  • Two years ago I purchased a Wacom Cintiq 27inch and I promised to give you a 'users review' of what it was like. Sorry it's taken me so long but in this video I finally explained why I've gone back to using an Eizo with a Wacom tablet instead.

Really interesting video for me seeing another kind of perspective on stuff like this. I'm an illustrator so my needs are different and I don't sell prints or have a need for utmost color accuracy but hearing first hand why things like that can be very important is pretty cool.

Of course the Cintiq were primarily made for artists like painter , drawer , designers , illustrator, comic artist. Etc.. and not so much for photography artist that don’t really rely on painting on screen.
Usually tho, professional artists uses 2 monitors when using a Cintiq. The texture and anti glare screen technology they use also is a major part and Selling point for the Cintiq. For drawing feel and obviously to avoid glare.
For ur photography line of work the Cintiq isn’t ideal.
But i like the Cintiq because i like on screen drawing and painting ...and the size is a plus...i love the feel of the texture and the anti glare ..i use similar screen protector on my ipad pro.

Hey Karl, I understand 100% the glass problem with the Cintiq Wacom. I have the 24HD model ( the old one ) and the glare from the screen ( together with the glass) is very harmful for a perfect color work . But compares a 2k monitor (cintiq) with a 4k ( ULTRA MONSTER HQ quality Eizo) is not so fair! ahah. Would be awesome to see you with the new Cintiq 4k model ( 24 or 32" ) and share some though about that. But in my opinion Eizo will be the Top 1 always! Lets see if Asus can beat him!, can't wait to see the review.

I think you nailed it about the surface material of the Cintiq. The Eizo looks significantly better. And the comment on the hand blocking really makes sense to me. Thanks, I will save my money.

Great comparison, thanks for the video. I definitely see the difference in sharpness and overall quality of the image between the 2 monitors. Eizo is definitely far superior. I have been using Eizos for over 10 years. To me, the biggest advantage of Eizo is not about Eizo at all. The fact that I can put Wacom on a table surface is more convenient to draw and paint at long stretches of time. I program my Wacom so that I only use a portion of the tablet surface to cover the entire monitor screen. So I don't have to make huge hand/arm movements to make small fine changes to my image. Makes painting and drawing much easier. I understand painters paint on large canvas and that is how it is done. But Personally, I like my hand to move minimally so there are fewer shakes and bumps to be more accurate. Also when it comes to image editing as supposed to painting, I feel like it needs more pinpoint accuracy at the pixel level. Whereas in painting it doesn't have to be that precise in my opinion. What are your thoughts?

Wow. I experienced the same thing with my two monitors. One is really sharp and the other isn't as sharp. They are both calibrated and so on. But sometimes the quality of the panel is what makes the difference. I actually want to get that Asus PA monitor. I hope you do receive it and do a review. You saved me some time and money with regards to the Cintique. Thanks Karl.

The best setup is instead of a screen less cintiq, a cintiq pro 16 (or if you have enough room a 24) (both do 4k), and a bigger 32-0r 27 inch 4 k color grading monitor, and set them up as duplicates, You can see directly what you do on the cintiq, and when you look up you have the color accuracy you need. The cintiq has as a bonus touch!

How important is to use a qadro gpu to work on Photoshop? I've been looking into getting a laptop but as far as I've learned you can only work on 10bit on PS using Quadro. How important would you say that is in your workflow?

I think that big bezel on Wacom is for palm rest space, since the screen itself is touchscreen and you could held the tablet without accidentally touched the screen.
That kind of bezel is quite common on digital pen monitors (even i haven't seen any bezeless pen monitor until i wrote this).
It also supposed to be a space to put the additional Express Keys remote accessory which is magnetic.

Hello Karl, and thank you for sharing your experience with the two monitors side by side. You mentioned the Asus as the next one you might compare. If you happened to have the opportunity, I would also wish to suggest the ViewSonic VP-2785-4K for a review, which, similarly to the Eizo, has 99% Adobe RGB coverage, but comes with a price tag even cheaper than the Wacom - it costs around $ 900. While I don't expect the ViewSonic to really be on par with your Eizo, I've been seriously considering it for the past months thanks to its reportedly high performance-to-price ratio and the fact that it is a budget alternative compared to comparable Eizo ColorEdge monitors. It would be very interesting to see or hear your experience with it if you happen to already have some, or gain some in the near future. (I know you are not a very gear-oriented person, my curiosity makes me suggest including this piece of hardware nevertheless...)

Good and valid comparison - especially about how your hand covers part of the image you need to compare to during retouching on the Cintiq. I use two large Intuos Pro tablets mapped to (3) NEC 27" SpectraView calibrated monitors side by side on my MacPro. The center monitor is my main monitor and one of the Intuos pros is mapped strictly to that monitor for retouching. The monitors on either side are usually covered with the many palettes I use especially with illustration and CAD programs, but are also great for comparing muliple images when needed.

Honestly, between a 27QHD Cintiq to an Eizo 31" 4K screen, I don't think there should have been a comparison, especially when the cintiq your reviewing is not even 4K (unlike the new cintiq pros) and comes with a matte screen protector already installed, which would have blurred up the screen a lot more than anyone would like. The cintiq is meant for practically everything digitally creative while the Eizo is meant for more refined tuning for coloring and display.

Have you tried a Surface Studio? The screen is beautiful at 4500x3000 pixels. The downside on the 1st gen was that it’s a bit underpowered. 2 is meant to be better although in a perfect world they would release just the monitor to use with your own pc

Great comparison - really is like night and day. Absolutely no comparison for photographers - Eizo all day long, if you have the money. The Cintiq really is for drawing - it looks so washed out - not even close to the colours on the normal monitor
Plus point is, I can stop looking at getting a Cintiq for photo work :-)

    • @tested211
      @tested211 11 місяців тому

Using a Cintiq for photo editing seems really odd to me. However good the screen is, it's never going to give you the same quality as an Eizo etc. due to the matte coating scattering the light, brightening the darks. The matte coating is needed for pen feel and anti-reflection. Most of the price goes into the digitizer and the display is always going to be compromised for the cost.
I can see why interacting directly with a screen LOOKS like it should be better and how we should do things a couple of decades into the 21st Century but IMO a Cintiq is worse than a drawing tablet in every respect apart from 2 factors: image involvement and line accuracy. If you need either of those greatly, then maybe a Cintiq. Otherwise a tablet with a good quality monitor has many, many advantages.

Hi Richard, that hasn't happened to me, probably as I'm often resting my body wait on my arm on the screen and I could also lay the Wacom flatter if necessary. Although it is more tiring in general compared to the small tablet as you are having to move your arm greater distances.

To solve your problem you can buy the new wacom 4k and duplicate the display and you will have the same picture on both displays so you can use both the eizo and the wacom at the same time :) and you cant compare the picture of your eizo to the wacom because the eizo is 4k and the wacom is not. 4k is great, there is no sense to use a non 4k monitor anymore :) And yes drawing directly on screen works better for illustrators than retouchers :) Btw fantastic photo on your screen, it's one of your best :) I just noticed at first you had a cropped image on your screen, the cropped version is even better than the full image I think

Good job Karl, very useful when choosing rather expensive tool. However it seems a little bit unfair to compare two units with different resolutions. Eizo 4K vs current Cintiq Pro DTK(H)-3220 UHD would be the same category. I had the Cintiq 27QHD for a couple of years. I recently upgraded to the Cintiq 32" 4K version. I have to say it is a huge improvement over the original 27QHD. It may not be to the level of the Eizo, but definitely worth another look. The accuracy, richness and view angle are also markedly improved. Having used pen tablets for years for retouching, I absolutely love using the Cintiq and retouching right on the screen.
