I remember buying the album at that time, because it was celebrated in various music magazines and after the first listen I just thought "What is this for a groat?" About a year later I heard the album again, and, well, not so bad. I liked one or two songs. Heard the album again, and again. At some point it "clicked". Today, many years later, Radiohead is for me possibly the most style-defining and interesting band since Pink Floyd, even since the Beatles!

@ISeeGhosts001 not True. You can hear the development through the albums. With The Bends it wasn't the chords which suggested progression, rather the supplementary sounds and the arrangements of the songs. With OK Computer Tom Yorke's melodic footprint is there, just that the starting point has changed. The chords are more complex and the soundscape, bass and percussion, and production are just more complex, well thought of and interesting in their own right.

Radiohead songs are never immediate, just about every single thing they do requires a few listens to unlock, but when you do, you will have a song that 'lasts' the rest of your life, no throwaway shit here, no pop songs, no radio-friendly unit shifters that you get sick of after about 10 listens never to return to it.
If a Radiohead song hits you and sticks, you will never tire of it, no matter how many times you hear it, for me that means they are writing timeless, intelligent music that will stand the test of time.

This song and album was revolutionary with the mix of guitar elements with electronic/synth effects. Not just having guitars and synths, but making those sounds interlocked and indistinguishable. Also Gregorian chant influences, electronica, folk, etc. These eclectic influences never really brought together in this way before. I remember people calling album the Sgt. Pepper's of the 90s (referring to The Beatles experimental groundbreaking album from 1967).

Guess I missed the other reactions on Radiohead... Don't know if Polo has reacted to Fade Out (Street Spirit) yet, but that one is awesome. I've yet to see a man be able to sing so high, for so long and that beautifully. Tom Yorke vocals are unique (so is the band in general).

I totally agree with the Pink Floyd aspect. I always thought there were similarities in their way of composing and exploring music, mainly in OK Computer and Floyd's albums from the 70's. Every time I hear the drums opening on Climbing Up The Wall, I can't help myself having Nick Mason in mind. 😅

Believe me, some Radiohead you have to really be into that specific vibe (Kid A for example is a lot of people's favorite but it isn't really my thing for the most part), but I feel like this album was still pretty accessible for most people to listen.

It was a really profound shared experience, especially back in the the pre-internet days.

The evolution of Radiohead's sound, their ability to play such a wide range of styles, and their creativity and drive to experiment, is next level, the only bands I can think of that even come close, are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Jefferson Airplane, but that one's debatable, since they kept reforming under different names and I'm unsure how many of the original band members made it through to Starship, which I'm fairly certain was the last iteration of the band. That and they went from the trippy, timeless, White Rabbit, to 80's adult contemporary, soft rock, so while it is indeed a dramatic change, I doubt anyone would say it was for the better.
While I certainly hope for more Radiohead reactions, I can't wait to see you react to some Portishead, they did an amazing concert in Roseland NYC, where they had a full philharmonic accompanying them. I would recommend the entire concert, but a few highlights are, Roads, Glory Box, Sour Times and Only You. Also, their studio tracks, Humming and Western Eyes, shouldn't be missed.
