How can you possibly say that anything sounds worse than the Futaba linear switches? While I understand why someone would dislike the sound of MX Blues, they aren’t anywhere near as ear splitting as the squeaky Futaba switches.
Never got the fingernails on blackboards treatment back when the schools still used them. I compare that atrocity of a noise to scraping polystyrene or a whining CRT.
i never got it as a "treatment" either its just at uni we still use blackboards and sometimes i wake up on the wrong side of the board and the professor accidentally scratches the blackboard
Let me share a tale from my childhood: back in the 80's my father worked for Brazil's First Bank (Banco do Brasil) in the center of data processing (Cesec). One of the most noisy and loudest room was just a couple floors up where he actually worked: A medium sized room where almost 24/7 around 30 people typed vigorously into their, guess what?, Amstrad word processing PC's. It was so loud that it would literally echo down the avenue and could be heard almost anywhere in that building. I remember vividly that sound as I walked from my school towards his workplace every friday so he could take me to a video rental. Now I finally understand why that sound was so deeply engraved in my memories. Thanks (?) I guess lol
Yep, I like blues as well. I like the spring weight and the sound. It's just part of his shtick so he can't be objective about it anymore. It's fine though. I like MX browns too. I've owned many of the switches he's praised in past videos. Some are good to me, some are pretty underwhelming. Just have to realize it's all subjective.
Reece Conrad i understand, that hating cherry switches is ongoing gimmick here. Though i don't actually get it. I still consider getting keyboard with blues as a replacement for my kalih reds.
I don't mind MX Blues, and clones except for use in an office setting. In fact my main board at home being a 10 keyless Aula uses dampened Gateron Blues. I also have a Rosewill full size keyboard with Cherry MX Browns for my work keyboard, but the shift keys love to bind/stick at times, so might switch to the IBM kb-8923 I got for free from the e-waste pile at the local recycle drop off for free once I give it a good cleaning, and testing for my work board. Far as hating Cherry keys I get it as they can be overpriced compared to the clones, but they work well at least with the MX series, however the Cherry ML series I so want to love on my Cherry G8404100 board, but at the same time I want to send it off into the pits of hell fire because once used for a decent length of time they turn to scratchy piles of dog shit.
People love them, it's just this guy who's just way too cool for such a peasant switch. I mean, you can actually EASILY BUY new keyboards with those outside the USA!

Daniel Harris it's kinda hard, because they are quite different, even serve different purposes. And there's not enough good material out there to make separate top modern tactile, top modern clicky, etc. Worse, it wouldn't be very interesting.

The amstrad is incredible, they managed to make a keyboard that sounds like a spring jumping on an infinite tunnel! About the futaba vintage linear I think that when they were brand new they didn't squeak, it must be some sort of deposition inside the switch of something that decomposed on another part of the keyboard, or grease (maybe oil) drying out. Anyway the build tolerances of those switches should be incredible compared to the "state of the art" of nowadays, cherry switches.
Marco Toselli I think he made a video on these a long time ago and proved that these switches, even in perfect condition, squeak pretty badly. I think it is inherent to the design :P

I had a roommate who had a keyboard with Cherry MX Blues, and he would game late into the night. I never slept as well as I did after he moved out and I didn't have that high pitched click-click-clicking keeping me up anymore.
I actually have a board with some Futaba MA switches and I think that this particular switch is a perfect example of how your mounting plate, case materials and dimensions, and keycap profile and material really do define the sound signature. If you want to know what my board sounds like I'll be glad to upload a video demonstrating it :>
Honestly I don't hate the sound and feel of blues. To me the feedback is quite pleasant, though they are by far the worst on a hollow rattley board with unlubed stabilizers and ABS key caps. However if you get a relatively thonky setup with blues where it's only the switches making noise, it's quite nice really. Knockoff blues are hit or miss. Sometimes they feel better for typing but honestly they need to be lubed. I still prefer the sound over most membranes and laptop scissor keyboards, but then again that isn't saying much is it. It's all really personal preference though, and I really enjoyed the video!
The mx blue was honestly better sounding than some of the other. Definitely better than the 6th one for the uniform. At least it have no spine-shrieking scratches and the twang of coil.
This is a very specificly odd kind of an ASMR video. Your voice is deep and mellow but at the same time, I did not expect this much R-rated hate towards old keyboards. That's new to me. After decades of speaking English, I thought I had heard every possible offense in this language. You have proven me wrong. Thank you for the lesson! 😁
I own a £35 outemu blue switched keyboard, and I actually really like it's noise. Maybe it's because it's the only clicky switches I've heard in person, but I love them
^ This. People fail to realize how good MX blues and their knock-offs are if you're gaming/listening to music. The sound is very quiet the tactile feel stays the same.
I own a board with outemu blues and good lord are they awful. BOX Whites are a great alternative if you want a low tactility clicky switch without the rattly, plasticy bullshit.
After watching the video, I'd like to say something about the Futaba vintage linears. I actually recently bought a terminal off ebay with these, where the user handwired it and replaced all the switches with NOS ones. They don't exhibit any of that strange squeaking sound yours did. while still not terribly smooth, they sound a lot better, haha. shame the switches are around 100g, it's a bit tiring to type on it.
When he put mx blue at the top of the list I had to make sure this wasn’t uploaded on April fools because I thought he was joking 😂 never knew people hated blues THAT much
The only reason I didn't choose MX blues is because I didn't wanna wanna get a noise complaint from my neighbor and everyone living within a 1km radius of my house. Other than that, it feels pretty nice to type on.
I hate MX blue clones. I have bought Magicforce 68 with them and the rattle is hideous. Now I'm using BOX Blacks, but past me me decided on JD40 layout, which is annoying as fuck. At least it sounds nice.
The keycaps are also a terrible material. Thin and and hollow. l have them on a Gateron Brown board with Zealencio silencers and some small o-rings and they still sound cheap.
I can’t wait for the next one! I always like to hear your opinion on things, and I think that this video was great. Although I couldn’t disagree more with your most hated sound (I love my really loud outemus) I still really liked the video! Have a nice day
My 40$ Chinese keyboard came with otemu blues. It is super loud, but honestly well worth it for the price. Bought it right before I started watching your channel, so I didn't know anything about mechanical switches
I'm also using a clicky keyboard. It's a Havit keyboard with the same keys. The only complaint I have is that they are a bit loud, but they sound fine and feel good.
I was really excited when I got a keyboard a few years ago with Cherry MX Blue switches. I absolutely loved them... for maybe a few weeks. While I grew up with some beautiful sounding keyboards back in the day, the clicks in the Cherry MX Blue switches were surprisingly high pitched and tinny, not like the old IBM keyboards I remembered. I assumed that it was just me, but when I saw this video I watched it specifically to see if you'd mention the Cherry MX Blues. It feels good to know that it's not just me. They really don't have a great sound, despite all of the hype.
:P I knew MX Blue would be up there... TBF some really solidly built boards with thick caps cans sound alright with Cherry Blues, like not the worst thing ever, especially if it was a good batch that doesn't rattle. Buuut still not my cup of tea at all.. :) Having used both Cherry and the clones before I noticed that they had a strange effect where my ears would feel like they 'closed up' a bit, along with some kind of bass rumble from the effect of my ears doing this. I found this is called "acoustic stapedius reflex", and it is basically involuntary middle ear muscle contraction to protect against loud noise. I think the frequency of the click in blues is probably right in the upper register of a baby's scream, pretty awful! Gaterons and Outemus are the worst for this, really distracting to type with.
I used to work with someone that used a keyboard that sounded similar to that last one, it always sounded like someone jogging in place with nothing but Tic Tacs in their pockets. Thank god for headphones
A lot of people do and they're debatably better than Cherry MX although some people allege some switches have repeated input problems. He just hates the MX Blues and Gateron Blues are MX blue clones with a sound he hates even more.
People talk about Cherry switches being high quality. I don’t know about that, but their full keyboards certainly are not. I picked up their Cherry MX-Board 3.0 with blue switches, and it feels so cheap. Beyond that, the box boasts it has n-key rollover, which it bafflingly then defines as ‘up to 6 keys at a time’. Yes, that’s a *maximum* of 14. It’s often much lower, I’ve tested it.
I would have put Cherry MX blue in 1st position, in my own opinion. I can recorgnize the sound of them from a mile and they definitely do sound very bad. I would even prefer the sound of a Dell KB 212
Yeah they are shrill AF. When I got it as my first entry-level mech, I thought they were awesome but got old really fast. Having said that, try the Outemu Blues in person and you'll see why it's #1 in this list. It's so loud you cannot hear yourself think.
Alex Snitzer idk, I personally like the way MX Browns feel (particularly the less-scratchy RGB version), but I wouldn't say that the sound is bad since I've never tried an alps, kailh box, etc in person and that I would certainly agree that they sound better than MX Blues... (just a preference)
The tactility of browns almost doesn't exist if you press the keys fast enough, which is why I went with blues. The sound is also not a problem if you're wearing a headset.
I don't actually mind some of the MX Blue clones. I would take most any of them over actual MX Blues. The clones are indeed louder and slightly higher pitched, but the click is much sharper and less plasticy. The clones rattle much less. If you stick some thick PBT caps on them and use them in a board with a metal plate, they can sound pretty decent.
As soon as you mentioned the cherry blue clones my first thought was about the noise of those coming through game chat all the time. Thanks to the amazon marketplace for having about a billion cheap keyboards with those in them readily available.
Nelson For me at least clicky switches are mostly about tactility. But as it turns out the best ways of making a sharp, distinct tactile event basically all generate some noise. Sure non-clicky 'tactile' switches exist but the tactility is weak sauce compared to a good clicky switch.
Swan Donovan Um...I have though. Frankly I find it hard to understand how that is your pick for a counterexample. They're mediocre at best. Kind of like stiffer MX Browns. Even if we're only talking about tactile switches they're far from my favorites (which would probably be orange Alps BTW).
Before you comment: Just because you have MX Blues does not mean they are a good switch. Do yourself a favor and get Box Whites/Jades/Navies. They're better in every way, and cheaper as well.
Ye11ow no doubt. I had a cheap board with Outemo Blues and the earsplitting shitshow that they are made me almost swear off clicky switches as a whole, until I tried Navies. Holy hell...amazing keyfeel and a great sound. Built a board with them and I love it.
Look at it like people who drink a basic cup of coffee instead of coffee snobs going to an expensive high end coffee shop. You're not unusual, you're normal.
I think you're a bit jaded with cherry and clones. There's no way that the mouse piano is not the worst on this list. They deserve to be on the list, but not on 1 and 2.
Hey, this is a stretch but I kind of want you to review Apple's macbook keyboards. I want to know your opinion on their noise, travel and general feel.

I have 2 keyboards that have Outemu Blue Switches. One is the ACGAM AG6X and the other is Blackweb Mechanical Keyboard (Yes a real mechanical keyboard by Walmart, has newer Outemu Blue Bracket switches). I found out that their stock keycaps AMPLIFY the click-sound to ear-piercing levels. I proved this by swapping keycaps from a Compaq MX-11800 to the ACGAM and yes, Outemu sounds much quieter with MX-11800 keycaps. Maybe you should give your opinion on Outemu's newer blue "bracket" switches. To me, the noise level is a hair above a Model F AT (and I have 2 of them)

It's all really personal preference though, and I really enjoyed the video!
The mx blue was honestly better sounding than some of the other. Definitely better than the 6th one for the uniform. At least it have no spine-shrieking scratches and the twang of coil.
Cherry MX Blue Clones: The official switch of getting murdered by your coworkers and you online gaming buddies!
typing this on a board that i bought a 120 pack of gateron blues for they dont sound nearly as bad as cherry mx blues
2:57 THIS IS AN INSTRUMENT!
I own a £35 outemu blue switched keyboard, and I actually really like it's noise. Maybe it's because it's the only clicky switches I've heard in person, but I love them
I have gateron blues
and I dont find them that horrible.
Maybe because I have closed headphones and dont hear anything with it on.
I had wondered when a cherry switch would finally make it to the top of one of your lists, and I'm glad it's this one!
Yes, I know that these switches don't always sound like this, hence why they were at 3, not 1. But they have a strong propensity to xD .
lol, please don't say that. while i do have like 100 extra NOS switches, i don't wanna desolder a handwire build anytime soon. :P
2:40 that scared me
Wait until he puts Outemu dustproof blue stems on Outemu sky blue housings, aka the blue bombs.
When he put mx blue at the top of the list I had to make sure this wasn’t uploaded on April fools because I thought he was joking 😂 never knew people hated blues THAT much
They sound awful. It's an ear piercing sort of sound.
Blues are great
The only reason I didn't choose MX blues is because I didn't wanna wanna get a noise complaint from my neighbor and everyone living within a 1km radius of my house. Other than that, it feels pretty nice to type on.
my ears died on 2:57
ZD Revered I died at 2:10
4:25 doesn't sound too bad to my ears, kind of a lighter, hollower version of the IBM buckling springs.
Hearing the gaterons was like the aural equivalent of witnessing domestic abuse in progress.
Your hearing must be going. The squeaky Futaba ones make my ears hurt.
you sound like you'd know
I like the way you Xpress yourself, keep going with these fantastic videos, I really appreciate your work.
Thanks for uploading this Thomas. Finally a video for us who doesn't like a good sounding keyboard, which is no one.
If I could go back in time to high school, I'd make "Roger me sideways and don't forget the applesauce" my senior quote
I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS
i swear you have the absolute best insults
I hate MX blue clones. I have bought Magicforce 68 with them and the rattle is hideous. Now I'm using BOX Blacks, but past me me decided on JD40 layout, which is annoying as fuck. At least it sounds nice.
7:20 its an open body keyboard which is why it sounds rougher than the cherry mx blue keyboard one
I own some other Otemu Blue keyboards, and, no the sound doesn't get any better.
It certainly doesn't help but even when using a loose switch the clones are much louder than MX blue
Zurc I had accounted for that ;) .
The keycaps are also a terrible material. Thin and and hollow. l have them on a Gateron Brown board with Zealencio silencers and some small o-rings and they still sound cheap.
The g80 shown also doesn't have spectacular keycaps. They're PBT but very thin.
I have a bag of Aliaz silent tactile switches that literally ping due to the scratchy springs. You should give them a try!
Bought it right before I started watching your channel, so I didn't know anything about mechanical switches
i am literally watching this video on that outemu blue keyboard rn.
All hail MX blue knock-offs, they sound and feel better for less money.
Me too and i like them a lot
I'm also using a clicky keyboard. It's a Havit keyboard with the same keys. The only complaint I have is that they are a bit loud, but they sound fine and feel good.
How do you watch a video on a keyboard?
same
if ur hating clicky switches the most why didnt u put all the clicky switches on the list?
Smith-corona
2020 me: interesting
*Use a headset*
I used to work with someone that used a keyboard that sounded similar to that last one, it always sounded like someone jogging in place with nothing but Tic Tacs in their pockets. Thank god for headphones
God I forgot how horrible blues sound, glad I have a red keyboard and model f
I love how chyros couldn't even bother to get a towel to prevent the Smith Coronas from moving around while typing lmao
I actually like outemu/gateron switches .
It’s often much lower, I’ve tested it.
before watching: mx blues have got to be in here xD
I really hated Kalih Speed Golds that came on a K-Type I picked up on ebay. Thankfully I managed to flip it within a week.
A little surprising he didnt place MX brown on this list...
andrew arvianto People love to shit on the MX brown for some reason.
Still suck though
As soon as you mentioned the cherry blue clones my first thought was about the noise of those coming through game chat all the time. Thanks to the amazon marketplace for having about a billion cheap keyboards with those in them readily available.
Chyrosran22 if you really wanna die, or go deaf, out a nice SA keycap set on those Otemu s! You'll want to die instantly! :D
*WANING*
I really don't know why they would make a keyboard intentionally obnoxiously loud a selling point. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for linears.
Nelson For me at least clicky switches are mostly about tactility. But as it turns out the best ways of making a sharp, distinct tactile event basically all generate some noise. Sure non-clicky 'tactile' switches exist but the tactility is weak sauce compared to a good clicky switch.
Kevadu you haven't tried tactile space invaders
Swan Donovan Um...I have though. Frankly I find it hard to understand how that is your pick for a counterexample. They're mediocre at best. Kind of like stiffer MX Browns. Even if we're only talking about tactile switches they're far from my favorites (which would probably be orange Alps BTW).
I laughed so hard during this entire video. Many, many thanks.
LOL, no surprise to see a MX switch on there, I have tried them all and the only one I sort of liked was the MX Clear switch.
Built a board with them and I love it.
lordlors not really a 'production' board, but you can buy boards from KBDFans and have them build it for you with Navies.
I'll let you know that I have a Cherry MX Red keyboard and so that is literally the best keyswitch in the world - no competition
Nope, best in the world - no question. Then it will be a bit crap when I start using other switches.
Nope, any switch I'm using at the time is automatically the best in the world. All else is trash.
The sound of you hitting the Amstrad Board will never not be funny to me, waiting for the day it falls apart.
I use Outemu blues, and I love them.
I must be unusual.
Look at it like people who drink a basic cup of coffee instead of coffee snobs going to an expensive high end coffee shop. You're not unusual, you're normal.
2:29 You forgot to throw it across the room and say "Agh fuck it!"

1. Chinese knock off Cherry MX Blue
Andrzej Luxanna Roztoczynski Best keyboard: O-ringed MX browns on every key except the space bar, which has the loudest, most obnoxious switch possible.
snick snick snick snick THWACK snick snick snick THWACK snick snick snick snick snick THWACK snick snick...
Andrzej Luxanna Roztoczynski hehehe nooo
All mechanical keyboards*
But the Chinese knock offs are actually better.
LaughTrack, You’re probably a Chinese prompting your own country.
i tried to fall asleep to this as ASMR.
*i never woke up.*
I think the MX Blues sound fine.
To me, the noise level is a hair above a Model F AT (and I have 2 of them)
*_"SUMMON THE GOD OF SPOONS!!!"_*
Also, mitsumi miniature mechanical switches, besides being terrible to type on, are also terrible sounding. Mainly because they're always binding
thx for the waning
this is how the keyboards in school sound
