or really hate them with very few indifferent to them. The people hating them are usually posers trying look like they're hardcore metalheads that only listen to true heavy metal but are afraid of what other metalheads will think or say about them if they admit they like Babymetal.Listen to whatever music makes u happy. I didn't I think I could like music with catchy pop vocals but it grows on u if u let it. Pop & metal don't seem like they would go together but somehow it works bcuz the music is so well done. There is such pure joy in the girls singing that sounds like they were having a lot of fun during recording & it comes thru while listening & makes u feel happy. Not too many albums now days make me feel like that. Its a fun album & if u hate it u r probably not a fun person 2b around.
Wow! Im actually surprised that he said he adored "4 no uta"! That song was actually written by Moa and Yui (the two shorter girls). Its one of their heavier but also more playful songs.
This really deserves further explanation. If people actully translated thier music. They would be even more impressed with them. Unlike many Metal bands which focus on all the negative aspects of society. Which has gotten metal a worse reputation then it really deserves. BabyMetal has taken that concept and turned it on it's head. There message is a possitive one. Not to mention addressing many issues which effect young Japanese women. Pressure of meeting societies expectations. To be possitive, not give up on life. Or let societal rules dictate ones life. To be happy, love life, eat chocolate and worry about getting fat lol. They without question are great role models. Not something you would expect coming from Metal. This is a great album and I expect we haven't heard the last of BabyMetal. This is just the beginning. :)
Glad to see or read Metal Hammer saying good things about Babymetal. Actually i was thinking that you guys were only using the band the get some likes and RTs on social networks because all the post were like "Chocolate saving metal". But this shit is what i was waiting for, a metalhead talking about the album, being honest. Again, glad to hear so many good words about the album. I highly recommend this album, at least to give a try, search about, read about the band, and just enjoy, don't read stupid comments about the band, just LISTEN THE FUCKING MUSIC and then you will get you OWN VISION of the band. Cheers.
Thank you SO much for this Don! You head the nail right on its head with this. YES the music is really really good(IMHO). and just as important, its FUN! in an almost naive way. It just makes you happy to listen to (can you call it happy metal?) Also Thanks for confirming my thoughts about "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" sounding like power metal. it is my favorite track, and the one that really got me hooked because of the Epic/Powermetal feeling. this is the first video i have ever seen you do, but I'm an instant fan of your honest, no bullshit style. If you really want to find out what they are singing about there are sites around on the net with translations and explanations about the songs, since some of them are rooted in Japanese culture that can be hard for us westerners to understand.
Thanks for telling it like it is. Really cool support! Personally I love this band especially with the live Kami Band. It's like you said we don't care about manufacturing, if it's good, it's good.
Dude, your view is my exact commentary on this band, I can't get enough of it. I'm seeing them open for Lady Gaga in Phoenix Arizona..and I'm a die hard metal fan...open your mind and the rest will follow....We're gonna take what's ours to have spread the word throughout the land. They say the bad guys wear black we're tagged and can't turn back.
the first song i heard from them was uki uki midnight it was so awesome and the video is great with unique lyrics which include squid.also doki doki morning is one of my favorites.i think possibly you meant to say megitsune which has a lot of that rough style.it is refreshing i feel a lot of the metal community took them in and love them and know how to be a decent person.id get the album if it meant supporting them even paying the charge.im not a big metal person like many i like posthardcore and metalcore but to see babymetal overcome the odds and be appreciated is amazing.also these 3 girls work so hard the lead singer is extremely talented and the younger 2 are amazing dancers.i do regret not going to the show in nyc i knew of a few who did and they loved it kind of rubbing it in my face.oh well i certainly hope they do what makes them happy in life and not feel pressured to pursue something just to do it.i know im a fan
Agree for her age Su-Metal is beyond her years. What impresses me is the fact these women are getting such an early start. This is going to play huge dividends for them later on. I think what bothers some people. Is that they arn't doing things most young girls do. Instead of playing with dolls. They are rocking to sold out concerts and headbanging along the way. That just goes so against the establishment and I love it. Furthermore the fact they are women in an metal industry dominated by middle aged men. Is a win for the women in rock movement. Way to go ladies! ! I so want to see them in Denver now!!
Dom, great review! Agreed great cd! You pretty much said everything I was thinking! Going to see them in a few months on 2016 tour. You are correct, alot of Metal bands have kind of pop sing-along lyrics...Maiden, Priest, etc. I can't understand BabyMetal's lyrics because its in Japanese but, I don't care! "If its good..its good!" Yes sir, "this is very good!" This band really controls its audience! Have you seen the clips of the massive mosh pits going into a frenzy? Its nuts...its great fun! I can see them being around for years to come!
Methinks Megitsune is the track you couldn't remember the name of. And that breakdown you mentioned is supposedly Yui-Metal screaming and then sampled out. Plus, the breakdown is actually taken from Sakura Sakura, a wonderful Japanese folk tune. Rave-hooked, Power Death Folk Metal? Yes please! Haters be gone!
Megitsune and Uki Uki Midnight are my fave tracks so far. "if your first thought on seeing three teenage Japanese girls is underage sex then your the one with the problem" brilliant, i'm using this whenever someone questions my motivations for liking them.
Hard core Rocker (LED ZEPPELIN...) and Metal Head (IRON MAIDEN, METALLICA...) for many, many years, the flame faded quite a bit, but Babymetal reeled me back in! Idol, kawai, jpop + metal?!!! WTF?!!! F'ing BRILLIANT!!! Seeing them July 2016! Gnna MOSH'SH!!!
I'm obviously very late coming into this but I wanted to thank you for actually listening to the album before you reviewed it. I've seen other reactions with both their albums and its clear that they didn't even listen to it. They get too many things factually wrong.
The song is iine, with a capitalized first "I". Iine means "so good". It's also sometimes written as "Ii ne". The next one you had trouble with is 4 no Uta (Song of 4). From babymetal.net/babymetal-translation/4-uta-song-4-english-translation/ "About Japanese Reading of Numbers The number 4 has two readings in Japanese: “shi” from (ancient) Chinese, and native “yottsu” (yon, yo). Many Japanese associate the number 4 with death because both are read as “shi”, and they tend to avoid this number. For example, most parking lots lack #4 & #9 (both 9 and pain are read as “ku”)." The song, "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" is an anti-bullying song. The title roughly translated is "No More Bullying".
Thought I would hate it, but love it. I rock it every workout. It is better because I don't speak Japanese and their lyrics is more lyrical noise. BUT...the metal is solid and they sample so many different genres.
Yes! A mention to Sigh. Since bringing in Dr Mikannibal they've been putting out stormer after stormer, and In Somniphobia was my album of the year when it came out. I don't consider it odd at all; I was just enthralled by a metal band bringing out something so different and really trying to create a different sound. I came across Babymetal with Megitsune and it was my obsession with hearing new metal sounds like Sigh have been trying to do, as well as for me Devin, Stolen Babies (1st album) and, most importantly, the much maligned Diablo Swing Orchestra that made me instantly get obsessed. It's weird how if they hadn't exploded in popularity Babymetal may have been put in the avant garde metal category with the rest of those bands who people can't assign a genre to.
Just a tip on the masterpiece of Babymetal Death: in japanese it's pronounced like "Babymetal des" wich translates in "this is Babymetal". I think that's simply brilliant! Anyway I agree with your video, and I also think that Babymetal is the stepping stone for Metal in general: it's easy to grasp and catchy, while at the same time it IS metal. I think it will bring a huge amount of people into metal (and all its different shapes). Some friends of mine didn't even like metal before Babymetal, yet now they can enjoy other (more "classic") metal bands.
Daniel Fuentes I was referring to the song that he liked from the album but can't remember the name and the clues were growling voices and death metal tune so it's Catch Me If You Can.
omgosh i loved this review. You are quite awsome and i agree with everything You have said here. I am a big jpop kpop music lover but i also love my 80s and classic rock and some other metal groups but BabyMetal has won me over and now i cant stop listening to them ~giggles~ you Sir have won my subscription as well :) to bad i hadnt come across Your channel sooner
"Babymetal Death" is kinda a play on words, if you didn't know. "Death" is pronounced "desu"(or "des"..."u" is kinda silent) in Japanese...which is also a copula or linking verb("is" "am" etc). This is why it's their introductory track as it means something like "[We] are Babymetal". I like how the track seems to be Death Metal, too, so there's that, as well.
Let the haters hate. I think they are a refreshing addition to the metal scene. The current big things in metal seem geared towards shouty growly lyrics that I neither understand or can sing along to. Part of the fun is making up Japanese in order to sing along. I did the same to Rammestein. It's not illegal to smile at Metal. And the whole idea both baffles me and makes me smile so it's a win in my book. Best not listened to in the car though as it is reminiscent of driving games and may cause you to die. A good review sir. Baby Metal are worthy of rock fingers and if it makes your ears ring and gets you sweaty it has a place in the wide world of metal. (Insert humorous and contemplative Japanese quotation here).
bang on the money Dom, people seem to have this notion that metal is constrained by certain boundaries but they couldn't further from reality if they tried, there are no boundaries as such for metal, there are a multitude of genres and sub genres under the umbrella of the term metal, deal with it.
Agree with everything he said, when I first checked them out I thought i wouldn't like it, but that riff along with disco/rave sounds in the track Megitsune had me hooked
my supervisor at work introduced me to this band the other day and at 1st i didnt know what to think i was just sitting here like What is this!!!!! Lol its something ive never even heard of in 25+ years of listening to metal......and honestly its a nice change hope this band goes friggin huge all over the world \m/>_
This is a great video and a really down to earth opinion from a true metal head. I got introduced to Babymetal earlier this year and really enjoyed the music and the performance. Hoping to go and see them live when they come to London again.
Best quote, 'I totally get why people wouldn't listen to it, and thats fine, but fuck off'
6 years later:

- Opened, toured, and performed with many of the biggest heavy metal bands/singers ever
- Performed with Rob Halford of Judas Priest

I've had a theory about why people love BABYMETAL so much and come away smiling after listening to / seeing them.
Basically put, you get the adrenaline rush that metal gives and then at intervals it is backed up by the feelings of happiness/love that the cuteness (kawaii) gives you. This is built up layer after layer till by the time songs like The One or any of the other songs they close with come along and it's not uncommon to see people literally in tears. Just found this in 2023 and you are spot on about BM even 8 year ago. It is incredible how they have grown and still rocking it since this video was post. They just keep getting better.
They're strangely addictive to listen to and watch and i just started watching them 65 mins ago and all i keep saying is:
" just one more video "
Just saw this in 2019. Still excellent. Actually timeless. For a fan, you are incredibly lucky. Met the girls, met Kobayashi-san, were at Sonicphere. I too was a punker in my younger days. This band brought me back to music. Aloha from Hawaii.

They will dorminate the world.
I can't wait the live at Makuhari in June.
Which has the biggest mosh pit ever!
Have fun in the pit"...are u up for WOD or going for the happy mosh pit.?
This is the best, most level headed review if Babymetal. I'm subscribing
Me too..... such an open minded gentleman.
So metal legend Dom Lawson singles out '4 no uta' as a stand out track for him. What many people don't know is that '4 no uta' was written by Moametal and Yuimetal. sugelanren
Agree fully, much better role models for young girls.
sugelanren Completely agree! If you want role models for your daughter, there is ten of them right there :)
sugelanren
Only if they come from Japan will they be similarly grounded. Any other country, no chance.
Su-metal and kami band members are unbelievably talented.
The man makes a lot of sense.
Totally agree.
I was at The Forum show; it was one of the most entertaining gigs I've ever been to!
I'm actually glad with your review dude, I'm glad that you said it doesn't matter if the band is manufactured to be any good. Was never a fan of metal but now thanks to Babymetal I love that genre.
"I've never seen so many happy metalheads in my life." haha that made me chuckle

Officially the best Babymetal review!
Absolutely hit the nail on the head in every way. Two words said in the middle sums this whole thing up.
"It's fun."
Great review. As an old fart who hasn't listened to metal for a while and only discovered them this weekend. I find them incredible. I haven't stopped listening since.
Joyful is absolutely the right word to describe Babymetal. They're just really good fun to listen to.
Your daughter is the best! She really represents what we would like the future to be like, BabyMetal DEATH!!!
Daniel Dannheim
Yeah, I just find it refreshing, it's a bit of lighthearted fun entertainment in a genre that takes it self waaay to seriously a lot of the time.
Most of the metal I usually listen to and play is of the dark and/or hard type, and I guess there's something about the contrast between that and this stuff that I enjoy.
Haven't really gone out of my way to analyze it, I just take it for what it is.
*****
That's a good point! It definitely is refreshing, and pretty upbeat, and pretty catchy.....even to the harshest of metal trained ears like mine....Honestly though, i wouldn't throw this on when chilling with my friends......they;re kind of a guilty pleasure! xD LMAO!!!
But MAN!! that hook in "Give Me Chocolate" is fucking catchy as all hell!!! lol!
Most of my friends hate Babymetal, that just makes me love putting them on when we drink even more! ;)
Also: 4 no Uta was actually written by the 2 younger girls in Babymetal :-)
I'm a metalhead but Babymetal is like a breathe of fresh air... majority of metal bands nowadays are just too depressing to listen to... EVerybody knows this is just a novelty act, but man, the energy they bring to the audience is just infectious... If anyone who's been to one of their shows in Japan (Zepp Tokyo), the intensity and audience participation is there.... It's almost like an organized chaos (in a good way)
true, because in most shows here in america the band May have your attention for the first 15min,but after that fans start texting on phones until a song they like starts playing! Baby Fuckin Metal!
+OperationEndGame today's metal band are not metal band
"I only listen to Darkthrone on cassette..." Haha. Loved it
I literally avoided this group like the plague until today.
You can't help but be happy when listening or watching this band. They are just a weird mashup of awesome!
Listened to babymetal for the first time today, put a smile on my face
Very different very awesome! Great review Dom!
"Because they're only listening to Darkthrone on cassette!" Hahahahaha!!! Beautiful! XD
Yuimetal's smile steals your soul and makes you happy!
Congratulations on your courage, because many would not admit admiration for b-metal in public. Many men were ashamed to admit it. Hug from Brazil
I can see a big future for them in film soundtrack/gaming music Akira metal...why the fuck not
Goo goo ga ga bulshit.
Nice & Great review

"If it's good, it's good"
nailed it...
Excellent review. I totally agree.
Agree 100% with what you said! I hope to see them live at one point! :p
Hey everyone!! Check MetallAndy's channel! Omg he does amazing Babymetal covers! Wooo! \m/
I love MetallAndy!! XD
Ayumu Nakamoto Thank you! :)
EB Productions Haha! Love you too! :p
I did yesterday. THEY ARE AMAZING!
He's the metal version of Top Gear
My 6 year old son loves this band. So it works. I find it fascinating and addictive.
"IS STRANGE FENOMENOM"
BABYMETAL HAS THE BEST ALBUM GOAL IN THE LAST 17 YEARS
This really deserves further explanation.
Finally someone else that normally listens to metal but loves BabyMetal :D
The first Iron Sandwich where Dom is not remotely grumpy! Brilliant!
Its the coffee.
I recently bought the limited edition CD/DVD of their album great stuff really great album overall
Perfect review!! And you were right; it does have legs. 😊 Kitsunes up 🤘🏻 😎 🦊
I lost it at the "I only listen to Dark Throne on Cassette" comment
Glad to see or read Metal Hammer saying good things about Babymetal. Actually i was thinking that you guys were only using the band the get some likes and RTs on social networks because all the post were like "Chocolate saving metal". But this shit is what i was waiting for, a metalhead talking about the album, being honest. Again, glad to hear so many good words about the album. I highly recommend this album, at least to give a try, search about, read about the band, and just enjoy, don't read stupid comments about the band, just LISTEN THE FUCKING MUSIC and then you will get you OWN VISION of the band. Cheers.
1986 - Run DMC & Aerosmith. People said it wouldn't work. They said Rick Rubin was crazy (he probably is though). It worked. Babymetal works.
I picked up this album and i love it :D I cant help but be happy whilst i listen to it haa
Couldn't agree more! =]
Thanks for telling it like it is. Really cool support!
Personally I love this band especially with the live Kami Band.
It's like you said we don't care about manufacturing, if it's good, it's good.
your videos are life hahaha. "thats fine dont listen to it.. and fuck off". Oh how i lol'd
I was at the Forum! and I had an absolutely amazing fucking time! haha! great video man! :D
Never seen any of these videos before. Love everything that was said in this video. New Subscriber,
Dude, your view is my exact commentary on this band, I can't get enough of it.
You convinced me to buy the album on iTunes!
Or it's Rondo of Nightmare, opens with some kinda glitched out djenty bit and then HEAVY
I blame you for me watching lots of Babymetal related stuff Ross Clutterbuck , including this :D
If it gets you listening Jim then I take full responsibility!!
Ross Clutterbuck I now avoid anything you post that is accompanied by the phrase "I'll just leave this here" ;)
Megitsune and Uki Uki Midnight are my fave tracks so far.
"it it's good, it's good". Thanks Dom!
This is a great review, thank you!! Babymetal is just pure fun, I wish more people could stop being lame and realize that!!
The song is iine, with a capitalized first "I". Iine means "so good". It's also sometimes written as "Ii ne".
The next one you had trouble with is 4 no Uta (Song of 4). From babymetal.net/babymetal-translation/4-uta-song-4-english-translation/
"About Japanese Reading of Numbers
The number 4 has two readings in Japanese: “shi” from (ancient) Chinese, and native “yottsu” (yon, yo). Many Japanese associate the number 4 with death because both are read as “shi”, and they tend to avoid this number. For example, most parking lots lack #4 & #9 (both 9 and pain are read as “ku”)."
The song, "Ijime, Dame, Zettai" is an anti-bullying song. The title roughly translated is "No More Bullying".
Really the perfect time-capsule regarding BABYMETAL's introduction to the west... just before Sonisphere. Thanks for this!
Why are so closed mind?.
We are in 2015.
It is innovative and very great, besides the powerful of their songs is very great.
Please review Metal Resistance! Thanks.
this. please
Thought I would hate it, but love it. I rock it every workout. It is better because I don't speak Japanese and their lyrics is more lyrical noise. BUT...the metal is solid and they sample so many different genres.
Dom is my favorite person right now.
Thank goodness! I thought I was crazy, to think they are so awesome. They are great! Lovem! Keep smillin!
Good video mate, i'm hooked, this is joyful fun crazy mad brilliant music as music should be. Gotta see 'em live now. Cheers
I like your style, man. I'm gonna check this album out..
I think you gave them a pretty fair assessment. Thanks!
The song is called iine (2 "i"s), which roughly translates to "how nice". And Ijime Dame Zettai is an anti-bullying song. Nice video, by the way.
I think the last song that you are talking about is Catch Me If You Can which is about playing tag or hide and seek.
He is actually talking about Ijime Damme Zettai, which talks about bullying.
Daniel Fuentes I was referring to the song that he liked from the album but can't remember the name and the clues were growling voices and death metal tune so it's Catch Me If You Can.
*****
It can also be megitsune it also has a breakdown with growls/pigsqueals
omgosh i loved this review.
Baby Metal has amazing potential to become something big. Possibly bigger than today's pop stars.
Nyaha. I've always wanted to hear what Dom thought of Babymetal. He said they'd be great at Sonisphere...
bang on the money Dom, people seem to have this notion that metal is constrained by certain boundaries but they couldn't further from reality if they tried, there are no boundaries as such for metal, there are a multitude of genres and sub genres under the umbrella of the term metal, deal with it.
Agree with everything he said, when I first checked them out I thought i wouldn't like it, but that riff along with disco/rave sounds in the track Megitsune had me hooked
Brilliant, balanced, uncynical review.
I remember the Forum gig - amazeballs
my supervisor at work introduced me to this band the other day and at 1st i didnt know what to think i was just sitting here like What is this!!!!! Lol its something ive never even heard of in 25+ years of listening to metal......and honestly its a nice change hope this band goes friggin huge all over the world \m/>_
Give Me Choco made impact because it exposed new musical possibilities for metal fans and producers alike. maybe a new metal genre is about to rise?
This is a great video and a really down to earth opinion from a true metal head. I got introduced to Babymetal earlier this year and really enjoyed the music and the performance. Hoping to go and see them live when they come to London again.
You going to their brixton gig then?
