I read “The R**e of Nanking” a few years ago and it’s definitely an emotional book. Its so descriptive that you feel like you are there during the invasion seeing it all happen and there’s nothing you can do. I’d highly recommend reading in chunks, read some, step away.
Real happy you’re enjoying The Road. That book, and Cormac in general, is why I picked up reading. No one writes like him, extremely poetic and whimsical in some sense. ❤
Tortilla Flat is a really fun short story by Steinbeck. Definitely a quick read and somewhat heartwarming but it’s really pretty funny too. Def recommend for you!
Taking part in 2 reads online. A slow 'wolf crawl' through the trilogy of Thomas Cromwell and along with that, Im reading Lord of the Rings for the first time and I have no idea who I am anymore, I am loving it.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. Super light and sweet - a sorbet amongst the heavy books on your list. I hope you like it!
Super vidéo merci. J'adore Steinbeck, j'ai lu les trois mentionnés et j'en suis marqué à jamais. Le procès et le château de Kafka sont a lire aussi. Bon vendredi.
It’s been a while since I read it but The Grapes of Wrath was my favourite book after I finished it. Damn, Steinbeck could really paint with his words.
"The very secret society of irregular witches",i loved it, a cozy and warm story!!! If you like books like "The house in the cerulian sea" this book is another treat. Have you read classics like "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte? Love your videos👌👍
You just seem so chill. I really enjoy listening to you talk about books with such passion, and I like that you have VHS movies and records and UGH! Honestly, and not to be wEiRd, but I'd hang out with you and your wife too! She's super cool!
I just read ‘day of the triffids’ by John Wyndham, I think you would like it as well and is not a long book at all. Could probably do it in a couple of toilet visits. Dystopian horror with plants and i think its a classic as well.
Hey I was wondering how The Book Club you mentioned works. Is there any kind of discussion about the book we read (The Road) together? Would love to get more info on that.
As for Steinbeck, I really liked "A Russian Journal". Might also be interesting for you from a Photographers perspective. Its non-fiction and basically a travel report from his journey together with Robert Capa to the young Soviet Union right after WWII (1947 or 1949 or something like that). Really liked it!
I've decided I'm getting back into Stormlight too - I've read the first three, now going to dive into Rhythm of War - which I'm hoping is Dalinar-centric as he's my favourite character. Love me some "Brandy Sandy' and I've heard the fifth installment is due out this year some time. I hope you enjoy Words if you read it, its awesome.
love the channel, a couple recommendations I think you'd like I haven't heard you mention are... One flew over the cuckoos nest, brave new world, running the light, communion, and battle Royale, if you happen to come across them in the wild. And I would bet that copy of 1984 you got jumps into your top ten all time. Cheers!
That's amazing. People should support this kind of content, it's very interesting and pushes people to read more, and stay away from wasting tile on social media platforms. Thank you.
The Stormlight Archive is my favorite series ever! You're in for a great time! I also read the R*pe of Nanking and the story is heart wrenching but I enraptured from the beginning. It contains a personal hero of mine in John Rabe. The dude is an absolute badass and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on him.
Saw you stephen king video 2 weeks ago. Dident know that to read after The stand (my first stephen king book) so started with the shining, Salems lot and just finisked Needfull things. Really good book if you havent read. Love you channel :)
Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. As a pulitzer prize winner, The Grapes of Wrath is very highly regarded and very good, but iI preferred East of Eden. My first Steinbeck book was Cannery Row and I loved it. That's the book that hooked me. I guess it was actually my 2nd Steinbeck. We read Of Mice and Men in school, also great. This is why he's one of my favorite authors!
I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed “Cujo.” Brace yourself for a masterpiece with Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road.” Absolutely exceptional book. (“No Country For Old Men” is incredible as well.) Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
Great book choices! You should read Grapes of Wrath first so that East of Eden becomes your Steinbeck favorite! Save the best for last 😂 Travels with Charley is another popular Steinbeck and is actually a nonfiction! It follows Steinbeck and his dog as they trek across America. It's a short read and really fun!
Thanks so much for sharing your list with us. Can’t wait to try some of them. I’m currently reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett and it is outstanding.
No Country for Old Men and the Boarder Trilogy are great. McCarthy is my all time favorite. I’m glad you’re enjoying him. I didn’t love Grapes of Wrath but I’m very tempted to give East of Eden a shot.
Words of Radiance is very good but the 3rd one, Oathbringer, took me so long to get through 😮💨 Was a real struggle. But its focus is on Dalinar and I am not a fan of him. I have yet to motivate me for Rhythm of War 😂 The other day my hubby was talking to a friend about Steinbeck and he recommended Grapes of Wrath 🤩
I have just started reading about a year ago, never tried before but loving it in general. Probably an unpopular opinion but I found The Great Gatsby to be a tad overrated. Just didnt hook me. A pretty short read I would recommend is The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Something really different but intriguing. Also for a laugh and an extremely light read go with Ayoade on Too - Richard Ayoade Currently working through the Three Body Problem series at the moment too, sci fi but again a really interesting concept. (I am yet to find my niche haha so trying everything)
An amazing history book that both my husband and I read was ,Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand! Anyway, in it they mention The Rape of Nan King and so I looked it up and regret doing it. There are images burned into my mind that I don't think will ever leave me. 😢😢😢
I think it is better to be safe then sorry. I hate that certain words are being censored though. Yes it is a horrible thing to happen to anybody but I also believe we should be talking about these things using the words so that we can learn and fight against the acts. Yes this is hypocritical, the fact that I am avoiding the word as well 😂
I saw The R**e of Nanking as a movie which lead me to the book. I’m not sure what the movie is called (if it is T.R.O.N.?), but it was about a fake priest who helped hide a school of girls from the enemy army. It was excellent! 💔
I’ve been going through Steinbecks oeuvre and am almost done (8 books to go). Favorite author by far, if you get through Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden and feel like checking more of his work out, I’d recommend To a God Unknown. Out of all the ones I’ve read, it hits so perfect.
Reading Nanking when I was in high school was just traumatic. I would highly recommend The Poppy War trilogy by RF Kuang who uses historical events like Nanking in a fantasy setting featuring a female antihero - there’s never enough of those - studying at a war college and then ends up going to war
If you like The Road, I’d go for ‘The Orchard Keeper’, ‘Child of God’, or ‘Outer Dark’ next. These works are next level up in density of writing I’d say
Really love your videos, any chance you could recommend Authors/Books that are easy reads for beginners? Finally started reading at 33 and feel like I’m playing catch up. Truly appreciate your content
Also, I just started following your page, but if you like McCarthy, and haven’t yet checked out Faulkner, you should! I LOVE the southern gothic genre.
I enjoyed We have always lived in the castle more than Haunting of Hill house on first read, but after re-reading Hill House I agree it's the better book, but maybe not as initially impactful.
Cormac Mccarthy was great. I read no country, The road and blood meridian back to back. 1st two were fantastic but didn't really connect with blood meridian. Some great passages but was more the western content that's not my bag!
Hey if you are liking Steinbeck PLEASE don't pass up THE MOON IS DOWN. It's a "WWII Parable" and will take you like, an hour to read. But Grapes of Wrath is also amazing.
I am really grateful that you have a UA-cam channel. I'm trying to be more productive by spending less time on social media, but sometimes when I'm bored, I just want to watch your vlogs about books. I tried searching for Cj known as @Cjtalksbooks on UA-cam, but he doesn't seem to have a channel yet. I hope he creates one soon.😅❤❤
Favorite UA-camr right now!
thank you!
Discovered your channel around a month ago, and I love how chill your videos are. Your range in reading is great as well. Have a great day!
No Country for Old Men is fantastic! Same with The Road. Love Cormac McCarthy’s writing.
The road was incredible
Love Cormac, No Country was the first one I had read from him years ago - couldn't get into the Road tho.
I read “The R**e of Nanking” a few years ago and it’s definitely an emotional book. Its so descriptive that you feel like you are there during the invasion seeing it all happen and there’s nothing you can do. I’d highly recommend reading in chunks, read some, step away.
Currently reading Lonesome Dove and loving it. Gives me similar vibes to East of Eden by Steinbeck. Must Read!
If you liked Of Mice and Men , I think you would really like Cannery Row ... For different reasons,. I do love Steinbeck
LOVE how many classics you read. :)
Taking part in 2 reads online. A slow 'wolf crawl' through the trilogy of Thomas Cromwell and along with that, Im reading Lord of the Rings for the first time and I have no idea who I am anymore, I am loving it.
Never seen someone enjoy talking about books as much as you do mate. Keep up the great work.
I couldn't have said it better! His enthusiasm is contagious! Makes me want to stop everything and read.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. Super light and sweet - a sorbet amongst the heavy books on your list. I hope you like it!
Best youtuber right now
Super vidéo merci.
J'adore Steinbeck, j'ai lu les trois mentionnés et j'en suis marqué à jamais.
Le procès et le château de Kafka sont a lire aussi.
Bon vendredi.
Appreciate your videos man. Your channel is kinda like the cozy book for me haha. Keep on man!
The road is incredible. I also tore it up the first couple days of April. Can’t believe I waited this long to read it.
It’s been a while since I read it but The Grapes of Wrath was my favourite book after I finished it. Damn, Steinbeck could really paint with his words.
I love your videos . There's just something so comforting and cozy about them :)))))
"The very secret society of irregular witches",i loved it, a cozy and warm story!!! If you like books like "The house in the cerulian sea" this book is another treat. Have you read classics like "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte? Love your videos👌👍

Hey I was wondering how The Book Club you mentioned works. Is there any kind of discussion about the book we read (The Road) together? Would love to get more info on that.
Oh, dude. The Road. Strap yourself in!
I love your videos so much. Something about your vibe and your content in general, is so chill to me. So grateful to have found your channel!
As for Steinbeck, I really liked "A Russian Journal". Might also be interesting for you from a Photographers perspective. People either love or hate The Secret History. No gray area. I really enjoyed it. Can't wait to see what you think.
your taste in books is SO on par with mine - your channel is amazing i love your videos!!!
My favorite Steinbeck is Travels with Charley. It's about a road trip he took with his poodle Charley around the USA in the 60's. So good!
I'm so excited to read along!! Thank you for doing you
I've decided I'm getting back into Stormlight too - I've read the first three, now going to dive into Rhythm of War - which I'm hoping is Dalinar-centric as he's my favourite character. Oh, man, Claire Keegan is AMAZING. I'm really loving your enthusiasm about reading--refreshing!
Totally sold by your reaction to Of Mice and Men 😂
Nice list, currently I’m reading The grapes of wrath, love it . Then may I have Cannery Row on the list chers
I have about 40 pages left of The Secret History and it's soooo good man!
I’m glad you liked Annihilation. Vandermeer is a genius imo.
Best energy out there. You’re the best!!
Saw you stephen king video 2 weeks ago. Dident know that to read after The stand (my first stephen king book) so started with the shining, Salems lot and just finisked Needfull things. Really good book if you havent read. Love you channel :)
I feel like you would like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, I recommend listening to the audio book, it is a wild ride man
Read blood meridian slowly and out loud. I think it’s the greatest book ever written. Judge Holden is the best character in all of literature
For fun, try Travela with Charley by Steinbeck. It’s great!
There’s a lot of food for thought with Travels with Charley by Steinbeck
Steinbeck is an amazing writer, you should read East of Eden next if you haven’t yet
Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. As a pulitzer prize winner, The Grapes of Wrath is very highly regarded and very good, but iI preferred East of Eden. If you want a less heavy Steinbeck, I big recommend Cannery Row. It's hilarious. I think you'd like it.
Thanks so much for sharing your list with us. Can’t wait to try some of them. I’m currently reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett and it is outstanding.

Words of Radiance is definitely awesome. I got finished reading it in February and it’s fantastic. So much is improved upon from TWOK.
I have just started reading about a year ago, never tried before but loving it in general. Probably an unpopular opinion but I found The Great Gatsby to be a tad overrated. Just didnt hook me.

You'll have to join us in Old School April from @slimeandslashers It's a great nostalgic time. If not this year, next.
I highly recommend Cannery Row for your next Steinbeck instead of East of Eden.
❤ the things they carried

East of Eden I read in January and I still am living it. Masterpiece
I’m glad you enjoyed Of Mice and Men. East of Eden by Steinbeck is my favorite book of all time so I hope you make it to that eventually:)
I started reading the Bible books are amazing
Reading Nanking when I was in high school was just traumatic. I would highly recommend The Poppy War trilogy by RF Kuang who uses historical events like Nanking in a fantasy setting featuring a female antihero - there’s never enough of those - studying at a war college and then ends up going to war

Love your channel !
whenever i saw your video in my feed i will be like "Lets Go"
Wait until you get to East of Eden it’s unbelievable
Michael Kist is awesome!
Definitely recommend All The Pretty Horses
Really love your videos, any chance you could recommend Authors/Books that are easy reads for beginners? Finally started reading at 33 and feel like I’m playing catch up. Truly appreciate your content
hi i love your channel can you please tell me what desk chair that is that you're sitting on and if you recommend it
I’ve read part of the super secret society, I should get back to it. It’s good, I’m just fighting my adhd
I hope you love The Road. I was unsuspecting when I picked it up and it was so good. Child of God by Cormac McCarthy is disturbing and very good, too.
Also, I just started following your page, but if you like McCarthy, and haven’t yet checked out Faulkner, you should! I LOVE the southern gothic genre.
Of mice and men I loved the book and the movie so amazing
I enjoyed We have always lived in the castle more than Haunting of Hill house on first read, but after re-reading Hill House I agree it's the better book, but maybe not as initially impactful.
I loved the road I read it all in one night.
You need some Neil Gaiman! Start with The Graveyard Book!
Steinbeck is the GOAT... that is all.
That secret history trade paperback has some of the best flop I’ve ever felt
Cormac Mccarthy was great. I read no country, The road and blood meridian back to back. 1st two were fantastic but didn't really connect with blood meridian. Some great passages but was more the western content that's not my bag!
John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley.
Any chance of going into the premise of the book a little bit more that you’ve read? Just a suggestion 😊
You gotta read The Secret History!!!
Thanks for all of your videos. Do you read multiple books at once?
How many hours do you read a day? You get through a lot of material!
PS: I deleted my Instagram and Tiktok Apps that's why I searched for them on Yt instead
Hi how does the book club work? Do you all discuss the book on your patreon? I’ve never been a part of something like that.
"Irish Chang"
What is the name of the history book club you briefly mentioned? I couldn’t find it in a search. Can you post a link?
Do you read multiple books at the same time? I have never tried it but have been thinking about doing it recently.
nice picks!
What's a great start for Stephen King?
Reach out to Blood Meridian. You got a devil sitting on your shelf 😈
Read Child of God by McCarthy. It is so good!!
I'm still traumatized by The Road.
Sick
Enjoyed Of Mice & Men. Hated the end.
