  • A Wintry Solo Mountain Camp in the MSR Access 1 ...... Winter is on the way
    In this video, I head into the mountains of the Lake District National Park in a new tent which I am testing, the MSR Access 1. This is marketed as a 4 season tent. It is lightweight and robust. I was very impressed and will complete a full review in due course.
    The temperatures plummeted as the sun set and the stars and milky way were shining bright in the night sky. The winds picked up ahead of an approaching weather front and the tent experienced some buffeting winds the next day ahead of the front.
    I also used the Thermarest NeoAir XTHERM NXT MAX for the first time and I was impressed with the warmth, thickness and overall comfort of the mat. It's an expensive undertaking, but a long term investment if you're keen to camp through the colder months of the year.
    I was treated to a stunning sunrise in the bitingly cold, still air and it was spectacular to watch from the comfort of the tent. As always, a few craft beers and rambling tent talks along the way.
    I'll be announcing the winner of the 1L MSR Reactor stove in the next video - so stay tuned and be sure to watch the entire video as you never know where the next giveaway will be buried!
    Thank you for watching and I'll see you on the next adventure, Chris.

    Winter month's have to be great for yourself, out there, hardly no one around, good for you mate, and you can't go wrong with sausage and beans, you should buy some tins of Branston sausage & beans, stick them in a plastic container, take them with you on a camp, heat up... simple, tasty and effective 👌🏻

    Some lovely shots there Chris - your filmography is top notch. Nice tent as well - bit on the snug side for me as I prefer a 2 person tent for solo camping. Managed to get out myself up to Langdale last weekend, weather was amazing, cold night and a frozen tent in the morning but well worth it!! But now my banister is taken over with a tent drying out 😂

    A nice shout out to Going Solo YT channel (Todd).
    That guy is one talented cook. He is Premier League cuisine, you (and I) are Vauxhall Conference!!! I'm happy if I can bring my water to a rolling boil!! Ha ha!! Nice video. Nice tent. It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on it after some strong winds are put to it. I've often wondered if inner pitch first tents are inherently weaker in strong wind then an exoskeleton design like the Hilleberg Soulo or the TN Southern Cross....
    Nice video.
    Regards, Wadi.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching mate - I just like the ease and simplicity of those dehydrated meals - just so easy. I don't think the strength of the likes of the Soulo can be beaten, especially with the 10mm DAC poles. The pole system on this seems pretty robust, I'll review it in a standalone video after a few more camps.

    MSR are the only tents I've never fancied. Always appear too sappy when push comes to shove and the access in particular is a very expensive tent. Doesn't do enough for the money I guess.

    This was brilliant. The tent looks a tool!! Love that high bath tub and presumably that’s why they can afford to not have fly flush to the floor. Clever design - maximising ventage on a 4 season. I know folk
    will say about spin drift. They love saying the word itself - like we all live in Norway or something lol. Totally identify with wot you say about people who can’t/won’t camp and endurance and I don’t get it either!! 😂😂😂

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  8 місяців тому +2

      Haha, quality. Yeah, usually the fly would be straight to the deck - I was surprised at that, but at the end of the day - it aids air flow. The design seems great. There's more room in this than my Hille Soulo - plus additional guy out points. Thanks for watching mate

    Great video mate very relaxing watch. I've a helm one and the issues I have with it are my head touches the innertop when im on my matt (6ft1 I am) and the saginess at either end of the inner, the acess is very similar in shape and size but without the helm ones problems proper shame about the colour or I'd 100% buy it . Hi Chris, another cracking video,It has given me a spur to get the Allak 2 out and head up onto the West Pennine moors again with my Grandson.
    Shame about the Flextail, I’m going to purchase the older version i.e. with the light and pump combined looks a lot more versatile to me.
    I didn’t have much luck with my single hand held Ocoopa ,I had it in my chest pocket wrapped inside its own bag but somehow there must have been some condensation in the pocket and consequently it stopped the warmer from working. Needless to say I sent it back and was given a full refund (purchased on Amazon).Maybe bump into you some time on the moors….you never know.

    I like the tent but to be honest not the colour but a nice small pack size is a big bonus, as was the room inside. Honest review on the pump and a real fail, so the sooner they introduce the USB version the better I think. As it was getting dark the views were great and defo different than in the summer but winter camping, not for me and I have seen those hand warmers before, something that would be very useful on a winter camp. I have used a 'Look What We Found' as a snack before but cannot get away with any boil in the bag as a proper meal and on the (only) wildcamp I did this year with my mate, we had intended to cook steak and all the trimmings but a couple of hundred yards from where we parked was a great country pub so we ended up in there for food and had a boss burger and chips with a canny couple of pints too - no washing up either. I love Carols from Kings on Christmas Eve, really gets me in the Christmas mood! Amazing morning to wake up too, shame the bad weather is moving in, cheers Alan

    That's a lovely looking tent, I started off camping with the understanding that a two person tent was a must for wild camping. Over the past year I've been loving using one person tents. Lighter, smaller footprint and all the shelter that you need.

      Great to hear you enjoyed it. Will get the tent out in some more testing weather and see how it goes. They make some superb gloves. I bought an expensive pair of Montane Prism gloves and they fell apart after one camp, all the coating on the fingers rubbed off - so I invested in a decent pair which are very warm and put together very well; I'm sure they will last many many years and therefore pay for themselves due to not replacing them.

    Brilliant video yet again Chris. Cool looking tent and a beautiful pitch. How would u rate the Hestra mitts for warmth compared to a down mitt like the Montane antifreeze mitt. My next purchase is definitely a pair of mitts, for sitting in the tent. Ive also looked at the Hestra Windstopper pullover mitts to help with a bit dexterity. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. 👍

      Not tried any Montane mitts - the only montane gloves I've ever tried where prism - they fell apart on the first use out with Wardle and Ant - coating on fingers crumbled off. Hestra make some of the finest, most hard wearing gloves IMHO. These mitts are very, very warm.

    Great vid Chris. i spotted the Enigma quilt there too so looking forward to hearing your views on that. I have only used mine once and i was mega impressed with how quickly it lofts up and i used the EE Revolution Apex ( Synthetic over it) which worked a treat with just wearing a set of base layers. Ive fancied the Access 1 myself because i have the MSR Hubba NX and thats always been good in moderate to strongish winds and like the Access 1 its a great 1 man tent in terms of space. I haven't committed to buying one because i have got 2 Hilleberg 4 season tents and for the nastiest of weather i want to be able to pitch in one so thats that inner first element thats stopped me from buying but i am looking forward to seeing how well it copes in the thick of winter or more so in heavy winds. I guess when there is snow on the ground the fact that it doesn't go all the way to the ground will not be a big issue because the snow will fill that space once it's pegged out . Good luck with your next trials/ adventures with it ;)

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  8 місяців тому

      Yeah, cheers Olan. My mate had the Access 1 years ago and I wasn't sure about it. When I pegged out the footprint, I thought it was going to be very claustrophobic - but was genuinely pleasantly surprised as it's massive inside! The only other MSR tents I've tried are the Tindheim 2 - a beast - and the Elixir 2 which I was impressed with. These poles are top spec and made by Easton so in theory, should have some longevity about them. I think spindrift will easily accumulate in the porch, but will have to see. If I'm free when the next storm / snow hits, we will see what it can do. The quilt is ace, bought as a treat around my birthday - absolutely toasty yet compacts very small and light. Top quality. ATB pal

    Chris, followed MCM for years. I know you have an Arsenal of some pretty serious tents as do I, so you don't have to justify anything. My mate has a 2020 version of this tent and it isn't a 4 season tent. Its versatile, clever, light, quality construction from a very well respected manufacturer, and as you say condensation management is brilliant. When the rubber hits the road however, its a strong 3 season in the real world IMHO. Good review and gorgeous scenery. ATB pal.

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  8 місяців тому +1

      I think the fly sheet on the older model did extend all the way to the floor ? It would collect snow in the vestibule but the bathtub is very high. I was made up with the amount of room inside, only a small pack size and light too - poles are carbon 'easton syclone' on a hub system. Looking forward to seeing how it handles strong winds. It's definitely marketed as '4 season' like the Scarp ...... so let's see

    Just pausing on the flelxtail bit, Andrew Beavers said the exact same thing. Seems they've completely messed this one up. The one that's also a lamp looks ok but I wouldn't get one. Don't like the noise, the inflation bag works perfectly well, only takes a minute and will never need recharging. I like my gadgets but these pumps are completely unnecessary imo.

      Yes, this is the second one that's failed. Something up with the design. I've got the tiny pump which I think you're referring to, that's ace. Works well. Definitely unnecessary weight though. Pump sack does the job, weighs next to nothing.

      No worries, thank you for watching. Very disappointing re the pump. Needs a better look at QC I think. The pump sack does the job at the end of the day, but sometimes the convenience and speed of the elec pumps are great. Tent first impressions are superb.

    You should've used the inflation bag that comes with the mat, you can use it as a dry-bag inside your backpack..... There's too much "pressure", I think, on buying electrics for wild camping/hiking...... I fell into that trap at the beginning of my adventures. All I take now is a sat communicator, little radio, headlight & phone, that's it. I'm not attacking you Chris or being obnoxious for the sake of it, just my observations, but a lot of the kit you have & use is vastly over spec for the type of adventures that you go on....... I know it's great to have the latest, the best and if you can afford it then no problem whatsoever...... But a lot of people, especially over the last 24mths, see all of this and feel that they need the Fjallraven blah blah, or the Hestra chow chow because the CheaperChineseImport that they can afford isn't up to the job....... I know this because I've talked to them and was one of them.
    I know you are sent a lot of kit to review and I enjoy those reviews because you are totally impartial, a la the Flextail pump in this video, and again, that is great for a lot of people, being able to see reviews and decide whether to buy that thing or not, (just going back to that air pump, their other ones have a built-in light, this one doesn't so you'd need to bring a tent-light too, if you don't use your head torch as a tent-light.... bizarre) but a lot of video creators within this 'scene' are becoming more like shopping channels than outdoor adventure channels.
    As I said, not an attack on you, I love your channel and the content you provide and have been with you for a wee while. Just my observations...... that, at the end of the day, count for nowt! 🙂 ATB

      Thanks for watching mate. I've always tested and reviewed gear throughout my videos - totally consistent in that regard and I'll continue to so, as that's what I enjoy. Never said you need fancy stuff to go wild camping, which of course you don't. The basics are just fine and that's all I had for many many years.
      Fully aware that some of the things I have are 'overkill', but again - I take them because I want to and always pay the weight penalty.
      There's not much else to film unless you talk about the gear you're using to be fair. It forms a lot of the content.

      I'm a very basic camper, I take a lot of cheap and cheerful gear and alot of the time you pay the price. We all know the saying, you buy cheap you buy twice and that as certainly happened to me a few times.
      It's a personal choice to head out the door with a heavy pack, I too enjoy a comfortable camp with certain things you can do without, I go overkill on food, I take out a stove that's 10kg for a hot tent camp but it's not really cold, I just enjoy the comforts on a camp.
      I personally enjoy the hi-tech gear reviews that Chris does as I've never seen or heard of some of the stuff he brings out. There's plenty of times I've looked at the wife and said, there's a Christmas present for me if your struggling haha.
      Yeah it is tough times for a lot of people but I think it depends on the person watching it. If your that type of person who gets jealous easily I'd stay away from kit reviews like this if it doesn't bother you, enjoy it and just have a nice dream about opening a orange MSR tent 🙂

    • @MCMOutdoors
      @MCMOutdoors  8 місяців тому +2

      No worries mate - I say at the end of lots of my videos that you don't need to spend a lot on gear, just to get yourself out there is all that matters. I also think that's reflected in how I talk about my enjoyment of being outdoors, which I'm very passionate about.
      Unfortunately, it's difficult when making outdoor content to actually get new content, without talking about some gear and items you're sent - invariably if your channels become more successful, people send kit to test out; which as an outdoor gear junkie, is always nice.
      I started wild camping when I was 14, part time job and I bought the basics, mainly army surplus. It's only now around 27 years later that I can afford some more expensive items - as ever, none of these things are necessary, but if you can afford it and you enjoy something usually put together better, or can stand up to worse weather, then all good.
      I own lots of more 'budget friendly' items, but find myself using items which I feel are better quality and I make those decisions through my experience of testing, trying and using loads of different bits of kit over the years. Hestra make superb gloves, Hilleberg make superb tents - but they're expensive. Necessary, no - it's the age old thing isn't it. UK conditions can be pretty brutal, I put myself out there whenever I get free time (very limited now) which coincides with bad weather, as I enjoy camping in storms - so I think decent gear is needed for when these conditions occur or you're intentionally heading out to push yourself a bit.
      I never pressure anyone to purchase anything, I don't talk about affiliate links and actually can never be bothered to post or register to post affiliate links - I just enjoy trying new things and making different content.
      Hopefully catch you in the next video pal.
