I'm pretty excited to this show since comes from Dark creators, i expect a interesting script and the reason for the nightmare in the ship must be something cool like the time travel being the reason for the missings in Dark.
I like how it’s coming out in 2022, cause the numbers at the end of 1899 are together and if u add 1+8 u get 9 so it’s like everything is connecting, just like 2022 Just like dark.
We are not at all giving enough thought to the very very strange fact that there is a heavy emphasis on "the volume" here. This is a show supposedly simply about a ship or two at sea. Why on earth do they need a state of the art piece of technology most often used to simulate natural landscapes or interiors that are too costly to build in real life? Why on earth is almost every last test shot of stand ins on location outdoors? Surely these 19th century ships aren't equipped with forests and mountains.

The Titanic! That was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that trailer. When you see a steam ocean liner with those huge chimneys, sinking or stopped at sea, the iconic and traumatic imagery of the Titanic tragedy is kind of always there. Then I searched and found out that the Titanic sank in 1912 so 13 years after the nightmarish events of this show, so perhaps they will twist and change history (similarly to that awesome 1st season of the AMC show The Terror released in 2019) and make the cause of the Titanic sinking not because of hitting an iceberg that breached the hull but perhaps encountering and hitting the ship of the show 1899 which itself hit and encountered another ship. So here is my theory, putting aside the Titanic final twist at the end, the ship and its passengers we follow (let's call it ship A) smashes unexpectedly into ship B during a storm, damaging parts of ship A, stopping them from resuming their journey and forcing them to go into ship B after their water supplies run out. As they explore ship B, the passengers of ship A discover a decimated ship B with corpses everywhere, nobody survived whatever happened. They come across the main cistern for drinking water on the ship and all finally drink some water after a few days of thirst. As they gather water and head back to their own ship they come across the captain's log or a notebook of some kind describing observations about specific passengers behaving oddly/strangely or private/secret conversations he heard mistakenly through the pipe systems of the ship while working and that unsettled him. His fear concerns in particular non English-speaking/ non European-looking passengers. Eerily it matches with passengers of ship A's profiles and ends with: THE WATER IS SPIKED ! THEY DID IT ! A SINGLE DROP WAS ENOUGH ! WHAT AM I SEEING? WHAT IS REAL? The passengers then head back to their own ship with the water before ship B sinks suddenly and unexpectedly. The show then delves into a truly existential and very human nightmare where paranoia/suspicion/xenophobia/racism/abuse/violence spread amongst the passengers who, now that their memories, minds and perceptions of reality are PERHAPS altered by the spiked water, can´t remember how this could have happened, if they even contributed to those passengers´(and now perhaps their own) deaths at all, if they somehow contributed to the creation of the substance and brought it unto the ship before spiking the water supplies, if the substance is even real and if it works at all, what is the substance exactly, if the horrifying visions/ flash-backs of the past and hallucinations that they have are even real or the product of the substance, if this is not just a phenomena of mass hysteria sparked by the captain´s log own paranoia and xenophobia. What is real? Could all this madness have just been started by a drop of water, mentally and/or physically and/or metaphorically? Is humanity so frail and self-destructive as to crumble and turn on itself at the slightest doubt or fear of each other, over and over, time after time, ship after ship? WHAT IS REAL?
Is this a story about the crew who was on the ship got lost and eat each other because they ran out of supply of food and at last there were two men's left who were friends and decided they will not kill and eat each other so they both decided to eat their own body parts

Dark is probably my favourite series of all time, really intrigued what they bring with 1899 especially if they are delving into Horror. Can't wait.
