He is still doing it at nearly 80 yrs old. I believe he late 60’s to 70 here and DANG not many young “country” singers can hold a candle to him

Great reaction, yes, that's a REAL country song. Listen to it again, in the song his dad blamed him for the death of his wife (singer's mom). Gene does a great job with this song but I first heard it by Marty Robbins, listen to his version also, and please react to something by Marty if you don't know his music, also you could react to Johnny Horton "North to Alaska", "Battle of New Orleans", "Sink the Bismark", or "Whispering Pines". Thanks again.

The song was writing by Marty Robbins who has a great version of the song. You should check out " when a man can't get a women off his mind" by Gene Watson, great song.

Written by Marty back in the 60's. He recorded along with others like Frankie Liane, Johnny Bush, Elvis and many others. You should check out some of Johnny Bush's music what a powerful voice before he had voice issues for may years. He had to relearn how to sing again. Gene is a power house, him and Johnny Bush rocked Texas.

I heard Marty Robbins and Frankie lane and Elvis sing this song also. But this is the best version ..He has and always had the best voice in country music .Some have credited George Jones or Vern Gosdin with the best vocals .infact.vern was dubbed the voice. .But Memories to burn .is awesome . And your sitting on a gold mine. Is top shelf music .most of his songs have a double meaning. .This is part of his trademark. And I love take off them shoes you ain't walking out the door. .And everybody needs a hero .and winos prayer .and one song has the best line of any song - it is sitting at a red light waiting for my life to change. The song is I catch myself ..But some songs are so funny but you dont catch it because his voice is so great .it takes I mins to sink in. He once said oh I'm just an auto body guy who likes to sing a song now and then. He and his brother own a very good auto body shop in Houston .I bet he don't fix cars anymore .But as great as he is he only had one # one hit .and it was 14 carat mind .. and 10 songs that were in the top 10 .

Marty Robbins wrote "You Gave Me a Mountain." (I don't like Elvis - but he recorded it as well.) This song was on the Gene Watson's 4th LP titled "Paper Rosie," his only hit for that album, released in 1977.

@Gary Guinn So cool that you got to meet him. I remember that I had many chances to see the Grateful Dead, for instance, but I never went. And now I regret it. That's partly what gets me off my couch and out to the concerts, is that weeks later I'll wish I'd made the effort. And seeing Gene is a moment you'll remember.

As others have already commented, this song was written by Marty Robbins. It's partially-autobiographical. For example, Marty Robbins mother did NOT die giving him birth, however it's my understanding his father was difficult. Robbins wife stayed with him all his life, however they did have problems. I'd advise listening to Robbins' version, but take it only semi-seriously.

I was happy to see the song evoked emotions from your own life and the lives of your friends. In my email to you, I stated that you could feel the pain. I was correct in that statement. You are the best and Bless your Heart. Linda p.s. I also gave Elvis credit for his version which is also great.

Oh I love this song!!! It is so heartbreaking and so many can relate. This is how I felt after my husband died, then again when my 30 yr old daughter who had never done drugs lost her mind and took meth n got hooked, arrested and lost her babies. Elvis covered this.
Gives me the chills every time I hear it.

Not an old-school Opry fan...never saw the stage set up this way before: throwing the singer in the middle of a bunch of legends and stars. Looks like a Roman gladiator setup! I was waiting for Roy Clark to either give him the thumbs up or down.
No problem for Watson because he clearly gets the the thumbs up. (Ya - no questions.) But, man, you better bring it if you step on this stage! I wonder how many legends shat the bed in that moment...

This is actually from the RFD tv network. Bill Anderson hosts the show and there is always a group of stars as you see here, sitting and reflecting on the music and times they have endured as professionals in the country music industry, especially in times when it was not a very lucrative business and their talents unappreciated. The name of the show is Country’s Family Reunion. If you like traditional country music, you might want to check it out or google it to get a better description of the show.
