"Is it living, or just existence?"
The Enemy Within, Part 1 of the "Fear Trilogy" off of the Grace Under Pressure album. In celebration of my 50th RUSH cover I threw in something of my own (something I normally don't do) near the end of the song for anyone who might stick around long enough to hear it.
I want you to know that I have a 9 month old right now, and he sits in my lap and watches music videos, and this is absolutely his favorite video. No matter how upset he is, if I put this on, he's immediately up bouncing and laughing. He actually loves all you're stuff, you're his favorite dude. So, stick around about 20 years, you may have some guy named Roland (yes, named after the gunslinger from The Dark Tower) bugging you like I do. It'll be a family tradition.
Glad to be of service! Thanks for the great comment, Bobby!
Dark Tower and Rush fan, my kinda guy
That run at the end was fantastic!
Thanks.
I had to stop EVERYTHING I was doing and pick up my bass after hearing the end of this! Amazing job!
Yup, I had to stop and rewind several times. That was slick
Geddy lee fuckin' rocks! I would have to say that Rush collectively are 3 of the best musicians on the planet !
Totally agree sssbob ! How do you feel about my 2nd Fav R & R 3 Piece Band from the Great White North, Triumph ?
That is the best bass cover I have heard period. You play relaxed which is something that must be almost impossible to do on this song. I have seen Geddy do this live too and he is relaxed when he plays, the others I have seen here have struggled to keep up and the timing isn't exact. You have done a fantastic job here and this is coming from someone very critical of people covering the best and my favorite bass player. Take that as a BIG compliment.
awesome job sir love the rickenbacker but i call them backenbraker there so darn heavy lol
Thanks. I never had a problem with their synth era stuff. My favorite 2 albums are Power Windows and Hold Your Fire and was very happy when they resurrected the PW's stuff for this current tour.
This video still stands as my favorite cover on your entire channel. So dang awesome, and your run at the end is nuts. The day I finally was able to play this was a happy one; your video helped out a lot.
Thanks a lot. I remember this one being a bit tougher than it might seem. I'm glad you got it.
Soooo refreshing to hear the intro section played correctly!! Yes, the high octave notes are on the upbeat, not the downbeat! This changes the downbeat once the vocals begin.
Thanks for picking up on that Ricky!
One of Geddys best bass lines! Nice improv at the end bro!
One of many. Thanks a lot!
Brilliant Troy!!!!!! Thanks...Marvine :-)
Thank you Marvine.
Congratulations, one of the most original bass lines. Thanks
Ponponpon pounding in the temple......Experience to extremes.... Dude you’re good!
Thanks. You're too kind.
4:09 wicked good chops thrown in!
Jim Merk Thanks.
Que bella epoca..cuando descubri a RUSH.
@gerrymcinnis
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I always had a bit of difficulty playing with the 'galloping' feel, but it didn't come out too bad.
I always thought it strange that he was shown playing the Rickenbacker on the videos fro this song and The Body Electric.
Thanks again for viewing and commenting.
@SteveCOnTheTube
Thanks a lot. My first "good" bass was a Ric (Fireglow) as well. I was a little disappointed when I got it home and didn't sound just like Chris Squire though. I was in 9th grade and paid $425 brand new - for me it was a fortune back then.
Cheers to this dude for absolutely shredding this song with those small ass mitts. Top score.
Thanks! You are the first person to ever comment on the size of my hands and I tell people all the time that my hands are smallish. I think you for noticing.
The part were you added some of you in was AMAZING! Geddy would be proud!
Thanks.
@Nivtop2112 Thanks. This wasn't in my regular rotation of songs I would practice to. It tended to get sloppy with all the octaves and such but I think it cleaned up pretty good. Thanks again.
By far the best Rush covers on youtube...It amazes me how well you recreate the original bassline without being a slave to it. A joy to listen to!
That run at 4:08 was amazing. Really clean!
Thanks.
Thanks a lot. I try and pay as much attention to the small details as I can.
One of my all-time Rush favorites! Not only your playing is awesome, but you have a great taste for those extra special bass lines. thanks for your great work.
This song, and Marathon are always on my treadmill play
list.
Awesome!
Y'know, I guess I somehow gleamed over the Grace Under Pressure era.There are just some phases of Rush I was never truly interested in, but I'm finally diving into this one, and of course you have the best bass cover of the best song I've run across tonight. Dude, what an intense song! I don't even know if I want to attempt it, but my man TJ comes through yet again. That fill-in at 4:07 is what I live for, and why I watch people like you play, because I see that and say, "I 'have to be able to play that, now!". I hope you feel bad for the ass-whippin you send that bass to bed with every night.
Yeah, Rush has such a varied catalog of music and some albums are just more appealing than others to people. Everyone is entitled to have their favorites... or their least favorite. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, Bobby. Take care!
@@TJH3113 It's so many little things, too. Like in this song when Geddy delivers that higher, louder "YEA, YOU!....". It's that kind of culmination of lyrics, concepts, vocals and instrumentation that sends that shiver from your spine to your arm hairs and your toes. I love it, man. I think that's why I'm so obsessed with Rush. They know how to deliver goosebumps and brain needles so well.
Another phenomenal cover. I really enjoy watching you play...mostly because of the attention you pay to the small variations of the main riff. Simply incredible!
One of my favorites from my favorite album. Superb effort and results! Thank you!
Thank you very much.
@gerrymcinnis
Your right, this was the only album recorded with the Steinberger. He toured with it for part of the Signals tour (I believe) through the Power Windows tour. He recorded Power Windows through Roll The Bones with the Wal then switched to the black Jazz for touring and recording from Counterparts forward. I have a really interesting video in my "favorites" where he speaks about his basses and sounds over the years - check it out. I'm not a big fan of the Jazz bass sound myself.
Incredible cover. So fun to listen to.
Thank you very much.
This one is a benchmark goal of mine to learn. Probably the bass line that got me interested in cool bass lines. What a doozy! Masterfully done.
@jicommon
Thank you very much. That was very kind of you to say.
another example of perfection of our friend TJH3113, congratulations
Thank you, this is one of my favorite Rush song!! I'd love to play like you but i'll keep on working hard. Maybe one day :) Love your little impro at the end of the song...
Holy shit... that was a kick ass cover... simple yet elegant arrangements!
Thanks.
@mscam48 That's very nice of you to say. Thank you.
Exellent !! Very Good !! Geddy Lee !!
Geddy Lee: "I'ma do this and sing at the same time".
Me: No effing way.
Geddy: "Actually I'ma do this and sing AND play keyboards all at the same time".
Me: Ok now that's just insanity.
😂
Awesome!!! Congratulations!!
Awesome! Love the use of open notes to give the bass line a "swing" feel!
Thanks.
That Rick tone is way better than the “dead rubber band” bass sound from that era (Steinbergers and Wals).
I’d love to hear all of the GUP, PW, and HYF songs redone with the Signals bass set up which, to my ears, stands as the best prog bass tone ever recorded.
Well done. Flawless technique, very musical. Bravo!
Thanks.
Not many people can improvise over a Rush tune, but right at the end there definitely made this video.
Powerfull Musicianship!
@vectron12 I was feeling inspired. Thank you.
ohhhh that thing at the end was what you added
it was crazy
@Shockwave017
I'd never be so arrogant as to think I could improve on one of Geddy's bass lines in any way, but, in celebration of my 50th RUSH cover I thought I'd "go off" a little.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
back for another listen. always loved the base riffs in this song, back before the awesome subwoofers of today, lol. OK, next step: sing along (lol).. isn't it so impressive that geddy sang along to this intricate riffs? Blows my mind.
Enjoy! Yeah, I think this would be an especially difficult one to sing and play. Amazing, isn't it?
@@TJH3113 enjoy several of your vids! can't believe this one is 10 yrs old! lol.
@@TJH3113 Do you miss prog rock as much as I do? it's a shame rock appears to be withering on the vine.
great cover of a great song! Thank you
@wnils That's good to hear. Have you seen clips from their first couple shows? Looks pretty good. September will come quick I'm sure.
Always perfect, always enjoy ur covers! Everytime i have a rush song in my head, i come to youtube to listen to it and then watch ur bass cover of it loll keep up the good work my man
+mike dee Thanks.
This is not a an easy song to play cleanly and accurately. I was a teenager when it came out, and I remember
resorting to breathing exercises, so I wouldn't tense up playing this song. You make it look way easier than it is.
Great playing as always, and keep up the great work.
Thank you so much Keith.
@vectron12 Agreed. Absolutely nuts. I have a live bootleg of 2112 from the 70's and as they go into the grand finale of it, Geddy does a riff that is similar to what you did hear. Its so cool
Amazing, you did in fact improve on one of Geddy's basslines. Seriously, that bit you threw in was great. In fact every time I've listened to the song since, I sort of play your addition in my head at that part. It could, and should, have been in the song!
Nicely done!!!
Thanks!
amazing cover man, your a beast.
Absolutely, Absalomly Fantastic !! Insert * wink * here. Thank you for sharing this one. I really enjoyed hearing this song done with the Ric too. The riff or solo beginning at 4:09 is ridiculously great.
Haha...I got it. Thank you very much, I appreciate the kind words.
dude love all your geddy. I think that your improve at the end is some of the coolest stuff if seen from you.
Looks like you love RUSH as much as I do! Keep posting.
Damn, I Tabbed out, and forgot this was a COVER. Great job, love your work.
Perfeito! I'm trying to play this music in my band , this video will help me play this song perfectly. Greetings from Manaus - Brazil! You are the bass,,, I mean, the best!
Alexandre Negreiros Cool. Enjoy. Thank you.
Great job!
This song is so funny to play! So groovy!
Nice addiction at the end!
@woogie88888
Thanks a lot. On a lot of his material it's important to strike a balance between how aggressively you play and how much you need to pull back or "relax". You need to play hard enough to try and get the feel and sound but If you "dig in" too much you risk choking and losing dexterity.
God, can you imagine singing while doing that?
3 Brains at least....
@cultfan187 Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Legendary
Thanks.
@fboriani
I agree, it is a tough one. Thank you.
Thank you.
@JCM1325
Thank you very much.
Brilliant
Thank you
@Nixx616
Thanks. I see you're into both RUSH and horror as well. Good for us!
If we're talking about the same part, I believe it's guitar. Check out a live version. And Geddy never slaps.
Very nice touch at 4:09 (yes, i listened to the whole song)
Thanks a lot.
Yes.
Really great
You damn good, bassist..!!!
Thank you!
@coosomo
I'm going to print your comment out, frame it and hang it on my wall. Thank you for the incredible compliment but I'm just a simple RUSH fan like yourself.
realy nice job. congratz
Thanks.
awesome man....
+Manoel Ferraz Thanks.
I had a feeling you'd smash this one =D. Phenomenal playing!
Chi, Chi, Chi ... Haa, Haa, Haa -- good stuff, Tommy

Carlos Medina Thanks. Here, have a tissue.

@wnils Thanks. How's work doing? And when is your concert? Ours is coming up on the 23rd.
@adnoHis1 Thank you kindly.
awesome
Thank you.
Cool.
@duilkin Jeez, thank you.
That sauce at the end was tasty af
Thanks!
I hate you. In a good way. But I hate you. Curse you and your great playing. Teach me your ways. Loving your tone and clarity and skill. Geddy makes it sound so simple, but watching you play makes me realise just how complicated it is. How on earth anybody has the memory to remember all those notes!
@readinguni99
Thank you very much.
Awesome Troy, I was looking through your Rush covers and noticed you've not done secret touch. I've been trying at that one for a bit but the guitar intro on bass it hard to do. You should check it out when the time comes, its an awesome song and the bass for its incredible. Good job on this one, its one of my personal favorites. Also awesome job on Stick it out. Really loved that one too. Your covers inspire me to be better. Want to see what other awesome covers you have up your sleeves.
