I have an art degree and was never taught about using an isolation coat! When I've mixed charcoal and acrylic I just used a Krylon spray finish. This was helpful. Also enjoyed the demo and seeing your beautiful painting evolve. : - ) Thank you for sharing!
I don’t think so. After the spray is applied in multiple light coats, the charcoal will smudge if you press hard and rub over it. The spray sets it enough to allow an isolation coat to be applied, with a brush and light pressure.. once the isolation coat drys, the charcoal is set.
Lu Creations it needs the isolation coat to protect the charcoal from smudging. The spray, once applied in multiple thin coats, sets the charcoal enough to allow the isolation coat to be painted across the surface with a light hand. If you only apply the spray the charcoal can be smudged if pressed firmly.
Alright! I been wanting to do a charcoal and acrylic paint mix for awhile and I wasn’t sure how to seal it then I came across your video Thank you for clarifying!!
Hi Mary, thank you for your question. I have never used Matt medium as an isolation coat. It is designed to be used to extend the open time when mixed with acrylic paint. I think it would be interesting to try it as an isolation coat to see if it works as well as the isolation coat. The finish of the Matt medium is Matt while the finish of the isolation coat is glossy. If you try the Matt medium, please let me know if it is successful. It seems that it could work.
Several layers of fixative need to be applied before adding the isolation coat. This will keep the charcoal from smearing or moving. I hope that helps. Thank you for your question!
Hi, thank you for your question. The Krylon Matt Finish Spray is a non glossy spray that protects the finished painting. It seals the charcoal by coating the surface . It permanently protects the surface and is designed to be used on charcoal, pencil and painted surfaces. I hope this helps! I have another video on sealing charcoal to a canvas that you may enjoy watching too. I discovered another product that also works well is sealing charcoal and protecting the surface. I added this video to my channel several weeks ago. It is called, How To Seal Charcoal Drawing To Your Canvas. You may find this helpful. Thank you and I hope you find the product that works best for you! 😊
Thank you for your question. I used a wooden panel that I purchased at my local art store. It was raw wood so I applied 3 coats of gesso to the board. Then I began the painting using acrylic and charcoal.

Nicely done...♥
Such a perfect and professional job😃
Thank you!!
I was wondering wondering if the krylon spray would hold the painting/charcoal with out the isolation coat?

What is the difference between the 'isolation coat' product you use and something like matte medium?

Once im done can i just put the isolation coat for the whole canvas? Or do i need to add a fixative to help seal more the charcoal

Hi I'm in Ireland , what is the krylon spray? What is it's function? So I can find something similar as we don't have that brand here 😊
