90 Second Boxing Tips - Peek-a-Boo

- Опубліковано 14 гру 2016
- www.myboxingcoach.com - In this 90 second boxing tips video I am going to give a quick and simple view of the ‘peek-a-boo’ boxing style.
This style of boxing was made famous by Iron Mike Tyson, the principles embedded in Mike by the great trainer Cus D’Amato who also guided such boxing luminaries as Floyd Patterson and Emile Griffith.
D’Amato encouraged his fighters to use this ultimately defensive style, and whilst it was really about managing the risk of taking incoming shots it was also geared toward turning defense into attack. It is about evasiveness and speed of assault.
The peek-a-boo style is especially effective for shorter fighters to use against taller guys, nullifying reach by using deft slips, ducks and rolls.
Boxing Tips #1
Keep the hands high at all times, especially at long range. It’s almost like the double arm block. This was a non-negotiable for D’Amato - the hands remain in the guard position…always!
Boxing Tips #2
Use slips and ducks proactively to make you evasive. Fire the jab off the slips to crack open the defense of the opponent and lay the ground for the follow up combination.
Tyson used to slip a lot from the waist with some drive from the legs. I coach slips to be driven from the legs, I just feel that you get a more responsive outcome in terms of balance and punch effectiveness.
Boxing Tips #3
Be careful about going ‘square on’ at long range, if you take an incoming shot your balance can go.
Nice and simple, the peek a boo style.
Any comments or questions below please.
Cheers

Shadow boxing alone can get you far!

This style requires constant slipping and head movement. Fighters need tremendous endurance stamina and power to be really really effective with this style
Will Yu - Thats why practicing it regularly with build that stamina
Not mentioning the vulnerability of slipping into a hook or a uppercut
@@Aki-xj6ll If you do peek a boo correctly you would never have to worry about that too much because that hook/uppercut would be an opening for a flurry of body shots. Watch Tyson videos and see how it worked out for people who tried to upper cut Tyson while he was slipping.
that's probably why no one uses it anymore. You need once in a generation talents
@will yu watch this and tell what you say ..another gut from india fights in peekaboo style ..and he is so good in it ua-cam.com/video/TKPLjaEcJd4/v-deo.html
The peek-a-boo style is even better for street boxing (fighting). It is very hard to defend and most have never had it used against them.
helicopter punchers never know just how precious their liver til they feel it😆
@@lucabaki True, but defenses against kickers is pretty easy to learn.
It’s over when someone does a double leg on you
@@mandoso7222 Any person who wrestled in Junior High can stop a double leg takedown.
to be honest, yes and no. You are more prone to be hit, but because it’s bare knuckles the power isn’t as hard as a glove meaning you can easily get through them.
I don't see many UA-cam or even world class trainers who have as much insight and explain things as eloquently as you do.
Well in Fran
Thank you very much James, that's really kind.
very nice, I would love to see a 10 min video on this subject :)
Me too!
Here Here!
what they said.
+5
me too
Peek a boo deserves 10 mins:)
Peek a boo requires longer than that to master
Indeed it does.
Will sort something out Spike
Yes! the world needs this 10 min video
I would love to see that 10 minute video also, you always have very good details
Will sort something out. Thanks
I love this, Reminds me of tying ropes across our MMA/Self defense studio, below shoulder height, and doing the "Tyson March", forward and backward with two or three punches every time we bobbed and slipped and weaved, under the rope, come up and punch, 1-2, weave under to the other side, 1-2-3, etc., for about twenty minutes. It was a great drill, and you learned to use your knees and legs/hips in the peek-a-boo style, plus diagonal steps with counters, etc. Also very tiring : )
Let's give this guy more credit He's a fantastic coach
slipping at the legs saves you plenty of trouble from back pains. Awesome tip to follow
Whos here after frans response to the haters I love fran sands great tips as always
Loving your 90 second tips! Helps a lot!! Thanks as always!
You're welcome, thank you
thank you for the tips! can’t wait to try them more.
Thanks Fran. Great explanation of this style.
I do MMA and we train peek-a-boo because of the square hips translate well for a level change and take down. I would love to see more of your tips on peek a boo thanks fran.
Thanks Andy, nice insight on the logic of applying stuff like this in MMA
as always, thank you!
More on this style please and phenomenal work, coach!
Thanks and will do
I tried this out for shadowboxing and I was already gassed after 2 rounds
Crazy how Mike Tyson can maintain that much power and volume for a full 12 rounds
Please do 10+ video on peek a boo style, thanks! And keep up the great videos!
Will do, thanks
soon please lol! I've been trying practice but I don't know the correct way to slip peek a boo style. I watch all your videos big fan ex, the slipping demon video really helped me.
johnny le I know I hope he drops the 10 mins peek a boo video soon!
Peekaboo breakdown by a former Cus D’amato (peekaboo inventor) fighter. Its a style that is perfectly suited to shorter fighters with less reach than their opponent due to the emphasis on slipping, bobbing and weaving. Its a unique style that not many traditional boxing gyms understand how to properly teach ua-cam.com/video/JBgT0oqOxqM/v-deo.html
Can be very difficult to fight against this style, and it's exciting to watch, thanks for sharing this with us.
You're welcome.
thank you it was actually helpful
this is such a good freaking video for only being 1 minute 51 seconds. wow. very good at making concepts easy to understand ive seen peoples 20 min videos be less informative
God Bless You my friend
like always, great content!
Thank you
I love your videos Bro....much respect out of Detroit....just subscribed.
Can we please have a longer version of this style
Great video, excellent explanation.
Coach. We need a longer video on this please
Thanks Coach, always a pleasure.
Thanks Marcus
Thank you sir
Square on works because of the head movement and the shifting foot work. Make the opponent miss continuously and then shift to either side while your opponent is still facing forward. This gives the fighter confidence that they are safe to unleash their full power while punching. Squaring up more also takes less distance for the right hand and a more stable base to explode from. Sometimes side on fighters don’t let the right hand go as well as they could because they are tentative because of countering. The head movement, guard, shifting footwork and powerful stance takes the fighters tentativeness away and allows him to hit with more explosiveness. It gives him confidence in his safety and explosiveness in his punching. I read about it in ‘Iron Ambition’ the lessons Mike Tyson learned from Cus D’Amato.
Hey thanks for the tips I needed this, my coach doesn't want me doing the cross arm guard and wants me to do more of this
i love this style. I have the same reach as Tyson albeit a little taller and this is the style that is very natural to me. I just haven't seen many boxers use it nowadays but then again im a casual watcher :)
Please do a ten minute video on peekaboo!!
Will do
Short and simple, great explanation, don't cross your leg, you will be open for attack, but if you cross your legs you will generate more power.
he's spot on about the explosive footwork, Patterson and particularly Tyson are very underrated technical fighters, I think an important part about the peekaboo style is that it's very physically demanding and without the power and explosive speed in your hands feet and head movement leaves you quite vulnerable a question I have is do you know any other fighters who have successfully pulled off the peekaboo style? thanks for the video Fran currently a amateur boxing coach in the north west and I'm always taking points from the vids
Thanks George, nice words from a fellow coach. Jose Torres was another Cus D'Amato fighter (not Emile Griffith as I mention in the video), but his style is not 'obviously' peek-a-boo if you know what I mean.
as someone with little knowledge of boxing but a good amount of knowledge in strength training & biomechanics. In all of Tyson's training & fighting videos it looks like Tyson had very strong legs & hips. Much more so than any other boxer I've seen. And his precise sharp movements, while twisting the body, shifting weight from feet to feet and travelling forwards - generated a sort of cumulative momentum to be exploited. Both as a means of recycling energy and to put it into a shot at the end.
Peek a boo is not quit simple like you said, it takes time and dedication of training!
Thank you
Well explained
Slipping with the legs is very interesting to me great video
Very nice definition
Well thank you for sharing, didn´t know about being square but makes sense. Thing is that I feel it can be combined with you César Chávez special when you gave three wonderful drills I have been doing in my backyard. You need legs though.
Thanks
You’re a great coach!👍
Thank you
thanks
Yeah, not a lot of videos out there on how to properly use peek-a-boo. A longer video on the basics would be amazing.
Will do Tom
Can you do a longer video on this subject please?
i love this break down. im short so this helps. thank you!
Excellent, thank you for the feedback
Thank you mate
You're welcome buddy.
I'll be back, now your going to train me, i Love this Style!!!
Please make longer video about this peek a boo :)
Will do
I just subscribed to your channel, great content. What style do you teach vs the peek-a-boo style? You mentioned this is a more defensive style what style would be more aggressive or offensive?
I don't teach a style as such, I teach a range of skills, techniques and approaches and encourage the boxer (you) to think about how and when to apply them. I like to make fighters self-sufficient if you know what I mean.
Aheheheh~ Beautiful~! ahehehh~ Ilove it~
a longer and more in-depth video would be really nice; and many thanks for the next great film! :)
No worries
Thank you so much. Iam 2 meters tall, is the peek-a-boo style can work for me.
Fran! I need this! make a 10 minute video on this please!
I will get around to it
great! I would love to watch the ten minute video as well!
Cool, will sort something
Fascinating style . I think its a modification of "Turtle shell" defense (something ala Joshua Clotley) with attacks being from the left and right side (hooks, body shots and uppercuts). The numbering system is easy: odd numbers for left hand, even numbers for the right hand..and the order is : 1-2 hooks to jaw, 3-4 uppercuts, 5-6 body shots, 7-8 jabs, 9-10 overhands (homerun hooks)
Cool, thanks for the insight
Coach I'm waiting for the 10 min video in peek a boo
Mike tyson stance was square, and he had a unique way of slipping punches, very dynamic side bends at the waist.
Yep
Peek a boo is the best style for the streets!!!
good
Another benefit of the peek a boo, which is absolutely devastating for fighters who are ambidextrous, is the symmetrical nature of the guard. Unlike righties and lefties, who will set up in their off stance to give their power hand the lead. A fighter who is truly ambidextrous, like tyson, are completely comfortable shifting in and out of orthodox to southpaw and those who have excellent footwork (again like tyson) can shuffle between the stances per punch. If you watch fight footage of his fights, especially his early fights before he fired Kevin Rooney, you will see him shuffle in and out of orthodox and southpaw in mid combo. He may start orthodox but end the combo in southpaw. This type of talent is born and cannot be taught. The point though is unlike other styles and guards. Were the lead and power hands are clearly defined. Both hands are relatively mirrored in the same spot. So as you shuffle out of orthodox it enables you about a split second delay before your opponent realizes you have switched stands. This have second illusion is truly, in my opinion, what made tyson so devastating because he was so fast that that split second put him into a firing position that couldn't be stopped by his unaware opponents. This positioning made his knockouts so spectacular and sent people flying across the ring because of the angles he could switch too.
Im a beginer with short body 165 cm i favor this style but because its easier to avoid hook and strike with this style but the disadvantadge is this stance make me tired easily and very vurneralble to uppercut
Hey Fran. Do you think 16 oz gloves are too heavy for bag and mitt work for someone ~75 kg?
No they are just fine.
Please do a ten min vid bossman
Will put something together
Please a 10 min session on peekaboo
💪
I use to boxe and I was tall to my weight division and my coach trained me on peek a boo style that's make me heated a lot peek a boo is for short fighters
Wouldn’t swinging at the knees sacrifice balance? I’ve always swung at the waste. Been trying from the knees the last couple sessions. I like that I get more torso control, but I feel like that if I got punched in that moment I’d lose footing.
Whoa a new Fran Sands video :)
More coming :-)
Please help. Are you supposed to land with the first two knuckles, or bottom three in Peekaboo boxing?
Any - just make it land
wish I knew you 40 years ago.
Haha. Cheers John
John Kostick never to late brother
Niiiiice, tried this on my baby.

Wonder why he won’t wake up🤔🤔
Depression Hits bruh he might be dead 😕
Depression Hits why?

Good job.
Peek a boo offense. Peek a boo defense. Peek a boo leg movement. You can do several videos not just 10 minutes.
indeed you can, thanks Rich
Any TikTok channel coming up? These 90 seconds videos would be perfect there
Cus' Peek-A-Boo style requires both feet to face foward, u can see this in Iron Mike's fighting stance
Still waitin for the 10min peek-a-boo
Do a 10 minute video on the Peek-a-boo style! Help us up and comers, I bet it'd be a great video
Will do Nick
@@myboxingcoach That really going to be super helpful not only for me but also other also who love this style.
The reason I love this style and want to learn, due to its dynamic & generate explosives power with the waist twist.
@@myboxingcoach keep up the great work brother
Dude u look good great video
Thank you
"Leverage"
Bel video
You have to be really fast and strong to be effective, is very effective is the boxer had short stature. You keep your guard in the face and body using all the arm, the opponent try to punch you in the face, and you hit the body, the opponent covers the body, and you hit him with a cross in the face.
That peekaboo boxing style will knock your ass out
I find it better to stand square when doing this style is that a problem?
Might limit your mobility Joshua and maybe leave you exposed to going off balance when straight shots come your way. Better going square at close range.
I was told my foot placement was supposed to be 12 o clock and 2 o clock
Please subtitule the español please!!!!
Is skipping a must in boxing or is running a lot better plz help I’m confused. I am talking for boxing do u have to skip??
haha yes you need to do both, 10 - 20 mins of skipping and around 5 kms of running a day
I See U
I would say this style is alot more useful for shorter guys :D
I use this if I fight tall people
Did anyone notable besides Tyson use this style with any success? Just curious
Finally someone that knows what they are talking about, too many clowns out there thinking they know what they are talking about. Great video
Thanks very much Jeremiah
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey man, love your videos and think your an amazing coach but this isn't peek a boo.
Firstly the traditional stance boxers use is blading their body which is what you're doing, however in peek a boo - everyone is taught to be square. Look at floyd patterson and mike tyson, they're most of the time squared up with their body.
Here's a video of Kevin Rooney(Trainer at Catskills gym) doing some drills with a student but I want you to notice his stance and how squared up he is. ua-cam.com/video/cqTZu58XCL0/v-deo.html
Also I noticed you slip to the right first, which is normal in boxing because that's to avoid the incoming 2, however in peek a boo - tyson always slipped left and he doesn't do a slight shoulder slip but goes fully vertically left. This is to avoid the jab - and the striaght in one slip.
That's why many people have said this style really takes a toll on your back since the slips in peek a boo make them twist to the side all the way.
This video shows Mike tyson slipping all the way to the left, much farther than what normal boxers do since the peek a boo is based on counter striking, not just defense as you've said. ua-cam.com/video/jXuqhCH09rA/v-deo.html
This is only the basics of Peek a boo but the style is very different, even when comparing basic proper stances of practical boxing.
Love your videos but I just wanted people to know, this isn't peek a boo.
No worries. I'm no peek-a-boo aficionado, I tend to like to have boxers I work with not categorize themselves to be honest. Great comment, really helpful
Can tall people still use this style but just change it up a little? Cause I never see it no more but I feel if you have good head movement anyone can use it.
Floyd Patterson used the peekaboo style and he was 6'0 so yes it can be used by tall people
What are some tips on taller fighters fighting shorter fighters?
Try this: ua-cam.com/video/3Crm2HRy-2s/v-deo.html
Fran Sands Thanks alot.
Your foot placement is incorrect he is way more square
