- Honda CBR1000RR R Fireblade SP Review | What's the bike like to live with as road rider?? Back in the early Spring this year Honda kindly loaned me the awesome CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP for a couple of weeks so I could get to know the bike - here's the conclusion of my time with the machine and whether, as a run of the mill road rider, I could live with such a thoroughbred bike....

Thanks for this. While at my advanced age, a sport bike has gone from my everyday/only bike to my choice for a 1-2 hour blast on a sunny day, I love the idea that we can just go down to the shop and buy a bike with better performance than a $200k sports car.
This is exactly what i have mine for.
Im a car geek and trust me, a Honda cbr1000rr r sp is faster than any stock $800K car. It’s literally only heavily tuned super cars or some stock hypercars than can match the speed of these bikes. It blows my mind what you get for the money if you compare that to road performance cars.
I don't do track days and I'm probably too old for that riding position, so I'm never going to buy a bike like this... But that doesn't stop me admiring Honda for building it. I notice you didn't get Mrs Flyer to try out that comfy pillion seat!
I did try!
I use my CBR1000rr strictly for touring. I gave up my FJR to go for something lighter. I did a 13,000 Km ride in June this year and the bike was flawless. I raised my bars 3" and dropped the pegs 0.50" and mounted a pair of Yamaha FJR hard bags on it. The perfect lightweight tourer for me. You don't need a paddock stand to oil the chain. Apply oil, roll bike forward, rinse, repeat. When you're away from home, there's no other way and it only takes 1-2 minutes. Reset your trip odometer each time you fuel up. I refuel before I hit 150 miles.
Great review. Of all the reviews I have seen you are the only one who talks about what it is like on a normal day to day use. Thank you. Most others act like you need to ride it to the track and don't touch it again until you go back to the track.
Last Blade I rode was an 09 model. I have to confess to having a soft spot for the Honda. I have yet to ride a sportsbike with all the latest rider aids. I'm used to analogue bikes, but not the latest versions.
From what I can glean Honda have nailed this one.
Like you said unless you're prepared to risk proper fines or jail its a no for the road unfortunately. Otherwise its just an expensive trinket!
I think it looks superb. Thanks for your input Andy.
I enjoyed it as ever.
Ride safe sir.
Another excellent comprehensive assessment of Honda's flagship! I love the bike except the front mudguard which looks a bit out of date to me! Great to see the outakes back!!
I’m a similar rider like you, sticking more with the plush and the feel of premium liter bikes rather than taking them on the track. I test rode triple R SP couple of weeks ago. Amazing machine. But being a sucker for comfort and touring on sport bikes, my double RR SP and gixxer are way better. This triple R is like a supermodel , a complete joy to the eyes, great for an intense short term ride, but not meant for me to wife it up. Great review.
Thank you Brandon - we're spoiled with good bikes these days aren't we....
Towards the end of the video, I still wanted to hear about the power band, the exhaust sound, and the fun factor. You discussed all three. Thanks MF for a very detailed review! This bike is not for me, but I’m glad bikes like this exist.
I'm so glad you do Night rides. Here in the eastern United states many sport bike riders mostly ride at night when the roads are empty.
Beautiful bike. Envy you riding it. At 72 years young (and two heart surgeries) I no longer ride sport bikes but enjoy watching high quality videos about them. My first motorcycle was a 1988 Kawasaki Ninja 600 (after completing a German riding course) and I rode that bike all over Europe. Had to sell it before I returned to the states (I worked for the US Government) due to the specs on the bike. Still remember it with fondness. Great high quality videos.
Thnaks for watching Ray - and for the kind words! All the best - A
Excellent review I’m looking a buying 1 of these and this has helped a lot brilliant keep the great content coming
Thanks, will do!
Theres a bloke that goes by my house nearly every day on his cbr 1000rr r and he has an exhaust on it and its one of the best sounding bikes I’ve ever heard!
Lovely machine but definitely a 2nd or 3rd bike, that said a very expensive 2nd or 3rd bike. My big issue is it only could only be really enjoyed on track then again it is so expensive to risk on the track there in lies the conflict.
Thank's Missenden, I really enjoy your reviews. As an American I've always appreciated the more practical character of British motorcycle press that seems a bit less like breathless regurgiation of PR materials than ours. Perhaps is the poor weather or that MCs are seen as a more legitimate means of transport that over here.
Poor weather?!! How very dare you sir!!! ;0)
Have owned two previous model Blades, Great bikes, Nice looking bike but very pricey (as lots are now) Not for old blokes like me . Easy to read TFT ,and yes it does change background colour .Good review as always.Blade not a piece of art like a Panagale. Best styling point is the Winged Badges on tank imo.
Great review! Real world rider one. Excellent. Thanks for that. Keep that way.
Much appreciated!
Great video. Fully agree. I’d love one but it’d be a waste for me too. Perfectly happy with my tricked up 2009 blade
You're totally right about the lights not showing up at night with your camera's! It looks as if you're suicidal riding without lights, of course you're not, as you say, but it looks weird looking at just a tft screen riding down the road on its own..?! Great review and lovely bike that Honda has made but not for me these days.
It’s really good to see someone knowledgable review a bike you are unlikely to own as I’m more of a Classic rather Sports person. It doesn’t make this bike any less great, just different. So again, another great review with subtle humour. Thank you. Now here is a little question: Not that you would overtake at the speed limit of 70 mph (ahem..) but if you did, would you change down a few cogs or just open the tap in sixth and get blasted forwards?
This bike probably warrants a change down (infact I rarely got past 3rd gear on this - in 3rd you'd be fine)
Great lookung bike ive got a 2004 fireblade which ive toured Europe with its not too bad dont how much different the riding position is thumbs up from me
I'm a modeller I'm building this Bike as a high detailed scale model just now it's absolutely stunning the kit is just outstanding I love these video's for the tiniest of detail you can't see in photo's getting that heat stain on the titanium exhaust is a challenge but having fun lol
Very cool!
Love your reviews, such a nice bloke 👍🏻
Thank you kindly!
1st of your videos that I've watched and I really appreciated the format, great overall review sir.
Thank you kindly - what kept you?!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Just had not come across your channel until I was searching for some Fireblade content!
Would love to ride one! Great video!
I rode to Queensland from Melbourne years ago. Once I had had toughened up after the first 2 days it was easy. However, now I am older I am glad I have a Tiger 1200 for longer rides.
Nice review Andy 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks 👍
She is a beauty to behold for sure. I would probably drop it (or any bike actually) whilst backing around in a circle. Good job TMF!!
Looks good and from what you said, rides good, think I’m too old for it though
Still the best looking sport bike I've ever seen.
Beautiful lush paint scheme on these.
I was watching another UA-cam bike review yesterday where the language was a bit choice. Not that I noticed but my wife interjected “that’s not the Missenden Flyer, he wouldn’t use language like that”. So there you go Andy, another TMF fan by association 🤣.
Nice one - I don’t understand why some channels think swearing on videos is a good thing…apart from the fact you can’t monetise the content I don’t think it makes you come across as particularly pleasant…..but everyone to their own and I have been known to let the odd expletive to slip in times of stress….
Great vlog....v enjoyable. As you said sounds like an F1 car. Whilst I'm sure as you say it is easy to ride I hope anyone investing in one does some serious training as the skill level to get full benefit from it is very high imo..
What is it with bikes like these that makes me want to forget about all the day to day impracticalities, the lack of comfort and the idiosyncracies? And just buy the damn thing anyway haha. Thanks for the video Andy, loved it!
Equivalent of super cars. Just beautiful and fast items. Most of them anyway.
Agreed all round - who needs practical!
Rutger 👍. 100% !
Im so in love with this bike
Looking at total lack of tread on that rear tyre you'd have to be a brave man to ride that in heavy rain. Gorgeous looking bike though.
Video request: garage tour please!
Not looking to rob you, just want to see how well you’ve organised everything and get some inspiration!
It’d be easier than pausing and trying to zoom in on the background. 😉
P.s. Your longer guides are great, really practical.
Funnily enough Richard I’ve just recorded one…coming soon!
A tool roll is over egging it a bit 🤣🤣. Gotta love sports bikes though, uncomfortable, rubbish in traffic but so rewarding on the right roads. Top entertainment btw👍👍…………and I would of liked to see you give it a handful just once 😉🙈
Beautiful looking bike, a comparison vid with the ‘ordinary’ CBR1000
Special bike for sure.Thanks.
Not for me... but what a machine...I would love to have a go tho... Great review as always.
Nice review. Lovely bike but way beyond my capabilities. As to sports bikes round the world Nick Sanders did a round the world trip on a Yamaha R1 in 2005. Sjaak Luccasen also did it on a R1. But the least appropriate touring bike award should go to Gary Inman crossing the Sahara on a Benelli 1130 TNT
Fantastic looking bike and quality….deals around now for quite a bit less than retail…
Seen a couple for £18500 brand new and that was the SP models👍🏻
Wow….
Thanks for posting. Love the color scheme. Nice to see a non-black, non-gray motorcycle. I have seen it at a local shop and in terms of appearance, I would say is in the top five liter bike category. Of course, just my personal opinion. ymmv. :)
“Ymmv”??
@@TheMissendenFlyer sorry. "ymmv" = "your mileage may vary". In other words, you might have a different opinion than mine.
Got you, not heard that one before....cheers
@@TheMissendenFlyer Semi common in the USA. I suspect a cultural thing, like "giving it the beans", "niggles", etc... ;)
Hye, big fan of the videos. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
What is your jacket at around 14 minutes in? When you getting motion lotion
Yet another good report, though on a bike I wouldn't necessarily buy. As they say horses for courses, and for doing a urine test in that position......😂. Also totally agree with the keyless ignition debate. Wouldn't be a deal breaker if I was to buy a new bike, but pointless if you have to use the key for everything else but starting it up.
Thanks Mr Flyer, what a beautiful bike and (it would seem) very easy to ride at "normal" speeds on the road - but why would you buy one for that? The night riding sequence had my nerves jangling as I "rode with you" with next to zero visability lol. I enjoyed your informative, humorous and chatty review style as always. :>)
Thabnk you Peter! Appreciated!
Another good video TMF
Interesting I owned a 2011 blade for over 8 years and even toured France on it. It was an amazing road bike for a sports bike which I'm sure anyone else who owned that generation of blade will agree with . That bike was only £11,000 new too. How things change in 10 years. This new one seems a far worse road bike I wouldn't want to tour my local town on it now and its over twice the price. I'm 50 next year and full on sports bikes are a thing of the past to me. Now ride a Z1000SX which is a perfect do it all bike. Btw what about Nick Sanders for someone who's toured the world on sports bikes. He's done it several times on R1's Amazing man.
Sportbikes at night are a distinct pleasure… definitely prefer well-lit highways, but it’s a joy at night
This is the best answer to the fuel gauge I've found online! It seems all the Fireblades CBRs don't have a gauge!
"It's quite simple really.
The number tells you how much fuel in gallons you have used since hitting reserve.
When the light comes on you have 0.77 gallons of reserve fuel left.
if the number gets up to 0.7 you are pretty much running on fumes.
How many miles obviously depends on how you ride and how accurate it is I don't know." People are chancing it and running dry at 0.7 n pushing to the pump! So at 0.4 find fuel A.S.A.P lol
Good stuff, not the bike for me but I can appreciate a good track bike.
Nice review as always, many thanks. Quick Q: What kind of audio/mic setup do you use in your helmet? Tried a few but not able to get the proper 'studio' quality like yourself. Tips / Hardware suggestions?
Great content as usual 👍 I’m not sure whether I missed that point but what about heating, say compared to the Panigale? Thanks and ride safe ✌️
Compared to a Panigale there is no heating! On this bike, not an issue....
Just came across this channel and what a channel it is!
Fantastic content, very entertaining.
I’m just starting my bike journey, have you ever ridden a zx6r (636) 2015+?
If so what are your thoughts.
Keep up the great work!
Hey Liam welcome along - m'fraid I've not ridden the ZX6R....sorry!
Beautiful looking machine. Would like to have one just to sit and admire it. 👍
You and me both!
What an amazing machine.
It really is!
Moto Morini please, the mysterious Italian. Like to see some reviews of their great range.
That name, though. Reminds me of the SNL skit with “more cowbell” but in this case “needs more R.”
I would rather have my CBR600RR for fun my VFR Crosstourer to tour on and my Forza for getting to work and together still cheaper than the new blade. Well done Honda for making it incredible bike and well done you for the review 👍
My perfect bike!
You can pick up a 10 year old Blade for 5 grand and scare the beejeesus out of yourself. Awesome bikes. I can't see any justification for spending 24K on a bike for road use in the UK. Can't knock Honda though. A 10 year old Blade for a 1/4 of the price of a new one is the rational way to go if you want to experience race bike performance on our crappy roads. There are plenty of very pampered low mileage Blades that have never seen a drop of rain for a fraction of the price. 175BHP compared with 214BHP for the latest SP model isn't gonna mean jack to most of us mortals who want to stay alive.....unless of course you're just minted and can afford the ego trip
HI Andy, great video, Ive had a blade 18 plate RR since start of the year, first ever Honda and really impress by its quality finish and mechanically too, all class by Honda as expected. Was thinking about getting a Gopro on it at some stage but don't wanna deface the bike in any way as its too nice, whats the connector you have on your mirror on the video ? is it a clear picture without shaking / vibrations ? and would you recommend it ? Thanks Andy
Ummm… TMF… why is your garage so empty?!? Where are your other bikes?!?! Great review as always:)
Outside - I just made space for the filming....
" I haven't seen another video showing you the light's at night, so I may as well be the first. Now..... the Gopro won't show you the lights in this video, so you'll have to take my word for it......."...😂😂😂
'And for those of you watching in black & white, that's the one behind the pink . . .'
Honda really have done an amazing job with this bike. If i win the lottery I'll treat myself to 1.
Good plan.....
such a great video and bike. thank you! but that music tho... new software? ;-)
Nope - I just purchased some licences for using a music library so thought I'd make use of it!
@@TheMissendenFlyer I love that! trying new things :)
Yes I've had mixed feedback though - some hate it, some like it....
@@TheMissendenFlyer sounds like life. I love your channel. It also persuaded me a year ago to by the Africa Twin Adv Sports anniversary model. Going to the Spanish Pyrenees with it tomorrow morning 😎. Looking forward to your next video.
TMF great video as always when are the cost of ownership video's coming back
I stopped doing them when I lost Principle Insurance as a sponsor as they were able to easily give me insurance quotes.....strangely something bennetts when they sponsored me couldn't sort out....so they may come back if Principle do (or a n other insurance company)....
@@TheMissendenFlyer that a shame it was a good segment
Yes it is....
She looks and sounds like a great bike, but would have to be a Panigale V2 for me if I was in the market for a sportsbike. Cheers TMF
I’m a BMW person, but I dare say that the quality of the bike and finish may put it a point or two above the S1000RR….
I have to say the finish did feel very premium on this bike - had that certan specialness that it's hard to describe....
That’s a fascinating observation….
For me , I’m not so sure. I’ve just ordered a base model BMW S1000RR (£15K) I’m hoping it’s better in quality and feel than the Honda.
I can be convinced either way though !
Really fast and really powerfull bike
Triumph made a bike that you had to take the carbs of to get at the dip stick and the engine out for the tappets ---- it never went into production.
My new Speed Triple 1200 RS also only came with 2 little allen wrenches, lol.
In Australia your looking at £37 000 on road. While the Yamaha R1 is only £11 850. Btw the sp is the only model offered in Australia. You can also get the bmw moddel with all the extras for less.
Amazing bike, however I liked the looks of the previous gen better.
Fair enough!
Andy. You didn't have no fuel gauge on your negative list?
I would be constantly stressed out without one.
Lovely bike 👍
Yes should have been there!
@@TheMissendenFlyer you should have re watched the first half of this video before doing the lists you mentioned lots of negative things. Not sure who would buy this bike? A rich mans track day toy I guess?
Hey Andy, when are you getting your royal enfield back. Really interested to see what you've had done, I'm contemplating turning mine into a scrambler look!
I wish I knew! Progress is happenning, I hope in the next month....
The sound is melody...
It looks like winter has come early to Gert Misndn this year? Can you actually unscrew the brake reservoir cap with removing the fairing?
This was last winter....
Very very good review, do you know if the dash links up to your phone like most of the other superbikes?
I don't think it does but don't quote me on it!
@@TheMissendenFlyer cheers
Not really made for normal roads but of course you can use it every day. The question is: should you. The are much better bikes for normal use on normal roads or worse. In most cases cheaper, much more comfortable, much better weather protection, luggage capacity etc. And if your age comes near or over fifty, you want a bit more comfort etc.; your body asks for that.
All road bikes, cross over bikes, sport tourer bikes.
I'm fifty and have no intention of quitting riding a sports bike any time soon, still happily ripping around on my 2002 'Blade and I only start feeling sore after a couple of hundred miles.
One question I would have asked you was, How is the rather tall first gear on the road? On the launch vids, it hit 100mph in first on the track!
Yes the gearing is very tall, I rarely got beyond 3rd gear.....
It’s a lovely bike for what it’s built for. It’s a possible police magnet and licence loser too. Thanks for another great review Andy , very much appreciated.
My pleasure!
Nice review, will we ever see you on the ZX10R?
Kawasaki don't tend to work with UA-camrs (for some reason) so unless they change their minds, possibly not....
I have to be honest and say I have never understood why people wanted to ride race bikes around the street! Probably cos I ride too slow 😂
As far as a machine of excellence, yes lovely.
Would I ride one on the track? Hell yeah!!
Would I be fast on the track? Nah
You wouldn’t rock up at Tesco’s in a formula ford, although maybe an arial atom 🤔
Great bike (wasted on me) great video
Ian
Back on Two Wheels
Thabks for watching Ian!
The town you rode through @ 11:45 did it really have a BP garage opposite an ESSO? How odd is that?
Happens quite a ot here for some reason....
Great vid TMF! Randon question, do you or have you once owned a TVR Cerbera?
Nope - I have owned two TVRs in the past though (an "S" and a Chimaera)
@@TheMissendenFlyer Ah ok, just wondering as you have a photo of one on the inside of your garage door.
I'm on my way into the world of bikes and I'm finding your content a great source of information. Thank you!
No, that's my Chimaera....
please dont worry about mentioning the small details and the minus points = as this is probably the only way most of us will know about them,, i am too old and crap and you are not much better , but i would still like one of these = stunning colours and finish , 214 bhp , and you you can ride it on the road .. dont worry about all that track nonsense , very few people are any good on a track;;; most will take out occasionally on the highway and go === b h thats quick;;
What I'm so curious about is why does the UK Spec Fireblade SP have 214HP and the US Spec Fireblade have 186HP, any info on why thank you! :)
Hello Can you tell me what model I have mine is 2022 but don't have the gold forks or Brembo brakes
Not the SP then….
Honda's expensive halo race bikes have been good investments in the past but they've also got a heritage through race success. RC30, SP1&2 all command good prices these days. I'm not sure the Fireblade SP will fair as well. Maybe out of rarity. Damn fine machine but maybe missing the engineering design flair European manufacturers are putting out. I'm actually a bit sad Honda seem to be playing catchup these days instead of being a front runner even with their halo machine. The Goldwing is a bit of an exception as it's pretty unique in its segment.
I thought the Fireblade felt very special whilst I had it - I have ridden the other European sportbikes which are also brilliant, but the Honda is no lesser of a bike in my opinion....that said I'm only riding these as a back lane sunday rider not squeezing every last 1/10th of a second on track.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer I have no doubt the Fireblade SP is a special bike but it's following the pack and not leading which is where Honda should be. A RCV inspired halo bike would have followed on the heels of Honda's previous greats more closely imho.
Trackbike full stop!!!
,
Def a bike for the track, just be wasted on street riding only! Ride it on the road to the track!
I think the view over traffic would be considerably worse on a harley which is a cruiser and not designed for the track
Seems like it idles kind of high. I have a 96 fireblade and a 2012 anniversary fireblade and neither of them idle this high..interesting
No doubt a cracking bike (as are almost all modern bikes) but I do wonder if a bike like this would leave you crippled if you had to do a 150 mile stretch on it.....
Depends how fit you are I guess - I'd happily do a 150 mile run on it.....but I take your point, there are comfier bikes!
Change the sprocket to 15/44. It’s fast enough for the german autobahn (315 km/h in the 6. gear) and for country roads. My bike is very fast between 2000 and 6000 rpm, much faster as with the stock sprocket. It’s also perfect for touring with 15/44. Over 8000 rpm it is like riding a rocket.
I’am 62 years old but i will never change to another bike.
Greetings from Germany
Paul
If you see god, put on the brakes😇
What's the standard secondary gearing Paul?
Brake master cylinder awfully close to the fairing?
Lack the skills, courage and garage space for this monster!
FIREBLADE is fantastice
Nice review. A great bike but too much of everything imo & as you say wasted on me too.
