MK9 was the sweet spot, MKX improved upon MK9 and I personally like MKX the best, but MK11 just overhauled the mechanics too much, combos kinda suck, and fights feel slow. MK11 lacks the speed and intensity of previous games.

It depends on the character: Sektor D1 is -15 on block, -9 on crouching opponent hit, -7 on standing opponent hit (!!!), and Smoke D1 is -13 on block, -1 on crouching opponent hit, +1 on standing opponent hit. D3s are generally better, Sektor D3 is -8 on block, +9 on crouching opponent hit, +2 on standing opponent hit. Smoke D3 is -7 on block, +10 on crouching opponent hit, +3 on standing opponent hit. By the time of this tournament players knew how plus/minus things were, that's why you can see Gross (Sektor) doesn't use any pokes in this clip, while Waffles uses a bunch of D3s.
Smoke got free d1s on block in this game because his smoke bomb cancel would catch you trying to push a button every time! His counter poke and poke game was ridiculous but of his smokebomb and ridiculously fast b2 overhead
Most of the things that are broken in mk9 are kept safe from the abuse of noobs behind a fairly large wall of execution. Like that smoke reset is not easy to pull off. Only true smoke mains are getting that every time.
