What I love about Andrew scheps is That he goes for the result. doesn't care so much for the technicalities. So if hitting the signal with a limiter by -20db makes the sound pop, who cares
Andrew Scheps, love that he shares his thought process of why he's doing what he does. And it always makes perfect sense. The Pultec on the mix bus with boosts at 100hz and 10k makes perfect sense. If you've been mixing for any length of time, you would get how much sense this makes.. Awesome video!!! Alway love Andrew Scheps mixing vids.🙂👍👍👍
I did the room tracks blend in the parts that warranted it on my first ever engineering project in my home studio not even knowing if it was a normal technique (im only 2.5 years into the engineering game) but it seriously makss a world of difference for the right scenario(s)!

UAD Neve 33609 Stereo Compressor doing 100 recovery doing about 4b of reduction at a 1.5:1 ratio, A UAD Fairchild doing no compression, just coloration, and finally the UAD_bx digitial v2 adding stereo width, and a high shelf boost and a bass shift of 0.7 on both sides and middle.
Yeah I remember those Lang, EQ's. Back in 1973. When I worked for Flight Three Recordings Inc., in Baltimore. Original home of George Massenburg. We both started at the same place a couple years apart. We were both mentored by the same guy. A genius electrical engineer formerly with Bell Laboratories. And the father of Vertical Hold for television. Not in any history books. Thomas M. Bray. And I still have his custom, 4 input, vacuum tube, stereo microphone mixer. That doesn't sound like other tube stuff. It has a beautiful stark open quality to it. Way more open sounding than my pair of Altec Lansing 1567 A's. Which sound dark in comparison. Even though they both have the same, TELEFUNKEN tubes in them. But sound way different. So, those Lang EQ's. Were, a lot like a, PULTEC. But transistorized and much cooler operating. They were clean and robust. And they were smooth sounding. And I haven't touched one since 1973. Much less seen one since? But here they are! I remember those! I'm missing my old life.. I didn't want to retire. I was forced into retirement. This sucks! I love you Andrew! RemyRAD
How is Andrew Schepps hitting the red lights if the whole thing is supposed to be -6db to be mastered? I have this problem very often, the mix sounds great but it's hitting above -6 and I end up destroying my mixes trying to rebalance stuff to make my mix hit below -6.
as long as you dont hit the limiter/clipper on your master you can throw any gain plugin and just lower the gain to a lever you a comfortable with and keep mixing, further adjusting the gain to the level you need. just think about it that way and dont restrict yourself with these "rules"
The math in modern daw has 64 bit floating point operations. With real numbers. You can safely exceed the 0 level by at least 100 dB and then lower it back and it will not be clipped. There will be clipping only when converting to 16 or 24 bit integer format. Simply lower the loud mix in the final to a level not exceeding 0db. And there is no need to move its individual tracks separately. Of course check your daw against this.
Probably with it on... Otherwise he's clipping hard lol, but maybe he sends it lowered to the mastering engineer. Depends on what he expects out of the mastering (I would say he sends it as finished as possible, ie with the hard limiting)
Serious question..... How do you still hear such detail when you have the equivalent of curtains over your ears? Does cousin IT have his own Abbey Road treated room? Lol :-p
How does he manage to lengthen the kick and snare with those limiter settings? Wouldn't you normally have a slower release rather than a very quick one to achieve that?
daveezraloops if you have a fast attack the limiter grabs the transients and flattens it, giving the impression of the transient being longer, whereas in slow attack the transient stays untouched
Slower release would mean you keep compressing after the signal has dropped below the threshold, thus reducing the tail/length of the kick and snare. A faster release setting means you compress the peak but let the tail through, which preserves the low end bloom after the hit, thus lengthening the drums. I use a similar approach on my kick bus (-5dB reduction, 25ms ish attack, 50 to 60ms release and wet/dry mix at 50%, really lengthens the sound while also tightening the attack). I'm by no means an expert, maybe someone from mix the masters can complete/correct my answer!
Thanks for the replies! Raoul Tchoï: yes, that makes sense. I can hear the extra sustain when Andrew engages the limiter, it just seemed counterintuitive to me. I'll spend more time experimenting. Best Wishes
Whenever I see a video about compression I can't hear any difference when bypassing. I guess these are the pro videos.. But, Whenever I use and setup a compression I can hear a huge difference 😁 I think that's what noobies do.
Not to be rude here but guys when we talk about mixing can we point out exactly what genre we mixing for....Most of the time its rock...So if we say C.L.A is the an excellent engineer we meant in Rock Genre not in Reggea for exmble
Plugins are not equalizers, or compressors, or reverb, etc. they are all software that re-write "ceros and ones" because, in the box (computer) all is digital, just "0 and 1", so what the plugin that you think is compressing the signal is actually re-writing the file, that consist only in a large succession of ceros and ones.
@@user-qj2cq4dv3k When they came out in the 90s they were designed to "sound" like hardware because the engineers were used to the way they work, but today young generation have never work with real LA2As or SSLs so that emulation have no use to them, that is why companies like Izotope are coming with these new intelligent plugins and in the coming years this is going to change the game completely.

I love Andrew Scheps. He’s so down to earth and straight forward with his explanations. The red light thing made me laugh
It was funny 🤣
Andrew Scheps ... the Bob Ross of audio art.
No mistakes, just happy little accidents

How cool is it that he’s sharing his expertize and though process behind his work. I would say very.

lots of respect for Andrew and his approach. Met him in Melbourne a short while back, super nice human being.
Impossible not to learn when watching schepps do anything
I know, he's such a natural teacher
Andrew the type of mixer to master the track in parallel with the original
Xd

I really like this guy. He could be all mystical and cryptic because his name is renowned, but he is just humble and chill.
A good lord of the rings wizard
andrew, the hi freq bump in the pultec is there to compensate the filtering created by your hair before the ear?? thank you!
HAHA
Why do producers slap the space bar so hard?
Lmfaoo
For ultra-max hi-res transient energy
If you hit it hard you get some saturation which sounds good.
Its a beta thing :P
That's actually a 'Producer's Transport' which has an extra heavy duty space bar
We need a "Sheps Final Smoosh" by Waves xD
Isn't that Parallel Particles?
I love the way Andrew think. It’s so logical. I was wondering. What about the headroom for Mastering engineer ? The mix is already close to 0dB
the way he explains stuff is just gold
This man is a wizard!
Sad... happy!
I have met this guy a couple of times, he was involved with a studio that belongs to a friend...
The wizard king strikes again, thank you for the video!
Antelop Audio just did a lang PEQ2 like a couple months ago...
Thanks Andrew fora couple great tips!

Anyone know the first 3 plugins on the ‘router’ track in the beginning of the video?

I may have missed it but does he mix into that chain, or apply after?
great as always
"Happy"... "Sad"... Really made my day! 😂
thanks I really enjoyed this!
When he said kik in and kik out, does that mean the kik out is the in reverse? Cuz that’s what I could perceived by eyes
It means they miced the kick drum with 2 mics, one outside and one inside the body of the drum.

Anybody know what song he's working on? I guess I missed it
thank you so much.
I'm not clear on what he does to thicken the drums. He said he uses a dirty EQ? How and at what stage is it applied?
Hi pass into lo fi for some dirt into izotope trash for a lot more dirt into an eq that is cutting a lot of the midrange
But can I do it with Scheps Omni Channel?
is there a part 1 to this?
What song/artist is this?
What a guy. *applause*
I like the hardware its color. But I overall love the color and "randomness" of tube's.
Literally could listen to this guy talk about mixing for ev er
the inflator is not the same as the enhance circuit. they do the opposite thing. inflator: harmonics / enhance: dynamics
