This Classic song was a monster hit in 1951 . I was 5 y/o, & my memory isn't very clear, but I do recall that my Mom loved this song & she'd sing along whenever it came on the radio. RIP, Les Paul & Mary Ford. ---------MJL, 77 y/o Now.

As a kid in the 50s, LP&MF might be heard on the early rock 'n' roll station, or on the university station's night jazz show. I guess programmers were confused!

We pretty much took it for granted. We just turned on the radio and there it was. I used to fall asleep at night listening to the live broadcasts of dixieland music coming from Club Hangover (yeah, there really was such a place) in San Francisco, "on Bush above Powell" as the announcer said. Years later, driving on Bush St., I saw the sign, "Bring back the nooner, take a hooker to lunch". But haven't wanted to visit San Francisco in the last 30 years.

It wasn't just Les Paul's electronics ability or his guitar playing ability or Mary's singing and playing or the multiple recording that made them so popular. Les Paul's arrangements were exceptionally good. Many groups and many individuals recorded the same songs but Les Paul's arrangements really caught the listener's ears in a pleasant way.

Good observation. Yes, those were Pop standards of the days, but Paul's arrangements had soooo much zest (I was inspired to put down my baton, close the cover of my Steinway, and take up sir guitar)!
Barry Gordy said best, "...it's what's in the groove that counts". That jump rhythm comes to you from soooo many directions, but it moves you. Period.

    • @nemo227
      @nemo227 2 роки тому +1

@@nealbradleigh5069 If you enjoy music, enjoy playing, enjoy arranging, any of that . . . that is success. That's the purpose of music. Don't put your baton down for good because there may be another person who will benefit by your direction, your counseling, your encouragement, or maybe just knowing someone is listening. Your influence is invisible; you can never know who it touches.

@@cryptonewbie2041 I believe it is self evident that the comment is in regards to their history of performing together. And does not diminish Les Paul's individual technological and innovative accomplishments which stand on their own. Take your own advise, because it is yourself that needs to learn more on history. My comment factually reflects what Les Paul said himself in countless interviews about his performances and collaborations with her. And most people from that time who grew up listening to their music instantly mention Mary Ford when you say Les Paul's name. And instantly mention Les Paul's names when you say Mary Ford's name. Les Paul repeatedly mentioned her and credited her for their commercial success. Your comment makes no sense, and doesn't have any relevance in fact. Les Paul was a dynamic pioneer that influenced generations. I think that goes without saying. I'm sure we can agree on that.

This clip is from a special titled "The Record Years",aired c.1959. Yes,Hortense THAT is Dick Clark in one of his rare 1950's NON AB/Beechnut appearances. The show was a recap of 1950's pop music. While Polsfuss and Summers[HUH?] may well have trekked up to 46th and Market[DUH?],they likely did it during the Bob Horn reign of terror on Channel 6, as Clark wasn't airing "Pop Tunes" on AB and "America's Musical Sweethearts" were not multitracking any R&R,which probably suited each side just fine. And, as we know all to well, NO pre network Horn or Clark Bandstand footage has ever surfaced.

This was their Jan. 1951 recording played back. Yes, they were lip-synching. She looks a lot older here so this may have been perhaps in 1961 or 62. She had been drinking a lot due to their loss of hit songs when Rock & Roll took over in '56. Mary even left Les briefly during that period. They were already having marital difficulties and finally split up for good, divorcing in 1964.

Mary Ford is the most underrated singer of all time. Mary played the guitar just well as Les. If it was Not for Mary Les would be a complete unknown now. Mary Ford should have gone down in history as the greatest singer of all time. So very sad all Mary Ford as ever had was a life of playing second fiddle to Les Paul. She never got the respect that she deserves. People bought Les Paul and Mary Ford records to hear Mary's beautiful voice singing. Les Paul would never have the money to develop the electric guitar and multitrack recording if were not for Mary, which will be several million dollars in today's money. it's high time Mary gets the respect that she deserves.

basically, Les Paul invented multi-track recording. Before the 1940s you could only record with 1-track tape, and people got mad because it was fAke aND eLecTriC rEeEE- (But recording with tape was electric anyway???) people had to realise that this was a new era of musical recording which changed the world. Mary Ford was lucky to be the first to record this way.

I read somewhere that after their divorce, Les seriously considered recruiting Patti Page to be his new partner, and Mary made a few albums where she sang AND copied Les' style of guitar playing.

Les Paul played at the Capitol Theater in Racine at age 14. The city is days away form destroying the theater. Help save! We can have a Les Paul Fest there when it's restored.

Les Paul was a genius...!! I remember an interview with Keith
Richards....who said the same thing. Les Paul invented almost all of the
effects still used today in a studio
today...delay...reverb....distortion....echo...multitrack......the list goes on and on...!!...Genius...!!

If this is from American Bandstand, it's from 1964, or if it is not, it's a pretty rare fragment. As far as I know, all American Bandstand material before 1964 is lost. The only pre 1964 Dick Clark material that was kept, is from The Beechnut Show. The Les Paul and Mary Ford fragment however, doesn't look like it's from The Beechnut Show.

Couldn't have been from 1964. He and Mary split in 1963. Divorce became final in 1964. I last saw them perform live at Rye Beach Playland , Bronx N.Y. in Sept or Oct. 1962.

When the sixties hit, all this and much more was flushed down the toilet by the media, and I don't know why. Even before the Beach Boys or the Beatles. Was it at some point classified as rock and banned along with rock from 1959 till 1963?

Hardly anyone ever mentions Les' talent when it came to arranging a song like How High the Moon. Every chorus was unique and perfectly crafted. I was not a fan of his speeded-up sound. A man as talented as he need not resort to electronic trickery no matter how innovative it was.
Les' 2 albums with Chet Atkins are classics.
