Thanks, Taurusaud! That's me, the girl at the end, Miss Pickle. You are so right. I love this land. I believe that we are striving toward a new American freedom where we can freely express our unique ways of living based on our loves and talents. We will live more truthfully to ourselves and really experience happiness.
I’m not a fan of Donahue’s approach, but at the same time I’m thankful for these shows. I was never - nor have I ever had a desire to be - a Club Kid, but I find the whole phenomenon fascinating.
Man if I was asked to be on a talk show to express and explain my reasons for the way I am and what I do, I'd be seriously pissed and annoyed if the HOST of the show constantly cut me off and exaggerated the actualities of the situation I JUST explained. What is with this guy!
@ItsMeAgain0909 I haven't seen it yet, i've heard some people say they love it and others hate it.. i downloaded it a while ago but haven't gotten round to watching it yet
@ItsMeAgain0909 Yeah I saw the shockumentary before i watched this, i'm terrible with faces but thought it might have been her. Have you seen the movie?
@Taurusaud there's as much individuality now as there was in the 60s, and there was easily as much homegenuity in the 60s as now, esp the early and mid 60s.
He's actually a hippie at heart he was a hippie who went to college in the late 60s and was actually really good guy to and helped out a lot of his guests should look him up a little bit more than just saying that in fact he helped several of these kids later on thank you might have paid for one kids rehab after their first visit he congratulated them and told them how much he admired them because for a group that was predominantly gay and oppressed by other subcultures and in a lot of cases their own families and peers they grabbed the world by the balls and created their own that they could kick people the popular people out of as I said Phil Donahue was a hippie so he could relate to the nomadic if they won't let you in or help you rise above a little bit and do nothing but oppress you you go out and try to change it. Donahue's generation got a War stopped the club kids generation helped gay kids get acceptance from their family friends and peers either him or haraldo I can't remember which one offered to help pay Michaels legal expenses after the rats on crack attack happened but Michael plea ended up bargaining and didn't need the Financial help. most of those talk shows were a work like the pro wrestling business so some of that attitude that your disliking is not Donahue at all that's not how he acts and who he is in real life believe me.
@Nahxsua no that is a joke. she knows them. she's friends with them,.when she says their freaks they are all laughing. they know each other. it was a joke.
@allenpc ru joking? He's probably retired considering he's about 100 years old haha. but if i were you i would be asking where some of these club kids are now!
I agree and disagree with Michael's statement on American culture. Yes, there was youth culture before the club kids, there has been since the coining of the term "teenager" in the 50's. There were greasers, hippies, rock and rollers, punks...., a Lot of culture happened in the US, just very far apart in time so it seems alien to the newer generation. It all boils down to rebellion.
@ILOVEMARILYNMANSON89 That's what made this a perfect platform for them; It was one where they got to battle societies idea of what is accepted. The funny thing is many people are in the same boat emotionally as they are in this present day; But they hold it all in and don't express themselves. It is a shame that we very nearly torture ourselves to be accepted, when it is more important to accept ourselves first to embrace the differences of others. I like the girl at 3:26 haha
3:26 Notice she doesn't get ragged by Donahue because she blends in. Everything is about conformity rather than individuality. America wants to be original, but they preach conformity in the workplace, which is why the approach the Club Kids had was more spiritually and financially rewarding. They took the risk of being individuals and being chastised to enjoy what they do for a "(9-5)"
It was a phase that could have gone on - It imploded from within. Drugs, greed, tolerance from the main stream made it 'not so different' anymore. The circus only comes to town for a short run, otherwise people would get bored with the circus . . . Problem is this circus never took the show on the road. New Yorkers bore easily. Alig's attempt to revive it went nowhere - By then he was more an enigma over the murder then anything he had done prior. You think?
He was a ring leader cover a story that made big ratings at the time just like the club kids, it's a business thing. I personally think he was secretly turned on by the whole genre, hehe. As am I.
It's funny seeing the difference in talk shows now then and now. Donahue won't shut the fuck up and let anyone get their own point across. But now, you watch Springer and he barely says 3 words during the whole episode. Ahh, talk shows... a sad low point of our society.
That girl with the piercing can take SEVERAL seats... calling people freaks when she looks like a club kid her damn self! And Phil is rude & so NASTY, grabbing women like he owns them. I would've slapped him silly.
Pretty sure she was joking. It's hard to believe, but Phil Donahue was considered an extremely feminist man at the time; watching him just put his arm around women without their consent is cringe-inducing now, good to see how far we've all come.
It looks like she had a make down and is actually friends with the club kids. See how much hey crack up when she says they're freaks? Plus her make up looks like a cool off duty club kid lolool
0:57 asks a question doesn't even listen. She noticed how much he really cared what they had to say. He kept walking away from them to go talk to women in the audience. He ran to them. Why did he bother having them on he doesn't seem to care what they have to say. He already had a preconceived notions of them and he may be right about some of what he says but he was just ignorant to them. Sheesh I could go on but I won't.
@ItsCJD I'm not sure who her parents are but it does sound like her parents are wealthy and have high status. I saw a video of James St. James interviewing Jenny Talia, and she said that she went to a dinner function for President Clinton. Supposedly President Clinton tried grabbing her butt. LOL. She said at the moment her parents are down in South Ameriica helping people while she is the Director or something for the Boys and Girls Club.
People getting mad at Phil are really dumb. The premise of the show is that he defends the point of view of the public and plays devil’s advocate to get both sides… You can clearly tell he digs what the club kids are doing here.
this donahue guy is really really irritating... I think I would end up punching him in the face if he ever go that close to me and would non-stop talk over me...
A lot of Donahue's answers were tongue-in-cheek, devil's advocate type responses. You would have to have listened to the man really carefully with unbiased ears. He was not bad at all. He only asked what others would have asked and pondered.
I'm so disgusted by Donahue's sarcasm and unprofessional hosting. He's done nothing but mock his guests and pass judgment. Seems to me he's the "outcast."
Phil is just faster than all of this clubKids, and, for god sake, he knows the answer before he ask, coz it's stereotypical answers for any "rebelian" subculture. i love ClubKids, but some of you unjust to Phil.
I hate that melting pot analogy. It says that the US has a bunch of different cultures that have gotten lost while melting together into one giant american blehh.. Use Canada's analogy. We call it a giant mosaic. Like a melting pot except the traditions of the original cultures are preserved. If you want to get technical anyway.. I meant no offense.
Thanks, Taurusaud! That's me, the girl at the end, Miss Pickle. You are so right. I love this land. I believe that we are striving toward a new American freedom where we can freely express our unique ways of living based on our loves and talents. We will live more truthfully to ourselves and really experience happiness.
how DARE phil donahue touch these people's faces??
"Here's a Cornell graduate selling popsicles in a nightclub. Oyyyy ..."
This made me see red. Seriously.
Me too! I remember watching this and wishing I could go to NYC and be a part of this. Sigh.

"I do this for religious reasons"
I’m not a fan of Donahue’s approach, but at the same time I’m thankful for these shows. I was never - nor have I ever had a desire to be - a Club Kid, but I find the whole phenomenon fascinating.
I need friends like they :P
"Thank goodness you and I are STRAIGHT people--" did he really just say that
I wonder if any of the kids bought a transcript or video of the show. Only $24.99!!
yes they did. not on this part but it showed when she was talking
Man if I was asked to be on a talk show to express and explain my reasons for the way I am and what I do, I'd be seriously pissed and annoyed if the HOST of the show constantly cut me off and exaggerated the actualities of the situation I JUST explained. What is with this guy!
hahahah!!! 2:26 "yeah im drug free..."
I wonder if i can still get a vhs copy ???
"Ya I'm drug free (rolls eyes)" haha what a liar.

@ItsMeAgain0909 I haven't seen it yet, i've heard some people say they love it and others hate it.. i downloaded it a while ago but haven't gotten round to watching it yet
exactly!
@ItsMeAgain0909 Yeah I saw the shockumentary before i watched this, i'm terrible with faces but thought it might have been her. Have you seen the movie?
2:25 😂😭 Same
@Taurusaud there's as much individuality now as there was in the 60s, and there was easily as much homegenuity in the 60s as now, esp the early and mid 60s.

Is Sophia really Carmen Carrera?
No

Anyone else here in 2020 after Michael Alids death?

lets hope Donahue he never comes back to TV ...
LMAOO!!
It was a phase that could have gone on - It imploded from within. Drugs, greed, tolerance from the main stream made it 'not so different' anymore. @santos4792 well, actually, Leigh Bowery created the club kids
Jenny must have got in big trouble after the episode aired.
@angel270503 exactly.
Now it's truly rebelious NOT to get a piercing or a tattoo
I have to agree America can be very bland... I'm from upstate NY and nothing has changed since the day I left...10 years ago
He was a ring leader cover a story that made big ratings at the time just like the club kids, it's a business thing. I personally think he was secretly turned on by the whole genre, hehe. As am I.
Omg! He touches their faces as if they're horses!!!

@vickymarie000 Yeah i actually loved the movie, What about you ?

You gotta hope he doesn't have bad breath...

Was that Gitsie? The girl in 'normal' clothing that they all knew?
2:25..that didn't seem very honest. x)
People getting mad at Phil are really dumb. The premise of the show is that he defends the point of view of the public and plays devil’s advocate to get both sides… You can clearly tell he digs what the club kids are doing here.

Phil is so mean!
James St. James is hot!
@Dagrecco1982 maybe not gay guys doing it but maybe straight men doing it would
this donahue guy is really really irritating... I think I would end up punching him in the face if he ever go that close to me and would non-stop talk over me...

Richie is so annoying! James is probably my favorite. I wonder if any of them had beef with Rupaul...
wait did they like hate each other or something?
Idk who hated who but there was a lot of drugs involved and eventually a murder...
Ana Graciela Exiga I love Richie!
Ru was part of the group but at this point he was starting to blow up.
Oh No! Beware of the geeks! You know those geeks and their crazy raping...WT Actual F!
LOL!!! She is hot, too.
one thing i do agree with, america has no culture at all. he was absolutly correct.
phill is too touchy feely....that wouldnt fly nowadays...
If he ever put his hand on me the way he did with half the women in his audience I would have punched him.
ive never seen phil donahue before now....was he always this rude to his guests?
richie s look really bothers me and I'm not sure why youd want to ever look like that
Um ok, thanks for stating the obvious?
I hate that melting pot analogy. It says that the US has a bunch of different cultures that have gotten lost while melting together into one giant american blehh.. Use Canada's analogy. We call it a giant mosaic. Like a melting pot except the traditions of the original cultures are preserved.
