There would be no country music without the people in that room. Porter Wagoner and all the rest are the very root of country. I wish the video was more clear so I could make out other faces. Larry Gatlin and Roy Clark are in there also.

Gene Watson closes all his shows with this song. It was written by Lawton Williams who also wrote the great song "Fraulein". Even today, this song is Gene Watson's most requested song. Lawton Williams gave his BMI award for this song to Gene Watson. Several artists recorded this song before Gene but none had a hit with it, Little Jimmy Dickens and Waylon Jennings to name two. The only woman to record it (the last time I checked) was Jean Shepard. I've often said I think I've danced a thousand miles to this song. One of those great "hugging on the dance floor" songs!

Thank you! Nobody seems to remember GW's contribution to country music. My mama married his big brother, Jack, when she was 15 and had 4 little Watson's who are all very musically gifted just as Jack was. He could play anything with strings and was a popular session player until he got caught with the wrong man's wife. Then he got black balled. Mom was offered a recording contract but he was pissy over being banned from being involved so he made her turn it down. This was all in the Bakersfield scene in the 50s. My mom had some stories!

Farewell Party is my oldest brother's favorite song. Not his favorite song by Gene Watson, his favorite song-period.
I think I can identify some of these people for you. Some of the long shots are so blurry that I cannot see them well enough to know who they are but here goes.
2:51 Porter Wagoner, Janie Fricke, Larry Gatlin, and Ralph Emery.
    Porter Wagoner (in sequined suit),
Janie Fricke (who sang background for MANY country singers),
Larry Gatlin (in camel colored jacket. Larry and his brothers Rudy and Steve performed together as the Gatlin Brothers and in the 1970's they were about the hottest thing around. Broken Lady, I've Done Enough Dying Today and All the Gold In California were their biggest hits).
FInally, Ralph Emery. Ralph was not a singer, though he did release one song, Hello Fool which was an answer to Faron Young's, Hello Walls. Hello Walls was a man talking to his house and Hello Fool was the house talking back to him. This got about as much attention as you would expect. Because it was a novelty record everyone pretty much wanted to hear it ONE TIME but no one lined up to hear it a second time. I doubt that Ralph cared that his song was not a huge hit because he actually was a DJ. In fact, he was an iconic country DJ on WSM Radio 650. WSM was billed as "clear channel 650" because at night everyone in the southeastern part of the US could hear WSM so Ralph had a huge following.
I believe Ralph had the Midnight to 6 show at WSM (my memory is a bit fuzzy on the exact time of his show) and back in those days security was extremely lax and the station was not usually locked. My brother and I went up there a time or two and he actually let us in the control room with him and we got to watch (very quietly) as he interviewed stars of the Grand Ole Opry. When country singers would come home after being on the road on tour, their first stop was at WSM to talk to Ralph, often before they even went home. He would find out where they were going next on tour and if they had a new record he would play it. He talked to so many singers and they told him so many stories that he pretty much became a walking encyclopedia for all things country music.
He married Skeeter Davis, herself a country singer. Skeeter started out singing with another young woman whose name was Betty Jack Davis and they went by the name The Davis Sisters though Skeeter's last name was NOT Davis and they were NOT sisters. They had a monster hit "I Forgot More Than You'll Ever Know About Him" and while they were on tour promoting that record another driver I believe fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into them and Betty Jack was killed. After that Skeeter briefly paired with another female singer but the chemistry just was not there and she soon launched a solo career. I believe her first BIG hit as a solo artist was "The End of the World". Ralph and Skeeter divorced after only four years of marriage.
3:37 Charlie Rich a/k/a The Silver Fox because of his beautiful silver white hair. He released "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" and "Behind Closed Doors".
6:50 Lorrie Morgan, the daughter of George Morgan. George was a star on the Grand Ole Opry and his big hits were "Candy Kisses" and "Room Full of Roses". Lorrie also became a member of the Opry and she had a big hit with "Something in Red" and she also covered a George Jones song, "A Picture of Me Without You". I am a huge George Jones fan (after watching the movie, Misery I don't dare say I'm someone's Number One Fan) but I honestly think Lorrie's cover of this song is about as good as George's original of it.
7:06 Barbara Fairchild I don't know that Barbara is what is cruelly known as a "One Hit Wonder" but honestly the only hit of hers (that I can remember is "Teddy Bear".
7:33 I believe that's George Lindsey who was on Hee Haw and also played Goober on the Andy Griffith Show and the Griffith Show's spinoff, Gomer Pyle.
Ricky Van Shelton (in the cowboy hat). Ricky recorded "Statue of a Fool" and "I'll Leave this World Loving You". He also covered "Life Turned Her that Way" that was originally recorded in 1955 by Little Jimmy Dickens and later recorded by Charlie Pride, George Jones and the version that made the biggest hit in 1967 by Mel Tillis.
7:56 Waylon Jennings: "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys" and "I Don't Believe Hank Done it This Way".
8:12 Bobby Bare (standing) His hits include "Margie's at the Lincoln Park Inn", "Detroit City", "Shame on Me" and "Miller's Cave". Then Waylon, then Roy Clark and finally Crystal Gayle and behind Crystal Gayle is T. Graham Brown. It's too blurry for me to see who the other two people are.
Whew! I'm through. Sorry this got so long but I just wanted to let you know who some of these people are. And you're right. They are HUGE and most of them are in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
To paraphrase Minnie Pearl, "I'm through writing now."

Of course, the blonde was Lorie Morgan, a fabulous singer in her own right. Larry Gatlin was sitting right in front of Gene. The stage was full of country legends. Notice when Waylon Jennings looks over at him when the iconic finally was sang , and every other great vocalist was also watching intently, for that great ending. He got a standing ovation from everyone in that crowd of country legends. Why Gene isnt in the country hall of fame just brings shame to the hall of fame. To wait and award it after he passes would be the greatest injustice, and take all legitamacy away from the hall of fame!!! Thank you for all the great reviews of singers, known and barely known.

I just happen to get this in my feed, I've been a fan of Gene Watson for a few years ever since I seen him on Country Family Reunion. This song "Farewell Party" was released by Gene in 1979, was originally recorded in 1960 by Lawton Williams who wrote it, and covered a year later by Little Jimmy Dickens. What I imagined in hearing this song is that it was a prequel to "He stopped Loving Her Today". It wasn't of course the the two stories do fit well together although the songs were written years apart by different people.

Another great one from a fellow Texan. Gene was constantly on Houston radio, grew-up listening to Gene. A great Country artist. The original recording is much better. His voice is haunting. I could name everyone there but I loved seeing Waylon up front in the light blue shirt.

I wandered if I was crazy for thinking of how ppl (my children) will remember me when I'm gone? I'm pretty sure this is a current relationship that's somewhere gone sour but still holding it togther and he wants to keep her til his last breath of life is gone from his body.

I never thought the speaker had done anything in particular that left a terrible legacy. I think it’s about losing the love of someone he cared about very much and he’s asking for this one last concession. At my funeral please at least pretend that you still love me and will miss me.

The video is from a Gaither style video featuring country legends. I actually have the cd. Another performance from it that is great is Kris Kristopherson telling the inspiration behind Why Me then Singing it with Willie Nelson singing backup.
