Meanwhile glamour was defined as drinking urine. Their glamorous ringleader was a murderer that went to prison and died of an overdose. LMAO they was addicted to drugs hunny.
@ she’s inspired by way more than bowie. She takes stuff from all over the place. I could give a couple examples like her name is based on a queen song called radio Gaga and she had her looks like Leigh Bowery. People can be inspired by more than one person at a time.
Richie Rich is one of the TOP FASHION DESIGNERS IN THE WORLD!!! Heatherette, look it up!! You better WERK bitch!!! James st James is another SUCCESSFUL CLUB KID!! A FABULOUS AUTHOR!!! RUPAUL... Need I say more?! RUPAUL'S DRAG RACE have changed the lives of so many ppl including me!
The fact that the host says "do you let black people in?" Just shows how much of a backward thinker he is. This video is old and the scene is now more or less completely underground, from most mainstream media anyways .(obviously new media still keeps it alive, I follow the club kids on Facebook) but because of the extreme sudden outburst of it in the New York club scene it did shock everyone, being shocked by change is normal but it's acceptance that wasn't made, because we've began to fear change rather than accept it. At the end of the day people should be, and rightfully so, free to dress, look, decorate and express themselves in whatever way they choose. And why bother arguing over stupid comments by anti gay anti expressive anti artists anti club kid, morons who clearly got some sort of intrigue and therefore watched this video but just had to say something fucking idiotic about it because of their own standards and fears. By arguing back we feed they're insecurities. Having an argument in a UA-cam comment section is as useful as a chocolate fucking teapot. Long live free spirits, long live fabulous clothes, long live glitter and sequins and long live the club kids! Peace x
While their main idea of expressing themselves and be whoever they wanted to be is a positive message...after watching "Shockumentary", the craziness of the drugs and gross-out shock nature of their parties is just NOT, it's twisted, sick and that's something they NEVER talked about on these shows they appeared... Indeed, the looks are not the problem, it's great!...what was behind all that was the main problem and look how it ended...with the death of one of their own.
I am so sad we do not have these clubs. The club kids were not appreciated enough. I have a collection of costumes and makeup ideas that are just stored away with nowhere to take them. I have always wanted to create a place like this to go and have fun.
Off topic, but through a 20th century lense am AMAZED at how much touching Donahue does of his female audience members and guests. At the time, he was considered this wonderful male ally of feminism, but the hand-holding and hugging seems to be REALLY getting in their space without consent. On topic, you look fabulous, James St. James.
@babygaga4421 You could also say that the Club Kids "ripped-off" the Celebutantes (James St. James WAS a Celebutante before he was a Club Kid), and you could also say that the Celebutantes "ripped-off" Warhol's Factory Superstars. Gaga taking style tips from Club Kids, Celebutantes, etc., and making music statements that could be likened to Madonna, it's just her expressing her art in the age that she's living in, which has been influenced by all that's come to pass before.
Michael Alig was kind of long in the tooth to be a club kid? He was like a 27 year old, balding club kid, he was 10 years older than most of the other club kids.
lady gaga is being discussed because she is from new york and has been very open about the fact that the club kids have inspired her in many ways mainly her style..... no club kids... no gaga & how is she ripping them off ? shes is giving them credit she is sending pretty much the same message to a newer audience. im pretty sure they all are very happy about the fact they inspire one of the biggest pop icons right now!!!!!
I liked Kevin's speech. I was getting upset at Donahue lashing at them all for being out of controlled unfocused teenage brats, when he doesn't know them personally to accuse.
i think that interview is one of the best ones. if you compare it to the geraldo stuff which i find kinda boring..cause james not in it. and michael&james both look so beautiful there :D aaaaahah and richie is so funny.
I remember meeting Alig when he came do Dallas and I was throwing Raves at the time. Met at Canton Street warehouse (Where he met his longtime GF I think) Wow the club kids were crazy strange. Made our most eccentric look like dull boys. Really it was just too much insanity on parade. Like lets see how outrageous we can be.. one upmanship. Alig was pretty cool overall though and they were accepted but got out of control on drugs quite a bit. The movie Party Monster about Alig was great too and I even remember seeing Alig on P.Donahue too, I remember Keoki too.. what a JERK.
In 1976 I got paid to bring people into clubs on Hollywood boulevard and sunset the whiskey agogo etc etc and back then all he had to be was in my case good looking and kind of androgynous I appeal to men and women and it was a good gig. It all ended when I turned 20 because I was just too old
Hey guys! Really love the channel! You should visit Amy's Mythic Mornings. She has some great songs with her and her animal friends for the whole family to enjoy.
Shanna bol, Michael Alig and his accomplice were the only ones to go to prison, most of the key players in their group are still very much alive, but I find it most humorous that you said " who cares about them? they are all a bunch of nobodies." maybe this is true, but here you are watching a video about them 19 years after the fact. That says something. I doubt anyone but our own family members will be watching videos of most of us on UA-cam 19 years from now.
Prolem with Alig is he began to believe his own hype. And overused his own product. Eventually you outlive how outrageous you can be - - - Pr your welcome in a life that will eat you alive if you let it. If this had not occured - age would have caught up with him. The club scene can be mean - but more sad then that - forgetful. Fame is fleeting. Fake fame fades quicker. Sad story. I knowl. I lived it. - - Libertee Belle (The Strangest Act in Town)
When will you people learn that everything in life has been replicated. Nothing is original this is 2010 now it's all about reinvention. People have done everything since the beginning of time so nobody copies or "Rips" anyone off. It's all been done now it's time to reinvent and bringing something new for the new generation.
@babygaga4421 it doesn't matter nothing is original. The Club Kids were inspired by someone else too. If GaGa is making brave political stances about homosexuality in the armed forces then hey that is surely in the spirit of The Club Kids becasue it's about freedom and fighting prejudice
@BLAKPEARL69 It's actually Richie Rich, he is one of the successful club kids. He has a clothing line called Heatherette. It's funny because in the movie Party Monster Richie Rich is in it and Maccauley Culkin was in a move where he was named Richie Rich. Funny how things work out lol.
@mutinlupa Michael Alig is the only reason Limelight was what it was. He was the ORIGINAL club kid. So it makes sense he's going to be older than the other club kids. But he did start when he was younger obviously.
Whoa!! He just asked if black people get in and then tried to back himself up by saying, "Yea, but you want to have a certain image..." @_@ *slaps him* This wasn't filmed in the 1950's... wth?! LOL!
It is so ironic that at around the 9 min mark, Donahue asks if black people would get in to the clubs and then when a black woman asks a question he completely sideswipes her!!! Priceless!!
I MISS THE LIMELIGHT, THE SHAMPOO ROOM, THE GOTHIC KIDS, RESERECTION FRIDAYS, COMMUNION ON WEDNESDAYS, THE GIGER CHAIRS, THE CREAKY CATWALKS. NEVER DRANK OR DID DRUGS THERE, bUT HAD TONS OF FUN DANCING AND bEING AROUND bEAUTIFUL PEOPLE.
Phil is a great guy ... and will always be the catalyst for Oprah ... they are both "out there" and "in your face" ... but Phil did open the door for this kind of dialogue ...
James st. james was the only one that did it cuz he loved it and a few others but I want to point out that Michael just did cuz of the seen. Im my honest opinio.
i like how "the club kids" try to validate what they do and make it seem like it's all just innocent fun and games. anyone catch Donahue asking if "black people" are allowed to get into the clubs, like it's 1959 or something and the most shocking part is that the clubs are not segregated. way to stay on top of the issues there Donahue.
"Hey, let me invite you to my show for your story and then berate you..." -_-
what? youre a moron. its a talk show. they werent forced on there.
"I'm not addicted to drugs, I'm addicted to glamour"
Meanwhile glamour was defined as drinking urine. Their glamorous ringleader was a murderer that went to prison and died of an overdose. LMAO they was addicted to drugs hunny.
Phil Donohue didnt see the giant elephant in this room: drugs.
michael alig could barely talk he was so fucked up.. jeeze, dude looked like he was BLASTED
eazyb123123 he is soooo wasted... this is one big PSA.
@@bryaneff he was totally coked up
Exactly
I feel like these people are the original Lady Gaga.
+zombiecrush Where do you think Lady Gaga got all her idea's from?
Tbh she is actually influenced by David Bowie
Nihal Yüzbaşeva she's from New York so obviously she's been influenced by the past club scenes too
Truth. She also stole the lead singer of Missing Person’s look.
@ she’s inspired by way more than bowie. She takes stuff from all over the place. I could give a couple examples like her name is based on a queen song called radio Gaga and she had her looks like Leigh Bowery. People can be inspired by more than one person at a time.
FYI: Michael Alig (first guy Donahue talks to) is the guy Macaulay Culkin plays as in Party Monster.
This guy's sarcastic and pompous tone makes this video unwatchable
Richie Rich is one of the TOP FASHION DESIGNERS IN THE WORLD!!! Heatherette, look it up!! You better WERK bitch!!! James st James is another SUCCESSFUL CLUB KID!! A FABULOUS AUTHOR!!! RUPAUL... Need I say more?! RUPAUL'S DRAG RACE have changed the lives of so many ppl including me!
Did anything ever happen to Kevin?
***** Define success.
Guy In Audience: "How long does the fantasy last?"
Michael Alig: "Until you kill someone."
Or o.d.
I don't know why I'm so fascinated by this
this just goes to show how unoriginal lady gaga is...
Ru Paul, Amanda Lepore, Richy Rich, James St. James All alive and well.
"You can overdose and die." Well that turned out prophetic.
And become a murderer....😒
And I oop
james st. james is so gorgeous! His outfits are amazing!
I love Phil Donahue.. he literally called them out backhandedly left and right with his grandpa glasses. And they liked him for it!
my dad and mom used to see them all the time in clubs and walking around. my dad used to know james st. james pretty well and angel
crayzey

It's kinda funny how the guy said it doesn't have to end but sadly being a club kid only lasted through the 90s but I love all of them ❤
Honestly, I may have gone for this had I been there and old enough at the time. Well, if I had been there anyway.
James had the coolest outfit of them all.
lol i like howthey asked if rupaul was some one they looked up to but rupaul was a club kid back in the day
The girl in the latex mask is AMAZING. My jaw dropped. GORGEOUS
And you are too :)
this nigga never got a reply lmaoo
She still is. And doing great things for the youth
While their main idea of expressing themselves and be whoever they wanted to be is a positive message...after watching "Shockumentary", the craziness of the drugs and gross-out shock nature of their parties is just NOT, it's twisted, sick and that's something they NEVER talked about on these shows they appeared...

I love the way they slagged on rupaul then but love and adore him now.
They’re all so damn high they can’t even settle down lol
I am so sad we do not have these clubs. The club kids were not appreciated enough. I have a collection of costumes and makeup ideas that are just stored away with nowhere to take them. I have always wanted to create a place like this to go and have fun.

"not doing any harm to anyone else"
who is the one with that huge thing on his head? is it James St James? he is fabulous and totally rocks 😍
That’s him.
This was the start of fame obsessed celebrity worship culture on the youth.
James St James is STUNNING
"Do black people get in?"
She is so right... There really wasn't anything to do in Connecticut back then!
"Do black people get in?"
oh my god I'm dying from laughter.
I don't know why I'm so fascinated by this
RICHY RICH! i love them all!!
Mike and Kevin at 7:14 were coked out of their minds. That is why Kevin is talking a mile a minute.
Man, these kids must have cleaned out Tish and Snooky's.
@babygaga4421 You could also say that the Club Kids "ripped-off" the Celebutantes (James St. James WAS a Celebutante before he was a Club Kid), and you could also say that the Celebutantes "ripped-off" Warhol's Factory Superstars. Damn! Donahue gets handsy with all the Females in the audience! Kind of creepy! 🤮
Michael Alig was kind of long in the tooth to be a club kid? He was like a 27 year old, balding club kid, he was 10 years older than most of the other club kids.
Has anyone ever heard of Studio 54? The Club Kid movement fascinates me, but were they pioneers? No, not at all.
i remember this like it was yesterday .. .loved the 90s club scene
My mom and I never missed CLUB KIDS on Donahue! Our mother taught us to be open minded in life,
James St James
Funny the reaction feom them when asked about RuPaul.
There used to be a door on the left side of the Limelight, 666 6th Avenue
This is what I imagined the people from the Capitol would be just like in the "Hunger Games".
I’m watching this in 2023 😮
Me too, James is a baby.
Michael is sooooo high in this video
I have Richie's cd single for "Magic."
I LOVE IT!!!! "no phone calls please program was recorded" Im watching this in 2010 LOL
2022 here lol
Lol the people in the audience are so smug and self-satisfied.. acting like they know better when really they don't know anything.
sophia looks like millie bobby brown
lady gaga is being discussed because she is from new york and has been very open about the fact that the club kids have inspired her in many ways mainly her style..... no club kids... no gaga & how is she ripping them off ? shes is giving them credit she is sending pretty much the same message to a newer audience. im pretty sure they all are very happy about the fact they inspire one of the biggest pop icons right now!!!!!
leslie nielsen had his own talk show?
I'd like to see this interview take place today. The 2012 version. Donahue and the remaining club kids.
its richie rich from heatherette!!! fabulous! wish i could have been a part of this movement.
Richie Rich...."I'm sooo bored!"
I wish I was a part of this scene.....
ooohhH!
MADISON thing
Kevin is cute
James st. James is an angel.
I liked Kevin's speech. I was getting upset at Donahue lashing at them all for being out of controlled unfocused teenage brats, when he doesn't know them personally to accuse.
I went to Limelight and all the clubs in Los Angeles at the time. That was the golden era! Now it just sucks like everything else.
Wow.. this might've *just* still been newsworthy in the UK circa 1983, but 1993??!!??
America. So outrageous.
i think that interview is one of the best ones. if you compare it to the geraldo stuff which i find kinda boring..cause james not in it.
and michael&james both look so beautiful there :D
aaaaahah and richie is so funny.

People who dress or club kids have evolve and make what we know as Raves and drag shows
Nothing like ole' NYC Nightlife!!
Richie Rich is one part of Heatherette and one of the Club Kids.
a shame Michael A didnt do his 'thing' to Phil right there on stage
@katanadondada ..ONE ONE EXCEPTION..CHAKA KHAN.. lol.
Some of you missed out on a golden age of night clubs in NYC. Will never be this interesting again.
Aliiiiiiig
I live for this and for those who think being a club kid is dead HA
Shanna bol, Michael Alig and his accomplice were the only ones to go to prison, most of the key players in their group are still very much alive, but I find it most humorous that you said " who cares about them? they are all a bunch of nobodies." maybe this is true, but here you are watching a video about them 19 years after the fact. Dumbass its a girl.

Donahue "Do BLACK people get in?" .. " because you want a sertainn cilnetel"
Donahue gos over to a black lady and then just skips her..
what a jerk.
Donahue was hilarious. What is he, America's conscience? LOL
Oprah knocked em all of cable though (Donahue, Geraldo and Sally J).
I predicted Michael wouldn’t make it 3 years after his release.
Whats wrong with having fun? Like this host does not drink all night and sleep with his high class escorts.
jenny talia is the bomb! i loved her shaved head & the ballerina outfit. but she looks craaazzzzy here too!
i like how "the club kids" try to validate what they do and make it seem like it's all just innocent fun and games.
anyone catch Donahue asking if "black people" are allowed to get into the clubs, like it's 1959 or something and the most shocking part is that the clubs are not segregated. way to stay on top of the issues there Donahue.
I have seen confederate flags at a lot of underground early club kids events and outlaw parties that are posted online
no, Jenni is Jenni Gitsie came after Mike went to Texas looking for new Kids after this show
@brandies8up what do you mean everything now is so fucked up and sad? why?
Instant nostalgia
why the hell are uu people talking bout GAGA. ITS THE FUCKING CLUB KIDS NOT LADY GAGA!
lol @ 1:22--A tongue ring was considered shocking back then. Wow.
