Just spent like 15 minutes trying to show my buddy how their music is actually in 4 and he just couldn’t grasp it. I mean if I wanted to learn it… yeah wouldn’t be counting to 4. But it still works, just listen to Thomas’ hands!
Because the years of decay is an awesome album. I respect your pics though. Elimination is a great song but to me its not the best on the album by far. @@1848revolt
I'm not gonna say you're wrong overall, but specifically The Years of Decay is one of the loosest thrash albums I've ever heard. There are several moments throughout where they're not all quite on the same tempo, as well as lots of hits that don't quite land all at the same time. It was quite obviously recorded without a metronome, and it's a great record, but tight is not a word I would use to describe it.
@@Jax-182 Tbh I don’t listen to it as much as some of my other favourite Rush albums but my favourite song off the first album would probably be Working Man or What You’re Doing
Glad you included Rodney in the footage. That video was how I both discovered him and Overkill. Clank is exactly what I go for, but I play with fingers and not a pick so low action and a good strike towards the fretboard is a requirement.
DD is one of my favorites, made me want to play with a pick more than any player out there. Ironbound is a perfect blend of low end and his signature clank.
I had the privilege of working with DD when I was a lighting director. He is also an extremely accomplished music Manager. He multitasked the entire day and he was there earlier than I got there and didn't walk out to the bus until everything was finished for the night
Man this video made my day! DD Verni has got to be my favorite bassist. His tones are amazing and to think he solely has been writing the band's music since '94. 13 ALBUMS later!!
D.D. Verni is great for that aggressive, in-your-face bass tone, but I think Dan Lilker and even David Ellefson also had that clangy metal bass tone going strong in their own rights
Alex Perialas might have something to say about that as well. He worked with Overkill,Anthrax and Testament around the same time and their bassists all had a bit of Klank going on.
I think the bass tone that Eddie Kramer got on Anthrax Among The Living influenced a bunch of these other guys to strive for that tone. Dan Lilker from S.O.D also deserves a nod on this .
DD Verni is a goat. Sometimes he uses a p bass too. Also, compressors are great for clank if you put em before an overdrive and crank the gain. That McG guy you referenced will often run two compressors like that. One before and one after
@@sebastian6121 I agree that John Entwistle is probably the first with that tone, though, personally, I'm much more of a Frank Bello fan than Entwistle. I do dig some Pinnick, though. Absolutely love the Dogman album.
Check out the very unknown and underground band Excruciation from Switzerland. They had this bass tone before anyone else as far as i remember in 86 or 87? Gotta check it out to see for sure......
But I’ve got a nickel that says you will! Head first! Spectacular song choice from a wealth of options in their back catalog. Always glad to see overkill getting a shout out.
Overkill wouldn’t be Overkill without DD’s bass playing. I saw them in early March 2020, right before they shut the world down. Between the killer bass lines and Bobby Blitz’s vocals. It was an amazing show
I’m a big OverKill fan & as a bassist D.D. Verni is in my top 5 favourite bassists. Thrash legends for sure Overkill is. Lead singer Bobby Blitz is the man & i love how Bobby Blitz says we love showing the younger generation of metal bands how it’s done on stage 🤘
Perfect match! That sound though you can hear on punk records in the late 70s. On overkill records though because of the way they mix it the bass pops right out and is easy to hear. Too many metal bands push the bass back in the mix.
Overkill years of decay is one of the best albums ever. I love his tone on playing with spiders/skullkrusher, his bass tone during the solos in C standard is nasty
This is the closest your tone match has ever sounded! Nice!
I've seen Overkill 7 times. It was still missing something imo. But close!
His tone match for Peter Steele was also insanely close
I like the clanky man it's jammin
Steel pick
I agree. I was thinking the same thing.
day 205 of asking for meshuggah’s bass tone
I hope he does the violent sleep of reason album's tone

Overkill one of the best thrash metal bands ever!!
The only thrash band I really like. I just don't like the genre that much.
Rat Skates gave my dad drum lessons back in the 80s
What’s your favorite Overkill album?
@@superheavydeathmetal horrorscope and I hear black. Most people will say the one with elimination.

Clanky has always been the standard for metal bass. If you want to cut through heavy guitars, this is the way to do it
Yeah man even Tool had a clanky bass back in Undertow
Amen
That is a hell of a bass tone man.
Years Of Decay. Nothing To Die For. Killer intro. DD Verne. Amazing player.
That song was "Head First"
Years of decay is an amazing album
Killer basslines!
Yeah bro….killer album, I’m 50 and still listening to old 80’s thrash….occasionally
*Verni 😊
DD Verni is a fucking beast! His bass lines on every single overkill album are remarkable! It gives me goosebumps.
Not an Overkill fan but they were instrumentally perfect. Loud bass, loud guitar, ultra tight drums.
its the tickle me elmo on the mic thats the issue
What a redundant comment

OVERKILL!!! Should be part of The Big 4 (5)
I called that tone Trash Can Bass! Smack the side of a steel drum (trash can), kinda the same sound.

Thank you so much Danny! I really appreciate it man! Keep up the great work and yes I will enjoy my retirement haha! Love you bro! 👊🤘
Yooooo it’s the guy that requested it
What up guy!
There is hope for the rest of us! All tones will be done at some point.

Love his bass sound
Me too. I LIKE gutty sounding bass.
Sounds so fuckin' good! Drummers dream tone, still has that low end but enough mids and highs that would cut through the guitars and still be heard.
DD is one of my favorites, made me want to play with a pick more than any player out there. Ironbound is a perfect blend of low end and his signature clank.
Even more than Lemmy?! 😮
What about Lemmy? DO NOT DISS LEMMY!!
DD is one of the most underrated bass players in my opinion. Being a fan since early 90's, I am looking foreward for the gig at the end of the month.
For 28 years, that's been pretty much my bass tone. Love it.
I just love your pod cast and sharing your thoughts and Experiences playing Bass, my most favorite instrument I still play till this day

DD's tone is METAL!
The bass tone a lot of players use now is epic. I love down and dirty sound and the way it’s tracked now is outstanding.
D.D. Verni is great for that aggressive, in-your-face bass tone, but I think Dan Lilker and even David Ellefson also had that clangy metal bass tone going strong in their own rights
yea i wasn't sure who he was an was thinking Nuclear right away
Dan has more gain on his tone, I wonder what setting he has dialed in on his Sansamp GT2
DD is frickin awesome. So glad to see him get acknowledged here. Adn you tone was perfect.
John Entwistle has entered the chat. In the 1960s.
I came to write this, a very Entwistle tone.
Nailed the tone. DD Verni was the first bassist i could "hear" and along with his stage presence became a huge inspiration and influence of mine
Alex Perialas might have something to say about that as well. He worked with Overkill,Anthrax and Testament around the same time and their bassists all had a bit of Klank going on.

Bruce Foxton's bass tone would be nice!
DD is the man. Hailz from Jersey! 🤘🏻
I always called that behs tone TREBLE!😂
DD is probably my favorite metal bassist. I love that tone!
I would give credit to Dug Pinnick for the clank bass tone. He’s called the King of Clank for a reason.
The Who bassist should be credited as the creator Clank bass tone, he was the first one to mix bass amp + guitar amp.
@@sebastian6121 I agree that John Entwistle is probably the first with that tone, though, personally, I'm much more of a Frank Bello fan than Entwistle. I do dig some Pinnick, though. Absolutely love the Dogman album.
I love DD's tone and you nailed it
Did he really invent this tone? Sounds a lot like Frank Bello too. Which came first? My guess is that they got the idea from the NYHC scene first
Sounds a bit like JJ Burnel
One of Overkill's original guitarists was Danny Spitz. Also, I'm pretty sure the Lubricunts predate anthrax.
