Unfortunately, I have embellished a giclee print for a client with oil paint before watching your oh so informative video! It has dried patchy and when viewed from the side looks awful. Is there anything I can do at this point to improve it? Would varnish help? If so, which varnish would you recommend? Thanks!
Oh I am sorry to hear that. I would recommend using a varnish. That would even out the surface sheen. I have made a video on a varnish that can be used on all surfaces including oil, canvas prints and acrylic paintings. In this video I talk about two varnishes, one applied as a spray and the other applied by brushing on. I would recommend either one. The video is called ‘One Varnish For All Of Your Paintings’. I hope this is the perfect solution and I wish you the best!
Just watched your "One Varnish for All." I'll give the Kamar a try! Thank you so much for answering.

@JANET FERRARO ART STUDIO Hello. I live in a building in a major US city. In the basement, we have a "Recycling Area", where tenants new and old will leave items down in the area: rugs, tables, paintings, plastic bins, clothing, sneakers, et cetera. And for all of you who just thought, "ICK!".... [ *Laughs triumphantly* ]... With some of the large works I have found -mainly abstract. Other tenants probably have no room for it or thought it was a "gicl'ee". Luckily, one of three 4'X5' paintings was inscribed and signed. So, I contacted the artist - who is luckily still living, and their art is thriving. Nearly 10K insurance on each piece. Good eye, huh? : ) Anyway. My question for you, Janet. So, I often will find large 6'X5' nylon gicl'ee canvases- already stretched -and one in a nice thin flat black frame! Another one, when you turn it to make it horizontal, you end-up with two vertical inner stretcher bar marks. So, I thought of making a tryptic with that gicl'ee. Of course, I know about priming a canvas or a panel. But do you think that simply spraying the image with a satin finish varnish would be good enough as a primer- for acrylics? Thanks so much!
Hi Lucifer, I have never actually worked with a nylon canvas. I usually work with cotton canvas, linen canvas or wooden panels. If you are wanting to paint over these canvases I would recommend experimenting with a gesso or possibly a clear gesso if you are wanting to preserve the artwork and enhance over it. I don’t know if a spray varnish is the best route since I am not sure how the nylon will react to this. Please let me know how it goes! Thank you and good luck !
@@janetferraroartstudio4234, Hi Janet, I did Google the question, with an answer of, "Yes". Oh, I need my coffee first. I'll come back to your reply a little later. Thanks. ZZzzz
The best Museum Glass Cleaning product that I have found is 'Ultra-Light Glass and Plastic Cleaner' . I found it at my local framing shop. You can also find it online.
Love it!
Thank you so much! 🥰
Thats awesome! Very well done
Thank you!!
Exquisite.. would have loved to see your process..
I will be adding videos soon that demonstrate this process. When I painted this I was so immersed in the process and didn’t film. Thank you for your ❤️!
Is there a trick to getting the isolation coat to spray evenly? And have you ever tried using gloss gel to seal charcoal? I’m in a cold climate so I can’t use a fixative or varnish indoors. Thank you for this video. You have beautiful work!
Hi and thank you for your question! I find that using the fine misting continuous spray bottle works well in dispersing the isolation coat evenly. Once it dries, touch it lightly in the darkest charcoal areas . If any transfers to your finger, spray again. You can just spray the spot that is not completely sealed too. I have used gloss gel medium to seal charcoal. I have another video demonstrating that process. It is titled; acrylic and charcoal, layering, how to seal the canvas. I prefer using the isolation coat. The reason for this is when sealing with gloss gel medium it requires an extra step. You need to use a spray fixative in several layers to set the charcoal before brushing on gloss gel medium. I have not used gloss gel medium in a spray bottle due to its thick consistency. The isolation coat product is much thinner and watery. I hope this helps! 🌸 best to you and your creation process! 😊
Thanks so much for your insight. I’ll have to try the isolation coat process for sure!!

This is so beautiful!! Is there any way I could buy a digital copy of it? I’m a self-published author and use charcoal drawings from artists to promote scenes from within my book. And this horse is exactly like my Adriaan. 🖤 Thank you so much, Christina
I’m so glad you like it! Perhaps we could chat more about your Adriaan and your book? My email is janet@janetferraro.com.
I used Gamvar satin varnish on 2 Alkyd paintings, an acrylic and an oil. It was okay with 2 coats on the oil. On the alkyds and acrylic it was a disaster. Shiny areas and dull matt areas and streaks. Will attempt to remove varnish with Gumsol from alkyds and acrylic paintings. Will never get Gamvar again. Could've done with knowing about the warming the stuff up beforehand to be honest.
Wow, I am sorry to hear that. I hope my video helps you in this process. Good luck and hang in there!

Thank you! Great video! But what about glare? I have a lot of windows and love them but am struggling with the constantly changing light, so I'm looking for studio lighting. What I see in your video is that the easel lamp appears to be creating glare. Maybe that's just the angle of the camera? So far everything I've tried has created a glare problem that makes it difficult to understand what I'm seeing on the canvas.
I do understand your question as I also have a studio with large windows too. What I have found with this lamp is it is easy for me to limit the glare on my painting by adjusting the arms on this lamp and the light intensity. With each arm having 4 levels of light , I can turn the light down on one or the other arm or on both. I also have one window where the sun , being lower on the horizon, directly shines in during the fall to winter months. I tape tracing paper over that window which creates filtered light and that really helps. I have had this lamp for a few years now and use it every time I paint at my easel. I am still really happy with it. I hope this helps! And yes, my filming has a learning curve…lol. Thank you for your question! 😊
@@janetferraroartstudio4234 Thank you for your helpful answer! I'm considering purchasing this lamp, and your information is useful to my thinking process. :) And the tracing paper for filtered light is a great idea.
@shawneefleenor2182 i am so glad you found this helpful! Adding the tracing paper to the window really does create wonderful filtered light. Thank you for asking and I wish you the very best! 💕

Can you only remove partial varnish and work on that area?
A very good question and yes you can with the Gamvar varnish.

Amazing. No glue involved? 😊
I know, it is amazing how easy it is and the acrylic gloss gel medium works perfectly, like a glue. Being a product meant for artwork, it is archival and won’t bleed through or yellow over time.. I am glad you enjoyed the video ! 😊
How long do you wait for your completed painting to dry before oiling out?
@@carolgivati7372 hi, I wait until it is no longer tacky and is dry to the touch. I hope this helps!

You're welcome! I am glad it helped! 😊
Tell me if you have a varnish that you like for your paintings.
Janet Ferraro Art Studio - How much Alkyd Medium do you use in each paint layer to comply with the fat over lean principle? Thanks for any help. I want to use it right away.
Hi, thank you for your question. Each layer should have slightly more oil than the previous layer. This increases the ‘fat’ of each layer. Add the oil that you prefer using , such as linseed oil. You can then keep the alkyd amount the same in each layer or decrease it. I hope this helps. Happy painting! ❤️
I need a gesso type that I can actually paint over in OIL. Will this work? Thanks
This can work, yes. Depending on your needs, another great alternative is using clear gesso by Liquitex. Actually a gesso that drys completely clear. I have used this gesso over acrylic and then oiled it out and painted with oil paint over it. It works very well. I hope this helps!
@@janetferraroartstudio4234 Thanks so much!
