Stretching Her Legs

  • A bit of spring weather in Dunbar has allowed Barry to take the Lynsey B out of Cromwell Harbour to stretch her legs after nearly seven months.
He moved the boat from Cromwell to Victoria live on the OMAHB Facebook channel for Jeff to test whether we can conduct live broadcasts from the boat this season - after a successful test we will be doing this, so watch this space!
Once the live broadcast was done Barry took the Lynsey B to sea for a quick run to test all the systems to make sure everything is as it should be.
With more bad weather in the forecast next week, we're now patiently waiting on a spell of decent weather to get the new creels in the water and soaking. Fingers crossed that Barry and the Lynsey B will be back out fishing soon!
Don't forget to visit the One Man And His Boat website at www.omahb.com and visit the merchandise shop.

Barry it was such a beautiful day, and great to finally meet you and see you on the Lynsey B
I always say Hi to her when I'm at the harbour
It's, so sad to think some of the fishermen will have to give up they're jobs and boats, I've seen one up for sale already it's just so sad
Yes I don't understand why the government isn't putting money in the fishing industry, it's just unbelievable
It was great to see that big smile on you're face and see the Lynsey B out at sea
And Jeff doing a sterling job running from one harbour to the other, by jove you don't half get some exercise there Jeff
It was interesting seeing you opening the bridge Barry, and can imagine you at 10 a big responsibility Lovely to see you at sea again, Watched Saving Life's at Sea last night great job done by Dunbar Lifeboat people under very difficult circumstances here's to good fishing Barry Jeff and Lynsey all the best Anne

Great to see you back on the briney again and rearing to go Barry, summer fishing is just getting under way here on the south coast but it looks like it's going to be a slow start down to the water temperature . As they say lots of effort with little success so far. Why do these politicians always think they know best without taking onboard the views and ideas of the fishers who are at the front line doing the job! I despair at some of the things they come out with and then they turn round 180 degrees when the damage is done, JOBSWORTHS.

    • @onemanandhisboat

      Hi Robbie.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment, and you're absolutely spot on about the politics of it all.
You wouldn't ask an electrician to bake a cake...so why do these politicians listen to everyone else, apart from the fishermen....simple answer they don't want us...they want big buck ships, landing in bulk, then let's not forget their love wind turbines that they pollute the sea with😡😡😡
I've said it for a long time now. It's not about the environment ( even though they let you think that) it's about how deep their pocket can go for the next profit making scheme 😡😡😡😡
Anyway, I hope you have a great season, too, bud.
      Stay safe.

I retired 17 years ago and bought an Angling Boat on the Tyne as a hobby. I was not new to Boats, being a former Royal Marine. I really enjoyed it but other commitments forced me to sell it after about ten years. When I was out Fishing, I could not believe the number of strings of Lobster Pots. It was like going through a Maze. However, a lot of these were not set by Professionals but by Lads like myself. All they had to do was apply for a licence and could set up to eight pots. I did not take it up myself. Multiply this by thousands around the Country and surely this is one of the reasons for the decline in stock.

      Hi Peter
Thank you so much for your comment, and I sight on you're experience.
I always love to hear other folks' dealings with this nightmare that is fishing.
It comes down to the basics, either bad management or non-existent management, but things will never change when you get academics making the rules on a subject they know very little about.
You don't as an electrician to bake you a cake after all.
It's the same with all these government groups that are there to support the seas, all hot air if you ask me.🙈
Anyway, best stop there before I really start ranting🤣🤣🤣

Morning Barry, here in Guernsey we've lost 50% of our fleet due to restrictions (don't even mention the french and the 6 mile limit) and fuel prices, it's killing the fishing, give it 10 years and there be none left here.

I really hope things change for you, Guernsey men soon. After all, you're more of an island than we are, and need the fruit of the sea.

@@onemanandhisboat During Brexit we argued with the French for our 12 mile limit, they tried to blockade our harbour and then when our Navy came in to protect our fleet they then threatened to turn our electric off, the Channel Islands get 95% of our electric from France. We had to settle for a 6 mile limit and they have surrounded us netting/potting/dredging everything that comes in from the south south/west and they can catch what they want with no restrictions.

I'm sure this must be mentioned all the time but would it be a good idea to bring the lobsters in berry ashore so the fry can be nurtured in controlled conditions to improve their survival rate then released back into the sea to increase the stock levels in the area?

Their is a hatchery just up the Rd at North Berwick, but it's only part-time ( funding🙄🙈)
It's definitely the right foot forward and a great suggestion. It just takes the right group to put that into fruition, unfortunately their doesn't seem to be very many people want to take up that mantle 🤷‍♂️😲
The government should definitely manage gear amounts next that's more of an issue than stock.🤷‍♂️😁👌

Gday mate good to see you getting it going aagain , in our state we are under a 6 year ban from taking snapper ,problem is now when you go out you are plauged with baby snapper just about every hook up is one they are becoming a pest we still have 2 more years to go and hopefully it will be over ,any marine crustation with eggs here must be thrown back in nth queensland or queensland in general you canott take female mud crabs at all but if you live in the northern territory its ok unless they are carrying eggs the same as our blue swimmer crabs the same with the lobster /crayfish females with eggs must go back . they say that the cray fishery in tasmania is the best managed fishery in the world for sustainability anyway all the best for the season .

      Hi buddy boy.
Wow, thank you for that information, bud. I found that very interesting.
I definitely think long term this is a brilliant plan by our Scottish government, it the 1st time they've actually done anything useful 🙈🤣🤣🤣🤣
But if they don't cap the gear, I think all this will be in vain. 🙈
Let's hope we get a great balance and a fair deal for all who fish the seas, and in a few years, who knows, we might be as sustainable as the Aus🤷‍♂️🤞🙏😁👌
Also, in the short term, I fear for boats struggling as is witch out this adding to their strains.....problem is here, we don't have a lot of scope for a diverse fishery. 😞
We are either regulated to the hilt on what we can catch, or their is nothing to catch as all the foreign boats are scooping them all up before they can come inshore to breed🙈
It's all a vicious circle, buddy.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
All the very best, my friend 😁

Taking the boat out of the harbour sure brought out the smiles and the happiness was noted. Please don't take offence but seeing you run around the harbour to raise the bridge took me back to the days we saw Aneka Rice running about on tv. That thought made me laugh😂. You said it will take 2 weeks to condition the creels; can that soaking be done at the harbour or am I missing something?

      Hi Michael.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment.
Great description on the bridge cycle 🤣🤣🤣 I bet Aneka would be so proud of me 🙈🤪🤪🤪🤣🤣🤣🤣
The harbour trust doesn't let us soak creals in the harbour due to the lack of space a frequency the harbour is used.
Back in the day this is how the men used to soak some pots, until 1 day a boat severally damaged due to these pots, that's when the harbour trust decided it was safer just to ban pot soaking.😁👌
I hope that explains why we don't soak them in the harbour.
      All the very best, sir.😁
