I'm brazilian. Roots bloody roots talks about the indian genicide in the brazilian colonization. We're colonized by Portugal in 1500 and the natives was killed or enslaved. Now theres a lot of movements trying to rescue the indigenous culture.
Kind of like here in California where the mexican indigenous are slowly rising to regenerate their culture in the south.
Roots is also a conscious nod to Brazil's marginalized indigenous population and cultures. The song "Itsári" features a Xavante chant that re-appears on the song "Born Stubborn" and serves as a loose thematic thread for the whole album, which on the whole showcases the band's increased affinity for experimentation and collaboration. I remember reading in their album annotations about this. The deforestation of the land and one tribe the Guarani Indians have been killing themselves over this.
Yes, but it was not only poruguese who killed the indians, now they are destroying Amazonia and killing the natives.
Listen to Sepultura 96' Texas concert. There are some songs on YT...it's fucking amazing
Check out the recording footage on vimeo. They really enjoyed each other's. vimeo.com/52036943
this "korn feeling" is the Sepultura's influence on Korn musicals inspirations
Other way round korns album was 94, roots is heavily influenced by new metal and it came out in 96.

Absolutely. When they first hit my ears, I had a "Holy shit!" moment.

That moment your head explode and you go like: WTF is this? Heavy stuff!
I first heard them coming from a car radio beside me at a stop light in 1996. You are 100% right. have you listened to some of there(Soulfly) quarantine stuff?
@@thetrytro yes
From what I remember Max Cavalera telling me when I spoke to him in Hawaii back in 1994,
He said a lot of the songs were based off of experiences that he had as a child growing up in Belo Horizonte. It was about the massive corruption in the Brazilian government, and the violence towards the people of Brazil and that no one cares that children are dying in the streets and the elderly are being starving poisoned as well as the people who live in the rainforest... the indigenous people are being mistreated and slaughtered for the acres of land that they live on that they called her home and nothing is being said by the media anywhere in the world.
Ryan & George are gonna flip the script on us in about a yr or so & start their own Metal band. They are actually writing down the perfect recipe for Global Dominating metal by studying every ones comments & understanding what the perfect groove, singing & other sound technics make for a perfect raise your fists, stomp your boots song.
Mattison Leaf they need to start lesson noww
I would watch a second channel of them learning to play guitar and drums 100%
They would be hysterical! I also know they'd put everything they have into it.
Mattison Leaf lol the thought had crossed my mind. In one of their earlier metal reactions, dont remember if Megadeth or Metallica someone suggested they should be hired by bands during production to offer their take. It really is refreshing to hear a non fan of your musics honest, objective opinion
Still waiting for this band 🤔 @LostInVegas
I think that the reasons you're succesful at what you're doing and being loved by metal fans are that you are really open minded, have a great perspective for looking at things and have really good music ear. But I believe the main thing is that you give such reactions to such songs that we see ourselves when we were listening them for the first time. We listened so many metal songs for so many times that we forgot how we were affected at the beginning I guess, and you guys reminding those times to us by your great observations and reactions. Keep up the good work, I love you guys, and do more GOJIRA....
The groove and the vocals are exactly the reason why I'm obsessed with this song
Keep in mind Sepultura *_introduced_* tribal-drums style to metal; they defined the 'new' sub-genre.
The album Chaos A.D. demonstrates (imho) more what their message is as a band.
Debatable. They've said that Neurosis was part of that tribal-drum element of the music. I don't really have a source for that, I just remember them saying that at one point in an interview or something. Either way, Neurosis was also huge in that.
Yeah, Neurosis definitely had that going for them by the mid 90s. But Chaos AD introduced stuff that got taken up by a handful of bands, and then sepultura heard those records and got influenced by them. The whole groove metal thing got to be too much, of course. It's funny, I could never listen to soulfly, but I loved nailbomb
Sepultura always been tribal, listen the groove and fills in Necromancer and Crucifixion or even the chugg in Warriors of Death and Drums in the original in Troops of Doom, the double bass breaks groove in Screaming Shadows or the " rototoms ", thing in whole thing. Empire of The Damned doom and gloom stuff.
Also they were the first big Brazilian metal band to arise after the dictatorship ended in i think 1985 which i believe was an influence on this song. Giving hope to Brazilian metal fans who didnt have metal until that ended. And then as youve already been told, they used traditional Brazilian tribal instruments with help from an actual Brazilian tribe. Love Sepultura, amd you guys. Keep killin it big homies 🤘
Heheh, "Arise" I see what you did there.
Isso soa exatamente como uma ditadura.
To me, brazil was always one of the earliest adopters of extreme metal. Sadly as far as I'm concerned, when Sepultura started to "arise" they simultaneously started to "a-suck". I'm a huge fan of bestial devastation / morbid visions era sepultura, but that's where it ends. I mean, I understand what they were trying to do with this type of music, it just doesn't suit my taste. I don't like jumping up and down on the spot like a bunny. Plenty of other old brazilian classics to fall back on though.. Sarcofago, Holocausto, Expulser, MX, Vulcano, Mutilator and Mystifier etc..
Hey guys!
The whole Roots album was recorded to bring about the history and culture of our indigenous people, who are marginalized and killed and suffered a whole lot. This song in particular is just about believing in yourself and trusting your own native roots, and be proud of it, don't let them take it away from you, basically.
In my opinion, you guys should listen to something from their Chaos A.D. album, like Territory, Refuse/Resist and Nomad.
And as far as vocals go, Max is a "love it or hate it" type, pretty much.
Keep on with the great job! And again, try some Lamb of God and such
To be fair, I think the vocals just enough more accessible on Chaos A.D. that it might go over better. Roots is a bit much for me sometimes, but I can dig their earlier stuff.
Pretty much I greed much respect for the Native of the Americans.
"Yeah,that's nasty"

Accurate to how it feels to listen to Sepultura
Max Cavaliera has a great voice. He has one of the best growls.
"It's about believe in yourself, about be proud of your heritage, proud of where you come from. Really powerful but simple lyrics. So it's really about just be down with your own roots and believe in your roots." - Max Cavalera
Happy birthday, Ryan.
Seriously, I'm so glad I found this show. I love the presentation, the open mindedness, and the passion y'all present. I don't know if y'all are from the same background as me, but that's what I love about this show. It brings together people from all backgrounds to view as one. Shout out to all the free thinkers. People are people, we should have a good time and love one another. Celebrate our differences, they are what makes us beautiful. I love this album for that reason too.
Those lyrics and the "bloody roots" are refering to the widespread massacre of indigenous south americans that took place during the colonization proccesss. The Amazon rivers is almost 5 miles across and it must have turned red at the time, the numbers are ridiculous.
That massacre still goes on by the way. The food industry here is ridiculously large (if you look that up you'll find that Brazil exports the vast majority of all the crops and meat it produces) and it grows at an ever faster rate, to the point that it's endagering the Amazon and promoting indian massacres in order to clear more land for farming. We have more cattle than people, literally. And this industry actually runs the government so ecologists are powerless and have nothing to do but to keep on studying and trying to appeal to the world to force our government to do something about it.
We are watching the most precious sanctuary of life on Earth AND it's native inhabitants being massacred for centuries, and we're reaching the point of no return in those ecosystems, and believe me, the whole world will be struck with major natural catastrophe if the Amazon doesn't get the proper time to recover, 'cause if you look at the globe, all other regions in that latitude are deserts. It won't take much more to turn the Amazon into a desert.
The natives fight to preserve the little pieces of what's left of their homeland, so yeah, the roots of the jungle are bathing in blood for centuries now.
And that's the raw, ugly and powerful truth the vocalist is screaming at your face in this song, in a visceral way, to a point that you can't actually make out much from the lyrics but the feeling is very real to me.
I'm not indian btw, I'm a white ass motherfucker living in the southeast, here we got other ecosystems such as the "mata atlântica" and the "caatinga". There's not much left of them too, as you could probably guess.
Your videos are really inspiring and I had a great time, I've known all those rock and metal songs all my life and it was long since I enjoyed them properly like they deserve, it was awesome. Thanks a lot.
He is talking more about how the deforestation process of the amazon has displaced indigenous tribes, it is a recurring theme throughout the album. This point is strongly made in the last verse of the song:
I pray we don't need to change
Our ways to be saved
That all we want to be

Saw this band LIVE in SOUTH AFRICA!!! They played this track... it was brutally fun to be in the pit
As a drummer who has personally preformed the gambit from speed metal to hip hop both live and in the studio, I love how you guys can hear the groove of the beat and can hear how it would translate to hip hop via beat boxing. You just gave me a drummer chubby. Mad props to LIV.
About the thing you said about vocals, I think in heavy metal, vocals is like an instrument. That’s the reason heavy metal vocalists sound so harsh. Their voice is one of the instruments in the band. :) you guys rock! Love from Iran. ❤️🤘
Its using anger as an instrument as well as inspiration for lyrics. The right bands use more then just the growls and paint with a full palette of vocal expression.
instruments play notes, death and black vocals are atonal...so your point of view is wrong. original heavy metal has melodic vocals, sometimes more harsh but still melodic. the growling and screaming atonal vocals of extreme metal(mostly death and black) comes from the punk/hardcore influence those bands had
Sepultura was a major influence in Gojira's music. In fact they still cover songs from them in their shows.
This is one of the angriest, most uncompromising, heaviest and most forward thinking metal songs ever
Nonsense
Actually at that time Sepultura was massively compromising between their original sound and the Groove metal going on in the metal mainstream back in the 90's
If I am remembering it correctly, Sepultura recorded this with actual indigenous peoples in Brazil and used a lot of their primitive instruments as well. So, if you listen to the rest of the album, there will be times when you will hear landscapes and chants that are legit from the indigenous areas of Brazil. This is one of the most ground breaking metal albums to ever be made in my humble opinion.
The whole album has been written based in a mix of heavy metal and tribal drum beats. They recorded this song using, as an inspiration, beats from a tribe of indians called Xavantes. This tribe is located in North of Brazil. The song tries to pass the message we all have our origins and, in Brazil, the original/first habitants are the indians but the goverment do not treat them with deserved respect.
The first time I heard this album, it chewed me up, spat me out, and crushed my ball's.
And I loved every fuckin' second of it!
😆
You guys talked about the guitars on this song having the Korn sound. Both albums were produced by Ross Robinson.
Korn and Slipknot both love Sepultura
As the lead track for this album I had to have played this song at least 20 times in a row before continuing. That breakdown was so heavy and the drums just pounded the beat into your chest. Love the reaction guys!
Great choice, still think you should do Pantera - Domination '91 in Moscow. It'll blow your mind
Pawel Filipczak fuck yea man! Dime's headbanging
fuckyeah
vid to go with it is a must
I've been suggesting this for the past 15 rock/metal videos
That live footage is simply off the fucking hook
As far as I understand it, the band went out and recorded the album in the wilds with the native Brazilian indians. The song as far as I know is about preserving the native pre-christian cultural aspects of the country. The Portuguese slaughtered many and conquered the country and if I'm not mistaken, there is a sizable faction of the country that would like to see a return to the old ways. Again, I'm not totally sure but that was my understanding. Hopefully someone else in the comments can provide a better explanation/confirmation.
kahwigulum what's a native Brazilian Indian?
it is indigenous
One of the tracks they recorded with the Xavantes tribe in Brazil. Being in Brazil, metal was kind of a thing you didn't do, and they went with the whole going against the grain. There were, at the time, over 100 different tribes in Brazil, and some of them were openly hostile towards white people. The Xavantes tribe was not, and because of that, they were kind of outcasts themselves among the other tribes, just as Sepultura was among their own people in the established world of Brazil. The band met with the tribe and became friends with them, and recorded the track Itsari with the entire tribe.
I learned all this from Max Cavelera's book, My Bloody Roots, and I highly recommend it.
They recorded "Itsari' live which means roots with the Xavante tribe from Mato Grosso, brasil. The rest of the album was recorded in malibu with Ross Robinson from roadrunner records. They brought in brasilian musician Carlinhos Brown, for arrangements. This album is heavily influenced by Korn and Deftones music combined with the tribal sounds and Sepultura's sound created a unique sounding record for its time. teamrock.com/feature/2016-10-06/the-story-behind-sepulturas-roots
There's a video ua-cam.com/video/iBF1VmGAvgc/v-deo.html of them with the Xavantes tribe. Sadly, I don't understand Portuguese so I've no idea what they're saying.

I love Sepultura. Sepultura and Slayer are two favorites bands and I still listening all day long since my teenager's years in Brazil
The grooves ment to sound like a "berimbau" a brazilian one string instrument that is used in capoeira
That is right. Berimbau and all the percussion based on the African religion also.
I just wanted to say that you're pretty
I know the lyrics can be quite generic here, but sure they're talking about all the blood and violence related to slavery and slaughter of African and the indigenous people in Brazil, and people in general nowadays being ashamed of those peoples' cultural legacy. Cheers from Brazil!
Francine Barreto Same thing with other Latin American countries indigenous and Africans are oppressed .Telemundo is just a example.
Francine Barreto That being said Brazil is a hotbed for heavy music , so many good bands come for your country .
Yeah, I agree. Though very very similar, the colonization processes and culture formation ended up differently in Brazil. And Max himself said in a an interview the kind of metal they wanted to do was different in the beginning because they were ashamed of being Brazilians, it is a very common sentiment among us. He also said that once they embraced our culture and translated it to their songs Sepultura was finally recognized around the world.
It sure is! Check out Krisiun and Nervosa, if you are into more heavy/death/thrash stuff ;)
Francine and Greg... There's a brazilian band called Arandu Arakuaa.. they are awesome
I LOVE this sing. The music and the vocals. Vocals are perfect with this song.
The screaming is raw energy! Raw power! It's primal! Turn it up loud and sing along. You'll get it! It's not meant to be heard quietly. Most metal isn't. You should consider that when listening to other metal songs.
I seriously love your guys videos especially on metal and rock because you guys are unbiased and very open to it and get in depth about the lyrics and even the instrumentals. Me listening to metal all my life and seeing you guys review songs and you guys talk about it actually made me see some stuff in certain songs that I didn't see before. I also like how in your guys rap review videos you guys are very like professional like you guys know exactly what your talking about because you guys listen to rap.
I would LOVE to see these 3 songs in future reaction videos!!!!
UFO- Doctor Doctor
ZZ Top - Tush

Happy birthday Ryan! Love your honest reaction. People either love of hate this song. If you read the comments, Sepultura fans are begging for you to listen to another song as if your honest reaction is going to change, like you will be converted. Max's vocals are what they are.

I’m a hardcore Sepultura fan and I approve this message 👍🏻
Brazilian here, hope you guys like this legendary song!
I absolutely love your videos! The positivity and fun vibes are refreshing in this day and age.
Hey guys! Whats up?! Talking a little bit about this record, Cavalera brothers lived a month in a native tribe (like the one in the record cover). All the songs in this record talks about the injustice that Brazil people and government do with this people (who were here before the portuguese came and slay most of 'em). Hope it explains some about the lyrics and the songs (sorry about my english)! ;)
Exactly!...That's what I was gonna say...That cover, as scary and seemingly extracted like from a horror movie might be, is non other than a picture of the face of one of the exponent members of one the many native tribes living in the Brazilian Amazon basin...It's a real face, contrary to what some (yet most likely very familiar with seeing this album cover), may think...I had never been very much into hardcore metal (or dark metal, or whichever of the metal genres that have been talked about here, for that matter), but when I saw this album image the first time, I went like: "Oh shit, I wanna check on these guys...!"
By the way, as in Dayan's case, English is not my native language...
And, by the way again, you two guys have an awesome channel!... 😃👍
Keep it up!
Oh, and also interesting to notice that the face of that cover used to be in the Brazilian currency from awhile back. In the bill of 1000 Cruzeiros (from around 1990-1993): povo.blog.br/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/008-linda-cedula-c217-fe-mil-cruzeiros-3230-MLB4832119017_082013-F.jpg

Sepultura are important because they merge brazilian samba with metal in a non corny way, its funny you guys mentioned groove at 1:59 because Sepultura are usually named one of the most prominent sub genres of metal which is called groove metal. Great content as always guys ,if you get the chance please react to DEFTONES - DIGITAL BATH
Deftones/Maynard {Passenger} would blow their minds apart. White Pony is just a great classic album. [Digital Bath] would be great for them to break down though IMO.
Yes, all this time I've been wishing for them to do Deftones. Digital Bath is a great suggestion. I'd also suggest Knife Prty.

Yes!! I knew i would see that song name if I kept scrolling. I would love to see these guys react to Ghost of Perdition! One of the greatest songs ever written.
daren79 Opeth are just the best, without a doubt my favourite band, so many masterpieces to choose from, it’s impossible to just choose one
LaSucube666 I don’t listen to Opeth or metal in general for ‘catchy’. I listen to Opeth for their atmosphere and melody. They’re the perfect combination of brutal and beautiful, and their riffs are awesome, Deliverance, Master’s Apprentices and Serenity Painted Death are killer, awesome riffs in those songs 👌🏻
To hear Ryan and George wish for better vocals--but pass up Opeth!!! So sad, Twitter polling has failed the metal community. I need to hear them review Opeth "Ghost of Perdition"
To start I'd go for "When"... it's quite a piece....
Domination live at Moscow - Pantera. You definitely won't be disappointed.

The title "Roots Bloody Roots" is related to the genocide commited against the indian population in Brazil's colonization. When they talk about going back to the roots I think they mean that we should forget about "imported" cultures and pay more attention to the ancient culture that already existed in Brazil before it's colonization. I believe it is very similar to the rescue movement of the indigenous culture in the USA. Very nice reaction, guys! I loved to hear your comments about one of Brazil's greatest bands. Greetings from Brazil! Cheers!
A few thoughts here.
1. The difficulty in understanding the concept of the record and the meaning of the lyrics proves how, despite being a globally acclaimed album, sung entirely in English, "Roots" is still mostly targeted at Brazilian audiences. When it came out here, it meant a lot not only because it was the creative coming of age of a great band, but because it was unthinkable for a local metal band to acknowledge Native Brazilian or African Brazilian culture. In fact, most metal bands in Brazil were founded precisely under the principle of DENYING what is usually seen as "Brazilian culture". It took one of the most popular bands in the world (which Sepultura was at that point) to be bold enough to take that step. In "Roots", Sepultura not only went into a Xavante Indian reservation to record (something they were tapping into since their former album, "Chaos AD"), but also wrote songs with Carlinhos Brown, a mainstream black artist that represented the opposite of what the largely white, middle class metal culture was about. They faced strong criticism for that, but the record was so good that it certainly changed a lot of minds - it was our The Clash meets the Furious Five moment, something that still resonates more 20 years later. One can imagine how big of a challenge would be to put that into words for foreign audiences. Still, it's debatable whether Max Cavalera could or could not have made a bigger effort in that direction, since they already had global reach.
2. Sepultura was a highly influential band and were at their peak when Max Cavalera abruptly left in 1997. Musically, they evolved from a thrash/death style to grind and then to something genuinely original. "Roots", to my understanding, is the founding piece of nu-metal, for good and for bad. Max's singing style is not only a development inside of that stream os music, but it's also an embodiment of that change. It's extreme to the point of not alienating core audiences, but it's also a nod to a groovier, more mellow style that would inform acts like Korn and Limp Bizkit. I understand that it may sound odd and annoying to untrained ears, but bear in mind that it belongs to a school that had been in development for almost 30 years by then. So it makes total sense to heavy metal fans. But the most remarkable is that, even sounding very aggressive, it broke ground both in Brazil and abroad, and it played a central role in the mainstream metal revival of the post-grunge era.
That said, I love your reacts and reviews. Very original and insightful, it makes me feel like I'm listening to all that stuff again. Keep up the great work.
nothing to add to the comment above. Roots a breakthrough in metal history and shaked Brazil and the world at the time.

Love you guys! You introduce me to new music that is above the line. The screaming is an acquired appreciation, that I appreciate more and more. It started, for me, with Cradle of Filth.
Happy you guys played that last breakdown twice - this song is SICK - if you watch the official video it explains more, they're getting back to their roots, where it all began, their faith, their strength - thanks for doing this song.
Sounds like Ryan's been recording his own death metal vocals.
Opeth - A Leper Affinity for some poetic lyrics and even more majestic instrumentals. Has a very epic feel
Huge fan of Sepultura, pre-Roots. Never “got” this album. This launched their and subsequently Max’s solo tribal metal tangent, which I’ve just never been into. I feel like introducing them to Sepultura through Roots was a huge missed opportunity.
How about starting them off with a song from one of the following amazing albums? Something like:
- Beneath the Remains - Inner Self or Mass Hypnosis
- Arise - Altered State, Desperate Cry, or Dead Embryonic Cells
- Chaos AD - Territory, Slave New World, or Propaganda
I’d stack those 3 albums, and even throw in Schizophrenia as necessary, up against the best 3/4 releases of any other metal band. Period. Big 4 included.
\m/
Thanks for putting out your videos
I'm not sure how Dead Embryonic Cells lost to this song. Dead Embryonic Cells is well composed.
Dead embryonic cells
I'd say Desperate Cry is even more so.
One of my favorite bands. To me they have a very primal sound, the drumming the vocal style being Brazilian just has a an awesome package that's raw and aggressive.
Man you guys keep hydrated, thumbs up :-D
The vocals are meant to be percussive. Stop thinking of it as singing and instead as a percussive instrument it starts to make sense.
That had to be the most pretentious comment I’ve read in a while. “Stop thinking of singing as singing! It’s supposed to sound like shit!”
Nolan Moore I love Sepultura, but you’re right that’s an awfully pretentious comment lol.
Singing has always been an instrument. It adds a new layer of frequencies and sounds that compliment the rest of the music just like any other instrument does, just that you can put words in it. I'm rather pretentious right now aswell but I am a musician so I'm allowed to be. xD
Taking out the screaming in a song like this would be like taking out all the sampling and electronics in hip hop and replacing them with instruments.
For me not a good song
Death - Flesh And The Power It Holds
I think you guys would definitely enjoy Opeth. Ghost of perdition, The Leper Affinity, or Baying of the hounds.
Hex Omega!
I want them to do Opeth so badly... and there are so many different Opeth songs that have such a different sound they have a huge discography to choose from.
The Ward- Opeth is a very groovy song they recently came out with that's probably one of my favorites.
I went to sepultura, type o negative, and ozzy tour back in the day. Sepultura blew my mind they freaking rock!
You guys are awesome. Great discussions and thoughts keep it up

You should absolutely do an Opeth song. Clean vocals with growly vocals as well as clean guitar, acoustic guitars and heavy guitars, very talented band with a lot of different sounds in their songs. I would suggest Demon of the Fall, The Drapery Falls or Deliverence
I've been a metal fan for most of my life. Enjoy your guys' reactions! Keep up the good, open minded work! You guys should do Soulfly! Bleed, Bumba, Tribe or Back to the Primitive
Sepultura is in my top three thrash metal bands! Hell! They are number 1!
OPETH BLEAK.
You guys should definately listen to a song from Opeth. They do a great job of mixing harsh vocals with cleaner, more melodic ones. The best song to do a reaction video to would be BLEAK from their best album BLACKWATER PARK.
Pantera - Domination (Moscow)! If you want softer vocals with a heavy sound, go back to Killswitch Engage (Howard on vocals) and check them out again. Or Deftones.
I cant express with words how much I love these guys!
It's like re-living the first time I heard these songs
Awesome !
Huge fan ... watched them when the came to South Africa some time ago
Concert was a riot
My brother toured with the band doing the sound and lighting
Superb!
ratamahatta is a very cool song on the same album, very tribal
Houston Piercy LOVE IT!!!
Oh yeah, I feel the jungle.
Ratamahatta is so dope!
IM BROKEN PANTERA
Fear Factory - Zero Signal
Fury SevenOneThree yes, they need Fear Factory in their lives
Yes Fear Factory! Screaming to melodic singing. But play anything from Obsolete.
Any song from Fear Factory is good. Their cover of Cars, from Gary Numan, was spot on.
Holy shit...one of my all-time favorites...I actually requested they review Demanufacture but, shit, Zero Signal is apart of my life spirit
@@Rachniax love Fear Factory but not a fan of their cover of Cars. I was hoping that they would do it with more of a Fear Factory flavor to it....kind of how Type O would make covers sound like they wrote it.
Thanks for had celebrated Ryan's birthday with The greatest Metal Band from my Country, greetings from Pernambuco, Brazil...
I am Brazilian and I can tell you that one of the unique things we got down here, musically speaking, is that as we got a lot of African influence in our music, that somehow extended into (believe it or not) heavy metal... Ps: In my opinion, bloody roots refers to what happened down here not only in terms of the wiping out of the native Indians but also the horrors of the slave trade. PS: A fellow Brazilian just reminded me - in the comments below - that the members of Sepultura, when of the recording of the "Bloody Roots" album - went into a native Indian reservation and recorded some of their rhythms, which they then included in the compositions of the album.
Oh the irony of listening to Sepultura over Opeth and then stating that there could be a different take on the vocals lol
Seriously though, listen to "Opeth - The Ghost of Perdition" for a contrast between the growls and clean vocals. Mikael Åkerfeldt is a musical genius and an amazing vocalist who has been involved in music from rock to death metal and has left his definitive mark on every subgenre
The beginning of Ghost of Perdition will surely be a shock to them, haha.
But you're totally right, Opeth hit a really sweet spot with their usage of growls and clean vocals :)
Santa Clause It will be fun times haha
They just have to do Opeth. Especially this song. The band shows you how and why to use growls and how to contrast them with clean vocals. Songs like Ghost of Perdition make you understand what purpose growling vocals can have in the spirit of a complex song and that the use of them isn't just random. The mix of heavy and clean vocals fit the musical journey that you go through perfectly. They have to do this or a similar Opeth song. There is so much to appreciate.
look, I love that song and opeth in general but they're not gonna like that one at all. did you see their reaction to dream theater? opeth is way better but these guys aren't prog-metal guys, they're gonna get weirded out and bored by most of opeth until they really spend time getting into the music that surrounds them to understand just how good they are.
This!!!!!
Pantera - Cemetery gates, you have a dude with an amazing voice playing with the "growling" and "screaming". Just an iconic song. Surprised that you didnt react to it already tbh. And if you gonna, do it with the live version.
happy birthday ryan hope u had a good one mate from Ajax. Australia
Happy Birthday Ryan! 🎈🎁
Happy Birthday my dude. You want melodic vocals? Stargazer by Rainbow.
Love sepultura owned that album for years still sounds great to me , Peace!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAN!!!!!!!
Happy birthday, Ryan!
A couple of things:
Roots is kind of a lite concept record, covering themes like colonialism, harm to indigenous peoples, Roman Catholic tyranny, the rise of the Brazilian peoples, etc, etc. Roots, Bloody Roots falls into that concept, particularly in the sense of a call to action. The thing to keep in mind, though, is that English is that dude's second or third language. Lyrically, the song makes better sense in the context of the rest of the record than it does on its own. I feel like something gets muddled in the translation.
About the screaming - it does work in certain contexts. It seems to work best when the vocalist is genuinely angry about something, kinda like Tupac's shouting at the end of Hit 'em Up. Dirt in the voice can really drive a point home.
For me, the guttural, growling type of vocals are more about theater than anything else, especially when the lyrics are of more of a dark, occult/demonic or death-type theme. Adds more of a horror movie element. Evil from the dawn of evil kind of a thing. In some cases asking why a person likes the growling/guttural vocal style is similar to asking why his or her favorite movie is The Exorcist.
Also, it's another texture. A lot if the less melodic metal out there is a study in textures. Melodic vocals won't necessarily work as well over less melodic music. Rougher vocal textures are sometimes more congruous with what's going on instrumentally.
Of course, that's not to say you can't have heavy shit with pretty vocals.
Great video guys! Sepultura was one of the first bands that I listened to when I got into metal back in 8th grade, about 8 years ago. My initial reaction to the vocals was pretty similar to y'alls. They're definitely an acquired taste. As to the lyrics, I'm pretty sure they're talking about the indigenous people being enslaved and oppressed. The album cover does depict an indigenous person after all.
Also, please check out Punk It Up or Violent & Funky by Infectious Grooves
Happy Birthday man
A local radio station in Grand Rapids played most of this album on air before it came out. I had goosebumps throughout. This album is heavy and classic and important.
Happy birthday. Glad you are feeling better. Keep up the great videos.
If you're looking for a more colorful vocal palette, definitely check out Opeth. Not only does Mikael Akerfeldt growl/grunt/scream in key, he sings better than most people in metal. "Deliverance" is a long song, but well worth it.
Happy birthday, Ryan.
I just bacame a fan of the videos! Awsome!
Sepultura’s “Sepulnation” is absolutely amazing...would love to see your reaction to it
Different lead singer on that track btw
