    Dear Fran and Rich,
    Before you start ripping windows out and resealing them try a product called 'Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure' . The only time we had window leaks was after they were taken out and put back in when the boat was painted. Managed to cure all the leaks with this product which is a liquid silicone sealant. It will find it's way into the tiniest cracks/holes and seal them. It's available for most chandlers. Mark where the leaks are coming in when it's wet and apply this in the dry. It's not expensive and saved us re-refitting our windows.
    Love the vlogs - avid watchers.

    I think leaky windows are very common, we had them when we bought the boat. We were advised to buy Indasa Polyurethane Sealant to use to in an emergency. We haven’t used it yet because the boat engineer at the marina we store the boat at looked at the windows for us. It turned out to be dirt in the window channels and blocked drain holes in the frame. He said this was why most windows leak! Since he cleaned the frames and unblocked the drain holes the windows have been fine. Hopefully your windows will be just as easy to fix because it’s terrible when the boat is leaky. Interesting to see the costs for your journey and we also find our consumption of wine increases when we’re aboard. We also love being on the boat together. I prefer it to being at home. Dogs, wine, internet, freedom and a husband what more could you want? Thanks as always for sharing you adventure.

    • @FloatingOurBoat
      @FloatingOurBoat  6 років тому

      Thanks Sylvia. We will try cleaning out the window drains and applying sealant first. It seams from looking at Facebook posts that leaky windows are so common. Well let you know how we get on.

    • @TheTillerPeopleNarrowboaters
      @TheTillerPeopleNarrowboaters 6 років тому

      The reason why so many windows and portholes leak is because the wrong sealant is used. Sikaflex or similar eventually dries out and cracks which leads to water ingress. Indasa sealant is used on windscreens and does not crack or set rock hard.
      www.indasa-abrasives.com/global/en/catalogue/pu-sealer/
      We have never had leaks on any of our boats since we have used this.
      Glad you took our advice Sylvia. 😊

    Of money could be saved if he were attached to a harness like the horses used to years ago once the boat has got up to speed cut the power and let man take over should be easier to tow then,

      Albert Rowe The legally dubious livaboards in bath were causing problems when we were there. There was an attempted boat siezure but the CRT, all of a sudden about five others came to his rescue, blocking the canal and causing mayhem. We would all love to live in the middle of bath for nothing, but the world doesn't work like that, if people can't afford the fees they have no right to live permanently on facilities designed for and paid for by visitors who actually adhere to the terms of their licence. To abuse others makes it even worse.

    I have rain water coming in from the mushroom vents, on closer inspection it looked as though as with heavy rain, the drops where bouncing back inside the vent and then dropping on to the dinette, so may I suggest incase you want to take them apart, just check if they are dripping from mushroom dome or from seal hope that helps

      Hi Nicole
      The loom is called a Saori Loom. It is a unique loom designed and made in Japan and has a lovely story behind it. I had a trial lesson when we lived in Norfolk and was instantly hooked. There are about 6 Saori centres in the uk and others around the world. You can find it all on line if you search for Saori weaving. Here is a link to the lady who started me off. I hope this helps

    @14:42 From time to time I have noticed that you leave your ropes laying on top of your solar panels. I have seen several videos on UA-cam about installing solar panels on RVs and boats and whether to install more than one panel in series or in parallel. One of the videos (Gone with the Wynns) tested what the effects of obstructing even a portion of one panel had on the production of power from the solar panels. They found that even the shadow of one of their halyards that fell across one of the panel severely reduced the power produced by several panels when wired in series. Just giving you a heads up of one more thing to look at. One of the other videos found that there was less-than-expected negative effects of having dirty solar panels which I guess was good to hear.

    Ahh leaks, I've been playing catch up myself at home...first my steam machine started leaking in the steam room, then the shower from the back of the body jets, my sons room in the back bedroom started leaking through the ceiling, had to cut a patch out and hit with flashing and a heatgun. Washing machine rinse hose cracked, repaired it and cause another leak to the sink, and on top of that my freezer just started leaking water out of the bottom. I'm just glad I'm not the only one experiencing leaks :) but why do they all come at once !!!

      @FloatingOurBoat  6 років тому

      Hi Kevin. We're glad you have been inspired by our life. The biggest bit of advice I can give us don't wait too long for the perfect boat. I think you always change your mind about what you need once you are aboard so have a look at a few then just go ahead. Some people spend years looking when they could be cruising. For us it was more about the lifestyle and the travelling than having the perfect boat. Hope that helps

    • @FloatingOurBoat

      So far we have only paid twice for mooring and that was on the Thames at about £6/ night. We don't intend to moor up anywhere to stay, so mooring should be a minimal cost.

    I look forward to the future when they rip out the engine put an Electric engine & a battery bank. Just think of the space for batteries if the fine was removed. Couple more solar panels decent inverter electric hob decent size fridge no more fuel cost or replacement parts for the engine... Fran just think you could get a washer & dryer with that electric conversion..... My question would be on the road if you have a hybrid or full electric car you pay no road tax with it being zero emissions. Now if you did a full electric conversion I can't see why river or canal authority's can charge you for a toll if you're environmentally friendly considering that's what everybody is trying to promote I don't think anybody with sense in the justice system would stand to fine you for not paying a toll considering they don't for hybrids or full electric vehicles on the road..... Mind you I'm thinking ahead 😂😂🙈
    P.s is that engine air cooled or raw water cooled because I don't hear the exhaust fishing water sound. Load that's sound on broads hire boats.

    • @spencerwilton5831
      @spencerwilton5831 6 років тому

      Jonny Jones unfortunately electric boats / battery technology is not there yet! Everyone suggests solar charging, but there is simply not enough roof space on a narrow boat. A narrowboat takes 3 to 5kw of power to maintain a walking pace cruise speed. For the sake of argument, let's say 4kw. This is the typical output of a domestic house solar install comprising at least 12 panels. Even then, it only produces the maximum 4kw for a few hours each year, when the sun is perfectly positioned and the sky clear. A narrowboat has room for perhaps 6 panels max, so 2kw max output. Most of the time it's cruising, so at varying angles to the sun, or passing under trees. You could never generate enough power. Sure, you could plug in to charge, but given marinas are miles apart in some sections, and would be overwhelmed, there is nowhere to do so. Best option might be a hybrid system with a small diesel generator designed to operate at maximum efficiency.
      Most narrowboat are keel cooled. A tank against the hull transfers engine heat to the canal water, without the problems of sucking in raw water along with weeds, debris etc.

    What do you expect he had an eu flag on the back of his boat , obviously wants to go in the opposite direction to all those trying to get in here . I would have helped him emigrate if he had spoken to me like that . ha ha
