Tool and Radiohead are the real legacy of early 90's music. They are the most creative and challenging to listen to; they make great albums, not just great singles, a rarity in the current musical climate. Thom Yorke, MJK, Mike Patton, and Chris Cornell are hands down the best male vocalists from the era. Pyramid Song songs almost like a Bond film opening number.

@@anthonypallen7919 Perhaps as an artist, Patton may be overrated (and I'm not sure I agree with you on that), but the fact that the guy holds the world record for male vocalists in terms of range is rather remarkable. You should see the stuff that Patton does outside of his bands. Trent is one of the eras great producers, and The Fragile is one of my top ten album all time, but he's not the singer on par with an MJK or Thom Yorke. It's like comparing Tu Pac and Dr. Dre; both are GOATs, but Dre will always be known more for his producing while Pac's legacy is his poetry.

This is sort of a strange introduction to the band as this is jumping into their most experimental era, but it's still a really great song. You'll likely get a lot of recs for stuff off OK Computer, Kid A, and maybe In Rainbows and A Moon Shaped Pool, but I actually think a really good starting place is the Hail to the Thief album. It's basically a blend of their more guitar-driven 90s sound with the electronic experimentalism they delved into at the turn of the century, so offers a look at the various sides of the band in what I suspect might be an appetite-whetting way.

As someone who was there when Radiohead started, but didn't get into them until later, I find it hard to justify starting out anywhere but _Pablo Honey._ They picked up where Pink Floyd left off and their catalog isn't just a collection of albums, but the evolution of a sonic lifeform and to pick up in it's young adulthood where it gets more complex is to miss out on the journey it took to get there. Sure, we can recommend _DSOTM_ as a start for its accessibility, but Floyd really needs to be listened to from it's early days--If not _Piper,_ then at least _Saucerful of Secrets_ to see the embryonic become a born creature.

Radiohead has a very wide range from from very grungy rock with Creep, over this eeryness you just experienced and onto broken electro beats with Idioteque.
Personal recommendations though have to be "Exit Music (for a film)" That track brings tears to my eyes every time.

Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead is a legit orchestral composer. This song is amazing in that they took a 'Doors'-style base - I get "The End" vibes - added the string arrangement, and then finished it with the experimental touches such as the relatively unique time signature. Several simple parts, but as a whole it creates a beautiful song. You'll notice this is a trademark of Radiohead...they aren't necessarily coming up with entirely new ideas, but they have a way of molding different ideas together to create songs that popular as well as underground music lovers can enjoy.

The track is evocative of it's title even without any clear reference to that ancient culture within it's lyrics. The melody is pure bliss from time immemorial. The piano accompaninent has an off-kilter quality to it at first but as the other instruments are layered into the song it's beat suddenly becomes so gratifying. For me, the climax comes with the introduction of full strings. If you want something...similar, check out Like Spinning Plates from the I Might Be Wrong Live Recordings release peeanna lover.

Radiohead is an absolute trip and I suggest backing up and starting with their album Pablo Honey, half of the fun with Radiohead, is the insane evolution over their discography, which you can hear in every album. A few tracks to keep an eye out for based on your love of this song, Street Spirit off of The Bends, No Surprises off of OK Computer and Motion Picture Soundtrack off of Kid A! You can also read about the inspirations for their albums and songs, Thom Yorke and the other members have discussed and written about it.
Apologies for the long post, but I have to take a second and highly encourage you to check out some Massive Attack and Portishead, the genre is trip hop, a blend of jazz, r&b, hip hop, lounge, acid jazz and psychedelic rock, combined to create the most chill, laid back and groovy, funky music ever. Massive Attack, try starting with tracks Dissolved Girl, Group Four and Black Milk, off of their Mezzanine Album; and for Portishead, try Roads, Glory Box, Sour Times and Only You, from their Live in Roseland NYC Concert, one of the best live performances you'll see, with full philharmonic accompanying them. Also their studio tracks for Humming and Western eyes, are amazing tracks.

Ha! Maybe their strangest song as an introduction. I'm in love with this song. Absolutely haunting and beautiful. Probably my favorite Radiohead tune. I find it virtually impossible to get the time signature.

I think they are to the early 21st century what the Beatles were to the middle-late 20th century. They both capture and express something essential to their respective times. The Beatles music was full of hope, love and absurdity. Radiohead is full of a sense of awe inspiring loss.

Yes, yes, yes! I had aspirations of being the one to introduce you to RH, but someone beat me to it. I'm joining Patreon so I can get the full reactions as you go down this huge rabbit hole. They may not rise to be your favorite band, but I suspect they will easily become top three. Enjoy the ride my friend!

and most their best stuff came out since that stuff too! I mean In Rainbows is jam packed with 10/10 songs.
Some reason a lot of people just jumped off of the bus after Ok Computer. That was only the beginning of their wild journey really.

I absolutely LOVE how you realize that the piano part in the beginning is actually offbeat when the rest of the instruments and drums come in. Even if you don't consciously realize it or are aware of it, it radically changes the feel of the song. It's not just the song being fleshed out; there's some kind of tectonic shift that's difficult to put your finger on. I think this may be one of, if not my favorite Radiohead songs.

Thom has said that this song took literally 5 minutes to write.
it's just so effortless for Radiohead to write absolute masterpieces.
they are one of the few bands ive seen live who actually perform better than in the studio.
every one of them are masterful musicians.
they have so many good songs for you to check out

I clicked on this as fast as I clicked on your Nirvana reaction!
Did you know that they first released In Rainbows themselves online for “pay what you want” before the regular release? You could get it for free or pay whatever you chose and they made something like 3 million right away. How cool is that?
I have also loved this band since the early 90’s (along with Tool and others) and I finally saw them live just about 5 years ago. It was amazing and it was the most chill large crowd I have ever experienced! 😅 it was like everyone there was relaxed and friendly…like the people all just had this connection because of the music. I’ve been to many shows in my life and this was a very unique experience.
I like all of their stuff equally, as much as it evolves. I would suggest Karma Police, Fake Plastic Trees, Sulk, Thinking about You, Just, Nude, The Bends, All I Need, and True Love Waits

Nobody does quietly eery and gorgeous like Radiohead(not their only bag - they have many many), so there are plenty of such songs ahead for you! I've enjoyed your reactions for a while now, you just got a new Sub. I am your typical music lover - classic 70s rock, the Blues - I came of age to 90's hip hop and grunge - saw the birth of electronic dance music - and with all of that, my 3 favorite artists are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd, and at the top - Radiohead. 9 albums of magic. 5 albums in Rolling Stone 500 greatest albums, their bona fides are as legit as they come. Still together, same 5 members, 30 years after "Creep" made them worldwide in 1992. That song rocks, but they evolved into SO MUCH more - this song as example 1. It hits me every time when the beautiful but hard to quite catch pattern is brough to life by the drums kicking in (a waltz beat I believe). I'd check out "Paranoid Android" to get maybe their best known song after 'Creep' and one that offers a pretty encompassing vibe of just what they can do- but as for the dark slow beautiful powerful songs, I'd jump right to "How to Disappear Completely" and "Exit Music(for a film)." A lot of people are thrown by 'Pyramid Song', but you felt the mastery and emotional and sonic effect immediately, so I think you might just truly love falling deep into this band. Thanks for the great analysis, and honest reaction!

I've listened to thousands of albums I love and admire... many can be pretty unknown or underrated... but in all honesty Radiohead have made the best hit-rate of albums over any other band for me. Amazing such a well-known band went so far off the rails in their music experiments. In that sense they're a little like the Beatles. The weirdness or challenging aspect of their music pays off big-time in the long term. They're the gift that keeps giving once you "click". Of the 20 or so big bands from my youth... this is probably the only one I still listen to on the regular and it still sounds so fresh.
