So I cannot believe that eBay is my first channel sponsor on this latest upload!! Their support means so very much as it genuinely helps my channel. I have been funding these bikes builds mostly on my own which has been challenging! eBay’s help in sourcing replacement parts has been invaluable. So please, if you could kindly like this video and watch it until the end, I will appreciate it so much. Let’s continue growing this channel together and let’s take on many more bikes!! Much love! ❤
Great news!😊
Great news! Im following your buils from Argentina 🇦🇷
Underrated bike if u wanna give it some pose value google OWO1 replica group and do the conversion mate they look shmick ! No room for your lovely Mrs but she can ride the bb
Will do
My understanding of torque wrenches is that you should not open bolts with them, and really shouldn't put a lot of force in. They are calibrated and easily damaged. Get a breaker bar!
100% correct, (always use the right tool for the job!)
First time I've seen someone use their foot on a torque wrench
Putting a foot a foot to increase leverage on a torque wrench is a no no but smacking it with lump hammer is fine and will do no damage at all
A tip that may help on the build. Construct a stand for the engine and put the new frame in top of the engine then build the bike around it 👍
I have restored dozens of motorcycles over the past 30 odd years, and I can remember ringing round the uk to breakers and reading classified ads so that I could get the parts I needed, often without success. Thanks to ebay anyone can get the parts they want new or secondhand, which makes any project so much easier and stress free. Along the way I have acquired most of the tools needed such as brake piston pullers, brake bleeding tool, steering head bearing remover, carb vacuum gauges, ultrasonic cleaner, zinc plating kit, spray guns etc. etc. and just like you I learned along the way and had tremendous fun and satisfaction doing it, well done for the videos I really enjoy watching them.
It was a lot harder in the pre internet days, but more fun traveling around breakers yards, never has to buy a nut and bolt in those days just needed pockets 😂
I'm looking forward to watching this project go forward, no fancy tools or BS!
Me and my socket set doing bits!
I'm excited to experience this with you. I'm an "old dog" and you know what they say about that..😊 looking forward to the next sequence of the build. It's too damn hot in Tucson to ride so get a move on with the next episode 😂😂 perhaps a little parts cash will help. 😉
You’re doing great on these rebuilds. Really impressed how you threw yourself into it and keep going
Thank you!
Hi Rye, thanks for another great upload, im really enjoying following your progress. Heat will most likely help with removing the studs as the aluminium of the block will expand faster than the steel studs. Also, you can carefully try tightening the studs to break the corrosion seal before undoing them. Its an old engineers trick my Dad taught me but be careful not to go mad tightening and strip the threads. Another good source of info is Delboys Garage channel, he must have about 10 years worth of useful uploads on there! 👍
I wouldn't personally listen to much DelBoy has to say on mechanicing, TBH!!
Having done a fair bit of this sort of stuff I’m really impressed at how well you’ve doing. Great work, looking fwd to more vids
Thank you next upload coming soon!!
Awesome! Can't wait to see how this pans out! A quick suggestion for the camera though. If you get it focused on the part you're working on, and switch autofocus off, it'll stop randomly focusing on your trouser leg and getting the intended subject out of focus. Good luck, and can't wait to see how this project pans out!
🏴 love from Scotland 🏴
I bought my Thunderace in 1999 and still own it, have been all over europe on it, and a few track days too (plus IoM and the Nurburgring to boot). It's now "retired"/2nd bike but I still occasionally use it. I've done most of the usual jobs on it so know my way round it pretty much. If it's of use, I have some general and some specific tips. 1. Use a block of wood when jacking anything, don't jack metal to metal. 2. Don't use a ratchet for high torque applications (undoing tight nuts/bolts) - use a T-bar (where you can) or better, where you can a breaker bar! 3. Especially don't use a Torque wrench for undoing anything, especially tight stuff, as that can ruin it's accuracy. Thunderace specific, 1. I'd recommend removing the carbs before taking the engine out (I know, too late now... ;) ). 2. I'd recommend replacing the choke cable at this point, they commonly rust up inside, and this would be a good time to replace it whilst you already have it disconnected. 2. The sprocket cover gasket condition is important because unusually, there out of the sprocket cover bolts, there is one long one which goes all the way through the crankcase and has oil behind it which leaks if the gasket isn't used or in good condition. 4. If the original exhaust headers are in good condition, keep them (they are super rare) as long as the power valve is also still working (not seized (you can often un-seize by manually turning the vale back and forward with mole grips)). At this point check/inspect the power valve cables, they are known to need replacing (and ensure you can manually move the power valve in the exhaust, make sure it's not seized because if it is, you can strip the plastic gears in the motor). The bike is much nicer at the bottom end, WITH the exup in place and also they are worth more the more original they are, so I'd strive to try to keep this stuff! 5. The factory workshop manual is worth having, and was hundreds of pounds from Yamaha but you can "aquire" it from the internet now for free... ;) If I think of anything else, or you want to pick my brains, just let me know (I'm also fairly local to you). HTH! :)
I think you will be making a mistake if you don't service all brake callipers. Whilst you have the bike full stripped down it seams silly not to and besides if you don't do them now, you will be doing them shortly after getting the bike going. Good luck with the build
It's a fair point I am going to give them a go
Talking about brake calipers, you said they were in really good condition then proceeded to throw them on the floor.... take your time and be careful
Awesome. I'm loving the content and it's great to see your channel grow.
Thanks so much!
Hey, so for the studs, I'm sure it's been stated, but tighten the outside nut tighter while holding the inside nut with another wrench then try loosening the stud with the inside nut, maybe a little penetrating oil and heat, but that's how I've always removed studs.
The shot at 3.35 is striking, a bodyless beast.
Good for you for tackling this project, some of the techniques are a bit questionable, but please carry on and learn where you could have done it better or safer. Well done 👍
Proper novice I know!!
Definitely worth talking to Abba Stands UK about sponsoring your vids as their stands are epic
Coming along nicely, but I can't believe that you are doing this all in your driveway. Looking forward to your next video.
I can't believe it either sometimes 😅
Could of used the wheelie bins behind you with a bit of wood and string lol.
Keep going. It's going to look as good as the blackbird. Oh where is the blackbird 🤔
I dropped the fairing off to be painted on the 01st of June.... unbelievable
Great video and love your content but please dont do that to a torque wrench. I have various breaker bars and then scaffold lengths when things get serious. Keep up the good work👍
Thanks for the tip
If you encounter a situation like this in the future where you're not in a workshop and have to replace a frame or have to strip off a bike completely, go to a hardware store and get a two legged ladder, open it in a A shape and put it over the bike.
Then you can hang and support the frame with a strong strap and you are able to remove suspension and stuff.
Just make sure that the ladder is tall enough so you have enough room to work under it, secure its legs so it doesn't collapse when weight is added..
Glad to see a new video on this bike but I'd love to hear news about the Blackbird too.
It's just a nicer and more legendary bike than the Thunderace..
Especially considering the build plans you have with it..
I didn't know that there was such a thing as an Englishman without a shed. I'm shocked! 😉
Getting there, to remove studs you need to hold that front nut with a spanner at the same time to stop spinning. And yes heat would help. Get yourself an ultrasonic cleaner for those carbs or send them out to be done will come out like new. Congrats on the sponsor to pretty much perfect for a project like this
did a job like this, but not to the point of replacing the frame,on my zzr1200,replaced every bolt with a2 stainless etc...polished everything, new lines, discs bearings ,seals the list is endless, but what a reward once finished..never sees rain and fired once a month to keep things in check.know what you're taking on and i'm keen to see the next phase.
Last time I replaced some exhaust studs I emptied half a can of WD40 on them and left overnight,if you’re just spraying bolts or whatever then trying to undo 5 minutes later you’re not giving it time to do it’s job.
You done really good
very nice but.... when can we expect an update about the Blackbird?
Holding the frame up with no wheels etc? Strap a piece of wood across the top of the frame near the air box location with tie down straps and the sit the wood beam on two bar stools :) It worked fine on my Thunderace.
Good tip! I like it
Well done it looks amazing ❤❤
I know you’ve heard this several times but get yourself a Breaker Bar,you’ve probably stuffed your torque wrench as far as accuracy goes and your ratchet could potentially let go and possibly injure you in the process.
eBay is a lifesaver for bike parts, I’ve had parts from France and Germany in the past from there with zero hassle, actually cheaper than British prices and in excellent condition.
I love your courage lol.
Thoughts so far...
1/ You desperately need some more tools! A breaker bar for starters.
2/ If you'd taken the front wheel off first, then the forks, the weight in the back wheel would have kept the bike up on the stands. Then you could have dipped the nose to take off the rear wheel and swingarm.
3/ The original Thunderace rear shock is fully adjustable and has compression damping, rebound damping, spring preload & damping force adjustments. The replacement you've just bought only has two of those options.
The canister has an explosive warning on it because it's nitrogen pressurised.
The original shock is not a sealed unit and can be sent away for a full service and re-gassing...
Yess thunderace !!!!
Yesssssssssss love your videos
With the exhaust studs, you needed to lock the two nuts together as you turn the studs out with the stud nearest the engine, two spanner’s turning in opposite directions.
Liking what you’re doing, not a great fan of plugs but what spurred me to comment was, ‘I reversed my car up to my new workmate’ pure comedy gold👍 you even had a banksman😁
UA-cam mechanic
My advice@@BikesofRye, is to always get a genuine factory workshop manual, not Haynes or Clymer, but the real deal
The incorrect use of tools is funny, Matt will be an enjoyer of the Torque wrench as a breaker bar lol
Get yourself a environmental/paddock mat. Saves the mess on your driveway, and is overall nicer to work on. Plus saves scratches on falling callipers.
You can probably install a rear blue spot off of a FZS1000 onto the TA with a small mod or two.
Blue spots seem to be really resistant to corrosion and seizing and every single one I’ve encountered never needed rebuilding
Really interesting video mate but what's happening with the blackbird 😊
Yes sorry about the Blackbird... I gave a business my fairing on the 01st of June and have been told about 3 times it was going to be ready next week when I chased but next week came and no fairing....
Great channel. I have subbed.
Fair play bringing the owd girl back dude🤙, Now then Rye you said you were going do a few Bike Meets are you sacking that idea off now buddy? 🤙💪
Get yourself a breaker bar. Euro car parts do a 2ft one for £14, itll save damaging your rachet and torque wrench.
Thank you will look into this
Too late now but once you had drilled a hole in the stud you should have tried an easyout. They go into the hole with a reverse thread so by tightening them you are actually removing the stud. Nearly always successful when I use them.
One should never use a torque wrench to undo fastenings. If it's not broken it will now be inaccurate.
Dude, you're best off not using your torque wrench for undoing. If you exceed to capacity of the wrench (i.e. by standing on it) it can knacker the accuracy. You can get a 600mm 1/2 drive breaker bar from Zoro tools for under 15 quid. Super handy for undoing tight things.
Good bikes I had 2 yamaha fzr1000exups and a thunderace plus thundercat. Fzr and thunderace use the same engine thunderace went through 4 engines though
Great to see the ACE rebuild. What type of rear shock did you buy and which company did you buy if from on fleabay?
I’ve restored 3 motorcyles and built about 11 engines on 1 of those benches.
@@mygi43543 no, I do have a garage.
Looking good, I look forward to seeing more on this one. Just a thought, instead of powder coating, are there any places that do Cerakote near you? Loads of colours available and is a better barrier against corrision too 👍
I didn't even know that was a thing? Thought powder coating was the norm
Alternatively you could avoid riding the bike on salty roads and even cheap spray paint will surfice as corrosion protection.
Its simply a matter of what type of environment and for what length of time you are going to expose the bike to
You need a breaker bar. I got an 18 inch one from halfords.
Nice one but get a breaker bar. Don't use a torque wrench like that.
Bike's of Ebay!
I see what you did there 🧐
Map gas torch or a welder is the only real routes to removing the studs cleanly. Just undoing them is luck otherwise if it snaps or not.
Is the new shock 3,-way adjustable?
If the old one had adjustable compression, dampening and rebound then why not rebuild it?
Heating the studs will make it harder due to them being steel and going into the aluminium block, the aluminium will expand more, tightening them. If you can't do it with the nuts in the way suggested by another person, you could use a Dremel to make a flat spot above and below on the threads, then use a set of grips to hold and carefully undo them. Too much force could snap them, spray them with WD-40 now and then leaving them a few hours or so to let it really penetrate before trying either way.
A bore will expand under heat.
@@dEaThNr84 the heat expands the aluminium and tightens onto the steel stud making it tighter. If it was steel into steel it's different as on exhaust bolts, always need some heat on old car exhausts for instance.
I would like to know the paperwork process of updating the V5 with a different frame number. I'm also in the same situation in this regard and am curious. :)
A little something to help. Good about EBAY!
You always make my day
@BikesofRye The biker community always chips in to help somehow. My pleasure ❤️
Why did you need to replace the front rotors?
I missed the pinch bolt on my thunder ace.
Have you finished the BB then?
You forgot to add a washer between the nuts when trying to remove the studs although not sure why ur removing the studs..? Why did u remove the canister from the rear suspension unit :S? It comes off with the shock absorber..
What happened to the Blackbird Rye ?.
He did an update 6 days ago. Waiting for painting etc
@@rayletaxi i would have been in Portugal 😎
I last see my fairing 8 weeks ago for the Blackbird... not happy at all. I am on the case
Great video's top tip buy yourself a breaker bar :) will save on the cost of a new rachet and torque wrench :) great work though
Have been meaning to get myself one
@@mygi43543 ha ha i never knew what one was for or how to use it :) Until a kind friend showed me :) If you need any help or advise I'm here to help and 5 min down the road :)
and buy your self a front stand that is puted to frame headstock or how it is called in your country.
Well ya only down the road i have one you can borrow :)
I’ve made the pinch bolt mistake myself 😂
Paint the forks yourself. Simoniz tough black paint is good.
I really admire your tenacity and spirit in taking on a project like this and its enjoyable to watch but my takeaway is just not to take on such a project. Its just simply not worth the effort and Im guessing the cost.
Im holding my breath for you to reveal just the cost of those replacement discs alone.
Regards and best of luck Andy
What happened to the Blackbird?
Yes sorry about the Blackbird I left a business my fairing on the 01st of June and am still to date waiting for it it's shocking
Have you got someone you can call on for advice mate?
❤
What's the latest with the Honda?
I am sorry for the lack of Blackbird content I entrusted a business to take care of my fairing and 8 weeks later and a number of times chasing them I still not received it. Its so frustrating
Why did u move the car and not the workbench?
I need to work in certain areas of the drive with the camera to be able to get the whole way around the bench if I needed it
Wheres the blackbird
Your right about those tyres being plastic, continental and sports bikes don't go together, bloody awful tyres.
You could have made life a bit easier by loosening most bolts while the wheels were still on it.. Torque wrench definitely not designed for opening. Need a breaker bar... Or gun
👍🏍
👍
Can't wait to see you make your Mrs do all the work in getting the lump in again 🤣
Brilliant... you've already got her pulling it out the boot
Don't use a torque wrench to unscrew bolts!!!
You could…. Streetfighter this baby. Naked and fat straight bars. Vinyl wrap the plastics…. Just an idea.
Hi I am also doing a motorcycle up that I purchased not working, the reason why I purchased it is the biggest thing though as I have terminal cancer and I thought doing something I really love would motivate me enough to get me out of my bedroom and actually do something obviously at my own pace & with me being so poorly I can no longer work so money is very tight indeed so it will have to be a bit at a time. My ultimate goal is too pass my bike test which I never got round to doing and sell the bike which is a YZF-R 125cc they look like a R1 & very big for a 125cc bike probably as big as a R6 anyway sell it pass my test and get a susuki bandit 600 then go to visit my best pal who lives in south wales about 5 hours from where I live, but I have really caught the bug for getting back on n a bike again maybe it will get me a few more months so I see it as quite important really to keep me going and want to do it before I run out of time and am permanently bedridden probably interned into my local hospice which is where I am going when the end gets near so I have a lot to do but watching your videos has given me some more motivation to get on with it
Never get anything powder coated, it’s rubbish, it’s only a benefit for the supplier. Get them wet electrostatically wet painted instead.
Need some Tommy/breaker bars rather than flogging your ratchets!
Maybe with the sponsorship money buy some decent tools👍
Take it you don't care about your car bumper?
Boss
Mate I think your girlfriend is stronger than you😂 that's the second engine I've seen her lug!
Please don’t use torque wrenches like that 🤦♀️
Don't you have to declare that e bay sponsored the video in the video itself?
It's a good point well noted!! It's my first one I apologise for that
I think you got yourself in so much trouble and money spent for nothing.I think the frame was fine and could hold for another 100 years before it needed to be changed. But then again, its your pocket and time...
Heat will help remove the exhaust studs don't just try to undo go backward and forwards with WD40 try now do a penetrating can WHAT ABOT THE BALCKBIRD ?????????????????
Definitely worth talking to Abba Stands UK about sponsoring your vids as their stands are epic
