"Summer's going fast, nights growing colder, children growing up, old friends growing older."
This just might be my all time favorite RUSH song. Beautiful song, great melody, touching lyrics. Please forgive the opening note clunker, I forgot I was on a 5 string. The riff at 2:44 is one of my favorites.
In the majority of music, the bass plays a much more subordinate role than what Geddy Lee usually comes up with. His bass lines are generally busier, more melodic and up front in the mix. Those are a few of the reasons he is my favorite bassist.
Thanks.
@@malcolmlarri8236 they played busy at the same time a lot
11 years later and your covers are still the best.
Thanks so much Roee!
@@TJH3113 :) btw my old username was 'coosomo', you recorded a 'By Tor' cover upon my request many years ago! Still an award cover
I couldn’t agree more. Time Stands Still is absolutely my favorite Rush song.
you play with such precision and talent... keep up these amazing RUSH covers... greatest band in the world by the way.
Nice song..the best of Rush
It is, isn't it? It's all the best.💔
the opening note "clunker" turns out to have worked quite nicely!
I have incorporated it into the song when I play it on bass. it's an excellent opening position!
I have 2 additions to that cleverly executed mistake. 😇
My favorite guitar part is at the bridge where Alex literally sounds like crystalline sugar
God, what an awesome cover! I could listen to that riff at 2:44 all day long. One of Geddy's best if you ask me.
I think that riff at 2:44 was the reason I started playing bass guitar.
Not that I can play it now, though - even after 20 years... Good work!
When someone tells me that playing the bass is to stand in the back dark side of the stage doing bum bum bum, I show him 2:44 and feel great! Very good job Mr TJH3113 !!!
"stand(ing) in the back dark side of the stage" would be my dream job. Thanks!
I forgot how good this song is. Masterful bass line and a very good cover here. To me this song has always said to 80's soft rock: "Here's how it's done. Here's how to make it exciting."
I love the humility in your post above (about mimic.) Your lessons are great! This is one of my favorite songs by any artist. And this album is just about my favorite Rush album. The whole thing is full of beautiful melodies and countermelodies.
excellent...fantastic playing, I too love that riff and a couple others in this song...and of course that last verse lyrics.."Summer's going fast, nights growing colder, children growing up, old friends growing older."...sums it all up...love it.!
Thank you.
@MrDaddyjay69
Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it. This song is one of my favorites as well.
My all-time favorite Rush song! You really are an amazing artist!
Nice playing. "Time Stand Still" is probably my favorite Rush track as well. Perfect song. Thanks for all of your videos. I have picked up a few things I might otherwise have missed in playing them.
Thanks, guy. Brings it closer to human. Love this song,
Thanks... me too.
this is definitely one of my favorite Rush songs.. VERY underrated!
Great job, beautiful bass line, viva rush!
Thanks a lot!
@JethroRush
Thanks. This is probably my favorite song by RUSH. This was my first take of which I thought were going to be many. That's why I just played through the opening note clunker. When I made it through that riff you mentioned I was pretty sure I wouldn't be able to improve on it, so I went with this take. It is a great riff and really tough to play. Thanks again.
Probably my favorite Rush song as well. Amazing playing, Troy.
Thanks.
Thanks for giving me the faith to learn this one. Without you I didn't reach the end ! ;-)) Great job as usual.
Geddy is on fire on this one ....and you nailed it!
No doubt… Thanks Barry!
Nice to watch the whole bass line having watched the video with you singing. The bass is a wonderful insrument but much harder and more complicated than most people give it credit for. Nice one x
My favorite RUSH song!! Great job!!
Really, really good.
The best compliment I can give you is this: if it was Geddy sat there instead of you I'd only be slightly more impressed.
This is a great song and you do it justice.
I agree totally with your presentation and the little riff on 2:44… superb. And it's also one of my favorite albums with Vapor trails…
OMG you killed this song. Love the fills coordinated rhythmically with the drums....sometimes even better than what Geddy does!
so many good licks and fills in this one
Yes.
@constantine2112 Thanks Constantine. This was a first take, practice run so I wasn't that concerned with the error - it actually took the pressure off having made one so early in the song and I assumed I'd be doing it again. When I played it back to check the levels and all, I knew I would have a hard time doing it better so I was willing to live with the opening note clunker. That run you mentioned is a killer.
Outstanding!
great job! i just saw them in houston,tx- they were perfect as always. they are the best. how does geddy play and sing at the same time with all those difficult riffs. they played this song and it's one of the best- continue playing. love to watch
Absolutley super, phrasing is spot on too wow
Thanks a lot.
Love the triplets @ 3:49...well done as always. Neils lyrics never stop amazing me.
Beautiful.
You're inspiring me as much as Geddy is, maybe more.
Great stuff. Always loved the 7/4 time on the bridge of that song.
Thanks.
GREAT VERSION, MASTER REALLY MASTER.
CHILE ENJOY WITH RUSH, THE BIG BAND AND YOU MASTER IN THE BASS.
Thanks a lot.
My favourite song of all time :) Stellar playing my dude!
Awesome! I’m glad you liked it.
Damn, just when I thought I had this song down on the bass. Your runs are just sick.
I wish they were my runs.
TJH3113 Yea I know what you mean. Whats the next Rush song you plan on singing?
@Jalreal
I'm a big fan of both this album and Power Windows and these albums contain a number of my favorites. I was never a big fan of Tom Sawyer.
Thanks a lot. This is also one of my favorite periods of the band.
Wow! Thanks a lot. This is my favorite song.
always loved this song haha, TIME STAND STILL!!! bridge instrumental breakdown is my favorite
Cool.
Hey TJ, you really inspired me into buying one bass and trying to mimic Geddy Lee too! Thanks for the videos!
@Legionbass19
Thanks. I'm glad the song took on a deeper meaning for you.
You're more than forgiven. You're ready to replace Geddy at anytime :-) at least as a roadie ... ;-) Perfect technique, clean, precise, on time, and right accentuation every time. You're awesome!
Thanks a lot. I'd gladly roadie for Geddy.
TJH3113 Troy could fill in if Geddy got hurt or ill. Love the covers. I share them in Music Groups all the time.
If one of my friends asks me how to play a Rush song... I recommend them your videos.
It's one of my favorites. Thanks.
Excellent. Have fun.
amazing
Music Man bass = The best. Awesome tone.
Everything by RUSH is phenomenal! I have my son pull up the lyrics on each song. I really like the lyrics to Subdivisions. RUSH is totally cerebral. Good job Troy! Thanks. Marvine :-0
Yes, they are a wonderful band, aren't they? Thank you.
Awesome job. Your videos are teaching me Ozzy and now Rush! I better hurry up in case they get taken down.
I agree, that's my life sentence, too, 3113! I lost my voice, in Baltimore, in 2011, singing this song!
Thank you so much for this.
It was my pleasure. I think I did another version that might sound a little bit better.
Great cover man... Very solid notes and a diferent right hand style :)
Been enjoying your videos since I first started jamming to Rush on bass around 8-9 years ago! This song has some of my favourite bass fills/licks, I think my personal picks are at 2:58 and 4:55.
Always nice to hear from "long-timers". Yeah, this song has some great riffs in it, doesn't it?
Brilliant!
Thank you.
@denmalski
I'm glad if it helped out. I'm not really sure where he plays it, but this position was the most comfortable for me.
great bass cover!!
@monkeymagnumpi Thanks. Don't sell yourself short, there are no easy RUSH bass lines. The most important thing is that we're playing them the best we can.
Yes.
So it is. That happens from time to time.
This is one of my favorite Rush songs too, and I've been wanting to learn how to play it on the bass for a while now.
Played a 5 string in a band I was in while stationed in the US Air Force in Hawaii. From 1995-97. But rarely used the B string. Sold it went back to a 4 string
I find the B string makes a great thumb-rest.
@TOPmusicman8 Thanks. I often wonder the same thing myself. I heard they're playing this song on the current tour. Maybe to tie in with the whole "time" thing?
Yes, you were correct.
Thanks. I don't have any tab, sorry. I might be able to do a video but it won't be right away, sorry again.
GD man! you have some beautiful basses!!!
i love your stuff and have learned a ton from you about style of playing. thank you for sharing!
Thanks a lot.
Great Job!!
Thank you.
Thank you. I'm sorry, but I don't. I play by ear and memory.
@as78266
Thank you very much. This is one of my favorites as well.
Had to come check out your first videos especially with your stingray!! You have had this channel for a very long time!! Good job keeping it up!! I need to step up my channel somehow
To bad Geddy never got into playing a stingray! They would have sounded killer on a Rush mix!!
Yes, this is a very early one, isn't it? Thanks Jeremy and take care!
Thank you.
you play very well, keep it up, you have talent
Thanks a lot.
Can you make an education video about using your index finger like a pick? The technique you used in the last part.
@21Rushisaband12
No. I looked seriously into getting a Wal back in '91. Went to the Bass Centre in Los Angeles, CA and played one - didn't think it was worth $3,000. We were on a trip to California at the time.
Troy ! How interesting, I was watching another Vid of yours and was wondering if you indeed had any 5 stringers, and voila here it is AND A BONUS! IMHO, THE GREATEST BAND FROM THE GREAT WHITE NORTH.
Richard! Yeah, this is my only 5 string. I don't play it very often.
maestro
@eclaros
Thank you. This might be my favorite song.
Thanks.
Thanks Troy got it now. Not avaliable on my mobile (cell) which is why i missed it now seen it on the comp x
LOVE the riff at 2:44 as well!
@marshman500
No, he used a Wal bass. This sounds closer to a Wal than the other two so that's exactly why I used it.
@Stoovey24
If I were forced to choose a favorite song this would probably be it, though I'm fond of Mission (as you are) as well. I had been a big fan of theirs for 8 or 9 years already when this album came out. Album-wise I like Permanent Waves and Power Windows among others.
Glad there is love for Power windows, one of their most Synth albums....but the bass, guitars, drums , vocals too are great!!
You didn't like RUSH...man, those bass lines are some of the best...for this reason you chose them.
@evassar92
Awesome.
@TheDoctor11251
It's a Musicman Stingray 5 String.
I really like most of your basses. You should try a Lakland. I think you'd be impressed by their versatility. I don't work for them either. I'd just like to see how you'd incorporate them in what you do. I've have a 55-02 since 09 and I'm still finding cool sounds out of it.
I never see many Laklands around but, if I do, I will check it out.
Awesome bass playing. I am wanting to know a few things about the sound you have with the Musicman. What positions do you have the Humbucker set to and what strings are you using? Flatt or round. Also the action of the bass. I have never heard the Musicman sound like this. Are you using a Sansamp with it? Sorry for so many questions but I have a Musicman Stingray 5 HH and never got the sound like this. Very good.
perfect cover the best over the internet...by the way...nice masks...have a neil peart´s one?
@Strenzkee
Thanks a lot and I agree, RUSH is the greatest...
Thanks. You never know.
That's a good reason. I'm hit or miss with it myself.
@twinstickpete
Thanks a lot. Some of my favorite lyrics as well.
Sorry I was thinking of Distant Early Warning. I still have my Grace Under Pressure concert shirt... it's very frail I wore it so much when I was a kid.
With a little time and effort anything is possible. Thanks and take care.
@torgoth74
Yes, he used a Wal bass. Thanks.
Ive always wondered how to play that fill at 2:43 thanx every performance I 've seen before always cut to the drum fill at the same point and not the bass
brazil love rush
Cool.
great job! best on here, much better than my version
